My Real Self

Rate this book
The nail-biting conclusion of the My ... Self series will leave you speechless ... and question everything you have read before. Are you ready to know the truth?

My name is Alicia ... but you already know that by now. I am ... not normal, but am I truly a psychopath as I have always believed?

Josslyn and I used to be enemies, then friends, then sisters, and now ... I finally know the truth about who she really is, but it is not about us anymore. It is about putting an end to an evilness that I know is out there and is far too close for comfort. I cannot accomplish this mission alone ... everyone is against me, but now I have allies.

I will finish this once and for all. I will find out the truth about my past, but one of us may not survive it. Josslyn and I have always been one and the same ... but it is time to finally say goodbye and find out who I really am … my real self.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: Murder, swearing, rape (inferred), child abuse (inferred).

My Real Self is the third and final book in the My … Self series and finally answers the questions: Is Alicia truly a psychopath … and who really is Josslyn? Do not miss this twisted, shocking and heart-breaking end to the psychological series with a difference by Jessica Huntley!

Just...wow. Easily my favorite book in the whole trilogy! It wraps up everything nice and neat. The variety of emotions I went through on this reading journey was incredible and I honestly couldn't put the book down. I honestly had a few predictions coming into this book (some were correct) but I was NOT disappointed. If you've read the first two, you owe it to yourself to read this one as soon as possible. Amazing job Jessica. I will miss everyone in this series and can't wait to see what you have in store next.

A perfect ending to the series. All loose ends were tied off neatly while still keeping the mystery alive and exciting. Josslyn and Alicia were as dynamic as ever, and I really enjoyed some of the secondary characters that were introduced in this book. The ending was satisfying in a way that many final books in trilogies aren’t, so I have to say this was the best of the three books! What a rollercoaster, I can’t wait to see what Jessica comes up with next!!!

“My Real Self” is the third and final novel of Jessica Huntley’s “My…Self” series. If you haven’t read the previous two books, then you’re going to be at a slight disadvantage here, but this is to be expected from a continuous series, so I strongly advise reading the other books to experience the entire story from start to finish. Sisters Alicia and Josslyn share the same body but, following a protracted manipulation from Alicia, Josslyn was eventually suppressed and the emotionally stunted, psychopathic Alicia took control. However, they were bonded by a common enemy, influencing and changing each other, to the point where Alicia is now dead set on hunting down a cabal of despicable abusers known as “The Collective”. Having previously suffered at the hands of the Collective, Alicia is only further determined to avenge herself against them when she learns that her long lost birth father is the man behind the Collective.

Of course, Josslyn is still there, but her influence and presence are noticeably weakening. Personally, I’m okay with this as Josslyn is quite a needy, whiny character who’s constantly going on tangents, letting her emotions get the better of her, and stunting Alicia’s otherwise emotionless efficiency. The author clearly writes Josslyn and Alicia as being two extreme personalities, with one being overly emotional and the other struggling with her emotions; to emphasise this, Alicia doesn’t use contractions when she talks and requires Josslyn’s input to show empathy or politeness to others, while Josslyn sometimes needs Alicia’s edge to track down leads on the Collective or brutalise their members for more information. They’re also joined by Benjamin Willis, who is so mixed up in her crazy life that he’s willing to shield her and assist in locating the Collective, much to Alicia’s chagrin. Ben is certainly no knight in shining armour; if anything, his presence reinforces how independent Alicia is, and her stubbornness constantly causes frequent arguments between the two, but he stands by her because he truly loves them both. His presence also helps to emphasis the changes occurring to Alicia’s character; despite claiming to be a cold-hearted psychopath, she fears to lose her sister and has no desire to see Ben get hurt as a result of their investigation, and much of the book is geared towards exploring how Alicia handles these unfamiliar emotions.

