Female Ajin are prohibited from serving in the palace, and so Rangetsu’s revenge depends on her ability to maintain her ruse. But when the attendant Taihaku discovers the truth and Third Prince Kougai’s suspicious are roused, will Rangetsu lose her place by Prince Tenyou’s side as well as her chance at vengeance?
Rei Tōma (Japanese: 藤間 麗,Tōma Rei) has been drawing since childhood, but she only began drawing manga because of her graduation project in design school. When she drew a short-story manga, "Help me dentist" (ヘルプ me デンティスト), it attracted a publisher's attention and she made her debut right away. Her magnificent art style became popular, and after she debuted as a manga artist, she became known as an illustrator for novels and video game character designs.
Dawn of the Arcana is her first long-running manga series, and it has been a hit in Japan, selling over a million copies.
This was so cute whilst also still building the plot really well! I love these characters a lot and the art is just gorgeous! I can’t wait to see how the revelations in this vol effect the story !!
Rangetsu’s deception is standing on increasingly slippery ground, as both Kougai and Taihaku suspect something isn’t quite right with Tenyou’s “male” bodyguard. But when revenge and desire are no longer one and the same, the price for either may be too high to accept…
Oof. Poor Rangetsu goes through the emotional wringer this volume (it does feel like they could write that on the back of every book) and we see that for all her skill and her drive to survive until her vengeance has been extracted, when stripped of that she has precious little left to protect herself with.
Obviously the main conflict here revolves around Rangetsu’s growing feelings for Tenyou, which she is finding increasingly difficult to turn a blind eye to. Most of this is an internal struggle, but the art does a wonderful job portraying the signs that her face simply cannot keep from betraying (and one brilliant visual where her affection is expressed in the most amusingly beast-person way possible).
There’s certainly something to be explored here about what you owe to the dead and Rangetsu has had nothing except that debt to her brother for so long that she is more than willing to die for it. Or at least was. Her desire to reaffirm this is continually undercut by her heart, which proves to be working far better than her initially aloof demeanour would have suggested.
Of course, nothing in this series is ever easy and the mangaka wisely uses humour sparingly enough that it keeps it from being too oppressive, but also reminds us that our heroes can never afford to let their guard down.
The way Rangetsu’s troubles play out is the perfect example of what this series does well, which is compound problems and offer solutions that often only blunt the danger rather than remove it completely. There are very rarely any clean wins in this story.
Rangetsu gains an ally, only for the relief of having somebody who openly knows her secret to cause her to, in turn, cause Tenyou distress. An errant meeting with Kougai winds up putting him on her scent. She reveals her secret in a half-lie that lets her partially come clean to Tenyou, but doesn’t let her admit what she truly is, and puts her in the crosshairs of another royal. And that whole Tenyou situation is about as resolved as an ominous gurgle from a volcano - in other words, it will explode and be messy, it’s simply a matter of time.
In other words, it’s great. This series takes a forbidden love narrative and runs wild with it, properly explaining why it’s forbidden and making the obstacles obvious and sensical within the world being built. It fits perfectly amongst this nest of vipers and is wrapped up deliciously in the equally delightful intrigues and politics.
This is really Taihaku’s time to shine and he has a lot of excellent work this volume, including some searing conversations with Rangetsu, realistic but not deliberately unkind, and a clever revelation of just why he would ever help her in the first place. That was an excellent bit of backstory. He’s always been a good character, so seeing him get a bit extra was nice.
I genuinely don’t think there’s a thing wrong with this manga. It delights every time a new volume comes out and it has one of the best, twistiest narratives of any romance I’m reading. I constantly hope this all turns out, and it probably will, but when you get caught up between these pages it can be difficult to figure out exactly how it’ll ever be possible.
5 stars - a continued favourite maintains its excellent pedigree for yet another volume.
Rangetsu is caught between a rock and hard place. That’s the understatement of the century, as she attempts to balance her secrets and figure out who she can and cannot trust in this palace of vipers. How long will she be able to keep the truth, the Whole Truth, from coming to the surface as suspicions grow all around her?
