When an EMP destroys the electrical grid and a family is separated by a massive storm, who will survive?
Consumed by guilt over the accidental death of his daughter’s husband and child, a disabled veteran, John Sheridan leaves Florida and returns to his small town in the Black Hills of South Dakota to finalize the sale of a remote mountain cabin once shared with his wife. With his vision failing he now believes this will be the last time he will see it and get to enjoy the biggest motorcycle rally in the world. But when a dirty-looking local teenage girl seeking safety breaks in, and the power goes out, he learns a disturbing story and must decide whose survival matters more.
Meanwhile, in Florida, his daughter, Laura ignores the evacuation order vowing to find her sole surviving son before a crushing hurricane makes landfall. But when an act of decency at the height of chaos garners unwanted attention, her day is about to get even worse as she finds herself confronted with an even greater threat than the approaching storm.
When The World Turns Dark is a high-octane, post-apocalyptic thriller with flawed characters that explore the world after an electromagnetic pulse knocks out the power when society needs it the most. No lights. No phones. No transportation. This captivating family saga reveals what desperate people could be driven to do to survive at the worst time.

After it Turns Dark Book one. I enjoyed this book. Loved the story and the characters. A hurricane and a EMP. I can’t wait to read the next one and see what happens next.
Surprised by how well written it was. Having read many books about disasters, this was definitely one of the better ones. Very excited for the second book
Characters were engaging and memorable. The 16 year old boy reacted about like I would expect, and the mom/ nurse did too. I liked the premise, but found the idea of an enemy controlling the weather around the world really unlikely.
This is the first book I have read by Jack Hunt and it won't be last. "When The World Turns Dark" is well written and will keep your interests throughout the whole book from the first page to the last. I really enjoyed this book and hope you do too.
The super hurricane was interesting enough, but how there would be so many simultaneous hurricanes in the world, including places like the arctic is not at all clear (nor is there science to explain it). Equally murky is how or why an EMP occurs in the middle of this. Laura is resourceful but has a recalcitrant son who naturally takes off with storm chasers during this huge hurricane. She is pursued by the obligatory, standard issue homicidal maniac. The whole EMP thing takes a back seat to a biker war and sex trafficking conflict in South Dakota. We are told that bikers are saddled with a bad rap as modern day outlaws and then as the story unfolds they proceed to behave as modern day outlaws. John is a good, decent man but drove me crazy with some of his choices. The girl is naturally terrified (and hurt) so you leave her...twice and are surprised that her deviant family tries to grab her? And when will the good guys stop giving bad guys that were former friends a chance to come clean? A guy who is receiving trafficked girls as a hobby is not going to come clean or do anything other than try to eliminate the evidence. So now I need to see Frank get what is coming to him and hope John pulls his head out in the next book.
I’m a sucker for post-apocalyptic stories. When the World Turns Dark is really two stories in one, though interconnected. One scene in Florida, with Laura as the lead character trying to find her son before a massive hurricane hits. All while trying to avoid being killed by a psycho escaped convict trying to kill her. A little predictable, and I found the reason he’s “hunting” her a little lack luster. She reminds him of his ex, so he wants to kill her and her son as he did his ex and own child. The second is set in South Dakota, where John finds Scout (a traumatized 16 year old) had broke into his cabin. She’s on the run from her “religious” family who had tormented and abused her and her siblings. John finds himself trying to defend Scout from being sold by her parents to a sex trafficking motorcycle club. The interconnection comes because John is Laura’s father. Though wildly predictable, still an easy read and entertaining. I found myself rooting for both Laura and Scout as they find their strength to fend off attacks and save themselves from peril. Looking forward to the remaining books in the series. I need to know who’s behind the EMP attack and why they think that the weather phenomena happening is part of a larger plot to attack the US.

This started out fine but lost me when during a Florida hurricane and an emp strike instead of everyone trying to take care of their needs they all run around looking for vengeance from perceived wrongs or just cause their crazy. Most of the targets are from one family in two different locations and by strangers ( what are the odds) with a sad story of loss thrown in for good measure. John and his daughter Laura happen to be the lucky family to be targeted by a crazy killer, a sadistic family of child abusers and a motorcycle gang. Frankly this just became so unbelievable that I skipped a good portion of the middle of the book and went straight to the last few chapters where of course they were still fighting the same enemies. The book tried hard throwing everything at the wall to get the reader interested but for me this was just a mess.
I like the author’s writing style which is why I’m rating it as high as I did. The content however was all over the place. It starts out with a hurricane, then it is multiple hurricanes all over the world, then an EMP happens, then a child disobeying his mom, then a serial killer, then gang affiliation and child trafficking … the list goes on and on. I felt like I got whiplash from how often the plot moved around. It was very intense and the scenes with death or injury were vivid and descriptive, but I felt like there was way too much going on in this book for my liking. I’m going to try reading the second book to see where it goes, but I might have to DNF it if it continues in the way this book did.