Alicia’s investigation sees her tracking down tenuous leads and getting one step closer to her abhorrent father with every chapter. Her father, Frank Master, is quite the despicable sadist; he’s spent a lifetime abusing and raping women but has remained anonymous. Alicia, however, is nothing if not persistent and adaptable and forcibly uses every resource available to work her way towards a dramatic showdown with him. Prior to this, much of the narrative focuses on the potential danger of Josslyn’s influence forever leaving her, and the fear each of them have that this could mean she snaps and become everything her father has tried to manipulate her into being. Thus, a prominent arc in the book is Alicia coming to terms with her complex and traumatic upbringing and learning to truly evolve into a better person, but whether she’s actually successful at this or not is constantly left in question and is a mystery that you’ll have to find out for yourself by reading the book.

Overall, this was a dramatic and intense conclusion to the “My…Self” series; there are a lot of layers and complex revelations throughout the course of the trilogy, but especially in this final book. This, and the many recaps, can slow things down a bit, but this actually benefits the story as it’s so extreme and unsettling that it helps to take a break, or have poignant moments between Alicia and Josslyn (and them and Ben). The exploration of Alicia and Josslyn’s relationship, and the truth of their situation, is fascinating; Jessica scatters numerous twists and revelations that really up the ante for the finale, and results in a suitably bloody and dramatic conclusion. It’s worth noting the trigger warnings if you’re squeamish, but I enjoyed the depiction of a strong, determined female character striking back against these really horrific male characters and Jessica’s descriptions of gore and violence. Definitely read the previous two books before delving into this one, as the entire series is well worth your time and this acts as a suitably fitting end to the trilogy.

That’s it. I binged the final book in the My … Self trilogy in one sitting, just like I did with the first and second!

This one has got to be my favourite of the 3 - I felt so much more emotion in this one! There were a couple of moments I almost cried 🥲 definitely consistent with other two books in terms of the hard-hitting topics and very dark content!

I absolutely adore Josslyn and Alicia, and I’ve loved reading their journey over the course of the three books! The relationship they have with each other, and the development of their relationships with others has been so lovely to read!! 🥺

The psychological elements of this book are the bits that first piqued my interest, and they definitely don’t disappoint! There are so many twists and turns and unexpected reveals throughout this trilogy that you couldn’t possibly sit comfortably through any of them!

All 3 books were fairly short and have short snappy chapters, so they’re perfect to binge in one go 👀

I will always recommend this series to anyone, and I’m so sad it’s over!!

Thank you so much to @jessica_reading_writing for letting me be part of the ARC team for books 2 and 3!

And so it finishes... the series has come to an end and what a final book. This book had me gripped from page 1.

I've loved all the books within this series, this book really draws you in and gives you the perfect ending. There are so many twists that I really didn't see coming.

Everytime I hear of the names Alicia and Josslyn, I will be transported back to this epic collection of books that will hold a dark place in my heart.

I'm excited to see what Jessica comes up with next but have loved being on this journey.

In all honestly this has got to be my favourite of the three books I've written in this series.
It's dark, funny, heart-breaking but also happy. I really hope that I've ended this series the way my readers want it to end (although you can't please everyone!)

I admit I cried while writing a particular scene in this book. It is a psychological thriller, but the characters have grown so much since the first book and I'm sad to say goodbye to them.

I don’t even know where to start with this review. This book was such an amazing ending to the My Self series. I am so sad this is over but the author saved the best for last.

The author took the reader on such an incredible journey. We got to see Alicia/Josslyn develop even more as well as learn even more about her. I didn’t think there was much more to know about her but there definitely was more. I can only describe this as going from a 500 piece puzzle to a 1000 piece puzzle. That’s how much I felt I learn about the main character. I felt very satisfied with the events which happened in this book.

This book does explore some potential triggering topics which I will list at the end of my review. It was heartbreaking to discover the things which happened in the past, I could feel the emotion coming out of the book. I was gripped immediately when I started this book, especially after how the second book ended. The suspense and fast pace was consistent throughout the series which was amazing. It really didn’t feel like I read a whole three books because how of quick I read them.

