I'll be honest, I went in with mixed feelings. While I loved the previous books, I well, loved the prequel and the first two books so much that I didn't want to read about characters who weren't the main characters from those books. I wasn't sure if I'd click with Meiling and Shang as much as I had with the previous main characters... boy was I wrong. Because Meiling was perfect, and so, so relatable with her struggles with anxiety and uncertainty. And her chemistry with Shang was simmering despite the fact that neither of them have fire magic.
Also, I loved all the cameos from other characters I've already previously met. Especially the Aryana and Kai one.
Even though I knew certain things that would happen because of the events of the other two books, I had no idea how it would play out. And that ending, gah! I honestly don't know how I'll wait for the next installment, but I need it. Now. Yesterday. Whenever I can get my hands on it.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive view and all views and opinions are my own.
I love Meiling and the complications of her hidden magic. I loved the "cursed princess"/people dodging her shadow at the beginning.
I liked seeing a full shifter in action, knowing what we know from the previous books about their tempers and self control issues. It gave me a Lord of the Rings type complaint though that she didn't turn into a giant eagle and carry Meiling to their destination on day 1. 🤣 Where would the story be though, right?
I liked how she got a chance to explore her abilities and makes me wonder what she is capable of, so I'm excited for the next book.
I like the crossover from Warrior. I hope the healer gets her own story at some point too.
I'm super curious about the illusionist and how he'll come into play in the next book.
I like the slow burn romance and can't wait to see that develop more in the next book.
I liked the dynamics of the group by the end, and that Meiling was starting to use her abilities to contribute.
All in all, I love the Zheninghai Chronicles, obviously... And I will read anything Blythe writes. She has that perfect combo of action, sweet romance, fantasy, friendships, found family... All my favourites.
While a great departure from the dynamics of the previous book, this was still a greatly enjoyable entry in the Zhening Hai Chronicles. Meiling is not the brash, seeming fearless warrior that Aranya is. And Shang isn't the massive flirt and cocky smart aleck that Kai is. Instead we have two much quieter MCs who skirt about each other, never really saying much and trying to deal with the circumstances that have been dealt them. While I enjoy and typically prefer the dynamic of the first two books, it is nice to see the quiet type of strength that comes with being maligned and slandered and still being able to stand somewhat straight and push on. Shang is the strong silent type for the most part, though he defrosts a bit as the story goes. I don't especially care for his response to learning about Meiling's magic, but tough times call for tough decisions. I ESPECIALLY don't appreciate the cliffhanger ending, but it is what it is. Another wonderful book in this series. Recommend wholeheartedly for those who enjoy the wuxia/xianxia genres.
Anna has done it again! I loved this latest book to The Zheninghai Chronicles! In fact, it may just be my new favourite! 🥰
I’m so excited to follow the new characters, especially Meiling! I love how she finds her own ways to be strong and maintains her courage, regardless of her circumstances. I’m so happy we get 2 more books with Meiling and Shang. ☺️
Go read this series! Go read this book! 🙃
(I received a free eARC in exchange for my honest review)
Wow. I just finished this book and I'm trying to find the right words to express what a fantastic ride Princess of Shadows and Starlight was. Truly, it's even more interesting considering how it all started for me.
I knew going in that this book would feature different main characters (Princess Meiling and Shang), and thus, even though it's set in the same world we're already used to (the Zheninghai empire, and yes, this is the reason why you need to have read the previous books), I was aware a transition period was bound to happen for me to warm up and get to know these new characters (especially knowing how much the author loves them). I just got to say that I loved how different yet similar this story felt compared to the previous one (Aranya and Kai's): there's a mission, they're traveling in a group of 3 (or 4? 😉 gotta love Fen and Bo), there's banter and camaraderie, and the MCs are definitely opposites.
However, it's also unique in that Meiling couldn't be more different from Aranya (and I'm not only talking about their magic, but rather their upbringings and backgrounds), we've got a sidekick(?) for part of the story, and the overall focus and pace are different. Yes, there's still the same hold-your-breath action we're used to by now, coupled with some really sweet and swoony moments (from the use of the Yanzhao technique and only one horse to her taking care of him, just to name a few.) However, what I loved and enjoyed the most was the character growth and how much I could identify with Meiling. How she longs to find her place in the world, to follow her dreams, to be able to reach the stars, while at the same time knowing the expectations that have been placed on her, how she is viewed by the people throughout the empire, and what her limitations are. Seriously, her growth was my favorite, and by that, I mean both in her personality and standing up for herself as well as her magic. I definitely loved learning how there was so much more to it than what we were first told! Getting to see her in action, helping both Fen and Shang throughout their journey was definitely cool.
