Sometimes what you want and what you need are two very different things.
Always relegated to the "friends with benefits" corner of small town River Bend, Jenny Riley is done giving the milk for free. Falling hard for a bad boy? Not in the plan, either.
Sexy, emotionally-wounded Marine Reservist Brody Nelson just needs someone to lend an ear. A friend. Friends to lovers? That’s more than he bargained for, especially with a woman who lives on the other side of Nebraska.
Neither wants a relationship. Until that’s all either of them can think about, despite the miles between them.
Author of sexy, small town romance. Lover of banana Laffy Taffy, 80's ballads, 90's rock, and road trips. Location: Wisconsin. Sign: Sagittarius. Religion: Coffee and naps.
I am always happy to return to River Bend and its inhabitants, Molly McLain has created a series that just keeps getting better with each book that she adds to it, and Jenny and Brody’s story is absolutely no exception.
I think what I liked most about Can’t Resist Him, (apart from my favorite type of piercing!) is that both Jenny and Brody were both dealing with their own sets of issues. Jenny is mainly struggling with self-confidence and self-worth after years of being with the wrong types of men.
He was as lost as she was.
While Brody’s feelings of guilt, his struggles with grief and the PTSD that he is afraid to admit to with his loved ones. But together they both offered the other what they needed to be strong and accept themselves and their pasts for what they are, and start looking towards the future. It made their story an outstanding and emotional read for me.
But in a good way, I think if an author can pull you into a couple’s story on an emotional level then they have nailed their personalities and characteristics perfectly, and Molly did this for me, and I pretty much read this book in one sitting.
”You’re going to make me love you… “That’s the plan.”
There are some pretty entertaining moments between Brody and the guys, and Jenny with the girls as well, and I like that Molly always remembers to bring the previous River Bend couples in to the books so that you get a check-in with them, it keeps the series fluid, and makes the addition of new characters to the group and the town as it progresses easy to manage in relation to remembering them.
If you hadn’t already guessed I loved this book, I love this series, and I cannot wait for more from the town of River Bend and it’s past and future couples in Molly’s forthcoming releases.
ARC generously provided by the author, and it was, as it always is, my absolute pleasure to provide the above honest review.
I LOVED it! No insta-love, no insta-lust just a great romance with plenty of love and hot sex.
When I started, I wasn't too sure about Jenny but she grew on me. I loved her group of friends. Brody was amazing and perfect for Jenny. Ms. McLain did a great job with his journey through PTSD. The gang's all here for this book.
Now...the next book is her ex, Reed. Mia better put him through the wringer, and he'd better have a 180 degree change. Right now I really don't care for him at all.
This was a really hard review for me to compose. Not because the story was flawed, but quite the opposite. Not only was this story flawless, but it took me to a place of euphoria when I read it. And I'm not sure I can find the words to convey this to all you future readers, but I can only hope you trust me when I say ... THIS IS A MUST READ!
We've all read good stories. We've all read great stories. But very few people have read stories that lift their spirits from page one, because such stories are very far and few in between. Can't Resist Him is one of those stories.
Jenny Riley has played the girl with benefits all her life. If you've read the books before this in the series, then you've met Jenny a time or two. She plays the confident girl that doesn't need a man and is happy just being the bench warmer. But that's not who she really is. Who she really is, is the girl who lacks self confidence and doesn't think she deserves better than benefits, because that's all she's ever had...but then Brody Nelson came along and turned her whole world topsy-turvy. Brody Nelson is a wounded Marine home on leave. But his leave is not for time off or vacation. Tragedy struck his team while overseas and now Brody is home dealing with the aftermath. He has pain and guilt and sorrow and most of all, he's suffering from PTSD that not only is he not willing to admit to himself, but he's hiding it from his loved ones.
Brody and Jenny brought out the best in each other. Their journey to HEA was not always easy, there were bumps on the road, but at no point did my spirits falter. Molly McLain took me on an emotionally charged ride with her writing and storytelling skills. This story was uplifting, romantic, sexy and well thought out. She spun a tale I could feel and relate to. Jenny didn't just wake up one day and be ok with who she was and Brody didn't just get over what happened in his past. They both worked together to help each other deal with their pasts and move on to their future. As I read page after page after page, the only thing I felt was trust and hope. I had a smile on my face from the moment I started reading. Brody and Jenny spoke to me in a way that very few characters ever do. PHENOMENAL JOB, Molly!!
Brody & Jenny ~~ Their meeting was serendipitous, their love is kismet. They are a perfect fit. #TRUST
"You're gonna make me love you," she whispered ... His chest shook as he exhaled ... "That's the plan, sugar."
Although this is book four in the series each can be read as a standalone, I absolutely love that because now I'm excited to go back and read the others since I haven't. I'm sure this will be my favorite because I absolutely loved Jenn and Brody's connection. They're just to hot and cute, the plot was nice the story line was paced great, I loved the wounded marine and them fighting to make each other better. Gah it had me blushy and mushy the whole book. Can't wait to read the others.
