Red Jumbo is a novel about sexism, racism, pneumatic tubes, falling in love, nightlights, loneliness, Christmas all year, immigration policy, Bubbles of Vergèze, rebelliousness, and community. And it’s an exuberant, funny book: there’s even a car chase--with slow cars--for a couple of blocks.
It's the tale of a lost and lonely man who meets a wild and eccentric group of people and forms an unlikely bond with them, all while trying to keep a step ahead of a corrupt, wealthy couple. It's a faux Raymond Chandler yarn shaken up with magical realism.
Chris Coulson is the rowdy writer of Nothing Normal in Cork, The Midwest Hotel, Go With the Floe, A Bottomless Cup of Midnight Oil, and his new novel, Red Jumbo. He's been writing his way out of trouble since kindergarten.
"Red Jumbo" is a wildly wonderful book! It’s a tale of a private-eye on his first case, only nothing is as it seems and this isn’t a normal detective story. Coulson doesn’t shy from real pain and tough issues, but he also isn’t afraid to be silly and corny. The mix of characters and community created here are ones you’re happy to follow and I only wish I could join them at the end. What an unabashedly optimistic delight!
