Sherlock fan here. I like the films. I like the TV shows. I like the literature. The eccentric Sherlock with his brilliant deductive skills are my cup of green tea. This book references the classic but puts a twist on the narrative using Irene Adler's voice to frame the story rather than Dr. Watson's. Irene was Sherlock's only love interest in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "A Scandal in Bohemia"; hence, when Irene claims to be Sherlock's only girlfriend she is referring to when they were adults in the original classic. This story isn't a romance, although the boys are intrigued by the unconventional Irene. The focus is on the developing friendship of Irene, Sherlock, and Lupin; three teenagers solving a murder mystery. The first person point of view makes it easy to understand and the Victorian illustrations and backdrop add flavor to the setting. Suspense abounds in this fast read.

American Irene Adler is on vacation in Saint-Malo, France when she meets Sherlock Holmes. She is stifled by the Victorian rules regarding female behavior and it makes her rebellious. This might get lost on the reader as the author doesn't go into depth but only mentions it in the first chapter that frames the story. Irene just thinks about how the butler is telling her to be like a lady and later we see that she does not get along with her mother. Irene consistently bucks conventions saddled on women as the boys don't expect her to do anything dangerous or throw any punches. She surprises them in many different situations and exposes her untraditional ways.

Sherlock and Irene immediately have a battle of wits before she convinces him to help her escape from the Butler that is looking for her. A juggernaut of adventures ensue that made me read the whole book in two hours. Their escape takes them to a boat owned by Sherlock's friend, Arsene Lupin, and the three flee to an empty mansion. All three use the place for a break from the pressures at home and to be independent. On the way back they find a dead man on the beach with a note in his pocket and follow the clue. The two boys try to protect Irene but soon find out that she is perfectly capable of protecting herself. Or her butler is. They invite her over for boxing lessons showing how they view her as an equal. This is quite progressive for Victorian times and the spunky Irene enjoys the freedom. The twists and turns of the mystery had me baffled and the resolution was satisfying.

Irene's parents do not get along particularly well and we discover that Irene adores her father and resents the substitute butler at times even though he genuinely cares for her. After he gets her out of some scrapes and she calls him by his first name, she shows a slow maturation as her respect for him grows and she realizes that he does care for her. She does not understand her mother's lack of intellectual curiosity and later we learn that she is an orphan. She's punished for her impulsive behavior, but it has no effect on her because she doesn't value her mother's opinion and her curiosity for the world overrides her fear of authority. She's not going to be a Victorian woman that is happy in the domestic sphere. She's a feisty intellectual that is rebellious and has power struggles with her mother and butler. While the butler makes some inroads with connecting with her, the mother does not. The father making faces in boring social arrangements setup by the wife shows a certain disrespect to his wife and encourages Irene in her rebellious actions. He models some of the behavior seen in Irene. This dynamic makes for an authentic family and great discussions.

If you like middle grade murder mysteries try, "Three Times Lucky" and "The Dead Man in Indian Creek." If you want twists on the Sherlock Holmes classics try: "The Case of the Missing Marquess" (Enola Holmes Mysteries #1) by Nancy Springer or "The 100-Year-Old Secret" (The Sherlock Files #1) by Tracy Barrett.

This is a middle-grade book so I'm obviously not the target audience.

Also, this could be considered "historical" however it's not really an issue when reading the story.

For fans of any Sherlock Holmes incarnations, this is a fast-paced junior sleuthing origin story involving Holmes, Adler & Lupin. Their first meeting through their first "case". There's many twists and turns especially one you aren't even looking for at the end. The summer setting in Saint-Malo was a welcome break to my real life post-Artic shenanigans. Told by the perspective of a pre-teen Irene Adler, very precocious and headstrong, there's hints of the person she will grow to be in the books, TV shows and movies. She also shares insight into Holmes and Lupin. A very fun time reading to be had for some light hearted intrigue if you're in a slump or coming off of reading something heady. I may just continue the series.

Rilettura 2025

Piacevole ritrovare in formato giovanile Lupin, Sherlock e Irene Adler.

While part of the fun of this book is the knowledge that its very existence would have tickled Lupin author Maurice LeBlanc and really ticked off Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, it's also just a fun read in and of itself. The characters are all recognizable both as who they will become as adults and as their own people, and we can really see Sherlock and Irene's adult relationship foreshadowed nicely. The mystery isn't amazing, but it's solid middle grade writing (even more impressive when you factor in its translation from Italian), and while I can't quite see how this would work if you didn't know the characters beforehand, it's certainly a good addition to the body of works featuring the characters.

I also admit to wanting to assume this takes place in the same world as The Empire of Corpses, which does great things for John Watson's backstory. It doesn't really work, so I'll just pretend.

I know this is a young adults book however I found it a really quirky story and I loved it. My granddaughter lent it to me and I'm so glad she did. It is nice to read a book that you can see what happened through children's view point ! Can't wait to read the next book

A young girl, Irene Adler, is on summer vacation in Saint-Malo in 1870. With not much to do and a lot of adventure in her spirit, she comes across William Sherlock Holmes, who introduces her to his friend Arsene Lupin. The three quickly get caught up in a murder case when they find a dead body on the shore. The police aren't having much luck in figuring out who the dead man is, let alone what happened to him. Thankfully the three young friends are also quite great detectives. Will they be able to solve the case?

This is a fun new series for middle readers. The publisher recommends ages 9-13, and I agree. It will appeal to the older kids who know who Sherlock is, but the story itself stands alone as a good mystery. Even if the reader figures out part of what is going on, I am sure the ending will still be a surprise. I love mysteries. I am not the best at solving them, so the fact that I didn't figure it out doesn't mean that no one will, but I still think it was a good surprise ending.

