I really enjoyed this manga and can’t wait to read the rest. Art is great story has humor with a little fan service but it’s not degrading to woman since they are ones with powers. It also has plot a long with action and characters all had fun personalities.

"I want to contribute as a hero. If licking a boot will make that dream come true... then I'll do it!!!"

Going to open this review to shit on VIZ Media, as well as write a bit about America's odd treatment of Japanese things. So, Mato Seihei no Slave is a shōnen battle harem manga which is published on the Internet-based magazine Shōnen Jump+. The regular print magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump was home to such hit battle series as Dragon Ball and Naruto, with One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen enjoying popularity today. Historically, VIZ Media is the American publisher for Jump manga. Historically, VIZ have terrible localization practices, the most egregious being erasing Japanese sound effects and replacing them with bland anglicized versions, ruining the artist's original composition. In a more niche sense, VIZ are happy to censor things wherever they please; early prints of Dragon Ball would show Bulma's nipples or Mr. Popo's lips; Rock Lee fights the Sound Four and Kimimaro in Naruto with a magic "potion" that makes him "loopy," avoiding mention of the classic martial arts Drunken Fist technique. Sometimes, VIZ refuses to localize certain manga outright; there was never any chance for To Love-Ru to be published by VIZ; Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs was notably absent went VIZ started making a bigger effort to push more of what ran in Weekly Jump; more recently, they refused to continue translating Ayakashi Triangle for Shueisha's MangaPlus app, despite the whole point of MangaPlus being for VIZ to help Americans access the entire Jump magazine every week. Lucky for English-Only Plebeians, Seven Seas picked up the slack, and published the aforementioned ecchi manga through their Ghost Ship label.

Mato Seihei is, curiously, published by Yen Press, a company unrelated to Seven Seas. To my knowledge, and I may be mistaken, Oshi no Ko is the only other notable Shueisha - or at least Jump-related - manga localized by that publisher. I don't know if OnK has any really "naughty" content that would make VIZ pass on it, but... I know the anime is doing very well, so I hope YP makes a shitload of money off this release and people at VIZ lose their jobs for dropping the ball. Did I mention I hate VIZ? I did? Oh....

I don't remember for what manga I complained about this before, but it's dumb to me that this manga gets an "M" rating when it's literally for underage boys. It's "shōnen," so it's assumed to be safe for twelve-year-olds. In Japan, at least. Looking at the back of the volume, you see Yen Press hitting them with the full range of content warnings: L N S V. "S" is fair; there's a good bit of sexual content because the basic premise is Kyouka has to give naughty favors to Yuuki as terms for his service, per her ability. Nudity is questionable, but reasonable; we see naked nipples at one (1) point. Violence is toeing a line; there is violence here, there is blood here, but it's not really "Mature-rated" violence. I don't think I read much Yen Press, so I can't compare appropriately, but this manga is way less violent than Jump's Sakamoto Days, which VIZ slaps with a T+ rating for "older teens." Honestly, I've seen nastier gore in VIZ's Teen-rated Hero Academia. The content warnings label here is misleading; there IS violence, but the manga isn't M-rated because of its violence at all. No fuckin' idea what's going on with the Language rating, unless it's because of allusions to Yuuki's penis. There are no real dirty words here, aside from what could be lumped under the Sex rating already.

A minor point that bugs me enough to mention but not enough to be really mad about: Yen Press totally censored this manga's title because Americans are stupid. The Japanese title says "slave" rather than something like "dorei." The English word is used. In general, the new localized English title is already boring; same shit as the change from Kimetsu no Yaiba to "Demon Slayer"; "Chained Soldier" just sounds so much more generic than "Slave of the Magic Capital's Elite Troops," just as I'd personally much rather read a manga called "Blade of Demon Destruction" than simply "Demon Slayer." But there's also a feeling that the word "slave" was intentionally omitted. Why not call the manga "Slave Soldier" or "Soldier Slave"? After all, "slave" is in the Japanese title. And the English text still has the girls call Yuuki their "slave." Ah, is it the same reason why Boba Fett doesn't have a name for his spaceship anymore?? 🤔