I highly recommend this series. This definitely is one of my favourite series’ I have ever read. It explores some unique topics and some very entertaining characters.

This is the third book in the My Self Trilogy and it certainly ended the series with a bang!

I want to start by saying that the cover art for the trilogy has been lovely and it’s kept to the same theme which I’ve loved.

The thing with this trilogy is that you can’t say too much without spoiling anything. Of course you have an idea going in but it doesn’t go where you expect it to. This final story showed the characters not holding back and really even surprising themselves as to who they really are. It was really well written and well thought out.

Jessica has made me feel for Josslyn and Alicia from the start and I was heavily invested as to how this would end for them. They are so different to each other but are also are not. How they navigate family, relationships and friends has been really interesting to read and see develop. I have finished the trilogy having thoroughly enjoyed the journey and the ending for the characters. It could have gone a few ways but I believe Jessica definitely picked the right one. It is a shame that it has ended though!

I definitely recommend you read this trilogy, starting with My Dark Self, then My True Self and finally My Real Self. I’ve been on a book tour with Love Books Tours and on Jessica’s arc team since the start and have loved it. I hope you do too!

I really did enjoy this book. I personally think it was my favorite out of the three. It brought it all together and ended it perfectly. I was sick and had the pleasure of bunkering down in bed and reading it none stop till it was finished. Well done! A bitter sweet end to an incredible trilogy.

The final instalment in the My... Self series and what a corker it is! My Real Self continues on after the events of book two and this time we follow Alicia and co. as they hunt down a group of sexual predators and possible murderers. The closer they get, the more dangerous it becomes and as secrets are revealed, it becomes clear that Alicia has a lot to lose.

Fabulous closing addition to the series, I was gripped right from the start and, just like book two, I read this in one day. As before, the writing is easy to read and the chapters are particularly fast-paced and short. The character development continues and really adds to the angst I felt as I was nearing the end of the story. Very emotional in places and suspenseful in others.

Needs to be read as part of the series and I would highly recommend.

Wow! What a conclusion to a great series! I think My Real Self was my favorite book in the series. I had no clue what direction this book would take, and let me tell you, I couldn't have predicted the ending. So many details! And what I thought I knew about everything went out the window. I'm not sure how the author kept it all straight, but she did, and it was brilliant. It was emotional too! There were a few parts that made my heart tug. Also, I loved the ending. I won't say more because of spoilers. So, if you're looking for a binge-worthy series, look no further. I highly recommend this one to anyone searching for something unique, different, and murderous!

OMG this series is AMAZING!
I loved it so freaking much.

This series is so unique and absolutely pulled me in. I devoured the entire twisted series in a week.

The books surprisingly got better and better as the series progressed (we all know this is rare when it comes to a series). But I absolutely could not get enough and am now in one hell of a book hangover.

Oh my heart 💔 My Real Self is the third and final instalment in the My … Self trilogy. And I am so sad it’s over!! I never expected to feel so emotional at a thriller before, and such a dark one at that. That being said, this thriller is so much more than that. Whilst it still has the elements we all LOVE in a thriller, such as the dark, gritty, gorey details and the heart-racing suspense where you feel like you could jump out your skin at any moment, it’s also a story of self discovery, having experienced the worst most unimaginable childhood traumas, but being a resilient, strong, bad ass woman despite this 👊🏼

It honestly amazes me that authors can think up such intricate plot lines and twist, and execute them in such a way you’re completely blind sighted and left literally shocked to the core. Jessica has done exactly this best of all throughout this entire trilogy. After book 2 I wasn’t sure what more she could come up with to surprise me, but she did!! The QUEEN of plot twists 👑

Alicia and Josslyn seem so real, and we go on quite the journey with them, they really do feel like your friends. I’m super sad to have ended this series. HOWEVER, I am more than satisfied with the ending and how everything was wrapped up. Yes, yes, my emotions are high right now after just getting engaged, selling our house and having an offer accepted on a new beautiful home all within 36 hours, but I friggin’ cried twice 😂 if you’ve read this book, you’ll know the parts..

