For a nobel prize winner this play seems rather slow. But I read it in its original language so maybe there were some language problems.
The characters annoyed me: Darnley was whiny, Maria Stuart kinda helpless and bitchy. Compared to Schiller's Maria Stuart, this play really is a little bit weaker.
