THE PLOT

Henry is basically a stay-at-home dad with a love for cooking. His wife, Abi, is the main breadwinner and coming off a great career win. But her celebrations are cut short when someone starts targeting them... and anyone who gets in the way.

MY OPINION

I (almost) feel bad giving this such a low rating given all the positive reviews........ But THIS IS MY TRUTH OKAY!!!??

*Deep breath in* HENRY IS THE MOST ANNOYING, CONDESCENDING, WOE IS ME, WASTEMAN I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED!!!! Whew.... I feel better getting that off my chest. Henry's character is so deeply unlikeable and pitiful, I don't care if he saved the Queen herself from an attempted assassination and cured cancer at the same time. He was constantly snivelling about.... EVERYTHING!!!!!! Oh Abi's so rude to me, oh Abi asked me to cook dinner with only one night's notice, oh wah wah WAAAHHHH STFU PLS!!!

I've mentioned that I usually don't vibe with books authored by men (reason unknown) but I'll still give the book a chance. HOWEVER, I can confidently say I would rather be waterboarded then read another male-only narrated book. If you could even call Henry a male (not very feminist of me, *shrug*). He is the definition of a weenie. Even in his "heroic" moments, I couldn't muster up the respect for his "bravery."

Also... the motive for all that murderous, unhinged, psychopathic behaviour was WEAK. When the motive was revealed.... I wanted to yeet my Kindle across the room. Ain't NO WAY....... And then, as if I couldn't hate Henry any more than I already did, the last page sent me over the top. This "man" is the definition of "ain't shit."

I honestly can't comment on the writing quality because Henry was so out-of-this-world annoying, I couldn't concentrate on anything else. I have nothing good to say about this book. I can see how other, more patient, more understanding, less jaded individuals may enjoy this, but for me it was a hard NO. If I ever hear the name Henry again I might throw hands.

PROS AND CONS
Pros: I finished it
Cons: Henry's existence

Dnf at 43%. I couldn’t finish this book. The main character was an asshole. Also I was listening to the audiobook and it was very repetitive and dragged on and on. Spoiler ahead: also he put bars on the windows to protect the family. Wtf? Then wondered why the wife was mad at him. That was the final straw for me. Also I wasn’t that interested in the story to begin with. So that’s why I could not finish this book.

I honestly DNFed this book about 15% into it because I just couldn’t get into it the way I wanted.

I read the synopsis and was intrigued by the way it sounded so intense, but as I got to reading it, I didn’t feel that way still. And quite frankly, I feel like I am the only one who feels this way because there are some great reviews on this book.

I am not sure if it was the characters or the writing that made it read a little slow and uninteresting to me.

But I will definitely have to come back to it at another time!!

It's been awhile since I've read a good thriller so I was definitely ready and psyched for this book.

We have our main characters Abi and Henry. Henry is Abi's husband and a stay-at-home dad. Abi is the breadwinner for the family and a great lawyer. She just had a great win by convicting two murderers. After this big win, weird things begin to happen. Abi is being followed. Her car gets vandalized. They also get an anonymous "death threat" letter. Abi isn't as worried as she should be, but Henry is. He goes to the police with the information. As time goes on, more events happen, but Henry's reactions are... kind of crazy. He becomes paranoid. He doesn't know who is doing it all, and he has stopped documenting it all and taking it to the police. His behavior becomes..quite manic or sketchy with everything too!

There are some interesting twists in this book. To be 100% honest, Henry is unlikeable... and I do wonder if that was on purpose. If the author wanted him to be .. annoying and difficult to tolerate for the sake of the storyline? Who knows. I got through the book, but at times I wanted to put it down because of him alone ;x

Abi a famous crminal lawyer and today she secure the conviction of two murderers they killed a man horrificly and brutelly. She is coming back home after celebrating with her co-workers when she realises she is being followed by a hooded man and her phone is dead so she can’t contact anyone.

Henry is waiting for his wife. She never did this before. If she has to come late she always informs him. But this time her phone is switched off. And when a threatening letter comes Henry starts thinking about the people involved in the case which Abi is working on.

I received the review copy of this book from the author and I started reading it straight away. The book grabbed my attention from the 1st page and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. There are so many twists in this book and the ending is mind blowing. I can't see it coming. This is my first read of 2022 and its mind blowingly fantastic.
4.5/5 from my side.