My Real Self is a thrilling ride full of suspense that packs an emotional punch. If you haven’t yet read this trilogy please do, I already wish I could read it for the first time all over again!

Im a big fan of the My.. Self series so I had mixed emotions about this one! This is the third and final book in the trilogy so it was upsetting knowing your reading the final book 😢

So one of the reasons I’m such a fan of these books is that the two main characters Alicia & Josslyn are just amazing, I love that the books are thrillers but they bring so much humour to the story. I love the chemistry, the bickering, the similarities and differences they have.. I just love them so I was excited to see where it went with them both.

The story like the other two is really gripping, Jessica writes such fast paced, interesting stories that really keeps you guessing. I love that there’s a psychological element in them all.. I would say more so in this one. Some parts were hard to read and I’d definitely recommend looking up trigger warnings but I found it really interesting looking into people’s pasts and how it affected behaviours. The whole story is just so unique and I’ve loved seeing the character development throughout.

I was also really happy that Ben was in the book, I really liked his character in the last one and I loved how he created such a contrast but also brought the sisters together

I thought the book ended perfectly. It’s always a bit of a worry isn’t it how a series will end but it was done very well 🙂

I absolutely loved My Real Self and it was 100% my fave book in the series. When I finished My True Self I wasn’t too sure what direction this book was going to go on and it didn’t disappoint at all.

I know for me sometimes with series nothing ever lives up to the first book or by the end of the last book I’m left feeling underwhelmed but this is not the case at all with My…Self series. Every book was great and My Real Self definitely wrapped up the series really well, it gets 5 ⭐️ from me!

I loved Josslyn and Alicia, they are definitely characters I won’t be forgetting anytime soon! Again like the first 2 books in the series there was twists and turns I didn’t predict myself, I just never saw them coming and I was shook.
It’s certainly a dark and emotional read so I’d recommend checking out the trigger warnings before reading.

I can’t believe the series is over now I thoroughly enjoyed it! The concept was really clever and I haven’t read any series like it previously. I can’t wait to see what Jessica brings out next as I know I’ll be picking it up for sure😊

Perfect conclusion

I have read every book in this series and the author never disappoints. Perfect name for what the story unfolds as the main character learns the whole truth about her past, what she indures, who her parents were, what happened when she was young, how she came to live with her adoptive parents and so much more. I loved seeing Alicia change and grow, it was a sad story, for so many reasons and yet another loss I wish didn't happen, but it was a journey of self discovery and acceptance. The ending of the book holds it all, I won't spoil anything for you, it's a prefect ending for a great series and I would suggest reading it to the end as it gives you all the feels. Ones you want and might not want at the same time. The author did an amazing job and I can't wait to see what comes next.

An exceptional conclusion to The ... Self Trilogy. I'm a little heartbroken that we won't be seeing more of Alicia/Josslyn, but the way Ms Huntley brought the story full circle was enough for me to close the book with a thrilling smile.

Amazing closure to a brilliant series-a must read!

I am a big fan of Jessica Huntley having read this series and 'The Darkness Within Ourselves ' (highly recommended if not read already) and I must say I was excited but also like I always am with a great series a bit of trepidation but this book did not disappoint.

The things I liked were the continued sister relationship between Jossyln and Alicia it was nice to see their development as sisters; they battled less but we're more a team. I also liked the portrayal of the disassociated identity disorder, Huntley depicted this complex issue with an air of simplicity weaving it into the integral storyline.

I enjoyed the storyline, it was complex and clever but not far fetched and Huntley makes it very believable. I really enjoyed how Huntley explains the impact of severe trauma through the storyline.

Bad points: really none, except when is the next book!

A great read and I really hope that Huntley writes lots more!
