The Way of Nagomi: How to Find Peace & Harmony in Your Life

Rate this book
NAGOMI is the Japanese ideology that advocates embracing everything life throws at us so we can live peacefully and harmoniously.

There is no translation for the word nagomi in the English language, and yet it should be in everyone’s vocabulary. A popular and common concept in Japan, to achieve nagomi is to have peace of mind, emotional balance and wellbeing. This philosophy can be found at the very heart of Japanese culture, from the way food is prepared (mixing sweet, salt, sour, bitter and umami) to the way the ephemerality of the cherry blossom season is celebrated.

We know that every life will have joys and sorrows, opportunities and misfortunes, but in The Way of Nagomi, global bestselling author Ken Mogi explains why it’s important to truly accept the way of the world and balance all of these experiences, both positive and negative. By delving into Japan’s history, traditions and culture and providing a toolkit to help us to achieve satisfaction in our lives, Ken shows how we can all create nagomi for ourselves.

- mantenere buoni rapporti con i vostri cari anche nel disaccordo;
- imparare cose nuove restando fedeli a voi stessi;
- trovare un senso di pace in tutto quello che fate;
- mescolare e integrare gli elementi piú disparati, fino a ottenere un equilibrio armonioso;

Buon nagomi a tutti.

The Way of Nagomi is the latest book from Ken Mogi, who wrote the famous Ikigai

The book is broken down into the different aspects of Nagomi in Japanese culture. From relationships, creativity, learning, food to nature, Nagomi emphasizes the importance of external balance to have internal harmony and peace of mind. This is because the external elements we surround ourselves with have an influence to our perception. In Japan, the way food is prepared often mixes sweet, salt, sour, bitter and umami. The Japanese government also encourages 'shinrin-yoku', the habit of relaxing in the forest, letting go of our senses and being present in the moment.

The book also mentioned that Nagomi is the parental element to many other Japanese philosophies, including Ikigai. I found some examples from his previous book, Ikigai are reused here. This book seems to focus on providing examples of Nagomi across the decades. While Ikigai includes implementable steps to follow in our daily life - which I preferred.

Overall, a short book about Nagomi with cute illustrations. If you want to have an inkling about Japanese culture, this book serves as a good start.

Ken Mogi is a fascinating person. A distinguished scientist, who is also a popular media personality, I think you could even call him a household name in Japan. This is his second book in English. His first was on the Japanese term ikigai.

As I am sure most people are aware, there is an a kind of publishing industry boom in English books about Japanese words—and I seem to have collected quite a lot of them! From wabi-sabi and ikigai to kaizen, shinrinyoku, and kintsugi, a reader can barely keep up. Ikigai especially has captured a lot of attention, and Mogi’s was the only one I really liked on the subject, so I was excited—and surprised— that he had written a book on nagomi.

For me, nagomi captures more than anything else what I felt when I lived in Japan (and what is completely and painfully lacking in my life now). Like the other concepts above, it is a hard word to pin down in English.

One definition I found online, explained the term like this:

Nagomi= Nagomi' is an alternative reading of the kanji 和, which refers to all things Japanese, yet can also mean 'bring together'. Make a verb (nagomu or nagomi) out of it, and it refers to the feelings you have when spending time with good friends.

According to Mogi, nagomi is a fundamental Japanese concept—one that reaches far back into Japanese history— all the way to the kojiki, considered to be the oldest extant literary work in Japan. In the kojiki there is a line citing the spirit of harmony 和譲の精神 as being something to be encouraged by Japanese people.

Nagomi 和み is an alternative reading of “wa” 和 —which is the first character used to write my son’s name (Kazuya 和弥). “Wa” means harmony. It also is an alternative word for Japan and things Japanese.

And it is the name of a popular tea ceremony magazine

Nagomi means to be in harmony. Both in our hearts and with others. This feeling is in short supply in today’s world. The culture of the tea ceremony gives form to this ideal in our daily life. Nagomi magazine seeks to offer a lifestyle of tea which is also a lifestyle of nagomi. (My very rough translation).

