Before becoming a writer, Linsey was an archaeologist who studied shipwrecks in all kinds of water, from the tropics to muddy rivers (and she has a distinct preference for one over the other). After a decade of tromping around in search of old bits of stuff, she settled down to start penning her own adventure novels and is freaking delighted that people seem to like them. Since life is better with a little (or a lot of) magic, she writes urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
This is the second book in the Rebel series and of the Shadow Guild magaseries. Lots of stuff carries over from the first book, so don't bother reading these out of order.
You know what you're getting because you already know the character and setup. So you know the worldbuilding is sloppy but the rest is pretty tight. Okay, the characters are a bit thinner in this one, but I suspect that's because we mostly have Carrow running around with Grey (i.e. the Devil). But the plot is much faster-paced and still held together very well.
So I'm giving this four stars with the caveat that this is very much light entertainment. Which you know, because you read the first book. So there we are.
A note about Chaste: We're still in limbo with will they/won't they. There's a "fated mate" pull there, but I kind of like that they actually respect and care about one another, even if they aren't sure how far to trust it. Still nothing really physical between them except for a bit of biting/blood thing you get with vampires. It isn't really sexualized like you might think it would be, either. So I consider it still pretty chaste.
I am really enjoying this series. I hugely enjoy the characters as they feel grown up and that there's a very distinct chemistry between them. The heroine might not be a warrior woman but she certainly is no coward and has just embraced this newly revealed magical world . Add in the Devil who is struggling with his new found humanity and this relationship is building up to be one that is a delight to read about. I particularly enjoyed the way this previously lonely character now has friends but of course there are also those quite not so taken by the Guilds newest resident but Carrow is a woman of many talents. What really helped me engage with this couple was the dual perspective and it was interesting to read how the Devil was feeling as well as Carrow This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
I’ve been a fan of this author for awhile, and I was eager to start this series. I thought the first book was the best yet, and after reading this second one, it continues the trend of being my favorite series. This one picks up pretty much where the second left off, but Carrow is asked by the Devil for some help. However, there is something deeper going on which she discovers in her investigation. I love Carrow as she’s such a strong character without coming across as being too strong. I love how her magic is changing and I can’t wait to find out what’s going on with her. Add in a very interesting love interest and some great friends and sidekicks, I’m looking forward to many more books. Highly recommend! I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
What about your empire? This is my empire! You could lose your empire! Ugh if someone says EMPIRE one more MFing time in this book series 😤😤
I’ll be honest, I’m not a huge fan of this series. The characters are all kind of boring, the plot isn’t that exciting. This is a SSSLLLOOOOWWW burn insta love/connection kind of book (if that makes sense) and I’m already over both of them. I want her, but I can never have her, but I also won’t just leave her tf alone. He’s so scarwee and stronger than anybody else, I’m too frightened to be with him but I’m DRAWN to him like no other 🤮 I’m probably exaggerating because I vaguely recall reading this trope before and enjoying it. These characters are probably the problem. Yea, it’s definitely the characters. Especially since there’s also the, I have a super amazing awesome power that everyone fears and no one, myself included, understands. I, am not a fan….like a week ago she didn’t know magic exist and now everyone is like omg Carrow you’re so powerful!! Huh? What?! I’m going to stop complaining now or else I’ll never stop rambling. Besides, none of that matters anyway. Since I will be completing the series because I foolishly bought the omnibus 😅 in for a penny….
This book (and I’m thinking this series) is like listening to an older sibling or cousin telling you a story. It’s all kinds of creative and wild but doesn’t take the time to answer all the “why” questions. That can be annoying but you still get caught up in the tale. Not sure how far I’ll go with the series but I picked up the first three so I definitely will be reading one more.
This yet another authorising a few chapters and calling it a book Not a bad story but fairly weak second instalment A pity there are some enjoyable characters but I won't be reading any more
I liked this. Maybe not quite as much as the first, but the world building is interesting and Carrow and Grey have all of the makings of a great slow burn.
It's missing that little extra somwthjng to make it amazing, maybe chemistry between the characters but a enjoyable solid UF read.
Second book and it is even better. Carrow is settling into her new home and role as a magical person. The problem is that she cannot control her magic and it seems to be getting stronger. So, she gets called before the council. Promising to work with Grey to learn to do what is necessary they discover a threat to their city. Carrow, Grey and the 'gang' work frantically to discover the source of the threat. I love the friendships that Carrow is developing and of course the maybe relationship with the dark and mysterious Grey or Devil as he is called by most. This book is full of action and adventure in a unique world of magic. I'm looking forward to the next book.
Absolutely love this series, they fly by and end before I know it and I’m gutted. I love cordelia so much, she should be in the books far more. Carrow and The Devil are great together and I love the fact it’s slow burn, that they haven’t jumped into it by end of book 1 as a lot of series do. Addictive and so much fun. Just wish they were longer.
