Josephine Trott Melodious Double Stops - Book 1 | Viola Technique Sheet Music Book for Students | Essential Double Stop Practice Method for Tone Balance Intonation Strengthening and Daily Viola Study

Rate this book
This edition of Josephine Trotts Melodious Double-Stops is designed for viola students, advancing learners, and teachers seeking a clear and effective method for developing double-stop technique. Originally written for violin, these exercises have been thoughtfully adapted for viola, making them ideal for lessons, home practice, and strengthening overall musical control. The book supports structured study and provides accessible material for players building confidence in tone and intonation.

Transcribed by Jane Daniel, the collection maintains the musical flow and developmental pacing of the original violin edition while ensuring comfortable fingerings and resonant voicing for viola. Each exercise is arranged to help players refine balance between the strings, coordinate left-hand shape, and develop steady bow distribution. The concise layout allows students to focus directly on the technical patterns, while teachers can easily incorporate the material into warm-ups, daily routines, and guided instruction.

This resource is valuable for improving reading accuracy, rhythmic stability, and overall control across the instrument. Through progressive intervals and melodic patterns, players can strengthen finger independence, improve intonation awareness, and achieve a fuller, more expressive sound. Its approachable structure makes it suitable for individual practice or studio use, offering consistent support for long-term technical development.

Bring music to life. This adaptation of Trotts classic method provides an inspiring way for violists to build foundational skills with clarity and confidence. Ideal for lesson plans, home study, recital preparation, or thoughtful gift-giving, it encourages steady growth and expressive musicianship.

This starts out easy (the first eight etudes have an open string in every double stop) and quickly progresses to more difficult double stops. It's a great way to get students (or yourself!) more comfortable with double stops.

Minus one star because there are some musically unsatisfying moments where the etude just doesn't sound quite right even when you're playing the right notes.

I'm using this around Suzuki Book 5, post-Wohlfahrt études.