The very first thing I have to say about this book is, have you looked at the cover!? Yeah, that’s what made me want to read it. There is just something about it that I love. So anyway, Can’t Resist Him is the fourth book in the River Bend series by Molly McLain. Oddly enough, I had this whole series on my TBR marked to be read, and somehow missed them and jumped straight to this book. It can easily be read as a stand alone and it does have an HEA. It’s told from alternative third person point-of-view also.
You would think starting with the fourth book in a series I’d have been confused but I wasn’t in the least. The Author has done a magnificent job of letting you know who is in the other books, but not bringing so much forth that the lines blur and you need to read the other novels. That being said, before I even mention the main characters, I did love the co-stars in this book and fully plan to go back and read the first three.
Jenny struck me as a character that just finally has had enough. Sometimes it takes awhile for a girl to get to that point, or for a person to realize that they deserve better, and that’s where you find Jenny. She’s tough, and she sticks to her guns with the stance she takes in this book. Her personal life was a mess, with her side “Friends with Benefits” dude coming back when his other girls fell through. Then after the fact, it’s like he still wants a hold on her, basically to make him feel better about himself. You see her go through a lot, while still condensing it down into the size of the book as it is. On that front, her character growth is awesome.
Brody, oh Brody. This guy is so very close to book boyfriend material for me that it’s unreal. Brody is suffering from PTSD and he’s fighting the fact that he has PTSD. Not denial but, I have it, I don’t need to talk to anyone, just let me deal with it. The Corp. not just going to let that happen though. He’s a strong, silent type that gets the job done. He puts himself out there for everyone -but- himself. Extremely loyal and family oriented.
The way these two meet actually makes me chuckle. They are attracted to each other for sure, but just flat out tell the other, “I’m not sleeping with you.”. So in that regard, the attraction is instant, but the romance is a slow boil. It’s great mixture for at plot, I can say that much. It left me waiting to see what would happen next between them. They don’t have it easy and both are learning and growing… dealing with personal things on either side. The one other thing they having going for them is that do communicate well, which is a change from most romance novels. I enjoyed that bit!
While not an extremely long novel, it was good. Solid three stars for me, and as I said I will be going back to read the rest of the series. Great for commutes, long car trips or flights!

Can't Resist Him is book four in Molly McLain's River Bend series and, if you've been following the adventures of River Bend... this is the best one yet! Right? Don't worry if this is your first River Bend experience. Can't Resist Him can be read as a standalone without feeling as if you're missing much. However, you'll definitely want to go back and read the first three. Because Ms. McLain has combined sexy, smart, courageous men and women, with small town living into stories that come alive with emotion, adventure, and suspense.
Can't Resist Him drops us into the middle of a typical scene for Jenny Riley, owner and sole stylist of River Bend's only hair salon. Ladies man, Reed Fletcher ( I so want to kick him in the ass!) is ending their on again/off again friends-with-benefits relationship. Great timing. It's the holiday season and Jenny is about to head to Vegas for their friends Mark and Ally's sure-to-be romantic New Year's Eve wedding. Not only is Jenny feeling the bite of loneliness, she's also feeling quite the loser. Seems as if every one of her friends has a significant other at this point in their lives. Jenny, on the other hand, can't seem to find that guy meant for her. And she's beginning to think he doesn't exist.
Marine Reservist Brody Nelson has just returned from his third tour in Afghanistan. Physically, he's recovered from his wounds. Emotionally, it's another story. This last tour resulted in the loss of two of his buddies and Brody is beating himself up over it. To make this whole nasty situation even worse, he's been grounded by the psych doc. Being a civilian is not in his plans. But then, neither is meeting a gorgeous woman at his friend Mark's wedding in Las Vegas.
I immediately loved Jenny and Brody. They each admit to being broken; Brody with his PTSD and guilt over the deaths of his buddies. Jenny with her shattered self confidence and lack of self esteem from choosing men based on what she believes she deserves rather than what she truly deserves. Even though the attraction between Jenny and Brody is magnetic, Ms. McLain doesn't use the insta-love angle. Instead, Jenny and Brody embark on a semi long distance friendship, each wanting to help the other through their issues. But, guess what? This just increases the sexual tension brewing between them. Hehe
Brody sees right through Jenny's insecurities and pushes her to go after what she wants and not accept less. He knows she is so much more than she believes.
She was the most real person he'd met in a long time. She'd give you the shirt off her back if you needed it. And she'd kick your ass a second later if you deserved it.
Brody isn't ready to spill his guts to Jenny yet. He's not sure he ever will be. And he definitely thinks he's not good enough for her. But the connection he feels is undeniably strong. She makes him feel better than he has in a long time.
And even a little bit of Jenny Riley was better than any therapy session could ever be.
Jenny has Brody's number as well. She's fully aware the dark dreams and guilt he punishes himself with need to be handled carefully. And she is by no means put off by his struggle with PTSD. He's such a good and honorable guy! Not the broken man he thinks he is. Jenny is amazed and humbled that Brody understands and respects her issues about men and relationships and isn't pushing her for more. But her resolve to keep this a friendship is crumbling. God help her, those tats, those muscles, and a rumor about a piercing...she wants him BAD.
