Captured, collared, and trapped in her human form, Brooke escapes, but at what cost?

When she and her sister are kidnapped and collared, Brooke is the only one who escapes. Dropped into the Canadian wilderness with a dangerous shifter on her tail, there is no way for her to save her sister. The only one who can help her is a reclusive man she comes across in the middle of nowhere, a loner who doesn’t speak.

Grizzly shifter Kane hasn’t socialized with another human in years, and he likes it that way. Being on his own has kept people safe from him, but now that an intriguing woman has intruded on his self-exile, he struggles to control his more primal emotions. And when Brooke goes into heat, stranded in his remote cabin is the last place she should be.

With danger sniffing at their heels, will Brooke and Kane’s forced proximity be their salvation, or prove fatal to them both?

J.E. McDonald was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, The Land of the Living Skies. As a child, she was either searching the clouds for identifiable shapes, or star-gazing way past her bedtime. She’s an anti-morning person who wakes up at 5am to write. Needless to say, coffee is a morning requirement. She cut her teeth watching Star Trek, James Bond movies, and reading the Harlequin novels her mother left in the bathroom—which resulted in an extremely skewed sense of sex education by age eleven. All of these factors contribute to her love of writing paranormal romance with humor, mystery, and lots of spice. J.E. resides in Saskatchewan with her husband and three daughters.

I'm a fan of her Wickwood series so when I saw the twelve-pack abs on the cover, I thought who doesn't love a handsome shifter.
Holy shifter hotness, this book is light-it-on-fire level of steam!
I read it so fast, just flipping the page to see what these two did next. It has action, adventure, mystery, high stakes, and a lot of steamy times. Kane hooked me into the story, but I've gotta admit that by the end, Brooke really holds her own.
Also, the locations were just superbly done. I felt like I was there in the small town they visited, in the city where they went to find his brother, even at the lake.
Well done! Highly recommend.

A sexy captivating tale for sure, J.E. McDonald has once again woven a unique twist into a story that feels like a modern spin on the Goldielocks fairytale. A fantastic hero, Kane is mysterious, kind, but so very alpha, with the addition of a disability that the author handles very well. The heroine's arc is fantastic, learning and growing and teetering on the line of vulnerability but finding her inner strength. I loved how the two had to learn to truly trust each other under the circumstances. I'm a sucker for forced proximity stories, and this one does not disappoint. Lots of spice, but great character building drives home this great story that will keep you hooked until the end, and then makes you long for book two.

Captive Wilderness was dark and sexy and exactly what I needed!

Brooke, a bobcat shifter, wakes, restrained, in a plane with no idea what happened to her. Her sister is with her and is clearly a badass as she handles the situation with their captives while booting Brooke out of the plane with a parachute. Brooke lands in the remote Canadian wilderness where she finds Kane, a grumpy, mute bear shifter who's keeping himself away from society.

Their fast-action, suspenseful, and highly steamy story unrolls from there.

This is the first in the series, dual-pov story. Kane and Brooke find their HEA, but the mystery isn't yet concluded, so I'm really looking forward to Sabrina's (Brooke's sister) story to learn more about why someone is hunting the bobcat shifters.

Pick this up if you like suspense and mystery romance, graphic steam, shifter instincts (the slightest dubcon because of shifter physiology, but handled super well), grumpy/sunshine, serious/sassy, and fantastic pacing and unraveling the story.

J.E. McDonald comes out swinging with Captive Wilderness, the first in a new paranormal romance series featuring shifters, plenty of spice, and forced proximity done right. I really loved that it opened like a thriller--with Brooke and her sister being kidnapped--and the subsequent escape into the Canadian Wilderness. Those high stakes as the background for a steamy, fated mates romance sold it. The cinnamon roll hero--a loner who keeps to himself to protect those around him from his animal side--was a compelling character, and I think Kane and Brooke complemented each other very well. It was great to see their growth as the high-stakes plot progressed.

