Medics Paul Adams and Lizzie Jarman are in the process of rebuilding their lives and planning their future when an unexpected opportunity arises for a deployment in the Caribbean. A deployment like neither of them have ever been on before.
Based on board a Royal Fleet Auxiliary hospital ship, the RFA Apollo, Adams, Lizzie, and the rest of the crew are supporting relief efforts during the hurricane season. But the Apollo has a dark history, its reputation as an unlucky ship known only to a few. One of the few is Sub-Lieutenant Rebecca Lewis, a newly graduated naval officer with a score to settle that goes back generations.
To the west of the Apollo’s location, a slow-moving tropical storm is causing a major headache for forecasters. Unknown to the crew of the Apollo, they’re much closer than they realise when it develops into a full-blown hurricane. As the storm bears down on the tiny islands of the Caribbean, the Apollo’s path to safety has precious little margin for error. But Sub-Lieutenant Lewis has other ideas for the ship and all those on board. Including Adams and Lizzie, who are unwilling participants in Lewis’s plan.
As the wind and the seas rise, so does the tension on board the Apollo. Can the ship make it to safety before the hurricane strikes, or will Adams and Lizzie feel its full force?
Nathan Burrows is a writer based in Norfolk in the United Kingdom. His debut novel, Blind Justice, was published in March 2018.
Nathan's a keen reader as well as a writer. He occasionally runs marathons, has a Norwich City football club season ticket, and is the proud part-owner of a Daschund puppy called Bertie.
I’ve read two of this author’s books in the Paul Adams military Thriller series, and the prequel, Officer Down. All were set in Afghanistan, and followed British Air Force operations officer Paul Adams and medic, Sargent Lizzie Jarman on helicopter missions to aid wounded troops.
Sometimes they ended up too close to the action.
Now Paul and Lizzie are aboard the navy ship, Royal Fleet Auxiliary Apollo, hopefully on a relaxing trip to the Caribbean. But the Apollo has a history of tragedy, and a demented crew member aboard out for revenge in two family deaths aboard this ship.
And there’s a hurricane brewing that the Ill fated ship is trying to avoid.
Man Overboard is a completely different setting from the earlier series books, but the author has created here a very compelling and action filled thriller. And the relationship of Paul and Lizzie grows amid the chaos.
