Gui’s the best friend I ever had. I love him like a brother, too bad I’m falling for his little brother.Jude is a walking talking temptation, everything I never let myself want. He’s sweet as chocolate, wickedly funny, and he gets me. The sex, well, it’s worth a repeat and that’s something I never do.When he visited Gui, I thought I could settle for a one night stand, but then Jude moves to my city to work at my studio. Gui gets him to join my gaming group and suddenly he’s all I see. Now Jude’s looking at me with hearts in his eyes and I’m terrified that I’m going to break his heart.Charisma Check is the second M/M romance in the Table Topped series. It features Jude, a hopeless romantic with diabetes who makes animation and Theo, a commitment-phobic trans man with depression who runs table top games for his for severe depression, gender dysphoria, mention of past suicidality, surgical recovery, injection medications/needles (insulin dependent diabetes)
**4.5** Charisma Check is a wonderful second boom in the Table Top series. This follows Theo, relationship phobe, and Jude, hopeless romantic, as they try to go from one night only to the tentative possibility of more but Theo ensures Jude is going in eyes wide open regarding his own history with relationships and mental health. This story has a great balance of sweet, fun, endearing and hot moments but bringing it back down with periods of depression, low moments in their pasts and the never ending cycle of thoughts that Theo deals with from his dysphoria. They also have to deal with Gui who is Jude's older brother of sorts and Theo's best friend so knows them both extremely well. He's overprotective of Jude and knows how much of a player Theo has been in recent years so doesn't get off to the best start when the two men decide to at least try for something. It's also entertaining how much the group get into their table top gaming! As well as being a sweet story of acceptance, love and care, it's also interesting to me in learning more of the journey that a trans person goes through, mentally and physically. I'm totally in love with Theo's family and their friend/work/game group who are so supportive and caring towards him during the highs and lows. Definitely a recommended read for me and I'm looking forward to who comes next in the series. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
sweet and sexy... dark and horrible... some parts of this made me smile and happy.. other parts i wanted to throw my kindle and made me so mad.. it was interesting and well written.. and i cant wait to read more.
This marvelous gem was a fresh, poignant, grab-you-by-the-feels, fantastic, fascinating, amazing, tug-at-your-heartstrings, intriguing, and totally awesome addition to this amazing series.
Can you just look at Theo and feel your heart melt? He might be exactly my type. I couldn’t help but see my own partner in him. They are both loud, colorful, in your face queer, and have some trauma. They are also generally toppy, have a sweet tooth, and might have an oral fixation. I can keep going, but I doubt anyone wants that graphic of a description of my love life.
So Theo has my heart. Seeing him deal with his emotions and realize that maybe he is worthy of love and is allowed to have it just was perfection. Watching the ways he distanced himself to protect himself and others was heartbreaking. Even his mother called him out on it, which I must say I love his family. Watching Theo grow and deal with a lot of stuff was so wonderful. Watching his dysphoria which is so like my own in a lot of ways was both incredibly difficult and affirming. I am really envious of one of his final plots. I wish I would have a similar plot in my life, I know my partner would be even more hands on than Jude was.
Jude is just so special. He is younger, dealing with a lot, and he is such a romantic. I wanted to shake him. I worried so much about him when he started chasing Theo. Every single time Gui said something I was ready to shake Jude until he listened to Gui. Protect your heart before Theo stomps on it while refusing to deal with his issues! BAH!
The reason this is not a five star book is Theo. Theo sleeps around a lot (not the issue), but he seems lax on condom use for oral sex. This means he is at a high risk for STIs. He talks about needing to be tested, but the testing isn’t mentioned again. There is then oral sex without a barrier multiple times in the book. I would expect Theo would be better about condom use. It felt like a deviation from what I would expect from the character and made me worry even more about both of the men.
I was really into this book if you couldn’t tell. I am more than ready for more. Good thing book three is up for pre-order. Book four is being written. Silver gives little sneak peaks in his fan group on Facebook. So I know there won’t be a long wait before I am able to read more about these friends.
Gui’s the best friend that Theo had ever had and he loves him like a brother. However, he is falling for his little brother Jude, a walking, talking temptation, everything he never lets himself want. He’s sweet as chocolate, wickedly funny, and he gets Theo. The sex, well, it’s worth a repeat, and that’s something he never does. When Jude visited Gui for the holidays, Theo thought he could settle for a one-night stand, but then Jude moved to the city to work at the same studio. Gui gets him to join their gaming group and suddenly he’s all Theo can see. Now Jude’s looking at him with hearts in his eyes, and Theo is terrified that he will break his heart.