I would have given this book a higher score but Henry, the husband is an annoying character that is so over the top paranoid that it takes away from the story. After awhile you just want to slap him and tell him to calm down.

Nothing Left To Lose by A.J. Wills is a highly recommended psychological thriller.

Abi is a criminal lawyer/barrister who just secured the convictions of two murders. Henry and Abi should be celebrating the conclusion of her big case, but Henry is frantic that she isn't home and her phone is off. When Abi finally returns after celebrating with colleagues, and says that someone was following her. Later Henry sees that someone did follow Abi home and now knows where they live. The next day he discovers her car was vandalized, and the couple receives an anonymous letter with a death threat. Henry is worried that these threats are tied to her recent case and the crime family involved will extract revenge on their family. Abi is not as concerned, but ends up talking to the police about the incidents while Henry looks into a home security system.

Henry's concerns escalate and his paranoia increases with each new incident as he tires to figure out exactly who is targeting his family. Make no mistake, someone is out to get them and becoming increasingly threatening and bold in their contact and threats. Henry really has no idea who is behind this so his mind is skittering from one suspect to another. Henry's reactions are manic at times and almost over-the-top, which detracts from the seriousness, especially when he is not taking all the contact and threats he receives to the police. Document, document, document...

Nothing Left To Lose will hold your attention to the end as the threats increase. Basically, all of the characters are unlikable so the strength to the narrative is in piecing together if the threats are real and who could be responsible for them. New suspects emerge as the information Henry thinks he has changes throughout the plot. The final denouement is very satisfying, but I'm going to have to admit I almost set this novel aside based on the sheer exasperation and irritation I felt toward the character of Henry.

A thrilling page-turner filled with suspense!

This book grabbed my attention from the first chapter and held it until the very last page. The whole story is like a puzzle and I felt like I went on a quest with the main character Henry trying to find all the pieces to join them together. With twists and turns throughout and some very untrustworthy characters I had many theories, but most of mine were incorrect! As certain things were revealed in the story there were a lot of jaw-dropping moments where I not only felt shocked, but where I realised that the clues had actually been there, I had just missed them!

Henry is extremely worried when his wife doesn’t return home from work, especially when he is unable to contact her.

Abi is late heading home from work after enjoying some celebratory drinks. Her phone is dead, and she is pretty sure she is being followed.

This is just the beginning of what is about to be a very worrying time for this couple and when a threatening letter arrives, Henry wonders if it is linked to the trial that Abi has been working on, which has just seen two notorious troublemakers put away for murder.

Henry is the kind of guy who just plods along in life, happy looking after his two children and working part-time while Abi is the breadwinner. Being a great cook, he could probably do more with his life, but I get the impression he is a Mr Play it Safe and doesn’t like to take risks. He also doesn’t tend to say boo to a goose and when things or people irritate him, he keeps his thoughts to himself. It is great to watch Henry change and develop throughout the story though when he begins to feel threatened and he realises that he has to man up to protect his family. I wanted to scream at him through the pages at times when he did stupid things but that all added to the suspense in the story which at times was palpable!

I have to say I didn’t trust any of the characters apart from Henry and his two daughters. Being suspicious of so many people had my mind working overtime, which is exactly what you want from a psychological thriller!

I can’t finish my review without commenting on the fantastic, action-packed ending. Shocking, gripping and nail-biting is how I would describe it! Having read some of Adrian’s other books, I feel like an explosive showdown at the end is definitely his thing. He certainly knows how to finish a book in style!

Many thanks to the author A J Wills for providing me with a copy of this brilliant book in exchange for an open and honest review!

Another great book that I have read this year, I have to say so far 2022 has been a treat providing some excellent reads that have not disappointed.

When you’ve lost everything – revenge is all that’s left and oh how true this can be. After securing the convictions of two violent murderers for a horrific and brutal attack on a pensioner in his own home, Henry’s wife, Abi should be celebrating. With the nation watching, it was her biggest test as a criminal lawyer.
But someone’s not happy.

This is an exceptionally good book and again another I read in a few hours. If done well, the revenge theme can be brilliant and the author did not disappoint me in this book. When Abi does not arrive home from work Henry is very worried. Abi is leaving after having celebration drinks and is sure someone is following here. she is feeling very vulnerable as her phone has died and she is not sure if is her imagination or she really is in danger. From here the action increases dramatically.