Speaking of Shang, I feel like there's a lot we have yet to meet about him, but what we've been shown so far has me definitely rooting for him. Seriously, after that cliffhanger ending, I can't wait to see how he'll be in the next book. Also, I wanted to note that while I usually miss the Hero's POV when the book is told from the heroine's single POV, (and don't get me wrong, I'm still dying to have a chapter from Shang's POV,) it's usually the sweet tender moments that more than make up for it (and as I said before, they're really good, especially that cave scene. 😏😍 *swoony sigh*)
Overall, this book was fantastic since it slowly made me fall for all of its many-layered characters (some were definitely faster than others *cough* Fen *cough*), it had me holding my breath through all the action (can I mention how cool Shang's magic is? 🤩), it had me laughing at Bo's antics, and it kept me turning the pages for Meiling and Shang's slow burn romance (the last quarter of the book makes up for all of it, and despite knowing how the cliffhanger was going to happen, I was definitely not prepared for how it all played out. It made me teary-eyed, and that rarely happens!) So, seriously, go catch up on this series if you still haven't yet, and go snatch your copy as soon as this baby releases! You won't regret it! I'll just be here (im) patiently waiting for the next one. ~ 5 stars!
Content: Violence: fight- or fantasy-related (bruises, burns, cuts, etc.) Language: made up for the world
ARC review Although this is the third book in the series, you don't need to have read the other two books before this one, so don't worry! This is a parallel storyline that you can enjoy even without the Kai/Aranya series. This book made me cry, laugh, swoon, and sigh—when I tell you it as all-the-things, I'm not exaggerating. There's action, adventure, (clean) romance, magic, a bit of mystery, and politics, plus we get some truly fantastic truth bombs that pluck at your heartstrings. And did I mention, it's also got a cute baby panda? On the plot side, mystery revolves around Meiling, both regarding her magic and her attempted abduction. Both get few answers, as nothing is revealed in full, but there's enough action that you don't mind waiting. (And don't worry, we do get to see plenty of Meiling's magic in this book, even if we don't know the full extent of it.) Meiling and her bodyguards are never safe from monsters, brigades, and even the weather, and there are plenty of amazing fight scenes with a variety of magics (mostly Shang's ice and Fen's shapeshifting). One of my favorite things was how despite the danger, there was still such beauty. We feel Meiling's wonder as she travels through a world she's never experienced, and even dangerous monsters can be beautiful. On the character side, we see three vastly different personalities struggle to co-exist, which was such a treat to experience. Shang's serious, taciturn nature works somewhat well with Fen's impulsive ferocity, and Meiling's sweetness balances both while bringing much-needed compassion. Although most of the time, the trio operates as enemies, it was rewarding to see them work together well (especially when Meiling tries to pull her own weight despite not having Academy training). It makes it all the sweeter whenever Meiling and Shang ACTUALLY get along. Finally, on the more abstract side, I loved Meiling's internal monologue. She is an introspective person who sees far more than you'd expect, and there were some serious moments that contemplated life, dreams, and the purpose of each person. I love how Meiling has been hurt but is still so hopeful and kind. She doesn't become bitter, and works on being better instead. Overall, I loved this book. It was more serious than the previous two books (and there's definitely a cliffhanger, so watch out), but it needed to be written. If you're looking for something with heart that's action-filled and fun, this is definitely for you.
ngl this one was kind of boring and redundant to me. since it went back on the story in books 1-2 from new characters to bring the story together i just didn't really care because i want to get back to where the plot left off, not read a new angle of the same plot. it seems to me that the story is going to be two storylines: kai and aranya books 1-2, meiling and shang books 3-4, and then the plot is going to finish in book 5, so im worried book 4 is also going to bore me. because even though this is going into more about the princess and her capture, which is mentioned in books 1-2 and is a point of interest and the plot, book 3 starting way before her capture and freedom makes the plot of these boring because you already know what is going to happen.....