If you like shifter romance, especially *very steamy* shifter romance, you'll want to check this out!

It's been a little while since I read a shifter romance and this book has made me want to read more - not to mention impatiently waiting for the next one in the series. The book had me from the first chapter and you experience the story as it unfolds. Both MCs are shifters and it's angsty and steamy. The level of angst varies through the book, and you get breaks you didn't know you needed.
All in all a book I recommend if you like paranormal shifter romance with heat.

J.E. McDonald delights again with Captive Wilderness. McDonald is a one-click author for me, as I have loved each book in the Wickwood Chronicles. This book is no different! Captive Wilderness will have readers flying through the pages, eager to find out what happens next! This is a thrill ride of a book, but not only that, it also has fantastic spice that is brilliantly done. I adored Brooke and Kane's story and was thrilled with their HEA, although I am counting down until book 2. If you are  fan of shifter romances or paranormal romances in general, do yourself a favor and read J.E.'s books. They do not disappoint and are always five star reads.

A very enjoyable read with suspense that starts on page one and steamy paranormal romance. The writing, the setting, the plot, and 3D attention to detail sucked me in and didn’t let me go.

-isolated, idyllic lakeside cabin in the wilderness
-Kane: loner bear shifter with a STEM background + very competent handyman
-Brooke: bobcat shifter, party girl, escapes kidnappers, flees through the wilderness, needs to rescue her sister, stumbles upon the male main character
-wound tending
-telepathy
-slaying beloved’s enemies
-intrigue
-an external plot that’s poised to carry across books
-lots and lots of spice, including mating bonds/bites and heats/ruts

Brooke is stranded in the wilderness for much of the book—I love a stranded in the wilderness plot—but so much is out of her hands. Because of that, there were times when her intent to rescue her sister felt a little like an afterthought; seeing the rescue planning process unfold on the page more might’ve lessened that feeling.

I really appreciated that Brooke asks Kane if he would teach her ASL and that she begins learning it.

*spoiler alert* I loved that Brooke is Kane’s center of gravity and her presence and their mating bond helps him get some of his control back when shifting. 🥺

Can’t wait for Sabrina’s book!

Content notes: kidnapping (shock collars, cages), blood, bloodlust, rage/explosive anger, death, biting, sex. Borderline dubious consent(?) - (related to the bloodlust & heat, not the kidnapping).

“Captive Wilderness” is Book 1 in the Goldenlach Ridge Shifters series and is a brilliant start to a new series. J.E. McDonald has created an exceptional story with good character development and a different take on shifters like being controlled by a collar and not being able to communicate.

This book was a solid mix of suspense and paranormal romance. Brooke is kidnapped from a club and escapes from the plane carrying her and her sister mid-air. She lands in the middle of nowhere Canada with nothing but her nightclub clothing and a drive to survive. Finding Kane's cabin is definitely a miracle towards her survival. Brooke is a shifter - but the people who kidnapper her put her in a collar that keeps her from shifting and rigged that collar to explode if she tries to remove it.

Kane is definitely a cinnamon roll guy - but wrapped up in a very growly exterior. Likely literally growly in this case. He's withdrawn from the world because he doesn't feel that he is safe to be around others. But in finding Brooke everything changes quickly. Kane is very scarred - both internally and externally. He lost the ability to speak around the same time he withdrew to his cabin in the middle of nowhere.

This book was definitely a great start to a series. It had the right balance of world-building and plot - so even though it was clearly the start of something, you didn't get so lost in the world. Both Kane and Brooke are great characters - and the way they change as people really worked well in the context of the short timeline of the book and their relationship.

Overall - I recommend especially for fans of Shifter romance!

I received this as an ARC through NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.

