Feast on the flavors of America’s national parks with more than 70 delicious recipes inspired by their iconic lodges, landscapes, and chefs—including savory dishes, cocktails, and desserts.
Since the world’s first-ever national park—Yellowstone—was established, national parks have fed millions of hungry visitors in their historic dining rooms and restaurants. From Acadia’s famous puffy popovers to Zion’s loaded Navajo tacos , guests have long enjoyed a range of unique regional cuisines, meals made from foraged foods, and gourmet menus whipped up by celebrated chefs, even in the middle of nowhere.
Who can forget that piping-hot platter of Moose Drool–Braised Bison Short Ribs in Yellowstone , or the massive slab of Mile-High Blackberry Ice Cream Pie in Shenandoah ? Maybe you keep dreaming about the Huckleberry Margaritas from Grand Teton (and the spectacular sunset that accompanied them on the deck of Jackson Lake Lodge ), or you still order the same boysenberry pie from Yosemite that you remember from your childhood. (Pssst... It’s still made the same way as it was more than 60 years ago!)
Now you can re-create and enjoy these legendary recipes at home with The National Parks Cookbook !

Author Linda Ly wrote that this book was her absolute favorite project to date. Between the delicious recipes, intriguing facts about the National Park’s and Will Taylor’s breathtaking photography, this is by far one of the best cookbook’s I have ever seen. I thank Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the opportunity to read and review this cookbook!
With jaw-dropping photography, mouth-watering recipes, and a smidge of intriguing history about the national parks, this cookbook is a must for traveling foodies! I loved that the author was able to get some very specific recipes to fit the vibe of each national park, some even dating back decades and using quite localized ingredients. If you're not able to get precisely those ingredients, she suggests substitutions. A gorgeous addition to the bookshelf!
Thanks to Edelweiss and Harvard Common Press for this digital review copy!
Cookbook containing recipes from or inspired by dishes served at some of the most famous US National Parks. I enjoyed reading the introductions to each recipe. The pictures for the recipes and of the parks were gorgeous. I loved the wide variety of recipes and how they were divided up by the region the parks are in. Two things that I would change would be many of the recipes call for ingredients that are unique to the region where the National Park is in. I would like to see possible substitutions for ingredients like boysenberries and birch syrup. Regional sections were dived up by parks. It may have been nice to have them divided by recipe type instead (drinks, mains, side, snacks, etc). It seemed to disrupt the flow when browsing through.
This Splendid Cookbook is full of great interesting recipes and wonderful photos. These are not everyday camp cooking recipes for the most part. These are pretty special. I'm trying to pick something to fix for tomorrow's dinner right now. (Thanks to Net Galley & Linda Ly for this Book).
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. This was an enjoyable read! The pictures were gorgeous and the recipes fit perfectly with the parks. I’m definitely looking forward to trying some of these recipes. I’ve been to many national parks and always enjoy the spectacular views along with the wildlife.
This one really surprised me. The pictures are stunning. Even if you didn’t use a single recipe you would enjoy this book. But the recipes are outstanding! Not what I was expecting at all.
I loved this cookbook! As a frequenter of national parks, I can see myself purchasing this for friends as a gift. Did I come for the Jordan Pond House popover recipe? Yes. Was I pleasantly surprised with the mix of all types of recipes including apps, desserts and drinks? Yes! I also enjoyed the photographs and national park facts along the way, like how many berries you can pick in each park. Recipes were easy to follow with common ingredients and pictures.
This is a beautiful cookbook organized by national park regions. There are images of almost every recipe, and something for everyone here. I especially like the recipes based on parks in the southwest and west. This book will inspire you to plan a national park road trip, but before you do, you can make some inspired dishes at home! Thanks so much to NetGalley for the ARC!
This is an interesting one because one doesn’t necessarily associate the National Parks with home cooking. And yet, it’s actually a really good book. The book itself is beautifully laid out with excellent photographs both of the various dishes themselves and of the National Parks that inspired them. In that way, it’s almost a kind of armchair travel book about the National Park system.