Volume 5 was a fantastic read, and it reminded me of why I was initially interested in this series. While this is still unmistakably a romantic story, the perilous world these characters inhabit makes it a complete page-turner. In this world, love is a dangerous wish, and Rangetsu wrestles with her feelings for Prince Tenyou. Is this mere respect that she feels for him or is it love?
We see Rangetsu steel herself in this volume and make plans for figuring out who murdered her brother. It’s refreshing to see her focusing more on her mission to avenge her brother and forming somewhat of an alliance with a fellow servant, Taihaku. Big truths are revealed between them in an emotional and expertly drawn scene. Perhaps one of the best scenes in the whole series. I’m pleased to see Rangetsu forming relationships beyond the one she has with Prince Tenyou, as it gives the reader more insight into her emotional state and gives her more agency.
My only gripe with this volume is that they are setting up a plot line involving Prince Kougai. He is suspicious of Rangetsu and gets handsy with her before being interrupted by Tenyou. Given all the foreshadowing, I’m pretty confident that Kougai is going to get more physical in his advances toward Rangetsu at some point in this story. While it makes sense for such a loathsome character and is completely in line with the world-building, I’m still nervous about how the writing and art will depict such a scene.

I don't think I can wait patiently until the next volume comes out! If I thought the other volumes were stunning, volume 5 of The King's Beast blows them out of the water.
The Characters Volume 5 brought a ton of character development. We are starting to see Rangetsu's internal struggles to avoid falling for Prince Tenyou and get her revenge for her murdered brother. On top of that still kept her disguise as a boy. She faces many challenges in this volume, and she continues to grow and learn.
We also see some character development with Taihaku, Prince Tenyou's attendant. He comes off as uncaring and continuously puts Rangetsu in her place. However, he also comes from a place of protection and understanding. Especially the knowledge of loving Prince Tenyou. He cares for Rangetsu in his way, and we see this quite a bit in volume 5.
The Art I have nothing but praise for Rei Toma's artwork. Every page is art on its own. Her style is stunning and by far my favorite. She shows emotion, love, feelings through her characters rather than speech bubbles.
She focuses on her character's emotions and the small things. She has built a world through art, and it's just absolutely stunning.
The Plot Just as Toma's art flows, she knows how to write a stunning plot. So many things happened in this volume that left me blown away. We are given insight into Sogetsu's murder, we are hinted into the betrayal of another prince, we are seeing the feelings changing between Tenyou and Rangetsu, we are seeing the potential identities of individuals.
So many beautiful things are happening! The plot is moving so wonderfully, leaving me wanting more. I have never been more excited and impatient for the next volume to come out in English. I can't wait to see what happens next.
The tension and suspense of this book was so gripping. I can sense that the series is gonna start picking up, and I’m very excited to see where it goes.

¸.·✩·.¸¸.·¯⍣✩ 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙺𝚒𝚗𝚐'𝚜 𝙱𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚝 ✩⍣¯·.¸¸.·✩·.¸ Tenyou's growing feelings for Rangetsu are both dangerous and confusing. Tenyou works on creating Rangetsu a new set of clothes and the designer creates something that dresses Rangetsu's inner warrior. Taihaku discovers Rangetsu's secret and works towards keeping her true gender a secret. Together, the two form a fun friendship dynamic, and Rangetsu's burden is lifted a little by having a new friend in the palace. Third, Prince Kougai senses something between Tenyou and Rangetsu and instantly becomes intrigued. As his growing suspicions creep closer to the truth, Rangetsu's secret might be known to few.
"Respect. . . and love how are they different?" -Rangetsu The King's Beast could become one of my favorite series of all time. Reading this is like reading the best dream ever. It has everything I love; a crown prince, a female warrior, a girl pretending to be a boy, political intrigue, and a revenge arc. I never thought I'd find something that had everything-until I found out that it existed.
