The War of the Wizards is finally over. The Wizards were brutal in enforcing their rule and had come together to bring the entire Kingdom under their rule. For years the populace was subjugated until other powerful magic users rose up along with their non-magical brethren and viciously put down the Wizard threat once and for all. The Wizards were rounded up and executed in front of their families, only children under a certain age were spared the Headman's axe. Soren was one of those children, forced to watch as their parents and family members were killed as a deterrent to any remaining magic user from attempting to conquer the Nation. The new leaders have done away with Kings, Queens and the rest of the nobility. People are now judged based on their merit instead of birthright. The only thing the young nation didn't take into account is how many magic users they lost during the war. Soren is revealed to be the strongest of them and he was old enough to remember his parents and their final few days. Many people seek to use him, to bully him and to guide him. Soren travels his own path and lets any would be enemies know that he is no ordinary magic user, he is Wizardborn.
I know a bunch of you have been asking exactly you the heck I am. First off, my name is Whiskey Flowers, I was active duty army and now I am a proud member of the New Mexico National Guard. In my day job, I am a corrections officer, I watch the best and brightest Albuquerque has to offer and make little money doing it. I am originally from Oakland, California, home of dumbasses and knuckleheads everywhere where I attempted to become their leader until the army put me on a different path. As many of you have pointed out, I never got my high school diploma, I am a GED student but I make it look good. If any of you are ever in New Mexico and want a drinking partner, I got you.
If you follow my reviews you will know that I have an affinity for bad books, at least of the "so bad it's good" variety. This book fits only the first half of that category. My quest to find more diamonds in the rough has led to some questionably browsing history, and Amazon, in all its glory (praise be!) has found fit to place before my eyes numerous erotic harem litRPG series, the Divine Druid series, and Whiskey Flowers. What is hasn't shown me are the books I'm looking for, those hidden gems like well-known favorites Moon People and Antigua: The Land of Fairies, Wizards and Heroes but not yet discovered. The lesson is that I have to trust those books to come to me instead of me seeking them out. That's how I discovered I'm-the-only-person-to-ever-read-these unknown treasures like Kaileb's Dream and Timemaster Era: Beginning of a new universe!. Still, on my current Kindle Unlimited free trial I have the bandwidth to take a chance, and figured that a minimum benefit of trying one of Flowers's books would give me an opportunity to rate it appropriately and hopefully stop Amazon from continuing to recommend his titles.
Dude has a lot of books. For this experiment, in order to give the author the best chance of winning me over, I selected a recently-published book (because why judge by 5-year old efforts if they might have improved since then? Spoiler alert: they didn't,) that was part 1 of a series or standalone and that had a decent number of ratings already. Thus, Wizard Born. It's about a wizard. He was born as such. That is as deep as the title goes.
So I expected it to be bad, while hoping it would be goodly bad. It was not; it was just bad. I'm not going to rail on grammar like many of the author's negative reviews do; it was not a big problem, honestly, aside from some missing commas that were used up elsewhere and inspired me to make this:
No, the basics of the written word did not escape the author. Every other aspect, however, did. The writing is utterly artless. Devoid of character, interesting phrasing, vocabulary, or varying sentence length. The prose is dreary, bland, numbing. That's the narration; dialogue is even worse. Speakers are stilted, boring, and characterless. Circular conversations abound; in fact, they make up perhaps 80% of the book. The first 25% of the book is the exact same topic being discussed over and over again without progression, literally without any action to break it up. As in, the characters take no actions while they are talking; the book is mostly super-long swaths of talking heads with no distinctive personalities.
Let's talk about the story: there, I'm done. That was the entire story. There is zero plot progression. Zero character arcs. Zero anything; absolutely nothing happens in this book, except that the main character gets some exercise. It doesn't even end on a cliffhanger; it just stops in the middle of basically nothing; I would say that it was at least the start of an event, but it's just the one thing that characters have been talking about being wary of happening for the previous 260 pages happened to someone off-screen, and the on-screen characters only maybe sort of react to it, but not really. They sure don't do anything about it, they just say words about it. The book's blurb is all crap; it all happens before the prologue. The only part that is actually seen in the book is: "Many people seek to use him, to bully him and to guide him." The rest is barely part of the background, an excuse for the main character to whinge, "I watched my parents be killed" as an excuse whenever called on his behaviour.
The main character whose name I have thankfully already forgotten (I only remember his brother Bob; deep cut into the speculative fantasy name bank there) is a total Mary Sue; the most powerful wizard in the land but for reasons he chooses to hide his ability, except for whenever it will give him an advantage and he uses spells secretly, not like he hides his spellcasting because apparently it just something he can do without any outward indication. Everyone who supports and respects him is cool; everyone who gives him a hard time is a total loser and gets their comeuppance, never mind that the MC goads them into fights like an asshole who can never be wrong about anything.