APART FROM THAT... i absolutely loved the magical lore in this and wish there was more of it. i am hoping that the next two books really bring that out with meiling's magic, because this just scraped at the surface of what could be dived into. i am really hoping the author follows through with that and doesn't neglect that development. meiling's magic is so interesting and cool and it's so fascinating reading about the coloured glows of the magic that she sees, the soul tethers and the mind magic. i enjoyed the lore about the magical categories and subcategories and how they glow differently, and was really hoping they would dive into that more, especially when it was mentioned that Shang knows all the categories and subcategories i was hoping that after meiling's magic was revealed that they would talk about the different glow colours and subcategories and look into it more. all i can do now is hope that is still to come as there are still two more novels. i hope they don't let me down and i hope i'm not bored with the plot like this one. it just felt like pointless running around on their little quest, and i know it was all to focus on meiling's magic and introduce that since it is obviously a major part of the main storyline, but i almost think there are better ways to introduce and discover that without doubling back for an entire novel. just my two cents, sorry lmao.

Wow…!! I forgot how much I adore Anastasis Blythe’s writing. Literally everything was perfection!!! 🤩🤩🤩 From the very first page to the last I was completely engaged and couldn’t put it down!
Meiling was so relatable and I loved how even though she was shy and had struggles and hurts, she never gave up but kept pushing and trying. I loved her so much!! 😍 Her magic is incredible and I can’t wait to see what all she can do with it. I feel so bad for her and how she’s be secluded her whole life, all due to her “curse”. 🥲 She deserves the world! Shang was a great second MC! I loved how even though he seemed so cold and tough, he actually had a soft heart inside. Watching him slowly soften to Meiling was so sweet (I mean that scene near the end?! 😭😍). We don’t know too much about him yet, so I’m excited because starting in the next book we’ll have his POV!!
I loved the dynamics between the characters! Shang and Fen fought and argued nonstop, and they were mainly indifferent to Meiling, but when it came down to it they had each other’s backs and refused to leave anyone for dead, even for their own safety. You could start to see some softening from Fen near the end, so I’m looking forward to more of that. Also can I just say the baby panda was so adorable?! 😆
The plot of this book was fast-paced and gripping. There’s trial after trial. Fight after fight. Hardship after hardship. Mixed in with some humor and occasional slightly fun/relaxing moments. By the end you’re just begging for the characters to get a break. But what do we get?? A FREAKING CLIFFHANGER!! 😭 AGHHH I cannot wait to dive straight into the second book because it’s gonna be EPICCCC!!!! 🤩🤩🤩
If you love unique fantasy worlds with action and adventure, interesting history, clean romance, great characters, an engaging plot, cameos from characters from previous books, cool creatures/monsters, incredible writing, swoony male interests, and everything else you could possibly want, I BEG YOU PLEASE READ PRINCESS OF SHADOWS AND STARLIGHT, as well as the other books in this series because they’re all amazing!!!!! 😆😍🤩
Plot- Loved the setting and the premise for this book. The plot was fine for the most part, and followed their travels through dangerous territory.
I was a little bummed that there were two filler scenes involving another 9-tailed fox (who magically impersonates people while revealing your greatest desire) and another run-in with the fire breathing elk, both adventures of which occurred in previous books in the series. It would have been okay if these scenes had propelled the relationships in this book, but no growth came from these adventures, so it just struck me as repetitive, like “yeah, I’ve been here before.”
Writing - I enjoy this author’s writing.
Characters- These characters started off awesome. I love that we get new characters as the MCs in this book, now that the previous MC’s got their HFN.
This FMC is not your typical, dime a dozen, tough, competent, kick-butt protagonist. She is sheltered and dependent on her warrior guardians. She reminded me of Cinderella’s personality: kind, sweet, mild, willing to please, accommodating, peace maker, service oriented. I actually love this under-represented personality type! There can be great strength and depth in gentle personalities, and this was depicted well. I love to see this character type maintain their strengths while also developing their own true-to-character version of assertiveness and confidence over the course of the novel.
Unfortunately, that character growth never happened! Not even a hint of it! She continued to be timid and submissive and never learned confidence or to stick up for herself, at least not to an appreciable degree. (There was one solitary instance, but she went back to being a shrinking violet the next moment.) Her lack of character development was a big miss, imo.
The male love interest started out as an “enemy” to the FMC, resenting her and not respecting her at all. He was grumpy, cold and brusque with her. I relished the prospect of his inevitable softening towards her during their journey. I expected his disinterest to morph into interest, then attraction, then affection - Flynn Ryder style. But no, that never happened! He continued to be irritable and indifferent the entire time!