Captive Wilderness
Goldenlach Ridge Shifters, Book 1
by J. E. McDonald

I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a high steam contemporary suspense shifter romance. Themes of shifter heat/mating/biting claim/mental mate bond. Open door. The middle of the book is a lot of these activities so If that’s not your thing steer clear. The ending is what I would categorize as a partial cliffhanger. Our leading couple in this book comes to an HEA style understanding but the overall mystery/suspense plot will continue into the next book presumably starring our heroines sister and I’m going to guess one of the hero’s bffs. It’s alluded to that the bff “came back from the military different”. Personally a fan of the scarred hero trope in my romance so I am here for it. Trigger warnings - kidnap/abduction/being drugged, uncontrollable rage, unknown father, mom who moves from man to man.
Set primarily in Canada. I don’t see that terribly often, the scenery sounds gorgeous. Happy reading! 5/5

This is the first J.E. McDonald book I read and I enjoyed it so much! I couldn’t put down the book trying to figure out what would happen to Brooke and who is behind all of her attacks. Brook and Kane are such a great couple and I love we get to see both of their perspectives. I was so happy that I didn’t have to wait long to see them together! However, I would have liked to see their relationship grow and develop more. I think that dumping all of their past into one scene, were they have each other dreams, was too much and too fast. It would have been nice to see them share those moments at a time with each other and see their relationship grow stronger. In spite of that, I enjoyed the book a lot and quite frankly I cannot wait to see what happens next!

I received an advance copy of the book and this how I get to write an honest review.

This is the first book from J. E. McDonald I've read and I was entranced from the first page. The characters were strong, the plot was intense and entertaining, but my favorite parts were in the wilderness and the strong bond between the two main characters. I'm being kind of vague because I don't want to give anything away, but this is a definite must read!.

What a book! There's a mystery as to why Sabrina and Brooke is abducted. Brooke escaped and landed herself with an handsome burley shifter bear, Kane. Kane is traumatized from his past, but something about Brooke speaks to his bear. She sooths him and makes his uncontrollable bear tamer. She's his mate and he is hers. Love found away into their hearts and now they'll do anything to be keep each other safe.

The mystery , drama, danger and steam is off the charts in this book. I couldn't put the book down. . I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout in exchange for an honest review.

I loved this book. It’s the first in a new paranormal romance series that I really enjoyed reading. It’s Kane and Brooke’s story. Theres plenty of hot and steamy spicy romance with twist, turns, shifters, danger, drama and fated mates that kept my interest for the entire book. The characters and story are interesting and will keep you turning pages needing to see what happens next. It’s a great book and I loved reading it. .

It didn’t take very long for me to get pulled into this story. The action takes off running just about from the moment the book opens and really doesn’t ever let up. I found this to be such a unique approach to shifters and mates. I was fascinated by how Kane and Brooke navigated their situation and their essential differences. They have a compelling mystery on their hands and I’m desperate to learn more.

CAPTIVE WILDERNESS by J. E. McDonald is another 5-star success. I’ve loved all of her books and was happy to find that this one takes off in a new direction – shifters. I appreciated that the H and h found out just as much about themselves that they hadn’t known as they did about each other. Many previous shifter type books have the person in complete control but this doesn’t. There is a fatalistic view by one of the characters that, with the patience and support of the other, begins to be turned around. I have to say that I have two favorite quotes: “He had so many muscles it was like his muscles had muscles.”, and “Every new emotion made moisture pool in the corner of my eyes. His feelings were so beautiful, his intent clear. It was like some sort of song we were singing to each other, our own melody.” There was some time spent in exploring their newly developing relationship after Brooke initially escapes her captors due to her sister Sabrina’s help. Unfortunately, Sabrina wasn’t also able to escape and that becomes another quest in this adventure. There’s a lot going on yet to be explored and some other significant characters yet to be more fully developed. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. A big thank you to NetGalley and City Owl Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first in a series. That being said, there is literally no backstory or explanation. I almost think that this should be the 2nd book and Sabrina's book should be first. This is predominantly a shifter romance. It is an interesting story, and I liked Kane alot, and was saddened that he could not speak, Brooke seemed fairly superficial but she did grow on me. There are some holes in the plot but it is okay. For me, this is 3 stars. I am sure many paranormal romance readers will love it.