Mogi’s book begins in food —even mentioning the way my favorite Kyoto gin, ki no bi, is itself an example of Japanese flavors harmonizing with a European spirit (ie gin). One of the definitions I have seen for nagomi is “reconciliation,” which is a word that always reminds me of the Catholic Inquisition, where sinners were reconciled through fire basically. Mogi doesn’t use this word in his book, but for me there is a kind of reconciling going on in examples he gives. To reconcile Japanese and foreign tastes in the ki no bi gin or katsu curry. There is something like this happening in all of his examples. Satoyama, brings together in harmony the mountains and village, while Ozu’s characters must negotiate personal happiness with their obligations (giri/ninjo) to attain a kind of inner peace.

Unlike in “wa,” “nagomi is active and involves care (teire 手入れ) and for me there is also something about being easily satisfied by something.

I think it is the quintessential Japanese word… but it also reminds me of my favorite Chinese poet, Li Qingzhao, whose sobriquet was to “easily satisfied” (号:易安). This is from a line by Tao Yuanming → 倚南窗以寄傲审容膝之易安 (Leaning on the southern window, I surrender my pride to nature and in this room scarely big enough to contain my knees, I am easily contented). The line, which is very famous, was taken from an essay called "Homecoming" (歸去來兮辭). The essay, written in 404 CE is about the poet's leaving officialdom to "return home" and devote the rest of his life to self-cultivation and the simple life. The essay inspired countless philosophers and poets in China and Japan to turn inward and to never forget that "less is more."

She also signed her works thus: 易安 "easily contented" and "the inhabitant who is easily contented" 易安居士.

I loved this simple but profound little book.

This book tends to ramble a lot. Which is interesting considering how short it is and how few words on a page there are! It also made me think that this book would work better as a different medium - a podcast or a youtube series maybe.
I found the author's previous book, The Little Book of Ikigai to be better than this one, however I still found much great value and food for thought in this one.

I’ve always been interested in Japan and Japanese culture so I was immediately attracted to learning about Nagomi and what it means to the Japanese culture. The book tagline summarizes Nagomi perfectly that it is a way of finding balance and peace in everything that you do, so that you can get through all and anything life throws your way in a peaceful and happy way. The book is divided into different topics (relationships, food, life, nature, etc) and uses some core principles to support funding Nagomi.

While I found the overall concepts, culture, and ideas really interesting and gripping, the actual book writing felt very slow and somewhat repetitive in nature to me. It also felt a bit like a historical textbook in some parts and I might have appreciated more practical guidance in a succinct way more.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Another book about a Japanese philosophy, at this point I would say one of many considering how many such books are on the shelves currently. It's not bad for goodness sake, but some times it feels like you're reading monstrous-level obviousness.

I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

I'm delighted when I knew Ken Mogi was writing another book after Ikigai. Because Ikigai is such a life changer for me, This book tells a different topic but shared a similar writing concept, which is very easy to read and understand.
I heard the concept of Nagomi for the first time when reading this book. Nagomi, in short, as the world changing so, do we. Nagomi is about accepting change and influence from the outside without losing our color. I learn many life lessons from Nagomi. Topics include: maintaining happy relationships, even in disagreement; learning new things while staying true to ourselves; finding peace in whatever we do; striking a harmonious balance, and achieving calm resonates with me.
It's a valuable book and very suitable to read in the New Year's vibe like now :)

"How to Find Peace & Harmony in Your Life" is the subtitle of this book. I already have a lot of peace of harmony in my life, but I found this pleasant little book to be an excellent insight into the Japanese culture. For starters, the Japanese are a very homogeneous group. Mogi mentions in passing, when discussing the value of anonymity as opposed to the search for celebrity, that the Japanese are so homogeneous that children whose hair shows red tinges are encouraged to dye their hair a proper black, like the rest of their fellow citizens. There is nothing Americans want less than to be like their fellow Americans. We are indeed a unique nation composed of various ethnic groups, races, and religions, and we all think we are 100% on the right track. We can truly say there is no such thing as an American way of life, so reading this book is a bit like visiting an alien world.

For example, the matter of religion. "It is interesting that Japanese society has always been relatively free of any dominant ideologies." An enviable position indeed. Japanese will have a Christian wedding because they're the most romantic, go to a New Year's Day ceremony at a Shinto shrine to start the year celebrating nature, and bury their dead with a traditional Buddhist funeral. Nagomi is about this kind of balance and peace in choosing a good life. Imagine living in a country where everyone respected each other's religious beliefs.

"Maintain happy relations with your loved ones, even if you disagree with them" is Mogi's first rule of nagomi. Because in the end, our lives should be about happy relations with loved ones and the natural world in which we lucky enough to live.