What the what?!!! Where is the chemistry? Where is the tension? Where is the softening? Where are the interactions that are precursors to flirting? When does his protectiveness morph from being his job to being something he does out of affection for her?
When he made a tender gesture to her near the end (the one and only time), it was completely out of the blue and completely annoyed the crap out of me. I was like, “No. You do not treat her like baggage this entire time and then think you can touch her gently and use a term of endearment. Just, no.”
Right now I think he’s kind of a jerk, but I’m willing to forgive him in the next book if/when he redeems himself. I haven’t lost all hope. This is supposed to be a romance after all…
As for the other side character, the female guard, she was HORRIBLE the entire time and never stopped bullying the FMC. And yet the FMC was affectionate toward her when she was injured at the end. Sure, help her out and treat her with respect (I get that she has past trauma that makes her mean), but it makes no sense that the FMC would emotionally open herself up to her, seeking friendship and camaraderie from a bully. That makes no sense whatsoever and flies in the face of normal human interaction and dynamics. I just didn’t like it.
Romance- Disappointing and nonexistent. See above. The male love interest has shown zero attraction for the FMC.
Content-
Language- no swearing. Spice- clean; no sex or talk of sex. This installment doesn’t even have kissing. Substance abuse- None. Violence- none Cover- i like it! POV- single POV, third person I think? Cliffhanger- yes Format- audiobook via author’s free YouTube channel Narration- fantastic audio performance!
How I rated the series- #1) Guardian of Talons and Snares - 4 stars #2) Warrior of Blade and Dusk - 4 stars *end of duology, beginning of trilogy* #3) Princess of Shadows and Starlight - 3 stars #4) Captive of Twilight and Treachery - 1.5 stars #5) Daughter of Darkness and Dreams - 1.5 stars
I just keep falling in love more and more with these characters and this world each time a new book comes out. I loved this sweeter enemies to lovers, slow burn romance.
Meiling and Shang's story is very sweet so far. Meiling is the Princess who is known to be cursed, but what people don't know is that she does have powers. One night, she is targeted by brigades, causing her father to send her away to safety with two new graduates. There are many dangers along the way.
Meiling is a sweet, sheltered princess who only wants to learn and help. Shang is a new graduate wielder who is tasked with keeping Meiling safe along this journey with his partner. My heart tugs when Shang defends or blocks the bickering and upset from the partner towards our MC. I loved the sweet moments between the two but wanted to slap him upside the head when he was being rude and mean.
The actions scenes when they are in danger and the depth of the world building just keeps getting better and better with each book. This book really sucked me in from the beginning back into the world of Zheninghai. The cliffhanger left me needing the next book right away. I love Anastasis' writing and can't stop reading her books!
I have loved this author since the first book I read and yet again she didn't disappoint.
My favorite part of this story was it's quick and speedy plot. Many books are either really slow or fast but this one had the perfect combination.
The characters also got my attention. I loved how the the characters had a sense of humor and were also serious enough to be realistic. Also, though it seemed that Meiling didn't have a great relationship with her companions in the beginning, I loved to watch the slow progression of change that happened over time. I can't wait to see how it changes more. Especially after the ending of this book.
The setting as well was fun to see. I have already read her other series and it was awesome to learn more about this world.
Another interesting part of this novel is how it is interconnected with the other series.
While this is book three of the series it takes place before book 1 but it’s important to read books 0-2 first so you have back story and the beautiful world building the Anastasis creates in her books.
We finally get to meet Princess Meiling! The princess is cursed with no magic she is destined to live a life trying to stay out of everyone’s way. However the princesses has a secret which only her parents know and this secret might be her undoing. One night an evanescencer tried to kidnap the princess. In response the emperor secretly has Meiling journey to a fortress for her safety. With only two recent academy graduates as traveling companions through the forest of dragons and a bunch of other creatures that want to kill them, will they get out alive? Will her secret stay hidden?
My third book by Anastasis and I continue to be impressed by her amazing work. The writing continues to be well done, flowing naturally with believable characters and setting. The premise of the novel is unique and well constructed. Plus, my favorite genre is fantasy romance and this fits the bill.
This is another story in the Zheninghai Chronicles, which is an overlapping timeline with the Guardians of Talons and Snares and Warrior of Blade and Dusk. Though I loved those books, this one is absolutely my favorite because of our protagonist, Princess Meiling. She is very introspective, compassionate, earnest, and endearing.
