Anh’s first book, The Happiest Refugee, is his enormously popular memoir recounting his perilous childhood journey in a tiny boat from war-torn Vietnam to Australia. The book became an instant hit and has won numerous awards including Australian Book of the Year.
Anh has since turned his attention to children’s book writing.
Weird Do is an illustrated series starring Weir (1st name), Do (2nd name), a kid with a very unfortunate name. Aimed at the 8+ market, these books have gone off the charts as national best-sellers, resulting in 14 books total and more on the way. The first Weir Do won the Australian Book Industry Award for Older Children (2014).
Other children's book series include Hotdog, the adventures of a sausage dog and also Ninja Kid, the escapades of a 10 year old Nerd who discovers he’s the world’s last ninja.
In 2019, Anh released Wolf Girl, a series about a little girl who gets lost in forest and befriends a group of dogs and an enormous Wolf who become her family. Then came Rise of the Mythix, which marks the first of a number of sagas described by Anh as ‘A superhero movie in a book’.
All of Anh Do’s books are mega bestsellers and all rate between 4-5 star averages on websites such as Goodreads and Amazon.
It’s clear that Anh is an exciting voice in literature, able to delight across age ranges and different genres with great success, and he isn’t planning to slow down any time soon.

Pow Pow Pig and his friends from the Z team were attempting to go to 2030 in their time machine, but they’d landed in Ancient Greece instead. The Olympics – complete with animals of all descriptions – were about to start their events when an apparition appeared, threatening all winners with a curse. And so it happened. Could Pow Pow and his friends solve the huge problem and once again take their time machine away from it all?
Let the Games Begin: Pow Pow Pig #2 by Aussie author Anh Do is a quick read, a rollicking ride through Ancient Greece and suitable for 6-10 year olds. Fun and entertaining, the talents of this author are vast! The many illustrations are by Peter Cheong.

You’ve gotta love a team that were tasked with saving the world not because of their unique blend of talents but because they were the only ones available. Z team hail from the year 2050 and their world is literally on fire.
They’re on a mission to travel back in time to before the point of no return to “convince the rich animals to help the poor.” That would be a difficult task in and of itself but it’s all a little bit more complicated than that because there are a few kinks to iron out in their time machine.
See, instead of taking them to 2030, it took them to the Middle Ages. While this was an awesome opportunity to meet new animals and have an adventure, it didn’t exactly help Z team save 2050.
So, it’s time to crank up the time machine again. Surely they’ll touch down in 2030 this time. Yeah, maybe not.
After storing their time machine using a trick they learned from Marty McFly when he spent time with his folks in 1955, Pow Pow Pig, Kung Fu Duck, Cha Cha Chicken and Barry the Goat set off to find out when they are.
It turns out they’re in Ancient Greece so their time machine is only off by a couple of millennia. The time machine needs time to recharge before they can try again so they have time to explore (and I need to stop saying ‘time’). Good thing their clothing magically morphs to suit the fashion of the era they’re visiting.
While they’re in Ancient Greece, the Z team do some ghostbusting and are serenaded by the musical genius that is Placido Flamingo (remind you of anyone?). Other famous animals include Alexander the Goat and Usain Colt.
There was a bit of an ends justifying the means message that I wasn’t entirely on board with, especially when one of the animals benefited from another’s misfortune. The animals are really cute, though, and although it seems like it’s going to be a long time before our team finally make it to 2030, I’m along for the ride.
I’m keen to find out when we’re going next. And I’m still loving the stickers that come with each book.

I skipped the first in this series, but read this one to evaluate it for our library collection. Ahn Do is incredibly prolific and very popular among our students.
This was just ok for me. Not laugh out loud funny, not particularly exciting, but probably enjoyable enough for a quick read by years 2-4.

Pow Pow Pig and his buddies are still trying to return to their home in the year of 2030.
Their time machine has other ideas however, stopping in completely random places. This time when they open the time machine door, everyone is wearing white sheets! Are they all ghosts?
No. Pow Pow Pig and his Z team have arrived in Ancient Greece. Deciding to explore while their time machine recharges they are thrilled to hear the roar of a crowd. The Ancient Olympics are about to begin!
The Z team are in awe of the talented athletes ready to compete. But this will be the strangest competition ever, as no-one wants to win!
Can Pow Pow Pig, Cha Cha Chicken, Kung Fu Duck, and Barry the Goat save the day?
This is No.2 in this funny series, with illustrations on nearly every page. These characters are brave time-travellers, making the most of each jump as they try to get home. Each story has a theme - this episode being inclusion, encouragement, and kindness.
Where or when will this group of brave and funny animals land next?
