Gideon Hawk follows one rule – justice.

Hawk's been asked to find a merciless gang leader called Knife-Hand. One of his hands has been replaced with a Mojave axe. But Hawk has something mightier in his artillery – a personal vendetta.

“Nobody writes this sort of hard-edged Western better than Peter Brandvold himself. Gideon Hawk is one of my favorite characters, and this novel is a fine addition to the Rogue Lawman series.” – James Reasoner

Peter Brandvold – Rogue Lawman Bk 5 – Border Snakes – Reviewed 3/13/22 – Read 3/12/22

Hawk is surprised by an old friend who asks Hawk to kill a ruthless outlaw called Knife-hand.

After tracking down and dispatching Laramie Blaxton and his gang of men, Hawk spent the night, and early the following day, he was surprised with a visit from his mentor and old friend, Gavin Spurlock. What surprised him even more, was the reason for the visit. Spurlock explained that one bandito named Wilbur ‘Knife-hand’ Monjosa was killing and robbing in southern Arizona Territory and further south. The governors of the four states, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado held a meeting and brought up Hawk’s name as probably the only man around that could find and kill this outlaw. They came to Spurlock because this same outlaw had gutted his only son and knew Gavin wanted the outlaw dead. They also knew that he would not even listen to them if anyone else had approached Hawk, but he would his old friend. Gavin offered the job to Hawk, and even though he could understand the loss, it saddened him that he had lost something in the mix, his integrity. Now the story begins.

Join Hawk as he tracks down the killer ‘Knife-hand’ in his own way…

What did I like? This book was a little different from the other books in this series, more emotional mixed in with his hunt. Hawk lives every day with the loss of his son and wife; now he is burdened with the loss of his friend’s son, the pain hurts him.

What will you like? Hawk is a man to be reckoned with, and because he does not care whether he lives or dies, he goes after his prey with a vengeance that other trackers and bounty hunters would not. The action is brutal, and the hunted are killers, but Hawk knows his business and gets his men. In his mind, his reasons are justified; these men are killers and robbers, they need to be stopped. easy reading

But had a few holes in the logic of the story, which distracted from the quality of the writing. Still recommend

Maybe the best in the series so far. Certainly one of the best. Brandvold is in full command of language and story here.