Like the other two books this overlaps with, this takes place in a fantasy world with an Eastern setting. I continue to enjoy the almost boundless types of magic available in the world, and this story did not disappoint by introducing new types of magic. There is a large influence of the natural world and its denizens on the story as well, which are beautifully depicted and terrifying at times.
Like Guardians of Talons and Snares, the romance is not heavily present, but I think the timeline is fitting and it feels like a natural progression of a relationship in the unusual scenario our characters are presented in. What we did see of the romance made me wiggle with excitement, well done and definitely clean. I’m guessing the romance will increase as more of the story unfolds.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Zheninghai Chronicles to readers looking for a beautiful world loaded with fantasy elements, well crafted narrative, and a splash of romance that is certain to be more present as the story progresses. I’m really looking forward to the next in the series because I loved this one.
The story is nice. I love Meilings Power! That is pretty unique and cool!!! It wasn't too fast paced, but also not too slow and I liked that the fmc and mmc didn't fall head over heels for each other. I really appreciate Meiling's effort to be kind, despite Shang's and Fen's disrespectful treatment of her. And that's a big point that has annoyed me sometimes. While I understood their frustration and anger, it wasn't comprehensible how bad they - especially Fen - treated a princess! And just when I was beginning to warm up towards Shang, he found out about Meiling's powers and the way he interrogated and threatened her was cruel, derogatory and patronising. Speaking of patronising, he was just that for most of the time... Another few questions I have; Why was the emperor (yes that cool crown prince from the first book) so stupid and careless to only sent two graduates! on a dangerous mission to bring his daughter to a safe place? Why didn't Mei's parents tell her more about anything??????? Why didn't they train her privately?- after the first book where her father relentlessly (and in secret ) trains her mother, so she can defend herself properly, it simply doesn't make any sense, that he doesn't do the same with Meiling. That is so dumb... For someone who has infinite time to read and educate herself ( being a cursed princess and whatnot), Meiling is extremely naive and oblivious towards the politics in her own homeland, she likes to wallow in self-pity and she doesn't have a backbone -oof that's the most annoying part about her... The panda cub could have been a cute little animal -sort-of-sidekick but it ran off in the middle of the book,so that storyline was just nonsense.. The "character-growth" for Shang and Meiling was subtle but it was there and I liked that. It wasn't forced and unnatural and despite these points I'm optimistic about the next books:)

This story intersects with the previous two. It was interesting to see the crossover even if it was brief.
Meiling was a very different character than we have met with so far. Because of her "curse", her life has forced her to be reserved and quiet while she keeps to the background even while she longs to belong and be seen.
This book mainly focuses on the journey Meiling is forced on with Shang and Fen as her unwilling protectors. I don't understand why Shang and Fen would not have been alerted to the potential threats against Meiling. That seemed like a glaring error. Due to their lack of knowledge, they were not as prepared to handle the attacks when they came.
They also took their frustrations, grudges, and anger at their losses out on Meiling and treated her poorly. Here she is the emperor's daughter and their lives are forfeited if anything happens to her, yet she always came last in their formation. Why wouldn't they have had her in their sights constantly? If the emperor had known their grudges would get in the way of their complete allegiance to Meiling, he would have never picked them.
Meiling is so sweet and considerate. She tries to tune out her companion's barbs at her while offering to help wherever she can. Unfortunately, her protectors see her as an unwanted burden and her efforts as lacking. Slowly Shang starts paying closer attention and realizes there is not only more to their journey but more to Meiling. We start to see glimpses of Shang's care for Meiling before he covers it over with a stoic exterior. He may be stern and stoic but at least he tries to be more considerate and protective of Meiling. This grows as their journey progresses.
Overall this story is more about Meiling discovering the nuances of her abilities and finding strength in who she is despite the crippling image she has had to grow up under.
Lots of action and angst between characters in this story. For most of the book Meiling and Shang are at odds but the foundations are starting to be made for something more.
This was a very slow burn, slow to the point where the romance has barely started! Sure, Shang and Meiling seem to favour each other but nothing close to romance lol. Meiling is a very sweet princess who got the short end of the stick with her magic. That is not to say that she's weak but rather she has been sheltered and closed off from the world! I can't wait for this infamous cursed princess who is actually a sweetheart to finally break free and swing her powers left and right! 🔥
Shang is the typical quiet, brooding and mysterious bodyguard who takes his duty very seriously! I keep picturing Shang from Mulan 🤣 I really wanted more romance but alas this was more of a adventure/survival story 😪 And with that cliffhanger ending, my awaited romance story seems quite far away 😢 His powers seem cool though!