But the recipes are also quite good. Most are fairly simple and use readily available ingredients, though the introduction does also give the beginning cook some tips on techniques and cookware. But I was actually surprised by how many of the recipes look like something I’d enjoy cooking and eating. Of course no cookbook ever perfectly matches any reader’s taste and admittedly this one is a little heavy perhaps on pies and other berry-based recipes, but I suppose that makes sense given the theme and even though I don’t cook a lot with berries, even those recipes, for the most part, look excellent.
The National Parks Cookbook is a must for any lover of our beautiful parks. The photography throughout the book is stunning and truly compliments the regional dishes that are perfectly described. It is so fun to pick a recipe and reminisce (or dream of visiting) the park that the recipe is based on.
The only wish I had was the recipe listed substitute suggestions for regionally specific items. For example, if bison or marionberries are hard to come by in my area, what can I use in place of that item? While this information can easily be found online it would be appreciated to have those suggestions listed within the book.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was an ok book.
This book groups some of the biggest National Parks by region (with Alaska getting its own) and shares recipes that are inspired by these parks and areas. There's recipes like chili, flat bread, and fish. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I wasn't really wowed by any of the recipes or found anything super special about them compared to other recipe books. There's some helpful recipes for food on the go to enjoy in the parks, but not a ton beyond that.
I love the National Parks, so I was happy to read this book. It was interestingly organized by parks not categories of food, and each recipe is accompanied by a write up of the park’s significance to the food, (mostly) pictures of the foods and the parks, and occasional essays about the parks and foods and food history. From a cookbook standpoint, I would have liked to see cooking time listed as well as servings.
Anyone who knows cookbook author Linda Ly, knows that she is an expert on outdoor cooking. The National Parks Cookbook: The Best Recipes from (and Inspired by) America’s National Parks is a little different from her other cookbooks, but just as good. The recipes aren’t necessarily cooked outside; rather they use ingredients such as wild game, to make dishes that one would think would be served at restaurants in the national parks. All of the parks are included, and the recipes are mouthwatering. There are dozens of good recipes that almost everyone will find very appealing.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner with a list of ingredients followed by succinct instructions that are easy-to-follow and can be prepared by both beginning and advanced cooks. Many of the recipes will appeal to children and families, and even kids will love perusing the recipes because there are some beautiful photographs of the national parks, as well as most of the dishes. The recipes include side dishes, soups, snacks, main dishes, and desserts, and are organized according to the national park they represent. Each recipe includes notes preceding the recipes with interesting vignettes, information on the national park, and hints to make the recipe easier to prepare.
All told, this is another Linda Ly cookbook that is well-written and presents great recipes. Anyone who loves good food, especially good food that they are introduced to in a national park, will want to pick up this excellent cookbook.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I just wanted to read something a little different and this fit the bill. I am no expert on national parks, although I am familiar with them. I was very curious to see what these recipes were like and was excited when I could finally add this off my backlist.
Here is a compilation of recipes of various foods: drinks, side dishes, main courses, snacks, etc. reflecting the area/region (Saguaro Fruit Salsa from Saguaro National Park, Navajo Tacos for Zion National Park, Peanut Soup for Shenandoah National Park, etc.) with instructions, some tidbits of information and pictures of the completed dish. Pretty much a standard cookbook!
And even though you might think these are things you could whip up in the national park on a trip...no. As the book says, it is designed with the home cook in mind that could possibly feed a small family, but for the most part you probably can't make most of these on the road unless you're creative or have access to a more standard kitchen at some point of your journey, etc. That said, though they do seem relatively accessible for a home cook to make, although YMMV.
I liked it but did not make anything from it. I really read it out of curiosity than anything else (plus the impacts of the national parks happening now). If you're someone who has gone to any of them, would like a "project" where you cook your way through the parks, want to throw a "themed" party or even just for trying out the dishes in this book, you might like this a lot.
Bought as a bargain buy and that was best for me. Definitely a fun gift for the right person.