The author, Irene Adler, is actually Sherlock's love interest. I do not know the whole back story behind this, but it has definitely made me want to look into it. The history, the mystery, and the characters will draw the young readers in. I am definitely looking forward to more from this series.

This was so cool. It's so interesting to see Sherlock as just a regular guy. I love the relationship between the trio and how protective Sherlock and Lupin are over Irene. I also love the relationship between Irene and her father. The ending was a perfect surprise and it was interesting how everything came together.

I can't wait to read the other books!!

Once upon a time Sherlock Holmes, Arsène Lupin and Irene Adler were children (you heard me right!). Once upon a time they were little hooligans turned accidental detectives.

While vacationing in a sleepy little French town Irene Adler makes the acquaintance of Sherlock and Lupin and the three immediately strike up a friendship. One day they happen across a corpse of a stranger that is supposedly the product of a suicide. But it doesn't quite fit and very soon the trio have embarked on an investigation that will lead them through a gang of hoodlums and criminal underworld. In the course of their adventure they must discover the identity of the corpse and the reasons for his death as well as the identity of the shadowy figure, "the dark lady", who witnessed the three children discover the body.

Ten or so years ago action-packed The Dark Lady would have left me drooling over the storyline and eagerly awaiting the second installment. Since then my reading habits have matured, but as this book is marketed towards younger readers I shall try to review with this in mind. When I seen this book I knew I had to read it. As a long-time Sherlock Holmes fan with plans to read the Arsène Lupin stories some day I thought this looked like a fun read. And with a few exceptions it is just that.

The Dark Lady was brimming with adventure that will leave children craving for more. The mystery isn't too heavy so for children who want to get into Sherlock Holmes but might find the mystery aspect of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories too advanced this is just the thing to give them.

Now for the aforementioned exceptions: What was rather annoying was the farcical dialogue compounded with an event or two that really didn't impact the story. Perhaps the events created a few thrillers but it wasn't really relevant to the story. I was not emotionally engaged with the characters which is something I always hope for in a story. Irene Adler is a selfish ninny intent on proving herself whether she is in the wrong or the right. Deception is complimented, encouraged even. Disrespect of parents (i.e. mother) is something Irene is very good at. When such elements are taken into account this isn't a very wholesome book to be handing over to children; not if honesty and respect are to be instilled. Entertainment-wise it would be a good book for children. Similar to The Boxcar Children but with characters people have loved for more than a century.

On another note I found the formatting of the ebook to be first-rate. One of the best I've seen in my experience with various ebooks that I have borrowed and own.

DISCLAIMER: In accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255: “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising” we would like to note that we received an electronic copy of “"The Dark Lady” from NetGalley.com provided by the publishers, Capstone Young Readers, in exchange for our honest review.

I have sooo many thoughts.
First of all, this is the second time I read this book. And when I'd first picked it up, I was little and there were many things I didn't understand. And I go and start it over now and I understand and remember everything, and I even drew a diagram and stuff, and so I thought wow, I really did get more clever. I was wrong. I didn't get what happened with the card. For crying out loud, these are twelve year olds! And they solved a whole mystery! But anyway, my thoughts. Lupin. Ahhh. I love him. He's amazing. The thing is, that because I've read the books before, I read something and another scene comes into my mind, and alters the way I view the characters. However. Lupin is amazing and perfect and a gentleman and hot. And speak french! That Mon Dieu! killed me. I literally died dead. And he cares for Irene so damn much! How many times did he protect her, or distract her when she needed that, or make her laugh or even just be kind to her? Though he's still a what, thirteen, fourteen year old boy? So he's got some negative characteristics, but he's a fictional character, so I'm willing to ignore them, especially because he them grows up and gets even more amazing (for the most part, but still). And Sherlock. I didn't even want to count Sherlock (or should I say William 😭) as a crush, but this reread made me seriously change my mind. He is a boxer, a middle child, a genius and someone who was forced to grow up alone and too quickly without the love of his own family (except for his sister, but she is jealous of Irene, so)! I mean, what's not to like? That hug in the alley way altered my brain chemistry and I am not even kidding. 🎶Just two kids, you and I, oh my my my my🎶 And the scene on the rooftops? Even more perfect! And the scene where they met! The thing is, I am sure these books shouldn't be characterised as romance, but my hopeless romantic sould can't help itself. Now, moving on to the root of the problem, drumroll please, Irene! I hate her so much for what she's done, but in this book she's just so pure and cute and doesn't know anything about her life that you simply can't hate on her. I mean, she has the attitude, but okay. She's confident and knows what she's worth. So it's fine. For now. Her father is Amazing. And Mister Nelson has a special place in my heart. He deserves the world and loves Irene more than anybody else in that life, and he's gone so beyond his duties for her. 🛐 Iconic.
And just one last thing I'd like to add: the singing scene. If you know you know. The scream I scrumpt.

My rating 3.5/5

Salah satu dari sekian banyak spin-off kisah Sherlock Holmes.

Mi piacciono molto i personaggi.

This was a lot of fun! In the last few years I really grew to like historical mysteries written for middle grade readers, so I was excited to pick up this one, not to mention I already know that Pierdomenico Baccalario writes fun books :)

I liked the idea of Irene Adler, Sherlock and Arsene Lupin meeting as kids and it was interesting to see their interactions. The mystery plotline wasn't very complex, but it was engaging enough for a middle grade story and made me want to pick up next book in the series.