I hated Fen, she was too cruel and rude to poor Meiling. Honestly, I was happy she was knocked out for some time coz that brought peace to us all 🤣 You'd think a bodyguard would be kinder to their ward 🙄 Meiling had so much patience, If it were me, I'd just snap 😑
After this series, I may read the prequel coz I'm intrigued to know her parents story as well!!
Also, I haven't read the first 2 books but doesn't seem too connected to this one. Or atleast I hope so🤞
This book was the most imaginative of the series! Princess Meiling is known as the “cursed princess” because unlike the rest of her family, she has no magic. But the secret of her true magic is something her parents have been hiding from the world so that she will not be taken advantage of and enslaved to do the bidding of dark forces. When the palace is infiltrated and Meiling almost falls prey to a kidnapping attempt, her father the Emperor sends her away secretly to the other side of the empire. He commandeers two recent Academy graduates, Fen and Shang, to escort her, trusting that their small party will escape the notice of whatever evil power wants Meiling for its own.
Helpless due to her sheltered palace life, Meiling is distraught to see the disgust that the female shapeshifter Fen has for her. Shang, an ice-wielder, conceals his disdain better, but she can tell that her bodyguards both hate her for pulling them away from their prestigious appointments for this secret mission that will bring them no honor. Meiling works hard to gain their respect, learning to build a fire, mount a horse, and help with her own secret magic.
I loved the way that Meiling and Shang’s relationship developed over the course of this book. I also loved how Meiling did not have to develop into a macho heroine in order to have value. The story ends on a very intense cliffhanger . . .
The slightest of people can still ‘cast the longest of shadows’ We all have our gifts and what we can contribute to the world. Age, gender, nationality, politics, race, size, etc. are of no import as long as we harm none. Our gifts are also a responsibilityy to use rather than to hide. Sometimes, even being a princess is a weapon that must be yielded at times for the greater good.
The author has some sage advice for readers: ‘All magic has its confines.’ ‘Disguise is more than clothes.’ ‘Think twice before testing the patience of a magic-wielder.’
Fave quote: ‘One mind was not made to comprehend another.’ I absolutely cannot fathom being in somebody else’s brain, let alone trying to make sense of their memories. Perhaps our psyches are what make us unique and sharing our innermost core would somehow delete that? Just a thought…
Will Meiling’s secret be her doom? We’ll just have to wait for the upcoming ‘Captive of Twilight and Treachery’ to find out!
Princess Meiling is cursed … or at least, that’s what everyone thinks. When she’s nearly kidnapped, her parents secretly send her away to safety—but her traveling companions are anything but impressed with her and the bad guys are close on their heels. Will she make it to safety—and more importantly, will she ever belong?
First of all, this does end on a cliffhanger so hold off if you hate those! It overlaps in time with the other Zheninghai books, but you can read it on its own, though you’ll get a much fuller picture if you read those as well.
I really enjoyed the previous 2 Zheninghai books, but this one was my favorite. Meiling was relatable in her loneliness and longing, and while we didn’t get much from Shang’s POV I just like him better than Kai from the first books. Gotta love a grumpy warrior. Fen was a literal wildcat and I’d love to read more about her!
Cannot wait for the next book … so hurry up with that please and thanks
Note: I received a copy and this is an honest, voluntary review.
This installment of the Zheninghai Chronicles begins the story of the "cursed" Princess Meiling. This is an enjoyable, easy to read YA story about a princess learning to stand on her own two feet, in WAY less than ideal circumstances. There's also a major (unconventional) cliffhanger ending.
Do you know how mad I was that they didn't send more wielders with Meiling?! It's so unusual to find a book where the characters are truly at a disadvantage. These poor characters are taken to task at every leg of their journey. The romance is super slow burn, but that felt right for the circumstances.
It felt like this book was truly just the opening to Meiling's story, and it took a bit for things to pick up. The ending, though, is amazing. I'm looking forward to the next installment!