A one handed read! Unapologetically celebrates female sexuality without any of the usual baggage that is often piled on women in romance novels, especially in captive love stories. Includes a refreshingly vulnerable male love interest - all the rugged sexiness of a wilderness man without any of the toxic masculinity. She's also expertly woven in additional characters and a continuing story arc that has left me eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. (I'll just re-read this one a few times while I wait)

This is the story of what happens after Brooke wakes up on a plane in a cage with a collar around her neck. She manages to escape and meets a hot shifter in the middle of the woods. And this begins a fun hot story as these two survive the hunters after Brooke and try to figure out what is going on. It is a hot story with a bit of a mystery and a touch of danger. I enjoyed reading it and cannot wait to see what happens next as they only uncover a bit of the mystery that gives them a path to go forward to figure out what is really going on.

Shifter romance that caught my attention. Brooke and her sister are taken from a bar, collared so they can't shift, and loaded onto a cargo plane. With her sister's help, Brooke is able to escape and winds up in the middle of nowhere. Kane can't trust his bear around others. When a strange woman appears, he wants to help but tries to keep his distance. That doesn't work out when danger shows up.

Sabrina Brooke’s sister was trying to find campers that came up missing her family was threatened so she went to the bar where Brooke was. They both woke up on a plane caged and collared, Sabrina got the cages open and a parachute on Brooke before getting recaptured. Brooke was pushed out of the plane when on the ground went running and found Kane’s cabin, saw someone else jump out of the plane. Kane took care of the guys that came after Brooke at different times and were mated. The collar wasn’t the one Kane and his cousin had made for rabid shifters. Good book!

Fantastic!
Kane and Brooks met when she was escaping from a group of men who kidnapped her and her sister. She jumped off of a plane over the Canadian wilderness. She found his cabin as she ran from her pursuers. There is no road. She is stuck until the next plane drops off his supplies. Her fell head over heels in love with her and tried to deny it to himself. He is afraid that he will be a danger to her. He tries to work through his problems to get in tough with himself to make her safe while she is with him. This is a HEA ending, but there is more to the story.

Thank you for Netgalley and the Publisher for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

Captive Wilderness is a paranormal Romance with a dash of action, following the story of Brooke and Kane, both shifters but living in very different circumstances until their unlikely meeting.

Brooke and her sister are kidnapped. As shifters they should have an easy time escaping but the culprits use collars to literally tame them. Brooke escapes and ends up in the middle of the frozen wilderness. Stumbling upon a remote cabin, she gains not only a warm place to stay but a very hot shifter to keep her company and help her escape the people still hunting for her.

The book is very heavy on the romance and has a bit less action than what I would've preferred. I like when the romance ratio is more blanced out. I loved the characters, especially Kane, who I believe is a very unique character AND representation in this genre.
I also loved that there weren't too many extra dialogues and the story was focused mainly on the two main characters.

What I felt were weak spots was the lack of complexity. It just felt a bit boring and repetitive during the middle of the book. I didn't really have a fluid storyline but rather we had a looong stay at the cabin and then a lot of jumping around in the last 20% of the book. The spacing felt off as a result and I would've enjoyed it more if that 20% was spread throughout the book keeping the tempo going.
I also would have enjoyed if we got to know more the two main characters. Even the focus was on them, I didn't much have a chance to rrelate to them. For example what does Kane do in the cabin as a hobby? How does Brooke drink her coffee? A personal touch was missing and left the story a bit hollow.

The ending though was great, it got me hooked, I just want to know what's going on and what will unfold in book two.
I crave more of what we got in that 20% of the book.

3.5 stars from me.