Lest you all think this is a dark and brooding book, let me set you straight. Jenny and Brody have FUN. Their texts are cute and silly, their conversations hilarious and sexy. And when these two finally get down to it, the sex is wickedly hot! Jenny and Brody not only come alive on the pages, their conversations are the real stuff. The subject of PTSD is insightful and handled extremely well. And, thank goodness there wasn't any dragged out angst over Brody's I'm not good enough for you nonsense because that just wears me out. I so thoroughly enjoyed Can't Resist Him and highly recommend the River Bend series. I was given a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
OK, first of all I have to say I love the warning that Molly posted for this book. When I reviewed her first book I was critical of the fact that there was no disclaimer stating how many 4-letter words were in the book. (She added a warning before the book was published.) Understand that I don’t object to strong language and lots of hot sexy time. However, some readers want to know and will leave negative reviews if they buy a book that didn’t warn them in advance – Molly’s books don’t deserve negative reviews!
Each time I read a new book from Molly it becomes my favorite of hers and Can’t Resist Him is no exception. This book pounded all of my emotions. I felt so bad for Jenny. She feels like she is the town slut – especially after her on-again, off-again “boyfriend” dumps her – again. She is determined that she will no longer be that girl who gives away the milk for free.
Brody is a damaged hero. He suffered a huge loss during his last deployment and feels responsible for what happened. He wants to deploy again but the shrink won’t clear him; something he is deeply ashamed of and hasn’t even told his family.
Brody and Jenny run into each other in Las Vegas. At first they don’t realize that they have met each other before in River Bend where Jenny lives. While there is an instant attraction between the two, Jenny sticks to her new resolution and Brody is totally respectful of that.
Jenny and Brody help each other to heal and just when everything is going great it all goes to hell. You’ll have to read the book for yourself to find out how things resolve and Jenny and Brody finally get their HEA.
The characters in this book are well developed and the story line compelling. While this is part of a series it stands alone and you won’t feel lost if you haven’t read any of the other River Bend books (but you really should because they are great).
Thank you, Molly, for allowing me to continue on your ARC team even after criticizing your first book.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“I’m not going to pretend I’ve always been the kind of guy who knows what needs to be said, because I’m not. Hell, I’m not any different than the assholes who’ve used and abused you before. I’ve done a lot of stupid shit and fucked with the heads of a lot of perfectly nice girls. But you’re different for me, and that makes me want to be different for you, too.”
Swoon!!! Oh Brody, Brody, Brody...
Brody is a Marine that is currently on a mandatory leave due to PTSD from his last deployment. He is a Marine through and through but in order to prove he is stable enough to return to combat duty he has to go through therapy. Brody is also a "man's man" therapy is not for him.
Jenny is an incredibly smart and loving person that is terrified to give her heart away because the one person she'd been trying to give it to for years wouldn't reciprocate her feelings and left her feeling used. She has decided to avoid men all together.
While in Vegas for her friend's wedding Jenny and Brody meet in the hotel bar. They spend one amazing night together but because of Jenny's promise to herself their amazing night was spent talking.
“Nah, you can’t quit men. You just have to learn the difference between the cubic zirconium in this world and the real diamonds. Your gem is out there, baby girl. You just need to find him.”
What happens when a small world becomes smaller and Brody appears at Jenny's friend's party in River Bend? Jenny knew that Brody knew some of the same people she did but she never imagined seeing Brody in her home town let alone at her friend's house.
What happens when triggers come up and threaten to destroy everything that Jenny and Brody have built? Can they overcome their pasts to have a chance at a happily ever after?
Brody and Jenny have an undeniable connection from the beginning. The sexual tension is off the charts! I love the back and forth banter between them!! I also loved seeing the other River Bend cast that we have come to know and love.
I love the River Bend series and #4 Can't Resist Him, Jennifer & Brody's story, was a great addition. Jennifer has been Reed's go-to/rebound girl for years, but he's just pulled the "It's not you" line and she's had enough. Men are off her list for a good long while if not forever as far as she's concerned. Brody is an emotionally messed-up Marine, suffering from PTSD after a devastating explosion kills two close friends and comrades in arms during his last deployment. After a coincidental trip to Vegas, circumstances keep bringing these two wounded souls together and while attempting to remain "just friends", they realize resistance to the mutually, very hot attraction to each other is futile. If you haven't already started this series, do yourself a favour and GET started. You could probably read this as a standalone, but I recommend starting from the beginning if only for the total enjoyment of reading them all! :) Oh, and thanks Molly for the ARC for an honest review!
Brody, Brody, Brody!!! This cheer will be running through your head as you read Molly McLain’s River Bend #4. Molly’s Heroes are SEXY, HOT, and in Brody’s case DETERMINED. Jenny just wants to F*** Brody wants a whole lot more!! River Bend, Nebraska gets a whole lot Hotter when Brody moves back to claim the girl he’s Loved since he can remember. Once you have read this story, you also will not be able to Resist Brody!!