"You may have realized how you feel . . . but this is a first for you. . . isn't it? He's your first love." -Taihaku
This volume was emotional and I absolutely loved it. Taihaku and Rangetsu's relationship is one I love! They had a brother-sister sort of dynamic. Taihaku always looked out for her and protected her and Rangetsu went to him when she needed someone to talk to. Watching Tenyou have major panic as he tries to understand his feelings for Rangetsu was hilarious. When Tenyou confides in his brother, and Taihaku tries to understand-those scenes were gold.
"Back then . . . only I saw. . . your hatred, and that look in your eyes. If I had helped you up then . . . maybe right now you wouldn't be here with that look in your eyes. Of course I had a bad feelings its to be expected. This is my karma." -Taihaku
Within a fantasy with a historical vibe, there is a commentary about sexism, classism, and the divide between two different races that can be suppressed. Ajin are treated as servants and inferior to humans. Rangetsu struggles with a system that is not meant to benefit her. As she falls slowly in love with Tenyou, its breath-taking to watch her find love. Rangetsu is a very complex character who starts off with revenge in mind. Slowly she grows and matures, widening her scope to help Ajin more. Rangetsu is a strong, caring, hard-working, and compassionate protagonist who is determined to achieve her goals.
"A lie that put me in constant danger . . . apparently its been a lot more terrifying than I realized. The fear has been suffocating. Like I've been submerged in dark waters. I was so lonely. . . but then I could finally see the surface glistening. . . so brightly. Yet I couldn't breathe. It was always so hard. And now . . . finally." -Rangetsu
The characters are one of my favorite parts of the story. Rei Toma's art style is gorgeous. I love how much detail she puts into clothes, scenery, and the characters. Everyone in the story is gorgeous. . . and has such unique character designs. I hate it when the crown prince is stuck-up, brooding, and pretentious. However, Tenyou is kind-hearted, caring, and thoughtful. I love how Tenyou would do anything to help Rangetsu, but he would also show that kindness to others, not specifically just to her.
"Being alone was so painful . . . that I learned of Prince Tenyou's kindness. I was blinded by his light. Before I lean on him too much. . . and my resolve begins to weaken. Before I become a burden to him. I want to disappear." -Rangetsu
This manga volume focuses on internal struggles rather than external. I loved learning more about each character and their internal struggles. Taihaku is rational and clever. I enjoyed seeing his character develop along with his back-story. The conflict in the story is kept consistent throughout the whole manga series so far, which I appreciate. Sub-plots are weaved perfectly with the main plot, and small side conflicts are never fully solved without consequences.
If possible. . . I want to . .. be the one that makes you smile." -Tenyou
I love this series so much. DEFINTELY a manga to pick up for any readers! ☑️PLOT ☑️PLOT TWISTS ☑️CHARACTERS
Holy moly omg. First of all i’m in LOVE with this god damn Cover its soo pretty i absolutely love it so much and OMG i can’t with this Volume uff i LOVE Prince Tenyo more and more like gosh such a cutie pie with such a soft heart and also Rangetsu she is soo adorable and it hurts to see how much she is suffering from everything. I’m really glad Taihaku is willing to help her and feels sorry for her. Prinz Kogai i seriously hope he will go to HELL! I just saw the Preview for the new Volume and omg i swear if he touch her the wrong way he not only has to fight Tenyo no he will have to fight me, do not touch her omg. Such a disgusting piece of shit i really hope nothing bad will happen to Rangetsu and i’m really curious when Prinz Tenyo will find out that she is a Girl. I just wish nothing else than a happy end for Rangetsu i don’t care if here happy ending will be Prinz Tenyo i just wish she will becom happy and all of this pain the Ajins are feeling will come to an end. I can’t wait for the 6th Volume to come out in March 😍
I just want to start out by saying this book killed me. The cause of death, you ask? SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT. YES, THAT IS WHAT IT IS!