I have officially read every book that Anastasis Blythe has published…and I am really sad about that. I love everything she has written, but ‘The Zheninghai Chronicles’ is definitely my favorite. Usually with a series there is a book that I didn’t like in it, but that is not the case with this series. All the books were fantastic, but if I had to choose my favorites, it would be ‘Maiden of Candlelight and Lotuses’ and ‘Daughter of Darkness and Dreams’.
This series is beautifully written with vivid descriptions that made it so easy to completely lose myself in this story. The characters were well developed and I had no trouble connecting with them and rooting for them to succeed. You’ll definitely love this series if you love fantasy full of swoony romance, found family, political intrigue, magic, and non-stop adventure. Once you pick this series up, you won’t want to put it down again. I will definitely be reading ‘The Zheninghai Chronicles’ over and over!
When I say you need to read these books ASAP, I mean it!
This book features a new couple, Meiling and Shang, and guys...my heart 🥺 Seriously this book brought all the emotions on.
Meiling is the daughter of Leina in Maiden of Candlelight and Lotuses. I love how all of these stories are intertwined. It really connects you to the characters in each new book.
Meiling, the supposedly cursed princess holds a deep secret...When that secret and potentially her life are put on the line, she is sent away with two powerful wielders, Hu Fen, and Tan Shangdi.
Their life is forfeit if they fail to bring her to safety until Meiling's parents can secure their kingdom. But when it puts Shang's highly sought-after and hard-earned career on the back burner, he is not too happy about it...and he may have a secret that could destroy her for good.
/ Meiling and Shang are by far my favorite couple from this series, and I just love the character development...my heart is just so full after reading this.
You will not want to miss this amazing story! But start from the beginning and read them all. You will want to, trust me. /

If you love books in general, read these. You need to.
This is one of my favorite Zheninghai Chronicles books so far! I really love our main protagonist, Meiling. I admire her compassion, patience, and enduring spirit. She definitely has some similarities to her mother Liena, one of my other favorite characters in the Zheninghai Universe.
As for other two main characters Shang and Fen,they took awhile to grow on me. I didn't love how they treated Meiling so poorly through most of the book, though I do understand to a point why they did. I'm glad they finally learned to appreciate her strengths and saw the sacrifices she was also making. The budding romance between Meiling and Shang is one I enjoyed and am looking forward to seeing continue.
I am just really enjoying this series! It's definitely bingeable.
Everything about this book is perfect, in my opinion. The pacing, the characters and their strengths and weaknesses, the cameo's of characters from the previous books in this series, the setup for relationships and interactions later, everything! I loved Nianzu in the prequel book, and Kai in Gaurdian and Warrior. But Shang has quickly taken the spot of my favorite MMC in this series! And Meiling is most definitely my favorite FMC! Her desire to hide in the library when she gets overwhelmed is so relatable! Can't wait to read the next book!
This whole series, but especially this book and its sequels, are perfect for anyone who wants slowburn romance, no spice, and wonderful fantasy adventure!
This book was so good💕🤩 Princess Meiling was a princess who always felt like she was born for shadows and when she was seen that way—that was lonely but she wished to see everything and she wanted freedom. After an attempt at her life—she gets her wish but in a roundabout way. She faces challenges and her growth throughout the book is so beautiful and it was beautiful to read about it as well.
I do like Aranya and Kai better but maybe that’ll change in the second book🤞🏻😏.
Great series. I love the differences in the characters. This isn't just a rince and repeat of former couples. They are unique and interact so differently. I don't feel like I'm reading the "same story". Which happens so often in series. *This book is rated PG-13. There is no swearing or spice. There is one mild kiss. There is a lot of bloody violence. It isn't gory or explicit, but it is detailed and all through the story.
So many secrets! I love how the character's journey mirrors the epic adventure of this tale. Every moment seems fraught with life or death struggles and each decision could be the last. I enjoyed this tale in kindle vella and I am enjoying its revised version in this format as well. A good read.
Loved this one! The tension, the characters, (especially the mc), and THE PANDA. there’s a panda! See? Now you need to read this. I felt for the MC right away, I felt sad with her, I felt angry with her, and embarrassed. (Tho I also did enjoy a bit of her embarrassment, sorry Meiling!) The END was soooooo much. SO MUCH. I am SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT ONE!
I love a relatable heroine. Meiling’s thoughtfulness, her care, her patience and selflessness- my heart melts for her. And a little bit, for me too, because if I relate to her and I feel badly for her at the same time, then I also have emotions, struggles, a heart , warranting the care and concern I feel towards a fictional character. This is why I love books.