Received a copy of the title from author in exchange for an honest review.
This series just gets better and better...
In an earlier RIVER BEND review, I stated how I was surprised I liked that particular book, simply because I'd read a mini-book and I didn't truly care for it... Well, I can now tell you with 100% certainty that CAN'T HOLD BACK was the exception to this series -- I've loved every single one outside of that one title (and it's not that I didn't like the writing in CAN'T HOLD BACK, I just wasn't a huge Maddie fan).
In this newest installment, Jenny is learning how to have a backbone -- she's learning that she deserves more than a friends-with-benefits relationship where the guy can and will drop her without a moment's hesitation... and she learns how to say 'no' to him when he comes back wanting just a little bit more.
It certainly helps when you have a brooding Marine at your back, though.
Brody lives for the Corps. He eats, breathes, sleeps the Marine Corps and would rather he took a spot overseas than give that same spot to someone who had someone to come home to, someone to fight for. When he's forced to come home and recoop, he doesn't quite know what to do with himself and if there's one thing that Molly did extremely well with Brody's character, it was Brody's reluctance to talk to someone (his shrink). But the more he comes to know Jenny, the more he wants to fix whatever the heck's going on in his head -- it's slightly a subconscious effort, but it happens nonetheless.
Brody and Jenny knew one another by degrees of separation -- they had friends in the same circles. Now that Brody is doing linesman work, he doesn't have as much time to visit his buddies in River Bend, but with Jenny there... he starts making a point to head out that way.
I loved seeing our old River Bend friends, and the friendship Jenny has with these girls was so extremely real and one that I could relate to.
Brody may very well be my favorite male Molly has brought out so far. Not because of his tattoos and his... mmhmm down there ;) but because of his mind. Yes, he thinks it's broken, but the way he thinks, and the things he does... he was just a lovable character. His 'voice' in the story had me cracking up multiple times, from looking at a picture of himself {There were some real sexy pillow lines on his face...} to the very male, very Marine/military person colorful nouns he uses. I loved his flirty ways and got a kick out of him showing off his sleeve to try and get Jenny's attention (fail), but I also appreciated that the first time he talks to Jenny (before they realize they have mutual friends), he keeps eye contact rather than having wandering eyes -- major brownie points, my friend.
While Jenny calls Brody 'Superman', Brody starts to see Jenny as his own hero. She's real and considerate, and someone Brody knows without a doubt he wants in his corner. Jenny has her demons though --
I loved that both Jenny and Brody were strong individuals who were covering up a lot of hurt, but together, they were pretty dang amazing.
Side note: one of my biggest pet peeves is when Marine Corps is wrongly shortened to Corp... But Molly shut my mind up with her correction of my other pet peeve of people calling Marines 'soldiers'. I loved that Brody pointed out the major flaw in that statement! Oorah :)
Cant Resist Him (River Bend #4) -- Release Date --- September 15th
Molly McLain
5 stars
All right then … first of all … I need the previous 3.5 books because #4 was freaking awesome! Molly McLain I have been left out in the cold not knowing about you. This story was A-MAZ-ING.
First of all the cover – if you can get past the tats and the five o’clock shadow then you are doing better than me. I cant count the number of times I just swooshed back to the front just to say heeeeeyyyy prior to diving back in.
Second its no secret that I love .. I mean LOVE a story about a solider or soldiers or a entire freaking platoon. A Marine .. hes a MARINE! He .. is Brody Nelson. She is Jen Riley. And WE are in River Bend. Apparently I need to go to River Bend.
Lets just chat a bit about Brody. Mr. Marine man likes to own certain female parts and claims he is going to “eat them” until he owns them. …. Um … okay! … Dude what?!?!? ….. I think I was stuck on that statement for at least 30 minutes. I mean how do you reply to that in any way that makes sense or is coherent? Im just sayin’. Brody is a man’s man.
Jenny is a beautiful woman. A woman who feels she is enough to warm the bed but not enough to be the real deal for anyone thanks to Reed. This Reed person and I need to have a little come to Jesus but apparently he is up next. Maybe a I wished a few hard knocks for him in the next installment … I will never tell. The friends with benefits on and off again has finally done her in for the last time. Reed ... smeesh.
Brody and Jenny are a perfect pair. From the first meeting on New Years Eve things become complicated. Brody is suffering from PTSD. A previous tour left him with survivor’s guilt. Two great men were taken in the convoy. Brody doesn’t believe he deserves happiness and Jenny doesn’t think she is worth anything to anyone.
This is a survivors and warriors story on both accounts. The bottom line is whether or not you run or you face the demons and insecurities head on together with the person who believes in your more than you believe in yourself.
