4 stars. My first monster smut romance.

So yeah. If you are on tik tok and end up on romance book tok you will eventually get into monster smut tok. Most of it is hetero but the ladies that post reviews and whatnot are amusing and I find their love of the genre affirming for some reason. We all like what we like some is just a little freakier than others, ya know?

Anyhoo that is a lot to say this is what I would call a real “monster” erotic romance as opposed to a regular paranormal shifter romance. Why? Because there are some spicy scenes that take place while the supernatural partner is in her shifted state. I have never not one time read that in any other paranormal romance not one time. Was it a bit weird? Yeah it was but the author makes it clear that intellect of the person is fully present even while shifted. This is also omegaverse so if you aren’t familiar, def google it as both things together might be a bridge too far. 😆

This is a quick read with all the usual shifter tropes plus the monster smut aspects. I thought it was really good for a quick erotic read that takes a walk on the wild side so to speak. If monster romance sound intriguing this book is probably a good introduction.

Will I be reading more? Hmmmm. Maybe? I am not necessarily going to go hunt it down but I would probably read another if the story sounded appealing.

Well, I decided to scroll blindly through a list of stuff recommended to me that I already had downloaded when picking my next book.
This was the result.
Don't get me wrong, it was well written, but neither erotica in general nor hyena penises in particular do it for me, so I definitely don't need to read this ever again.
But props for creativity

2.5 stars. A good, fun, super sexy paranormal romance, but it did leap over my 'how weird is too weird for you' line. Not by much! Only a little! This is a monster romance so I knew what I was getting into! But yeah, just a bit.

Ema is a struggling student at college, and has started having intense, realistic dreams about an unknown entity that leave her hot and bothered. At the same time, she meets Kiran, a hot new girl on campus, while reports of strange animal sightings around the college are on the rise. This is pretty much erotica, but there was a lot of heart to it, and I loved the intense attraction and how it was conveyed. It's nice when you go into a book not expecting a lot of romance, but then the little romantic bits really get you! The plot was honestly just filler, it could have used a closer edit for some tense stuff and it did get kinda corny, but ultimately, I didn't mind any of that. It was sweet and hot and I was here for it.

Kiran and her family are bultungin, a kind of werehyena, and it's a little disappointing that the author just shoe-horned them into America, but I mean, I understand not wanting to write outside of what you know. Mostly, I just wasn't into the sex while Kiran was in hyena form. I'm a wimp! But it was a little too animalistic for me, with the way she was described. Also, it was kinda disappointing that Ema would just jump to "has a penis = dude" while in the dream world with Forest/Kiran. It's not like she doesn't know trans people exist?

Still, I mostly liked this a lot! Good for a quick, hot read. I'm sure I'll check out the author again.

Just plain old erotica here that was surprisingly hot. Surprisingly for me at least. This is not my first foray into Human x Monster 🍆 or Omegaverse for that matter, but this is the first where the monster stayed in shifted form. My feelings are complicated here and I’m trying desperately to overlook why I liked this 🤣. The plot and setup is as thin as a pR0n film. This is a spicy novella that is a shallow and enjoyable as long as you don’t think too hard about it.

If you've ever wanted sapphic lucid dreaming hyena shifter soulmate erotica, well here ya go. It gets a little silly at times, but it's a fun ride mostly. (It's written in third person present tense.)

Includes: soulmates, lucid dreaming, size kink, tongue fucking, deep throating, squirting, anal fingering and insertion, praise kink.

Stuff I didn't like:
Kiran is a dark skinned bultungin - werehyena from Central African folklore - part of a clan with interesting customs and traditions. She's sweet and sexy and fascinating. While Emaline is a bland coded-white self insert. Her only personality trait is horny. It falls neatly into the White Girl Fucks An Exotic BIPoC subgenre of monster romance. Boo :(

Kiran has a pseudopenis, as female hyena do. When Ema first encounters her in hyena form she assumes 'Forest', as she calls Kiran, is male because penis. Alright understandable mistake. Later when she knows it's Kiran, she... calls Kiran's penis 'he' and 'little dude' and switches from 'good girl' to 'good boy' during sex after learning of Kiran's dick. This feels like really weird gender essentialism in a book about girls with dicks. It was a turn off for me.

This whole series is just good. These short novellas deliver exactly what they promise, and then some. This series is advertised as “essentially just smut with a smattering of plotline” and, while entirely accurate, I think sells themselves short. This IS a super spicy story (like, its MOST of the story, set your expectations) but there is also a shockingly sweet love story wrapped around it and some really great scenes between the protagonists; and a little dash of external plotline! Going in I didn’t expect the author to make the romance component so sweeeeeeet and heartwarming, but it was a delightful surprise.

I only recommend this to someone who is looking for *this*, but to those people I would say this whole series is a slam dunk that you wont regret.

Is this worth 5-stars? I don't know. It's short and not nearly as complex as novels I have rated lower, however it delivers exactly what was advertised and the quality-per-page-count is just about perfect. It was exactly as ambitious as a novella of this length should be, which is something a lot of other shorter stories get wrong. I can't think of many ways that this could have been better than it was.

New Favorite

I'm new to erotic fiction in general, and very new to this sort of paranormal or shifter erotica. But this FAR exceeds the few books I've read so far, and convinced me to give the genre another chance. So much fun. Even though I have Kindle Unlimited, I immediately bought this book and the rest in the series when I was finished because I wanted to support the author. Can't wait for more!

I honestly couldn’t make it through the first chapter, I struggled with the 3rd person POV. It felt like I was reading the outline of a script: “She does this. She feels this. She sees this, etc.” It left me unable to connect to the character and anything she was doing/experiencing. I read lots of reviews about how steamy and interesting the series was but steamy scenes from 3rd person POV are not for me, I can’t get into it.

Great book

I loved the MC Ema. She has such a fun personality. I didn't go into this story thinking it would be so well written and sweet. Though the description says there's no plot, it definitely has enough of one to leave you feeling satisfied with the 2 hours spent reading. Gonna add it to my re-read collection.