Three and a half
I do enjoy a shifter romance now and then and this caught my attention with its atmospheric cover. The story begins with Brooke being kidnapped and she wakes up on-board a plane in a cage and wearing an electronic collar that prevents her from shifting into her Bobcat form . With help from her sister she escapes but she lands in an inhospitable wilderness with only a huge, mute male for company !
Kane cannot control his inner Bear and has retreated to the wilds of Canada to stop himself from hurting anyone else. When he finds himself protecting the lovely Brooke he knows he has to keep his distance no matter what. Trouble is she's about to go into heat and neither man nor beast is prepared for that !
This had a very intriguing overall plot but sadly for this reader there was so much steam and bedroom antics that it just felt unbalanced. I prefer sex to be used to enhance a story not direct it. There is a small amount of action but it is over very quickly which felt somewhat unsatisfying. I did like the characters and Kane in particular had an interesting background story. This is a happy for now ending which obviously leaves the reader needing the next book which catches up I'm guessing with Brookes sister.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

I should have had this book read, and the review written, several months ago. I am trying not to beat myself up because life does sometimes get in the way. The simple fact is the book is so good, I wished I had read it sooner. I ended up reading it in just two sittings. It is everything I love in a paranormal romance and has two great characters that are meant for each other even if they don’t know it yet.

Brooke and her sister are both Bobcat shifter. They have been kidnapped by unknown people, a collar placed on them that they can’t remove, and they can no longer shift into their animal form. When they both regain consciousness, they are on a cargo plane headed to an unknown destination.

While Brooke manages to get free and parashoots to safely, she is forced to leave her sister behind. Landing in a remote wilderness, Brooke stumbles across a primitive cabin that is inhabited by Kane, a mute bear shifter. Brooke wants nothing more than to leave and find out where her sister was taken and rescue her. However, without the ability to shift, she will never be able to survive in the wild in her human form. The only way out is the next supply plane, which will not arrive for another two weeks.

It will be a long two weeks before she can start looking for her sister. Unfortunately, her abductors are not about to lose their prize. Will the growing connection between her and Kane end up being a good thing or a determent to them both?

I enjoyed the plot, nothing overly new, but there were a few new ways of looking at shifters that I thought brought some new life to the plot. I especially liked the setting and the descriptive prose that I felt was better than most books in this genre. In addition, the character development was really good. I especially liked that we got a fair amount of backstory on both Kane and Brooke. I really connected with the characters and wanted everything to work in their favor.

I know this type of book is fluff; but it is great fluff. Highly entertaining! If you love paranormal romance with a good side of steaminess, this is the book to read.

This is a very thrilling start to a series. I love Kane, his backstory and his possible connections to the situation even though he has been alone in the woods for 6 years. It was interesting to see a slightly different aspect to shifters (like being controlled by a collar or being unable to speak). The chemistry between Brooke and Kane is off the charts and there is definitely lots of steam. Overall the concept of the story is very interesting and left me excited to read more, but there were some parts of this story that needed to be edited down. A majority of the first 67% of the book takes place in the wilds of Canada with only the very ending giving us the most information to move the plot along. I liked the hints that you get through the characters thoughts and dreams, but I found myself skipping through parts of chapters to get to something new. Great character creation, development and excellent plot concept. I am definitely excited to read more and recommend this as a series to start! I voluntarily reviewed this after receiving a free copy.

This girl throws up a ridiculous amount of times in the beginning. It is like her number one reaction to any sort of hardship. Scared? Barf. Guilty? Barf. Too hungry? Barf. In pain? Barf. Drugged? Barf. Panicking? Threaten to barf.

It gets much better after all the barfing goes away (maybe at like 20%).

I think Kane is what they call a cinnamon roll MMC. I would have liked to see more effort at communication on his part, but then I suppose it's completely in character for him not to.

I like that Brooke doesn't stubbornly cling to her past self like that's all she can ever be. Life surprises her, and while she was a barfing mess at first, eventually she just starts to roll with it.

The two of them are cute and not so insta-love that I couldn't stomach it. The mate thing was definitely used to rush a connection that would normally take time and conversation, but, overall, it was a nice read.