That’s all you are getting friends of mine. You need to click it up and you need to get to clicking the previous books while waiting for the next installment. I haven’t read them but I am heading over now to snatch them up. Molly says to check them out and Im going to. Enjoy – this is a wonderful and riveting read. Other books out now include:

I received an ARC for an honest review. Review to appear on Ramblings From Beneath The Sheets on release day. Thank you MOLLY! Im your new biggest fan!
This is the BEST of the River Bend series!! (I did receive an ARC of this book for an honest review however I am buying gift copies for friends as soon as it is released:)
This story will pull at your heart strings for sure as both the Hero and Heroine have issues to overcome. Brody and Jenny are so right for each other however that you will start rooting for them to work out from the beginning.
Jenny is a young woman who expects to work hard, supporting herself with her hair salon and being sole care taker for her Mother but what she doesn't expect is feel such a loss at being dumped by her on again/off again bed-buddy, Reed. She is slowly coming to grips with her perception of herself and realizes that she is worth more as a person/as a woman than to simply become the 'bed warmer of the town'. Jenny's struggle to strengthen her self image really set her apart from other heroines I've read recently. She admits that being a strong, single female doesn't mean that jumping from bed to bed keeps her strong, that it may have actually done the opposite. (imho anyway) Needless to say, Jenny is not looking to move into another relationship anytime soon.
Enter Brody Nelson. 3 tours in Afghanistan have left him hurting and fighting demons he's not sure he can win against. He's fighting to get himself back into the war, but has to find the courage to fix himself first. He then meets Jenny and recognizes a similar lost soul and he sweetly sets out to help her become stronger. He is definitely not looking for a relationship either, but Brody can't seem to stay away from Jenny and the peaceful feelings she brings over him. The author does an honest job of being respectful of the PTSD and the affects it has over not only the veterans, but their family members, significant others and fellow vets. My heart always goes out to these brave men and women and reading Brody's story was truly no different. He is definitely an automatic 'book boyfriend'.
There is definitely an instant connection between Jenny and Brody, but the relationship develops at its own pace. Not that they won't later claim 'insta-love' and not that there definitely isn't some very spicy action between the two, but considering where their heads are at, I thought the story developed in a believable manner. The story and the fun is in the journey these two will make and will keep you reading nonstop until the last page.
I'm ready for the next RB release, but will keep myself busy re-reading Brody's story until then!!
Oh Brody.....where do I even begin with my love of this book and all things Brody?
I have always really enjoyed this Author's books but this one was just that little bit more and it made me go crazy! I literally was unable to put this one down.
I absolutely loved the extra depth that Molly put into this one. Brody's story was absolutely amazing and sucked me completely in. I may not know a ton about PTSD but I'm pretty damn sure that Molly was able to do this story justice. She went about telling a story about a PTSD sufferer with a delicate hand yet at the same time was able to put a remarkable amount of depth and accuracy behind it. As I reader I was able to get a complete understanding of his struggles and pain and that is something that I really appreciate in an amazing story.
I loved the strength that was Jenny. Her character was amazing though and through and literally left you sitting in awe of her strength and courage. The way she dealt with Brody was beautiful and touching and in reality a real eye opener into what the other side of PTSD deals with.
However put all of the emotion and depth aside and you are left with an amazingly HOT read. This book had me panting and shifting around in my seat in frustration. The Author did an amazing job at creating so awesome angst. Angst that will literally leave you wanting to jump into your kindle, give Jenny a shake and scream at her to just jump Brody's bones already!!!!
There isn't much more I can say about this one. It is an absolute must read in every sense and I can't recommend it enough!
I freaking LOVED this book from page one I was cheering for Jenny and then when she meets Brody again I couldn't put the book down. I didn't just love this story, I have read this entire series and I think this is the best story in this entire series and Brody is the most romantic Hero yet in River Bend.
I really don't want to spoil too much but this book is a lot of fun. Jenny says whatever she wants and Brody takes it all and gives it right back at her. The are freaking fabulous together and my absolute fave River Bend couple.
If you have hated Reed and wanted to see him get what he deserves, OMG I cheered so many times as he saw Jenny move on with such a hot fella. Brody is strong and he is messed up, but he also wants Jenny anyway he can get her and Jenny is a super tough cookie.
The story starts at Mark and Ally's wedding in Vegas and Ally and the gang have several scenes in this book and I loved that. Brody and Jen meet in Vegas an have a magical night but totally in not the way you would think (I am not spoiling what happened) but I loved the whole Vegas adventure.
Then Brody decides to visit Jen and his friends and thats really when the fun starts. This book had it all. It will make you laugh, cheer and even blush and maybe even shed a tear or two.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC from Molly for an honest review. I am a member of her FB Reading Group.
CANT RESIST HIM: #5th book in River Bend I have been reading Molly McLains River Bend books from the beginning and this book was great..Two people who go from friends to lovers. It was nice to see.
Jenny Riley was tired of being used, and Brody Nelson was just leaving the Marine Corp...but not by choice...They were both dealing with situations, maybe just maybe they could help each other..In fact the first night they meet, that's exactly what they do. They both agree no sex. That was a little surprising to both of them. Well they didn't even give it a second thought. It wasn't important...How would things transpire between them?