Just keeps getting more and more interesting. Definitely a slow burn but hopefully it will be worth the wait! Really getting involved in all the main characters!
This is the second book and it's just as light, fun and adventurous as the first. Carrow and Grey are great characters, I really love Carrow. She's managed to get herself some really great friends in her new magical city, each with their own secrets and powers. We have a big baddie running around trying to blow it all up. We get to see Dwarfs in this and their place in the city is pretty damn inventive. So Carrow has now officially, or mostly, set up her new detective practice, or finding things practice or what have you and I'm looking forward to seeing what craziness comes walking into her door, she just seems to be a magnet for it. I really love the authors note at the end of these books explaining the real places she based her magical city on. I went right to Pinterest and it really helped for me to picture it all in my mind. Great read
The Good: Worldbuilding is what kept me going, because I do think you can see the author's passion for it.
The Bad: The romance isn't the best because that same passion isn't present in their relationship. It's a repetitive refrain that doesn't feel like it progresses that much beyond their physical attraction yet strange lack of heat.
The Bottom Line: I want to know more about the world, and I wish the romance was better. The characters need better development and a bit more time spent exploring their emotional connection. It's only ok for me, so far, but I'm going to keep giving it a shot because the worldbuilding intrigues me.
Was awesome defs got better on all accounts. Defs feels centered now and more real since there was more main couple scenes and actual conversations and even romance i enjoyed the more magic threat the more mundane world stuff in the first book wasnt my favourite but it was necessary for the story. Yeah defs epic defs more fantasy elements and romance elements and just ahh love it more exploring of the magic city and its occupants and also the general universes laws and whatnot. Im so pumped for the third book but first im gonna read the deleted scene and hope its juicy af but tbh ill be happy with anything that involves more of these two!!! Wish the books were longer or had more like pause and stillness between action though the dress shop scene was a good start.
After I read the first book, I read another series. As soon as it was finished, I couldn't wait to get back to this author and these books. Once Bitten was fun and I was anxious to see the story develop. Wicked Deal picks right up where the die left off and even introduces new characters.
This is the second adventure in the Shadow Guild series. Carrow has found her home in Guild City a hidden magical city within the heart of London, but in order to be able to remain there, she has to manage two things. First she needs to get her magical signature under control as no supernatural is allowed to remain in the city unless they can hide their signature - the sounds, smells and other senses they give off depending on how strong a supernatural they are. Secondly, Carrow must join a guild to remain.
This isn't something she can choose for herself and when she undergoes the initiation of sorts, she fails and is imprisoned.
Fortunately, the Devil of Darkvale has need of her talents and offers to take Carrow and train her whilst she helps him.
Carrow and the Devil immediately embark on a dangerous mission to try to save Guild City - her home and her friends.
In order to accomplish all of this it is going to take cunning, strength, help from their friends - Cordelia, Carrow's furry familiar - and of course, a little luck.
Will Carrow and the Devil survive and save the city? What about the fact that they are cursed mates? Could they fall for each other simply to fall apart?
As usual Linsey Hall has written a great book. She has sexual tension, danger and camaraderie wrapped up in a Paranormal Romantic Mystery that is enough to get your heart racing several times throughout the book.
The characters are believable, the magical world hidden deep in the heart of London is realistic as are the other places they visit on their adventures.
The fact that Linsey always includes factual history within her books adds to the authenticity and I can guarantee that there is always some aspect of the history she includes that I want to learn more about. How cool to read a fantasy novel and actually learn facts whilst doing so? Pretty awesome if you ask me.
I cannot fault the book. There are a couple of minor errors that I am sure can be corrected and aside from a moment of confusion it does nothing to distract from the story.
Linsey Hall certainly deserves every star I have given and I am looking forward to the next instalment.
Finally, as always, I would like to thank Linsey for her imagination and keeping us readers salivating for the next book.
I am still loving Carrow and the Devil. Their characters are just so fun! However the whole Fated mates made me nervous, I’ve never really liked those stories of insta love we were destined together so I love you automatically. While these two are mates it is completely different then expected in a good way. They are drawn to each other yes, he feels a need to protect her and she wants him. They do not however automatically fall into each other’s arms and pledge undying love. If anything they are wary of it and trying to keep their distance. Seeing them work together, seeing Grey (the Devil) change is a fun ride. Not to mention hot. This book has just a touch of tension and steam and I loved it.
Edit: originally 5 ⭐️ changed to 3 .5⭐️ As stated in the previous book I like the storyline. I however don’t think it’s a 5star book. It’s enjoyable, a quick read and fun but soooo reminiscent of her other books that I look past that.