Worldbuilding is nonexistent beyond the fact that characters say "the pit" instead of "hell". Beyond that it's a featureless landscape of a beyond-generic fantasy action world. Oh, this war is going on? Why? Who knows. There's no magic system; any needed magic spell exists per the author's whim of the moment. There is a magic ranking system, and it's boring as hell and delivered in the info-dumpiest info-dump of info-dumps in the history of info-dumps. The characters then spend the whole of the book talking about their rankings and the impact of such on how much money the government will give them. The end.
I looked at the reviews and previews for some of the author's other books, old and new, and I don't see anything different. But, for reasons, he appears to have a consistent readership. Good for them.
Dear Amazon: now will you stop recommending these books to me? Please?
Finish a book please I like the books but he isn’t Finishing any he gets half way though a book and just stops he has 6 to 10 titles that are all half finished and just leaves you hanging tells you of I will finish book for so many reviews Or the next in series will be out in 3 to 4 months Trying to build a fan base by sticking it to your readers every time you release a new boo
Soren is a powerful wizard. He has seen his parents executed yet is expected to willingly serve those responsible. This does not go over well. Obstinanence, rebuking insults, and wariness ensue. I like the action, humor, and intrigue. I look forward to the next book.
What can I say but thank you so much for a wonderful escape. Whiskey’s books are my go to during cancer treatments. Thank you again for sending me a few books before they were published. I have since purchased and re read them all. I’m a little behind on reviewing all of your new books as I kinda got on a reading binge and Read one after another. But I promise I will get back to it.
The only thing I find annoying about this author's writing are the occasional grammatical errors, such as his use objective case in compound subjects (e.g "Him an me were ...") and incorrect usage " amount" when referring to countable things instead of "number" (e.g. "amount of people" instead of "number of people"). Such errors, although perhaps trivial, do jar me out of the story in my head and onto words printed on a page. But he does tell GOOD stories.
When you make it to the end of the book and read Whiskey's remarks you will stand up and yell " PIT YES ". This was a fun read just because of what he states in his remarks. And yes I know I am writing in a circle, it should give you a clue, read the book and the remarks.
I am retired from the Army, then the Chinese virus made me retire permanently. I just sit around all day reading, cause I can’t work anymore, which sux. When I am bored I just grab a Whiskey, the book kind, and my day gets brighter. His wife ain’t bad as an author either.
I would give this book more stars. But like many of your books, it just stops partway through and we are left waiting to see if you will ever write more for it. As an avid enjoyer of your writing, concepts and idea...I am just finding myself frustrated. If anyone knows any similar writers or books where the author cares about their readers, let me know.
I assumed I would read about a fourth of the book, and dump it. I was SO wrong. I loved it to the end. Top Wizard in the the country joins the Army as a infantry soldier, and refuses to use his magic. He eventually starts using it, but refuses to bond or marry any of the women that wants his magic.
The book is fairly good if a little rough, which I won't mind at all. But, and this is a big but, it ends abruptly on a major cliffhanger. I'm reading the book 2 years after the author says book 2 is 95% finished yet there is no book 2 in sight. I truly hate cliffhangers and would have given more stars if not for the abrupt ending.
The premise and characters are great the only problem is the many missing words and/or misplaced words. All of it can be figured out by context. However it does break reading flow
This was such a great story line. I couldn’t put it down. I’m looking forward to what happens next to Soren and his family and friends. Thank you for your imagination Wendy
I loved this. Can't wait for the next one. In fact I really like all your work I have read so far. The characters are easy to love and hate depending on your point of view. Hope your books keep coming!
Not going t chat much…. Enjoyed the book. I have read 90% of Whiskeys books. This is much like his others, but I love his style, so I’ll keep buy’n them. Keep it up Wiskey.
Character development is weak and the dialogue is a bit choppy at times. Interesting storyline but the book doesn’t flow well at times and seems to circle back on itself. That said it would have been a four star story if the book didn’t end in a cliffhanger.
Would you submit to peer pressure if the benefits sounded good, or would you make the difficult choice and go your own way. That's the question this book is answering for me, and leaving me excited at every page
This was awful. A bunch of teenage boy talking about deflowering girls, girls taunting boys about being small, jokes about fat girls, making money, being set for life.
Whiskey, did the last pages of the story go missing? I love your cute stories, but the endings always have me shaking my head. As usual, another fun read. I guess my imagination will have to fill in the ending.
Well written and thought out! From the moment you start reading the words grab you! You will not want to stop reading and the end makes you yell!? I am glad the next book is out!
This Author is so under rated!! I love whiskey's books. He should charge way more!! I love the way he write and I am hooked on his book... im a little drunk on whiskey book!! Lol 😉
Love the style of writing. This felt like a better effort, there wasn't so much "My name is Inigo Montoya you killed my father prepare to die!" In this book. That really made a quantitative effect on the story. Hope we see a sequel.
Love the main character. Very well thought out story arc. Looking forward to reading further stories in this series. I never comment on grammar or spelling. My preference is a good story. I enjoyed it. If you also enjoy good fantasy stories I recommend this author.
I always like you storys. I like your characters because they never back down for a wet day believing. The story is going great so far I can't wait for more.