Brody knew that Jenn was someone who saw him in a different way. No one believed in him, but she did..he finally trusted her enough to tell her his secret. Not a lie he was scared to tell her. When he did, she didn't run. It was comforting.
I loved what this story showed. The trust, faith, and beauty within Brody and Jenn..
A must read..have you read the rest of River Bend. It really is a great small town. Friends stick by you, and watch your back.
let me just start off by saying that I am a HUGE Molly McLain fan! I have loved everything she has written and Can't Resist Him was no exception, in fact, this was even better than expected and I can't say enough about this story!! This book is the perfect combination of super sexy, amazingly romantic and heartbreakingly emotional. Brody is the perfect male hero, a military tough guy who has experienced a tragedy that has left him broken. He has a heart of gold and lots of tattoos, oh and don't forget a very strategic piercing ;). Jenny is, on the surface a tough chick but deep down she has been hurt over and over and has been left pretty scorned and damaged. These two characters come together in the most beautiful way and you can really feel the underlying friendship between them. Don't get me wrong though, as sweet and romantic it is, there is no shortage of steam! Even though this book is a part of the River Bend series I think it could easily be read as a standalone. I highly recommend this book as well as the rest of the series and I anxiously await Molly's next amazing story!!!
This series is such a great series to read because you fall in love with each couple, but I'm must admit this was my favorite book in the series. Jenny wasn't some girl trying to make ends meet, she was a business owner who cared for her clients, a daughter who loved her mother, a friend who supported her friends, and a woman who mistakeningly thought having sex and always being available would put a ring on her finger and a babies on the way. She learned 10 years later that she needed to stop being a doormat to a man who just used her and start caring for herself. Brody is the all American good looking nice guy until he sees too much in war and comes home with a wicked cause of PTSD and too many demons. Both realize (one very reluctantly) they need to start taking care of themselves. Once they do, they find each other, start repairing hurts, somehow fall in love, and realize they both are better people because of each others love and support than being by themselves.
Ohhhhh Brody. I am madly in love with you. As I am sure half the female population will be after reading this book.
Brody is dealing with PTSD after the death of two of his friends over seas and he is on mandatory leave. Which he is not happy about. Jenny is, well she is just kind of lost. She has been in love with her on again off again "fuck buddy" for ten years and he has decided to leave her behind. So now she needs to move on.
Two lost souls find each other and help each other mend. It's beautiful, it's funny, and it sure as hell sexy!
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Jenn has opened herself up too many times, especially where Reed is concerned. After deciding to go on a break from men, she runs into Brody in Las Vegas. Weird things happen to throw them together. Brody is still recovering from his last tour. Continuously beating himself up for the deaths of his friends, the calm he feels when Jenn stumbles into his path is undeniable. The story was great especially with respect to a wounded warrior. Jenn and Brody, what a great couple. I can't wait to see what's next in the town of River's Bend.
Brody is like any other man when it comes to women and their girly bits, "Brody launched forward in the seat, his inner teenage boy coming out in full force. “Are you kidding me? You wax other chicks?” Sweet Lord Almighty the boy knows how to show appreciation, “oh, you’ve got it all wrong, sugar— I have a whole new appreciation for what you do.” His hands slid from her lower back to her a**, pulling her hips against his. Unless he had a stick of dynamite in his jeans, he wasn’t lying." I love this series the characters are always well developed and put together well.

REVIEW: CAN'T RESIST HIM (RIVER BEND # 4) BY MOLLY MCLAIN
Can't Resist Him by Molly McLainMy rating: 5 of 5 starsCan't Resist Him a moving turn on a friends to lovers relationship. Molly McLain did a exquisite job of guiding the readers through this impassioned story of hope, absolution, maturity and tenderness. Brody and Jenny did not have an easy road. Painful experiences caused each to close their hearts to emotional upheaval. The fact that these two characters did not start off as anything more than acquaintances and slowly progressed to friendship, then love is what sealed the deal for me. Trust had to be built, a relationship had to be formed and love had to grow. I loved that because you normally do not see that within romances. I was blessed to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Can't Resist Him is emotional but valuable read.View all my reviews
About Author: Molly McLain
Like many novelists, especially romance writers, my infatuation with a good love story began early. I don’t remember exactly how old I was, but I’ll admit that Barbie and Ken acted more than a couple of the story lines I had in my head (sorry, Mom, but, no, not all of them were kid-appropriate). The obsession continued to grow as I got older and, whenever I left home, I always had a wire-bound notebook and a blue ballpoint pen in hand. In fact, every August, I still get that goofy, schoolgirl itch to buy up oodles of pens and paper, because, while I love my laptop, nothing compares to writing long-hand. If the house is quiet and there’s a thunderstorm rumbling outside, even better.