In the first place, how the hell is Rangetsu successfully hiding the fact that’s she’s female when she can’t help making all those facial expressions?? Prince Tenyou is going to find out at this rate! Anyway, who else loves Taihaku? He’s the only non-idiot who discovered Rangetsu’s gender, and he reveals his knowledge of it to her in this book. She contemplates killing him to keep her secret (like hell she would actually do that) but he reassures her that he is the only one that knows and he won’t tell anyone. He also tells hers to control her facial expressions… HAHAHA. Anyway, she grows a sense of trust and attachment to Taihaku, which was too hilarious to be honest. Prince Tenyou notices that she is always following Taihaku around and feels left out. Talk about jealousy, am I right? The only this is: Prince Tenyou is a blockhead who is and will continue to be unaware of his feelings. This is the perfect time for Prince Kougai to develop an interest in Rangestu (which he does) because what we need is more jealousy from Prince Tenyou! Says the one who ships Rangestu with literally everyone, but I can’t help rooting for the actual male lead a little bit more??? Ahem… anyway, it was hilarious that she caught Prince Kougai’s interest because of her (again) flushed facial expressions at the cause of Prince Tenyou. I need to learn how to blush if it’s going to make every single hot dude fall in love with me. SIGH.
What else what else… OH YEAH. MORE SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT I GOT FROM HER WAGGING TAIL SPECIFICALLY! I mean, thank god Prince Tenyou didn’t see that. What other way to tell a guy you like him than to unknowingly wag your tail in his presence! Good thing Taihaku came to the rescue and snapped Rangestu out of her stupor. Is it a good thing? But anyway, I think this was the scene where he told her he knows she’s a girl and Sougetsu’s older sister. He tells her how Sougestu died to remind her of the purpose she came to the palace in the first place. She becomes determined to find Sougestu’s murderer and leave the palace before her feelings for Prince Tenyou get out of control. Poor Taihaku though, I can tell he’s developing a crush on her and he’s oh so very sweet. And Prince Kougai is hot. I NEED TO SHUT UP.
I was dying at the long-ass speech bubbles when Prince Tenyou was getting agonized over Prince Kougai’s interest in Rangestu. It’s even said (indicated by the author) to please skim this part! HAHAHAHAHA!
And the end of the book, where Prince Tenyou confesses his undying lov—I mean jealousy, to Rangestu! It was SO FUNNY. And to think he’s not aware of his feelings yet… but his blush afterwards gives me hope than he might realize them soon. And of course Rangestu was beyond elated that he was feeling possessive of her. But everyone, let’s remind ourselves that Prince Tenyou STILL thinks Rangestu is a guy. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t realized his feelings yet… ugh, can someone tell him already? I feel bad about how oblivious he is to everything important going on, and the only thing he’s actually aware of is the fact that he’s kept oblivious! He doesn’t mind because he thinks Taihaku and Rangestu would consult him if it were something he needs to know. Well, it IS something important, but not something he can or is allowed to know.
And I will go cry now and proceed to read the next book.
Edit: OMG AND ONE MORE THING I FORGOT TO MENTION! THE PRINCESS HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH SOUGETSU’S DEATH? IF SO I’M GOING TO KILL THAT DAMN BITC—

I think “The King’s Beast” might be the first manga by Toma Rei that I’ve really thoroughly enjoyed and gotten into the characters. (I never got more than a couple volumes into “Dawn of the Arcana” or “The Water Dragon’s Bride”. So it’s interesting to me that this third series caught my attention when the others didn’t. I may have to go back and try the others again, trying to get a few more volumes into those series.)
I first took a peek at volume seven and from the little I read of that I assumed this was a BL series. So it was an interesting surprise to pick up volume one and find out that Rangetsu is a woman pretending to be a man.
I also really appreciate Taihaku’s knowledge of Rangetsu’s secret and his perspective being included from very early on; if the readers only had access to the perspectives of Prince Tenyou and Rangetsu, the plot would feel a little less interesting, I think. It’s nice to have a third perspective that is not actively undermining or defying the main character - unlike, for example, the characters Asagi in Basara, or the chancellor (?) character in “Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts”. (Actually, come to think of it, maybe I’m enjoying this series for some of the similarities it shares with Basara.)
Seeing their relationship turn to friendship in this volume was a satisfying development I hadn’t fully expected.
I also appreciate some of Prince Tenyou’s thoughts - in this volume especially we see he’s not dumb; he knows Rangetsu and Taihaku are hiding something from him, but he also wants to trust them both and believe that there must be a reason for them to do so.
