Jane Addams starts a settlement house in Chicago after desiring to be friends with the poor people and give them opportunities to learn and grow. Themes include multicultural, poverty, being kind.
"without friends we are alone, but when we have friends we can do more. we can learn about new ideas. we can share what we have. we can grow while we're doing it. It is important both to be a friend and to receive friendship."
This series of books are, on the whole, horrible. They glorify the greatest bane of the 20th century-altruism. The stories are slanted and misleading. Yuck!
Jane Addams was who I wanted to be when I was in grammar school and first read this series. Someone who saw needs and filled them. Someone who did good to others. Someone who was patient and kind and willing to follow their own inner voice despite opposition from others. As I read these books to my children, I am inspired even more! Highly recommended. If you can find the series and can buy it, I'd highly recommend it.