Not that I have the slightest a clue what a quiet house is anymore. Having three rambunctious (but awesome) kids, a zippy dog and a pesky cat has completely blurred my memory of peace and quiet. Oh, and I have a husband too–I call him the FisherGuy–and he’s probably louder and crazier than all the rest. I think I’ll keep him though. After all, he keeps me in fresh fish year-round (yum!) and he’s good hero material. Did I mention he’s also a firefighter?
We live in Northern Wisconsin and, let me tell ya, living here has provided lots of small-town fodder for this writer’s overactive imagination. Of course, I know no one who’s lived anything close to the steamy experiences I write about (not that I’d tell ya if I did *wink*). There’s something inherently sexy about not knowing what goes on behind closed doors…or even better, letting my imagination run free, concocting all kinds of stories and scenarios and putting them down on paper. Or my laptop.
2014 is going to be a big year for me, as I debut my first novel early in the spring and the majority of the remaining series as the year goes on. I’ll also be releasing at least one, hopefully two, books in a second series. Both are set in small towns and both will feature smart, spunky heroines and sexy, smokin’ hot heroes. Oh, and romance…sometimes sweet and sometimes sizzling.
It was New Year’s Eve and Jenny Riley and Brody Nelson had met for the first time as far as Jenny knew. Later was later told by Brody it was the second. You see Jenny had a friends with benefits situation with Reed Fletcher that she knew since high school. Until recently when Reed found the girl of his dreams again. Therefore, dropping Jenny as a bed buddy but not as a friend, so he thought. Especially since that was the normal M.O. Jenny was, “Not anymore! All men were asses! I am done giving my milk away for free!” At some point she had met Brody when she and Reed were out with their friends. But since she had been hoping Reed would really see her and fall in love with her one day he didn’t. What he said at the beginning held true. Basically that it was just sex, he wasn’t in love with her, and there wouldn’t be anything more than sex. How do guys do that? What does that mean? That you’re there on call, call girl, or what? So when her friend Ally gets married in Vegas she goes and her roomie leaves her the suite that they shared the night before their wedding. So she is there all alone. She starts going ape bat crazy being there all alone that the thoughts of a relaxing bath makes her crazier. Maybe that’s why she was with Reed so long he keep the loneliness away. Hating to be alone and yet hating to be alone in a bar on New Year’s Eve could be worse she says, “F” It!” Goes down for a few drinks when Brody who thinks she’s not just hot but sexy. Once I read, “Hot was how girls look, (and with her brown hair curviness,) “sexy was how a girl acted. If a hot girl didn’t know how to move her body, she was just hot.” That is what Brody saw yet he also saw a girl who had been hurt recently by a guy and no guy was going to get past the walls. He didn’t need that he had his own problems. They stamped him with PTSD. Three tours as a Marine and the UAS was messing with him. So he was a little messed up after having a few friends die in his arms. He could handle it he is a Marine after all. Right? Well, it didn’t work that way he had to talk to someone. It took an encounter with a curvy brunette to get him to somewhat agree to counseling. He’s there at least. It worked out that night at the bar when they bumped into each other going up to their rooms a sticky situation was brewing not of his making. Jenny could tell it was not of his making so she jumped in the mix to help when one of the potential players follows them to their rooms. She ends up with Brody in her room passed out at first. When he wakes they share a meal then truths are shared that cut like a knife. Causing a brick to be removed from their walls. Once they come to an agreement to stay out of each other’s business and then it was time to… A bond was formed in Vegas. Lack of sex actually cemented it for these two in a way having sex does it for others. Since these two were the eternal bed buddies it was time for a change up. Jenny because she was tired of the Reed rollercoaster. For Brody it was the trust and the safe connection to talk about his last tour where he lost two buddies. Find instead the woman he didn’t know he was looking for. This book was refreshing the way the author didn’t over do the PTSD but spoke of the struggle our strong proud service personnel have taking help to combat it. It’s real and we as a nation need to encourage it not make them ashamed of it. As Reed tried to make Jenny feel about Brody. I also like that his friends, counselor, and himself knew Jenny couldn’t fix him he had to. Yet he knew he liked who he was with her which got him to seek that help on a real basis. I totally enjoyed the books funny parts, erotic parts, and gut wrenching parts too. This author pulled you through a lot of different emotions but made it better in the end yet in a real way. Totally worth your read. I give this 5 stars. Provided by netgalley.com. Follow us at: www.1rad-readerreviews.com
Can't resist him is a romantic novel about taking a chance and learning to live. This book goes over some content that might be triggers for certain people, so fair warning. This is a story about a woman and a man that each have their own personal demons. The author makes the readers ask themselves: Can these two characters come together and work out their issues or will their issues ultimately cause them chaos and heartbreak?
Molly McLain did an amazing job at starting this book out. She gives us a peak of the issues each character faces, which sets up the question mentioned above. Then she is able to integrate the characters together in an interesting encounter which makes the reader question if this are these characters meant to meet at this specific time due to fate. This encounter starts the beginning of Jenny and Brody and the slow burn that is their relationship.