****

Now, as for my takes on the manga itself: I quite like it, and I'm pleasantly surprised with how it turned out. Now, I imagined I'd enjoy it already, as like a shōnen-flavored take on something like Desire Pandora. As long as there's ass and titties and the art is okay, I'm probably going to enjoy the manga. The "femdom" element is pretty interesting because it's not so common in ecchi harem manga, or, if it is, it's limited to a character gimmick for one or two girls, rather than being the central premise. I'll admit, I had no real idea of what this manga was about other than that the girls have to do lewd things for their powers to work. Which apparently seems to be the case exclusively for Kyouka? I figured there were some kind of enemies, as there must be, but I didn't expect generic takes on the Hollows of Bleach - but it does seem we're soon moving into more humanoid antagonists, so that's cool.

The art is a little weird to me because it gives me the feeling of anything other than an original manga. Like, my first thought was the manga version of Little Witch Academia, and my second was the manga version of A Certain Magical Index (I think both by Yen Press, actually?). Something about the character design feels like "this is not the first version of the art." Like it's someone else's take on anime or light novel designs. But that's not the case. I guess there's also a cartoony flavor that stands out as feeling almost not-Jump in the way it looks nothing like Naruto or Sakamoto Days, which I've been reading lately. But it does sometimes feel like HeroAca, so... I don't know 🤷. The paneling is generally good, and works well to extinguish feelings that this manga looks like a secondary run through a story, as mentioned above. Also, all the faces are really expressive, which feels "soulful." Sometimes the art feels a little "Korean webtoon," but this is a feeling I have with Kaiju No. 8 (also Jump+), so I guess it's just a common-ish thing.

The biggest thing about the art to me is that... the girls mostly aren't "overtly" hot? Like Kyouka is definitely attractive, but not necessarily drawn in such a way that I want to stop reading and head over to a Booru or ExH for some quick stress relief. The sexuality of the girls is mostly subdued; Shushu is the only one who looks explicitly "sexy" to me in a neutral appearance. Where Takemura-sensei shines with his art is those (many) scenes when Kyouka is compelled by the law of her Ability to seduce Yuuki, and her face is extremely flushed. It almost feels like a different dude is drawing her because of the stark change, but you can still tell this is the same Kyouka we just saw fighting the Shuuki. We don't see enough of the other girls yet to see how far it will go, but we also don't have any reason to believe the other girls' Abilities will require them to blush so much, so....

The story itself is okay, but we're in very much of a "let's introduce all the characters before anything 'big' happens" phase, like how many manga start. There's a distinctly non-"Western" feel to the way the manga treats its basic lore premise; the world has been impacted by the existence of a parallel dimension full of monsters, and only women are able to gain the Abilities needed to combat the monsters; this is because we need an excuse for the male protagonist to be surrounded by attractive girls, whereas New Yorkers or Californians might write a similar story about frumpy girlbosses flipping The Patriarchy™ on its head. Either way, it's Girl Power. Just... one version is nicer to look at, and that is, blissfully, the one we have right here. So the Peaches that grant women their powers are I guess inspired by the mythic story of Izanagi, but they feel like One Piece Devil Fruits in a way that's kinda cool to see if not for any other reason than "Oda's pirate manga is still running in the print magazine, so no one else can have magic fruit powers until he's done." Jump+ is free to use Devil Fruit, I guess. Probably can't get away with pirate settings, though.... Anyway, we don't see a lot of powers yet, so hopefully there is a) more variety and b) more applications for the girls we've met. Right now, it seems Kyouka has the "best" power, simply because hers is the power that links directly to our protagonist. Technically, Shushu should be the strongest, as she utterly disregards the laws of physics, but... that's not how comics work - Ant-Man isn't ever as strong as Doctor Strange or Scarlet Witch. Himari can turn her body into weapons, but we don't see much of her in action just yet. Nei is clairvoyant, but we have no way to know if there's any combat ability there. The Shuuki, as mentioned before, are all kinda generic in appearance, and are mostly just maxing STR. The manga ends with what seems like could be an Arrancar type, so maybe we'll have enemy women with Peach powers and Shuuki adds?