The National Parks Cookbook from Linda Ly is both attractive and full of intriguing recipes.
When I say attractive, I don't just mean nice pictures of the food. Some of the other photographs, of the parks, make this more beautiful than most cookbooks. With wonderful recipes and some great anecdotes, this is a fun book to have on your coffee table or in your kitchen.
I tried two of the recipes, one of which I scaled back since I didn't need as much as the recipe called for, and both were very good and easy to follow. I hope to try a few more, though the recipe I scaled back is going to be a regular from now on.
Okay, this is really going to date me, but my first thought when I saw the book was of Euell Gibbons. If you're young, or even middle-age, the name probably means nothing to you. While he may well have enjoyed this book, it is not quite as "back-to-nature" as he was. Which actually makes this a more useful cookbook.
Highly recommended for both cooks looking for new recipes and those of us who have frequented many of these parks and enjoyed the cuisine. I also think it would make a nice coffee table book. I use them as much for conversation starters as anything, and what starts people talking better than food?
Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley.
I was seriously impressed by this cookbook. As someone who loves to bake and cook, and also loves to hike and travel to national parks, I was very excited to receive a copy of this book to review. I think the author absolutely nailed it with the execution of this book's concept. You learn so much about the history of each park, and the recipes are inspired by local ingredients from each park's region. The recipes themselves also look delicious. I am particularly excited about the popover recipe!
Not only did this cookbook make me want to cook new dishes, they also made me want to pack my backpack and hop on a plane immediately to go to a park. Even though I received a free digital copy, I was only able to access it via the Netgalley app and the license expired so I can no longer view it through the app. I loved this one enough to immediately buy a physical copy for myself when the license expired!
This would make an excellent gift for anyone who loves our nation's parks. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my complimentary copy! This is one I will be recommending a lot.
So I haven't tried any recipes yet (although many are tempting), but one thing is for certain ... this is probably the most beautiful cookbook I've ever seen ... and I've been enjoyed purchasing cookbooks for decades. The photographs in this cookbook are just stunning. I only had the opportunity to review the ebook edition, but this seems like it will be first class. (When you use as a cookbook, you are going to want a plastic protector over it! Thats for sure!)
Not all of the National Parks are represented, this cookbook concentrates recipes around 10 of the most popular National Parks.
Looking forward to trying some recipes. This would make a really nice Christmas present; I actually know who will be receiving for Christmas (now that I think about it).
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review the advance read copy of The National Parks Cookbook. Linda Ly is the author of this stunning cookbook and the publisher is Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press. Released Oct 2022.
The National Parks Cookbook by Linda Lu is a “must add” to your kitchen library! I love to travel and I love visiting state parks. I don’t usually stop and eat while in the park as I usually bring my own trail mix and quick foods. So naturally, I was curious what might be found in a national parks cookbook. The intro does a god job providing some background and setting up the idea. I appreciate the focus on using everyday items found in the kitchen as well as simple ingredients. The pictures from the various parks are stunning and the pictures of the final products from the recipes are inspiring. There’s a wide variety of culinary delights (and drinks) present (each reflective of the region they represent), so this cookbook would be a good fit for anyone who enjoys trying new recipes. There are great historical tidbits all throughout, so I learned a lot about our national parks through the reading as well. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
What a great book! Some years ago, we travelled through some of the national parks. Yosemite, Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon… This book brought me right back to these magical places. It is a lovely combination of the love for nature, curiosity about the parks, and the delicious foods they have to offer, The pictures are beautiful. The author shares lots of interesting facts about the various parks and their history. The recipes are really great. They are well explained and interesting. Some of the ingredients might be hard to find, like elk, but one could try it with good alternatives available in your region. I appreciated the information about the ingredients and the fact that the quantities were in both units of measurement. I baked the Appfelkuchen and it was delicious. In fact, by the time the four adults had a slice on their plate, my grandson, who had been served first, had already finished his slice and commented that it was really good. And there are many more recipes in this book I am going to try. This books gets top marks for me!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
Take a trip to some of America’s most beautiful National Parks through the amazing photos and tasty recipes contained in this book. The recipes are based on the foods found in the parks, for example: blueberries, blackberries, wild rice, white fish, crab. I am interested in trying out the recipe for Superior Whitefish Tacos or Minnesota Wild Rice Soup. They sound great. There are recipes for drinks and snacks as well as meals.