SCREAMING! This installment has to be my favorite of the series so far. Tenyou is finally starting to suspect things are not as they seem and it’s become very clear that the prince was not aware of Tangetsu’s secret. I was initially thinking that maybe he knew but since we got some of his thoughts this time, it was clarified.
Spoilers:
I love that she has someone who knows and isn’t blackmailing her. Her sob when he tells her BROKE me. And MAYBE we have some feelings developing from Tenyou that will come out in the next volume?? That ending may make me more hopeful than I should be this early in but I’m ready for it. I also love that Tenyou is having these feelings whether he knows her secret or not. I feel like it would’ve been shady if he only had romantic feelings for her after her found out instead of before (I won’t start a lecture on how gender binaries are stupid but they are so this makes me happy). So happy with where this series is going so far!
Tenyou continues to dote on Rangetsu as he slowly comes to terms with his own feelings and tries to express them to the Ajin. Rangetsu herself continues to struggle with her own emotions and may be giving away more than a few unintentional tells about her secret along the way. Taihaku is an odd sort of help in some ways now that Rangetsu is aware he knows and is keeping her secret, but is also incredibly awkward in how he intervenes at times. He certainly didn't think he'd become a sort of touch stone for Rangetsu once she had someone she could lean on who she didn't have to completely hide from. Tenyou still doesn't know the truth, but at least has some idea of just how close Rangetsu and Sogetsu were now that at least it's been reveled that they were twins.

This story has seriously devolved into being basically about the faces she makes. Literally. Every once in a while the revenge is mentioned but just in passing and then it's back to trying (and seriously failing) to hide how feminine she's becoming. It's not even about romance, just her possibly romantic confusion and blushing and big eyes and tears and ugh. And then the mystery was just revealed out of the blue and the little bit of tension and intrigue the plot was clinging to was eliminated. I don't know how much more of this I can take - may read the next volume, but we'll see...
Rangetsu's feelings are beginning to show, and Taihaku is starting to notice. So is one of the other princes. Will Rangetsu be able to keep her identity hidden until her twin brother's murderer is caught?
I liked the humor and bonding between Rangetsu and Taihaku. I feel bad that Prince Tenyou is being kept in the dark about a few things. I'm worried it will end badly if he isn't brought up to speed soon.
This series is still going strong, and I'm ready for things to hit the fan soon. Especially with that little hint with one of the beast servants and the princess.
I'm enjoying the development in all the relationships around Rangetsu. With Taihaku knowing the truth and forming a story of adorable bond over it where he's rather frustrated in trying to help keep it a secret and Rangetsu is just happy to have someone to confide in. It's rather sweet. Plus with how Tenyou is beginning to get a bit jealous of being left out and wanting to be closer to her just honestly is spelling romance that I want so bad!
so the dude told her that he knows her identity, she kind of has feelings for her master, the dude kind of has feelings for her. this is what we call a love triangle (thats not really a triangle) oh and boku the ajin for the 3rd prince and some sort of relationship with the sister. and I think she might have something to do with the death of her brother. very interesting so far.

Rangetsu is in love with Prince Tenyou and she's terrible at hiding it. So much so that she's caught the attention of not only Taihaku but also Prince Kougai. The secrets are slipping... but that's all part of the game. Which ones are more important to hide and which ones do you allow to get out?
The threads of the mystery are coming undone and new character relationships are being forged.
I love that Taihaku and Rangetsu are allies now. Their interactions in this volume are so cute! I was right to be suspicious of Boku, to think he's involved with that crazy girl... I'm worried about what will happen next. Especially with Kougai getting suspicious and Rangetsu not being able to hide her expressions well.

Things are getting complicated. Taihaku has admitted to knowing the secret. Tenyou is daydreaming about Rangetsu. Kougai wants Rangetsu. Ririn is jealous of Rangetsu. Rangetsu’s tail is too cute and has a mind of its own! We have now learned more about Sogetsu’s brutal murder. The art is amazing and the story is addictive. Love it.