What a great book. A hurricane hits Florida followed by an emp.In the middle of all this Laura's son has run away .. She has to fight the storm and an unexpected stalker to reunite with her son . A few hundred miles away her Dad comes across a young girl named Scout who has been beaten and neglected by her parents . In helping Scout he finds himself embroiled in the dark world of human trafficking and biker gangs . This may not end well for either of them . Fast paced plot with lots of twists and turns. Definitely worth reading. Looking forward to the next book.
I really like the premise, and the profile of some of the characters. But the prose is a little clunky. Much of the characters' dialogue mostly reads like its the same person speaking, and I really like writing that tells more of the story through the eyes of the characters and establishes each character's personality through their dialogue. This doesn't do that for me. I also felt that much of the narrative was encumbered with unnecessary adjectives, chosen just in an attempt to be a technically competent writer rather than for their utility to tell the story. I don't think I'm going to read the next book.
What a great book. Huge storms and an EMP. The story line of the characters are very well written, even though there were different groups of people trying to survive the storm each with different stories, I did not get lost as the stories switched between each one. Also, which is unusual for me, I did not have to shout at the book because as certain things were happening, (no spoilers), they did not drag on, no one kept tripping over fresh air or running into something lol, they did what needed to be done. All while fighting through hurricanes, dodging flying signs, psychos, trees and cows.
A murderer on the loose in Florida stalks the nurse that treated him during the beginnings of a hurricane, power is lost, she goes after her errant son. Meanwhile, in South Dakota her father comes home to find a neglected and abused runaway eating cereal in his house. He, too is without power as he battles the aftereffects from a war injury. Great start to a post apocalyptic series, well written and thought out. Can't wait to dive into the next book.
It was a good read with multiple story lines. You can see the set up for the next book. However, the author over uses “bellowed”. Pretty much every character bellows which makes them all the same and lacks some further personality. Shone is also over used. I started to change the words as I was reading because it makes no sense that all the characters “bellow”. I’m sorry but I cannot imagine a young girl having a deep loud roaring sound when their character speaks, editor should have fought this.
First the good. Plenty of action throughout. Weaving multiple plot strands kept it interesting. Now the bad. Opposition to the Leads were poorly developed. The EMP & hurricane were by and large in the background of this story when they, in my opinion, could have been the main opposition to the characters in this story. Opposition behaviors, choices made very little sense to me. I saw now justification for the choices they made, which made them less believable in my eyes. I will not be continuing this series.
Jack Hunt knows how to write, unlike many in this genre. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish this book because it has two plot lines going on - one of which did not interest me at all. I could not care less about the stupid 16 year old boy who runs off during a hurricane to party on the beach. And did the author really have to add a serial killer? As if multiple mega storms, an EMP, and human trafficking is not enough. DNF at Chapter 11
Well researched fast paced story with a long way to go but no cliffhanger at the end of book one. Characters and the situation is now well developed for follow on segments. The human situations are rational and I did not have any " that would never work" moments with the story or the action. I am 82 with 40 years in the military so it really spoils the story for me when the action gets unrealistic. I am starting book 2 now.
I was doing some traveling and decided to read in stead of watching movies on the flight. I am more of a movie person than a reader. This book picked my interest and found it to be a great read. It took me about two days to finish which says a lot as I usually loss interest rather quickly. It was actually hard to put the book down. Excited to continue on two book two.
I read the synopsis several times but didn't get interested in reading this book. Glad I finally did. It is a really good story. A bit different from other apocalypse books. The characters are well developed and interesting. There are a lot of plot twists. The action is constant. I didn't mind reading between the two locations, which is what I thought I would not like, initially. I've read other Jack Hunt series and they never disappoint! This is a good one!
Yes I am aware that this is a simplistic doomsday prepper porn series. I know that the characters are very very stock but I do like that they are exploring an apocalypse that doesn't involve zombies. I also like that the main character is at least partially blind, although I think his traumatic brain injury Diagnosis is a little fraught and quite a McGuffin to include as a major plot point. It's kind of like Tom Clancy except the navy seal operator dudes are all bikers. Which if you ever met a biker is pretty goddamn funny. Let's just say they're not navy seals despite what you might think
When The World Turns Dark is a particularly intense EMP survival thriller. The addition of hurricanes and the Sturgis Rally, in addition to a very determined psychopath to the EMP gives the reader a wild, thrilling experience. The quality of the writing is among the best in the genre, not only defining the characters and vividly setting the scene, but creating a more complex stories for each character than many others. This is the first time I've read anything by Jack Hunt, but now I'm going to read everything he's written! 5/5 stars!
tomrbagwell@gmail.com I liked the book. Characters were believable, and it was well written. The constant switching of perspective was just a bit annoying to me. It was actually handled very well, just one of my personal things. I will definitely be looking for the next one in this series.
Jack Hunt does a good job of creating a believable plot and characters. The dialogue is natural in most cases. The best thing about this book is the understanding that the next world war will be one of several battle fronts, some we have never encountered before. He created one that I haven't read about in this genre in over 30 years! It is worth your time.
This book has alot of characters in multiple locations. It took a minute to adjust to the random switches. I like the idea of the storm plus EMP issue and the plot is interesting enough for me to read the second book. I didn't like how the story took detours that really didn't tie back to a specific character.
Dnf, some ridiculous over the top characters, including a teenage girl raised in captivity who learns about the outside world thru a couple of hours on a phone w limited wifi. Also human traffickers and a random stalker. All too silly, gave up. Prologue was a good start with pilots tracking a storm but all downhill from there. Would not recommend
When I buy a Hunt novel I know what expect; good character development and rational, thought out storylines. He never lets me down...
And, as a retired English teacher, I don't find myself gnashing my teeth over spelling and editing. Sorry...it is 70 years of reading and occasional outrage. Old English teachers never die.
This book kept me reading into the night. It had many angles to follow to hold your interest. It’s interesting reading about things that could happen and how people can survive, especially with so much evil in the world. I’m ordering the second book in this series and excited to read it.
Definitely hard to put down. Even though I first thought the plot was too far fetched, the more I thought about it, maybe not so much. With the selfishness in today's world and the technological developments I could possibly see something like this happening. Can't wait to read next book.