****

Some things I liked: Kyouka in "The Pose" on the page adjacent to the start of Chapter 3; Shushu growing her body such that her ass is pinning Yuuki down and we get a good look at it; the concept of Yuuki having to pull off Kyouka's tights, but I feel we didn't go far enough with it (for one, I have mixed feelings on the shiny way some artists draw tights; for another, I'm so used to scenes like this having a weird "steam" effect around feet and thighs and sometimes crotch, so it's almost unnerving to just see sweat droplets).

Pretty interesting story concept in general and beautiful art, especially when it comes to the girls/women and background (in larger panels).
It's a more adult version of a harem manga - which was rather unexpected, I have to admit - and it's fun to have the usual (sexual) tension mixed with entertaining and even a little violence as well as the mystery surrounding the world.
Right now there's quite a big focus on the sexual parts, which I don't mind, but therefore the general story and its world building comes a little short - I sincerely hope they find a good balance for the coming volumes. Then it's very promising!

The first tankoubon of the manga serial Chained Soldier featured a strong start for a hero's journey while it began to take its time to answer the question, "What is a boy or man to do to prove his worth to everyone around him as a hero when the federal government of his birth nation refuses to give its male citizens the benefit of the doubt due to a recently discovered gender difference in regards to advantage in the fight against murderous monsters?", presenting a variation of the subject of beating the odds, and I admire the manga's writer Takahiro's willingness to portray both the elimination of equal gender rights and the belittling of good men just wanting to be great at something in a bad light, exposing the tragic consequences of an infamous political decision made in the first chapter as its something I doubt current year Hollywood filmmakers (at least in general) will ever do when making a movie with girl bosses since they are apparently more interested in pushing woke/politically correct propaganda nonsense down people's throats than telling fun and exciting fictional stories with moral messages that we can all understand and embrace. Fortunately, Chained Soldier has for a female protagonist a beautiful girl boss we can all root for as she is a courageous lady who is willing to give an male underdog a chance to become the hero he desires to be as opposed to being a gatekeeper who puts down all boys and men and denies assistance from them in the name of female empowerment, all while on a quest to become a better ruler of her organization than its current one (and she earned her spot in my list of waifus too). As for obstacles, the female protagonist's followers could be seen as a part of what tests the underdog while he aides the heroine herself, especially Himari Azuma and Shushu Suruga, two women who take him for granted. I know it's only the first tankoubon, but Chained Soldier is truly a fun epic manga that shows how to do girl bosses right, and I look forward to seeing where the heroine and her underdog aide go next in tankoubon 2 (I hope they tie the knot in the final tankoubon by the way because they're so good together).

Demon Slave Tome 1 by Takahiro (Japon) & Yohei Takemura/ Kurokawa /Sorti le 11 Février 2021. 208 Pages.

I thought it looked interesting and wanted to give it a try, explore new genres and ended up really liking it. Thought I was surprised because I usually don’t enjoy stories like this.

I thought this is going to be action with some mild fan service (panty shots and boob zooms), but it’s actually ecchi, if that’s even the right term at this point. There is a LOT of fan service. And it’s not even only that. This is kinky too in a harem like setting.

Obviously there is femdom, that’s basically in the whole story, women get powers and now men are seen as the weaker gender. I love that. It’s sweat and simple and well done. Women are still sexualised in this so beware!

Other than the femdom there seems to be a macro and foot fetish, absolutely not my thing (more the opposite, I dislike it a lot), but in this, it wasn’t bothersome.

On top of that, we actually get a good story which in its nature isn’t ecchi. Girls fighting demons! And they all have a thought out backstory and there is some mystery aspect to it since they don’t know everything about the demons yet.