The characters are well developed in the story and we really see Henry grow as the book moves on, they are very believable and you can feel yourself relating to them. A really great read that I am sure many will enjoy. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

First, there’s the hooded stranger who follows her home in the dead of night.

Someone’s trying to scare them.

This is a brilliant read. I could not put it down!!
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

Gripping thriller that sucks you into the story from the very first chapter.

I found the main character Henry slightly annoying from time to time, but hey, man was just trying to solve the mystery of all the creepy stuff that was happening around him, I guess 🤷 anyway, loved the plot twists and how the tension rised till the end!

This book took me on one wild ride! The characters were very well developed and held my attention the entire time. A definite page-turner that will keep you up at night reading to find out who wants revenge on Abi and Henry. I enjoyed each and every crazy moment that was thrown at them. There is a bit of a backstory that isn’t mentioned in the synopsis that Wills threw in there and I don’t want to say too much to give anything away. You will just have to read to find out…
A must read for thriller lovers!!

I read Nothing Left to Lose by A.J. Wills in a day and a half. I couldn't put the book down (only to sleep!) I kept waiting for the next shoe to drop and guessing who could be behind the threats. The writing was done well, and there were no long descriptions or extraneous information to distract me from the action or take me out of the story.

There were times when it was frustrating that Abi discounted the threats, and Henry kept saying he was "100% certain" this person or that person was the culprit. But overall, Nothing Left to Lose was a good story, believable plot, and sit on the edge of your seat action.

The ending was also very good, and I would recommend this book.

This has been a book that has pulled me in from the very first page, held me hostage and kept me on the edge of my seat right up to the last words.

I adore A.J Wills books but this is quite possibly my new favourite. We are introduced to Abi and Henry. Abi is a successful lawyer, who we see dealing with a very high profile case of some colourful individuals- this is only the start.

We are given a lot of information at the beginning of this one. Abi has won her case but is missing, I have been hooked immediately. When she does return home, she admits that she was followed. This is the beginning of the rollercoaster we are taken on.

Overall, I have really liked the characters in this book. They are realistic and normal individuals. However, I have found myself suspicious of some of them and unable to work out if they were responsible for some of the events which take place.

This is a rollercoaster, I’ve felt my heart pound at parts of this book. I have devoured page after page in just one sitting. This is a book I have been completely unwilling and unable to put down.

There is nothing about this book that I dislike. It is a brilliant read. Wills writes in a way you feel as though you are watching the events play out in front of you. It’s been so easy to ignore reality and become lost in the pages of this one.

This is an absolute must read. I have no doubt I’ll be recommending this book to everyone.

I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. This is one more rollercoaster ride that I devoured in one sitting. Once I picked it up it was impossible to put down. It is intense, suspenseful, infuriating, frustrating, heart-pounding and any other descriptive term one could come up with. And the ending? Oh, wow! I didn't expect that AT ALL!!
This book definitely plays into the fears we all have on some level that with the popularity of social media and the internet in general we are going to find ourselves with a stalker; either because of something we've said or done or just because. The terror and frustration of Henry and Abbi are palpable on each page. There were times I wanted to strangle Henry for his overreactions, but at the same time, I could understand where he was coming from.
Mr. Willis has created a mind-gripping story of one man's fight to protect his wife and daughters that resounds with anyone who has a family they love. I highly recommend this book.

Get comfortable, once you pick up this book you won’t be putting it down!
Nothing Left to Lose is one of those rare stories that defies being pigeonholed in a set genre. On one hand it is a fabulous thriller, on the other hand it reads like an awesome psychological thriller. A. J. Wills has crafted a story that set its hooks into me from the very start and was impossible to put down, it’s been a while since I just sat and read a story without getting up for anything – glad I had a large cup of water on hand. There was enough misdirection built into this story that each time I figured I knew who was doing the stalking/threatening I soon found out I had no clue. Personally, I love stories like this. I received an advance reader copy from the author and chose to provide this review.

Thank you to Cherry Tree Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Nothing Left to Lose by A.J. Wills is a gripping domestic thriller that will leave you guessing until the end. The story revolves around Abi, who works as a criminal lawyer, and her husband Henry. Abi has just secured the convictions of two violent murderers, and everything should be fine and dandy. Instead, someone is following her home at night. Their car is being vandalized, and they're getting death threats in the mail. Who is trying to scare the couple? And will the stalker end up carrying out these threats?

