FATIZEN The Graphic Novel Part Three: Their Mortal Rind

Rate this book
Seventy years in the future, the diet industry remains the most powerful branch of the federal government. The rights of fat citizens have been eliminated, and the rebellion has begun.

FATIZEN: The Graphic Novel, Part Three is an adaptation of the 2015 prose novel Fatizen 24602 by author Philip Barragan, published by Branch Hill Publications. The story is beautifully illustrated, inked and colored by artist Mason Arrigo.

FATIZEN is an exploration into the systematic dehumanization of people. Whether it be our nationality, sexual orientation, color of our skin, or the size of our bodies, societies have leveraged attacks on their fellow citizens throughout civilization. The "othering" of our fellow humans has led to some of our darkest periods in history, and continues today.

Could you maintain a low Body Mass Index if it was law? What if your life depended on it?

Since finishing Part 2, I couldn’t wait to find out where the Fatizen story arc would go next and how it would all end – so much so that as soon as Part 3 arrived, I dropped everything else and dived straight into it! My one slight regret is that I devoured it cover to cover in record time as I couldn’t put it down!

Picking up where Part 2 left off, Fatizen Part 3 is relentless from the outset. We’re immediately thrown into the fat underground’s campaign against the OSC, whose reign of terror now seems all but unstoppable. The sense of urgency and menace doesn’t let up as a lethal game of cat and mouse hurtles towards all-out war. And even until the last pages, the reader is left reeling from the horrors the OSC are capable of…

While keeping you on the edge of your seat with intrigue and action is something Fatizen Part 3 does effortlessly, the real power of this series is the way that Barragan is able to intertwine exploring complex themes of morality, sacrifice, family, authenticity to ourselves and persecution with tender emotion from his beautifully realised characters.

Brought to life with Arrigo’s trademark prominent style, Fatizen Part 3 makes for a story that is both thought-provoking and visually exciting. I’ve loved this story from the very beginning, and what a way Part 3 is to end the series! Brilliant!