Wow! Where do I start! This book dragged me into guild city and wouldn't let me go. Even once finished I had to get the next book in this wonderful series. Blew me away when Carrow absorbed the bomb. I can't wait to find out what happens next! This was a great read.
I really enjoyed this second book in this series. This one carries on pretty much where the first one finished.
Carrow is settling into her life in the magical world of Guild City, but her magic is still pretty much unknown and uncontrolled too. She is able to read objects and people to gain information from them, but her power is strong and she is unable to hide her magical signature to show her control of her magic. When a summons to the Guild City council puts her in prison, the Devil of Darkvale comes to her rescue and promises to help her train and control that wild magic of hers in return for a favour.
The favour is simple enough - find out who the mystery man was who attempted to break into the Devil's club and what he wanted. However, her discovery leads both Carrow and Grey aka the Devil around the world and they soon find themselves involved in a plot to destroy Guild City once and for all. They have to stop it from happening to save their lives and those of all in the city.
Carrow's powers are intriguing and seem to be growing more and more, which should not be happening at all. I have a feeling that she is going to be the most powerful supernatural in the city sooner or later and I hope she still uses those powers for good. Her relationship with the Devil is interesting - they both have feelings for each other, but neither of them feel that they are that place where they can talk about them...yet, but I think soon enough they will have that chat! Something has to happen between them if nothing more than they have been declared Cursed Mates, so I really want to see how that pans out!
I love all the secondary characters in this one. The scene building is just amazing too - such descriptive writing that makes you "see" what this city and it's buildings are really like. I really appreciated the author's afterword describing her research into it all as well.
Looking forward to reading more in this series now!
I've only read the first two books about the Shade Guild and I'm hooked. The characters have strong likable personalities that interact well together. Borrow, the main character came into Guild City as a lonely, friendless girl on the run. But she made friends quickly and her actions inspired a strong sense of loyalty in her new friends, Mac ,Eve, and Quinn.
Then there is Devil. He can hardly be called Carrow's friend however, he does play a strong role in her life. Its fun trying to guess just when these two will get together. They are thrown together again and again and the attraction is strong but, both have their reasons for not getting any deeper involved then they already are
Now this could be your average human drama or perhaps a shifter novel or a vampire novel. But it's not. At least not that alone. I failed to mention that Carrie is a clairvoyant. And her friends: Mac is a seer, Eve is a fairy, and Quinn is a shifter. And then there is Devil, a vampire. But not just any vampire.
I don't want to give away all this books secrets. If you want to know more read the books. I promise it's never promise it's never boring. If you like any of the paranormal subs genres I'm sure you'll like these books.
Now, I'm on to the third book in this series. I plan to read the whole series before I move on. Oh, by the way, My say Hall has some other books out there too you might want to try. Just look up her author page to get the list.
This had the potential to be better than the first book because the world was already established, but it really didn’t do it for me.
The writing feels really repetitive (ex. Grey always rubbing his chest, magic being described as prickling, Carrow talking about how her new home is so different from the human world, etc), which I feel may be used as a tool to more clearly define the different character ‘voices’, except their voices didn’t seem that distinct, especially in more action focused scenes. There are also some really weird analogies throughout.
It’s also strange because the romance seems very stunted. I barely know how to describe it. I understand that it’s meant to be a slow burn and that there’s some mutual pining involved, but I don’t need to hear about Grey’s protectiveness on every page, or about how Carrow can’t stay away from him. It’s just repeated over and over. When the romance isn’t delivering soft moments between the characters/real relationship development, you need a strong plot to prop up the story, and this book didn’t have either.
The romance feels like it’s being dragged out in five books (it honestly could be less) and because of that, the plot is suffering. The villain wasn’t really compelling, and even though we were briefly told his motives, it felt really cartoonish. It seemed like a very similar ending to the last book. Like if you held both in front of me a week after I finished reading, I’d barely be able to identify which ending came from which book.
Carrow is settling in to Guild City nicely. She really feels like she is fitting in. She is with Eve and Mac when the Devil comes calling. He wants to hire for a job. She decides she can't risk being close to him, so she refuses. When he leaves the Council sent people for her. She has no choice but to go. They put her through tests, her magic is to powerful. They put her in jail, until they can decide what to do with her. Devil makes a deal with Council, he gets her out. He will help her control her magic, she will read the guy that he wanted. She reads the guy and finds out this bigger than just petty theft. Someone is planning on blowing up Guild City. They only have three days to get the information they need to stop it. Carrow learns more about the Devil, she is still drawn to him. She just doesn't realize he feels the same.
There is alot to this story that I didn't write as I don't want to spoil it. This book was beyond good. The author draws you in the story immediately. You will not stop reading until the last page is done and still want more. These characters are so good, love the dynamic between Carrow and Devil. Can't wait to find out just what Cursed Mates mean for them.
I received an ARC copy of this book, this is my honest opinion