Here is a chilling excerpt from the Prologue, which is, like the rest of the book, from Henry's point of view:

"Where the hell is she?
It’s gone half nine and a niggle of worry rumbles in my gut. A vision of Abi on a hospital trolley flashes through my mind. I shove it away. I’m being silly. Worrying unnecessarily. I’m sure she’s fine.
I snatch up my phone and hit the redial button, willing her to answer, hoping for a slurred apology and the sound of music thumping in the background. At least I would know she was safe.
I listen to a long hiss-filled silence, the blood gushing through my ears.
A click.
Her voice.
And for a split second, I dare to believe I’m through."

Overall, Nothing Left to Lose is a twist-filled domestic thriller that I could not put down. One highlight of this book was the perspective of the main character, Henry. I feel like a lot of domestic thrillers are told from the first-person point of view of the wife, and based on the description, I was expecting this one to be the same. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that this story is told from Henry's point of view. While Abi is out working as a lawyer, Henry takes care of the home and their young daughters. What an innovative reversal of gender roles! If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of domestic thrillers in general, I recommend that you check out this book, which is available now!

Great storyline. Definitely keeps you engaged till the end

I definitely loved the storyline of the book. There were breadcrumbs that were expertly left throughout the book which made you keep reading. It is a read that you do not want to put down and even when you figure out the cause, the author still had a great story to round it out and bring all the pieces together.

The only reason I did not give the book 5 stars was because I could not stand the main character. I know there are less gender rolls and a modern approach to how the family operates. But the husband was a little b*** in my opinion. Overly dramatic and paranoid. It honestly reminded me of how a woman would respond to a situation and that is not to say there are not strong level headed women. But his reaction to everything was very feminine to the point I thought the author was a women. His depiction of other men was annoying too. We have the feeble main character who was always reaching. And every other male was pictured as muscular brutes who were self absorbed pigs. There was no balance and as a woman I wasn’t sure what the author was trying to say there. A powerful woman and a weak husband struggling to protect his family.

All in all the overall story kept me interested and I enjoyed each of the plot twists.

You'll Never Guess Who

This is my first book by the author A J Wills, but it certainly won't be my last. He had me on the edge of my seat. The paranoia of the main character leads the reader on a large side to side amusement park swing of emotions. Starting off slowly like a pendulum until the motion of the ride crests so far up your stomach drops and just when you settle down you're throw up into the air again.
What I found unique about the storyline told by this author was that unlike most psychological thrillers I've read, the protagonist was male. It changed the whole nature of the story. Determined to defend his family out of some mistaken sense of machismo, he jumps to conclusions and confrontations. When he's proven wrong he takes in another direction but this time he's right.
His leaps of logic are baffling and yet what other conclusion could be drawn from the evidence he has in front of him. The secrecy of others feeds his paranoia. But he can't allow anything or anybody to hurt his family especially his two little girls. The author was very clever in how he built the suspense, allowed you to take a couple breaths then he was back at it, driving you and the main character crazy. What could possibly happen next? You'll never guess.

OMG you guys….this book has me hooked from the very first page. You know when you open a book and are immediately immersed in the story?? Well this book was that kind of book!
The characters are totally relatable and I really felt for Abi and all of the drama that follows her around.
The plot line is spot on with each chapter enticing you to read one more chapter, one more chapter and so on.
The author has an easy writing style and the short chapters are great for squeezing in a cheeky read in tea breaks at work.
Excellent book and I totally recommend for lovers of thrillers.

*************************************************************************************************************************************************************

"When you’ve lost everything – revenge is all that’s left…" This....so true. What a way to draw a true thriller junkie in to read a novel. I am a lover of all things true crime, and thriller, so I was intrigued with this book by reading the description. It sounded intense, and the intensity of a thriller novel is what makes me love them. The twists and turns and the need to keep reading more to find out what happens. However, this is not that novel. I wanted to love this book, but it just didn't do it for me. In started this book thinking I would devour it in one or two sittings, but it took me weeks, and that is just not like me. It started okay, but it dragged out more than necessary. And oh my goodness, Henry, the husband and main character drove me absolutely insane, his character is unlikable and just whiney about EVERYTHING, which got on my nerves and made me want to stop reading numerous times. I know he had a lot going on, and trying to protect his family, but lets not be so whiney and complain so much. Seemed like Abi, his wife was more calm and with it during everything than he was, which is strange. I kept reading, because I do not like to DNF a book, so I pushed through thinking that when the motive for all the murder and devious and psychopathic behavior was so not expected, and I don't say that as a good thing. It was so boring, like wow. When it was revealed why the family was under fire, I put my tablet down and had to take a break from this book, even being so close to the end.