The book includes some history about the parks and the story of how Fred Harvey brought improved food service to the parks in an effort to promote tourism to the national parks.
The book would make a good coffee table book as well as a great cookbook for anyone looking for some fresh ideas.
This cookbook is AWESOME!!! It has photos of the recipes (which I love!! I personally need a visual to know I'm following along correctly!) and it uses local ingredients from each of the different regions! I think that is super special, never heard of some of them before (like lingonberries!), and I cannot wait to make these recipes! I will be trying out the cocktails and the sugar cream pie first!! Also! I love the extra hiker food tips, history, foraging information, etc! Imagine going to visit a national park, foraging some berries, and then using them to make a sweet treat/cocktail at camp! Maybe its more of a glamping thing but it is extra special when you can get the ingredients straight from nature!
Gorgeous photographs accompany the mouth-watering recipes included in this cookbook. These are much fancier meals than I had when visiting the parks but are definitely reminiscent of what is available and makes me long to visit these parks again. I loved the recipes for the different mules in the Grand Canyon section and the story about Fred Harvey and his influence on the parks was a nice addition. I have always been a fan of Navajo Fry Bread and will be trying that recipe this weekend. Highly recommended for a little different meal during the week or as a lead up to a National Parks vacation.
I received a copy from #NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Presss for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of 'The National Parks Cookbook," for my honest opinion. Wow, this cookbook has the most breathtaking images. From the images of the parks to the ones of the awesome recipes, this is a cookbook worth buying for the outdoors person in your life. I have only been to the Smokey Mountains, but this book definitely makes me want to travel to all of them! To be honest I wasn't expecting much when it came to the recipes in the book, maybe some granola, chili, smores and other camping food, but it was much more! I was very surprised on the attention to detail for recipes based on the park resources. I loved that there were cocktails recipes like the Huckleberry Margarita and Blueberry Basil Frose! I will for sure be purchasing this for my favorite hiker.
Anyone who has been to a National Park knows that the experience is magical. Acadia in Maine is one of my favorite places in the world and the one I always think about when I am looking for a sense of peace. I know that others have their own special parks.
At all of them, food is available. At Acadia, for me, it was all about the popovers. And, yes (!), the recipe is here. It is one of many in this beautifully illustrated book.
Highly recommended for those who like to eat, (armchair) travel and recall good times.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for this title. All opinions are my own.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher. This was an interesting cookbook with a variety of recipes and cocktails from and inspired by a variety of national parks. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. They have a variety of regional dishes. There are many tips about cooking and alternatives throughout the book. There is also a lot of information about the national parks and places before each of the recipes. There are also a few different separate pieces about the parks. I thought that this was an interesting cookbook. It feels like an easy way to travel through the parks without having to leave home. The majority of the ingredients are accessible, with things like canned goods.
Thank you NetGalley, Linda Ly and Quarto Publishing Group for the copy of The National Parks Cookbook. This is my personal review. This is an amazing cookbook. It would also make a wonderful coffee table book because of the stunning photos in it. I have on my bucket list for retirement to visit National Parks and now I know what fabulous goods to have while we are there. I am excited to make some of the recipes in the book for my family. This will be a great gift to put under the tree for all of my friends and family that love to cook!
Delightful cookbook with lovely pictures of the National Parks and the food associated with them. The cookbook would be worth it alone for the Acadia National Park Pop-overs recipe! For each park I have ties to, I found delightful recipes that I can see the association to the park or area of the country. The book is not only a lovely cookbook but a nice glimpse of the diversity of America, both in land and culture. I think this book would make a fun gift for any traveler or cook!
I received a free PDF copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
