Silent Reading #6

Silent Reading Epilogue

Rate this book
Childhood, upbringing, family background, social relations, traumatic experiences…

We keep reviewing and seeking out the motives of criminals, exploring the subtlest emotions driving them. It’s not to put ourselves in their shoes and sympathize, or even forgive them; it’s not to find some reasons to exculpate their crimes; it’s not to kneel down before the so-called “complexity of human nature”; nor to introspect social conflicts, much less to alienate ourselves into monsters.

We just want to have a fair trial – for ourselves and for those who still have hope for the world.

The first couple of "extras" are really the ending of the story proper, followed by six extras.

**some light spoilers**

The main story wraps up well, and the extras provide you with a sense of those minor characters, victims and survivors of the crimes throughout the novel, healing and hopeful for future endeavors. While discussing plans for repurposing the site of a major crime scene, Luo Wenzhou questions why the surviving family members' voted to establish an amusement park of the area. Fei Du offers an insightful message about the tenacity of survivors and moving forward from tragedy:

The existence of hell is an objective reality. If you don't hear it, see it, or think of it, it still won't disappear on its own, not unless you occupy it, rule it, pick up the hoe yourself and plant it full of flowers.

The six extras add so much to the domestic bliss that Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du are finally able to enjoy, as well as giving some information rounding out some minor characters' storylines. Each extra is light and entertaining to read, with plenty of sweet moments between our main characters, their beloved cat (and perhaps even a new family member....)

This is exactly the kind of extra material I'm always looking for with longer danmei series--a further exploration of what the happy couples' life looks like without the obstacles, and a relatively positive, hopeful message about the future to come.

Awww I loved the extras. Although, unlike other books they didn’t really feel like extras, just like loose ends that really did need to be tied up to conclude the series not too abruptly.

About Mo Du as a whole—I really enjoyed it! The plots were interesting and I loved the focus on psychology, which is usually what I’m most interested in. Luo Wenzhou is so different from me that it’s fun and amusing to read about him, I’m gonna miss him. :’) And Fei Du is a really interesting and unique character.

At some points, the narrative did get a little infodumpy, with lots of names and places mentioned, sometimes with characters speaking for almost a whole page at the start of a chapter before you even find out who’s talking and where they are hahaha. I don’t mind that much, but it’s not really my favorite narrative style either. That’s mostly why I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5, and also because I feel satisfied having finished it and probably won’t reread.

Farewell, Mo Du! It’s been fun. :’D

these extras were everything. it filled in the gaps and reminded me exactly why i loved mo du to begin with: these 85 pages far exceeded the last 400 pages/50 chapters for me

i’m going to miss luo wenzhou & fei du & their cat children luo yiguo and fei qian <3 i’m going to miss tao ran. i’m going to miss my girl lang qiao. i’m going to miss xiao haiyang and the bond that all these characters share

despite the flaws and bumps along the way, i still love mo du. i’m so happy these extras gave me exactly what i hoped for.

Thoughts while reading the epilogue:
- Poor Luo Wenzhou, his heart has taken so much stress
- Zhang Donglai is so silly and funny and stupid, I love him
- “She loved you. I love you, too.” Hey, the tears are coming.
- “I wasn’t lying to you.” “Weren’t lying about what?” “In the crematorium waiting room, when I said, ‘Making you happy is the most important thing.’” Hey, my tears won’t stop!! 😄😭
- “I’ll trust you again, even though you have such an unreliable record, and if you hurt me again…It seems I still won’t be able not to love you.” 🥹
- Xiao Haiyang, I’m glad you were able to achieve what you set out to.
- Zhang Donglai….Im not sure whether to feel sorry for him or not.

Final thoughts after the epilogue:
I knew as soon as I’d first heard of the premise of this series that I’d love it. I was far too impatient to wait for Seven Seas’ release, and found it online. I just didn’t realise how MUCH i’d love it. This has very quickly wormed its way into my top favourites list. I’m looking forward to reading all of Priest’s works this year!

Being one of my all time favourite author, Priest has indeed done an excellent job with this book. 5 volumes each built on top of prominent characters from the literary world, it was an amazing physiological thriller.

The crime, the scene, clues and the time up for the entire plot was well done. Brilliantly written.

Silent reading was something I read this unnecessarily 1800 page long book And I loved every page of it. The criminal cases and the thrill when they got some clues or something I felt like I was solving cases with them. This book gave me a new perspective to love, like how in the morning the whole of Sid was worried about finding a little girl and how a wanted criminal of 15 years just slipped up somewhere At the end of the day when they got back home at least for the night it was okay I really feel like this book made me believe that love and the right person really changes everything. And Fei du's character was so complex I felt like even tho he liked to believe that he was okay with the psychological trauma Deep down obviously his trauma effected him a lot But even so he turned out to be such a nice person. Lou wenzhou is so pookie- , I saw a few scenes of jitd and I can totally imagine wenzhou to be that guy. But jitd was weird It could've been better. Anyhow I wanna read more of priests!!