I'm not saying the book was bad, it could be a great 5 star read for someone else, but it just didn't do it for me. The writing style was good, just the "big reveal" was not there and there could have been a better motive and more twists which would have hooked me.

I love when a book just comes into your life unexpectedly that you really enjoy. You guys may remember me gushing about The War in the Dark by Nick Setchfield last year. This is another that seemingly fell from heaven, sure I got a copy for an honest review but let's face it,that's easy to with a book this good. There were times when I really wanted to smack Abi and Henry was a bit whiny at the beginning, but then I realized that they were just being true to life. This story kept my pulse revving every time I picked it up. I am very glad this popped up on my radar great job @ajwills_author . I will most definitely be picking up more of your thrillers in the months and years ahead. Thank you very much for my gifted copy!

Criminal lawyer Abi and her husband Henry should be celebrating her win against two truly evil and twisted murderers. Instead Henry is worried that someone on the outside wants revenge for those prosecuted, especially with the convicted being a part of a know crime family. Abi brushes it off as her husband being paranoid but soon she cannot ignore the increasing threats to her family.

This book kept me guessing until the very end. Every time I thought I had an idea of who was coming after family, something new would happen that made me realize I had no idea!

Although some of Henry's reactions seem a little over the top at times, it makes you think that these types of things can happen in real life and you never know how you would react if it was you.

I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great psychological thriller that you'll want to read in one sitting.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Abi is a criminal attorney and wins her first big case convicting two violent murders. She goes out to celebrate and decides to walk home. She fears she is being followed home. She immediately tells her husband, he looks out the window and sees someone watching the house. Next day Henry goes to pick up the car for Abi and notices that someone has vandalized the car.

Things start to quickly spiral out of control .Henry wants to figure out who is doing this and make it stop. You get easily engrossed in the writing style and get wrapped up in all the events taking place and don't want to put the book down. You think you know what is going to happen but you get thrown a curve ball and it has you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next.

A great read! Thank you Net Galley for my copy and this is my honest review.

Talk about twist after twist, this book left me guessing right up until the very end!
Nothing Left To Lose centres around Henry; a planner at the local council, novice chef/food critic, full time carer to the kids and his wife Abi a hot shot lawyer who has just put 2 of the biggest local criminals behind bars. Within hours of the case closing disturbing things start to occur around the Hutton-Pilkington household, but could it be related to the case or is it just one big coincidence?

Honestly, this book had me absolutely hooked from the get-go, and although Henry is what I can only describe as a bit of a 'wet lettuce' who left you wanting to scream through the pages, for me this is absolutely what made the story what it is. With short chapters (which I love), well developed characters, multiple twists and a super suspenseful ending - I would definitely recommend giving this a read!

Huge thank you to the author for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Abi, a criminal lawyer, has just had a successful conviction. Two murderers were convicted of murdering a pensioner, and Abi is celebrating. Henry, her husband, is at home waiting for her. When she does finally return, she tells Henry that she thinks she was followed. Not everyone seems happy about the court verdict, and soon, Henry gets a letter that terrifies him as it promises that his family will pay. Henry has written a very demeaning blog about a new restaurant in town, and he thinks that the threatening letter has to do with that. Henry wants to protect his family and has security measures installed, some quite extreme.
This thriller was well written and a fast read.
I thank the author, publisher and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Yet another fabulous thriller by AJ Wills! Abi has just closed a huge criminal case and disturbing things begin to happen to her and her family. This book dragged me in from the very first chapter. Superbly written, with a fast paced delivery, I felt as though I was watching the events unfold in front of my eyes. With so many fabulous, fleshed out characters and twists and turns along the way, the possibilities were endless and completely unpredictable. AJ manages to thread all the seemingly insignificant details camouflaged along the way into a neat, seamless, and utterly satisfying ending.