What I love most about this book is that the characters develop slowly, which is how I feel people in real life develop. Instead of a story about a man and woman who meet and solves all each other’s worries and issues, this is a story about the struggle of maintaining a relationship while also dealing with one’s own self-doubt and insecurities. It delves into the effects of a person’s demons and how they affect their whole life.
The heat in this book is sweltering. This story starts off with a slow burn, which definitely heats up as the story progresses. I will say that while the heat was top notch, this is also the area that I was a little disappointed in. I loved the scenes that were included in the book, but there was something mentioned in the book that never saw fruition. I would’ve loved to have seen the author carry out this particular portion of the book, but with that being said, I was happy with the rest.
Overall, this was an emotionally charged romantic novel that I would recommend to others who love romantic stories. I think this is one of the more realistic books I have read in regards to the relationship issues themselves. I also love how the author was not afraid to dive into situations and subjects that others might shy away from due to the seriousness. Kudos to Molly for doing the subject matter justice.

Can't Resist Him is the fourth book in the River Bend series from bestselling author Molly McLain and is, hands down, my favorite one in the series so far. It is difficult, indeed, to resist Brody Nelson and Jenny Riley, two people who are saddled with their own issues but discover a kinship unlike any other with one another. There's no doubting the attraction, but it goes deeper than the physical, with both of them keeping an open mind and heart and maintaining a level of honesty and respect--each a precursor to love.
I loved the playfulness that these two shared in their relationship, but there was also this intimacy that they never had with the people they were with in the past. Jenny was exactly what Brody needed to help him focus his energies on becoming someone who dealt with his PTSD so that he could be the person who deserved to be with someone like her. I liked how they were with each other's families and friends and how they simply clicked from the beginning. They made me smile and giggle and sigh and tear up a time or two.
The cast of characters does include familiar couples and faces, so while this can be read as a standalone, I'm recommending you read the series from the first book to this latest installment. Each one is a worthwhile read and reading the stories and getting to know the folks from River Bend is a great way for you to spend a weekend. I meant what I said two paragraphs ago--this is my favorite story and Brody and Jenny are now my favorite River Bend couple. I'm highly recommending Can't Resist Him and give it stars. ♥
This is the fourth book in the River Bend series but the first one that I have read. I was able to jump right in without knowing all of the background of the characters. That is, for sure, a testament to the writing of Ms. McLain. She can write characters like you know them, or like you want to know them, which is even better for selling books!
Jenny has been the girl who everybody used for sex but nobody ever really wanted a relationship with. She had low self-esteem when this book started and you wondered if that wasn’t the reason that she had allowed people to treat her this way. I think that a part of her thought that maybe by giving them what they wanted, they would fall in love with her despite telling her that this was only about sex. After her on again off again arrangement with Reed ends in him leaving her to pursue something “real” with another woman Jenny vows that she won’t be giving everything away for free anymore.
Along come Brody who is wounded and broken and not looking for anything or anyone because right now it’s all he can do to hold himself together. After several tours overseas and losing members of his team he is quietly suffering from PTSD and trying to deal with it on his own.
From the second they lay eyes on one another there is something between them, some spark of recognition where one pain recognizes the other. This is a story of blooming love, hope, and learning to trust that someone will be there for you even when you feel like you are completely alone.

Jenn is tired of always being the bridesmaid but never the bride. AFter her on/ off again relationship ends she bound and determined to stop being a doormat and give up guys for awhile. So on New Year's Eve in Vegas when she rescues a marine from some smarmy girls in a hotel she doesn't expect to see him again. Even after amazing night of no sex. A couple weeks later she runs into her sexy Marine at a friends party and soon they start a relationship of rebuilding eachother up. Unfortunately sometimes demons become to much and it takes a true hero to save them.
I loved how Molly made Jenn such a strong character. She had so many personal issues to deal with but she was willing to show Brody just how much stronger they were together. She was a rock and unflinchingly good and loving. Its very rare for an author to write such a strong female character that I love.
After reading this book I really can't wait for Reed's story. I would love to see how he manages to redeem himself and I can't wait for his woman to make him really work for it.
"He was her forever. And she’d fight to the death for him."
5 STAR READ!! I absolutely love, love, loved this book!! The chemistry between Brody and Jenn was palpable and steamy! Coming from a deployment when he lost two of his friends to an IED, Brody doesn't know how he is ever going to get over what had happened. Not only that, but he may not be able to go back to the Corps, and finish his job properly. He doesn't know if even sees a future, until he goes to the bar and runs into Jenn. Jenn is celebrating New Years by herself after the guy she had been seeing decided he wanted someone else. She ends up meeting, well brushing off Brody because she just wants to wallow in her sadness. Little does Jenn know, these two actually know each other from mutual friends. After one night of both of them getting out of a 4 way and spending the night together, things between these two heat up and lead them to a future they don't expect. Will Brody be able to look past his demons to a new future or will it ruin everything he has learned and worked hard for with Jenn.
I will definitely be reading more of these stories and hope there is more to come!!