I read the first three in a row and the first just focused to introduce the story, some characters and the world building.

A female-dominated matriarchal society? Cool. Women finally achieving all the wins in Olympic sports when on equal grounds against men? Very unlikely, but great for the female athletes. What I disliked is the complete disrespect men were given in reading this book. The idea of househusbands being a common thing is weird to me because I'm a fairly traditional person who believes I, as a wife, should be the one making my house a true home while my husband works and brings home our family's money instead of vice-versa. Of the manga novels I've read this year, this was my least favorite. Though I love to read about strong female characters, the females in this book were all straight-up bullies to the male character, Whatshisname. Even he was forgettable to me, and he was the main male character I sympathized for the entire book! I'm not as big a fan of this book as I started out thinking I would be, but that's okay; this book simply wasn't my cup of tea, and it might be for others, and that's perfectly okay, too. Sorry to author Takahiro, but I won't be reading any more installments within this series...

More of a 3.5 star rating;
I was pleasantly surprised by this manga since I heard it was mainly supposed to be an ecchi series. However, the ecchi aspect of the storyline didn’t take away from the fight scenes and wasn’t too excessive. As for the story itself, I really liked the way that the women-only power system was described and has been handled so far. I also like that Yuuki wasn’t immediately liked by all of the girls on the Demon Defense Force and it shows he’ll actually have to gain development with each young woman on the team, for them to even be his friend let alone a potential love interest.
I’m very excited for the next volume due to 1-maybe-2 familiar faces as the enemies and what that confrontation can mean for Yuuki and the rest of the Demon Defense Force.

I want to give this a 4.5 stars but I will give it 5 for their sake. Overall story is cool imo because harem with action in world on brink of an imminent threat is a great combination.

Cons

It has a simpler style and backgrounds are lacking in some scenes, while also characters simply drawn with no shadow and bold lines. (Not all the time, some scenes are very well drawn and touched up)

Pros
I like the premise and theme, the fanservice/echii could be better or a little more frequent but we’ll see what happens in vol 2.
The characters are all neat and have a lot a backstory that could be fleshed out.

The art was very hit and miss, usually I don't focus on it that much but there wasn't really much plot in this. The guy gets transported into a world of monsters, girl saves him and gives him a power up but he has to be her slave.

That's about it the only interesting bit was the girl who blackmails him later on as it's just fun to read, the leads don't really have anything going for them. As for the art the people are well drawn it's just the monsters are a bit janky and not memorable whatsoever.

is probably the only thing that makes me interesting in picking up the next volume as this was pretty generic.

3,5 stars. As is tradition in a subset of mainstream manga, authors will try to awe their new potential audience with a fresh niche of carnal ideas, and in this iteration it's time to enjoy the sweet fruits of submissiveness. Fortunately, this overarching theme never gets unreasonably gratuitous and fulfils it's part in enhancing the flavour of an otherwise rather straightforward and tropey shounen, which admittedly has great art and offers plenty of fast paced fun. So, when you're not in the mood to engage your brain cells or delve into particularly heavy drama, this book is an A-OK way to get your primeval instincts into higher gear.

The women being on top and men being second tier makes for a unique take on this genre of manga. Contains the usual fan service that comes with it but pretty enjoyable intro to the series so far. I'm hooked enough to continue reading. This volume leaves you with a bit of a cliff hanger. I've enjoyed the building of relationships so far.

I actually liked this and I wasn’t sure about it! It’s a bit goofy sure but I like that. The concepts of the peaches and the demons are very cool actually and I look forward to more! So far the biggest things I see myself having to ignore are a weird sibling and someone who’s very young (I’m hoping she’ll be the only pure one of the bunch)

The story is good but I can't get into it, the lack of clear consent (and crappy excuses for disrespecting boundaries) are always debilitating to the story for me. I really removed two stars because of that.

Really not sure what to make of this series yet. The premise is interesting, but something isn't sitting right with me about the execution so far. I'll have to read another volume or two to figure out if it can actually hook me on something.
