Remember my life in that hand basket? Sean decides to come along for the ride as I try to outrun the people I thought were on my side. The people who manipulated me into working against everything I believe in. The same people who also want Sean dead and his research in their hands.

It's not all Sean is still a sexy, adorkable geek. And my heart still does that funny flutter thing whenever I see him. The fact we can't keep our hands off each other definitely makes the moments of sheer terror a little easier to handle.

This is part of a series, and for context on the larger world building, major antagonists, and the frenetic, esoteric, and mostly endearing supporting cast, many of whom are protagonists in earlier books, you’ll want to start at the beginning. I find this world an intriguingly dystopian take on a society full of magic and magical people who are vulnerable to all sorts of misunderstanding and manipulation. It’s hard, sometimes, to read about how hard it is to be part of that community in this world, but uplifting too to see characters pushing back against steep odds and plenty of peril. The protagonists in this novel are likable, earnest, and good for each other when they get a second or two to bond, rather than say, investigate evil plots and/or run for their lives, and Sean in particular won me over with his intelligence and integrity. Plus, he’s a lot snarkier than I think he gets credit for being, and I respect that in a character.

This was a new to me author. I did not read the previous two books in this series and was a but lost at the start of this book. Whilst reading it I got a better grasp on the underlying and current story. I am triggered to see where things end up in the next book in the series. Having said that I liked the characters of Sean and Carmine, wgen I find the time I will read book one and two just to get a better feel for the overall story and for aure to find out how somw of thw other characters came to be. For know I find the plot intrigueing, opposite groups in society trying to push their point of view/ thruth. Even if one of them seems to fabricate their truth.. I hope the 'better' side wins. In this book Sean and Carmine get their hfn.