I enjoyed this story with Theo with his many problems and Jude with just one problem and a heart big enough for them both. I loved how well Jude managed Theo's problems and that he proved that nothing was too difficult with love and a determination to handle things. They made a sweet couple. Easy to read, feel and understand there were a lot of thoughts and feelings in this story. This is an MM story with mature content.
Well written, sensitive read! We get a hopeless romantic (best friend’s younger brother) and major player with basically a one night to forever vibes. There are lots of open well communicated sexy scenes. Lots of flirting ;).
Dual pov which helps us dive into the minds of both MCs. Jude shows up, supports, loves, shows how he handles the care and consistency of having diabetes through monitoring and needles/treatments, he’s open and honest. Theo is a trans man, the player, who finds himself ready and willing to open up to Jude, to trust not only his heart but his mind as well as he has bouts of depression and dysphoria, he’s loyal, boisterous and charismatic.
They are amazing together. There are so many feels throughout this story from happy and sexy to bedridden and depressed. All of it written realistically and sensitively. Recommend!
I loved this second installment of the Table Topped series. I loved the sensitive nature that the author took in dealing with Theo's body dysphoria and depression as well as Jude's diabetes. They were all handled with great care and in a realistic light. I thought that it was great that Theo was finally able to trust someone with his heart and Jude was perfect for him. I really loved the character growth, mostly from Theo but also some from Jude. I really enjoyed seeing the RPG more this book and seeing everyone get into the game, and Theo's elaborate storylines for it. The scenes were varied and steamy. I can't wait to sink my teeth into the next book. I would definitely recommend this book.
This is a m/m romance with a trans main character. I started this book right after finishing book 1, not even bothering to read the book details because, Hello, D&D themed fiction is awesome! I don’t have personal experience as a trans person but this book was written in such a beautifully vulnerable way that it feels real and personal. I am so glad this author gave this story the pages this story needed to tell about the journey of this relationship(my complaint about book 1 was that it was too short). I love the energy and personality of Theo and the sweetness of Jude.
This book was so delightfully nerdy and queer. I loved how there were several chapters of their D&D campaign. This was one of the few mlm books I've read with trans rep that felt realistic and I appreciated that Theo wasn't just a character that was trans and he had a beautiful journey. We love books that have queer rep that aren't about suffering for once. And I loved how Jude had a chronic illness that was shown throughout but again that wasn't all he was. Definitely looking forward to the next book in this serious!
It won't be for some but I really enjoyed the medical information and experience from both Theo and Jude, it made them seem really real. The way Theo's dysphoria and depression was handled was good. It was actually the gaming stuff that didn't interest me too much. The relationship seemed superficial at times, Theo took a lot from it and Jude seemed a bit of a doormat. The end was really sweet and I was happy for Theo that it all worked out
I loved the dynamic characters and the way the author wrote Theo and his trans experience. Jude has such a big heart and is perfect for Theo. While I was lots in the table top game parts I enjoyed the heart of the story and look forward to more authentic and diverse stories from this loveable found family.
I really enjoyed this much more flushed out story in this series. Theo just doesn't think anyone can love him enough to stick around through his lows, not just when he is happy and go lucky. Jude is living in a new country with only his brother’s friends that he knows but wants to get to know Theo more but has to convince him that he won't run. Both of these men have something they think will make someone turn their backs on them but it made their connection even stronger. It was nice to read about Theo's transition and how much of a struggle it can be but he is very lucky to have a family and friends that have stuck by his side.
I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review
Many authors get it wrong when it comes to trans characters. Silver gets it right. Everything is done perfectly. Overall this is an amazing story to boot. I'm in love with this series and looking forward to more of Silver's work
I really enjoyed Theo and Jude’s book. Not only is Jude such a sweetheart you can’t help but fall for him, but you get the lovely opposite in Theo’s loud, brash behavior that belies the sensitive soul within. Throw in some geeky board games and queer supportive friends, and I’m all in!
Charisma Check is the second book in the Table Topped series by Alex Silver. It's easily read as a standalone. I was immediately drawn into this story.
This is a best friend's brother's romance, as Theo is attracted to his best friend's younger brother Jude.
I appreciate the layers of these characters. Theo's a trans man and I love the way his packer issues and sexual experiences are handled. It's nothing heavy, but well representative of his needs and gender dysphoria. All of this is written in a fabulous manner, with knowledge and care. I appreciate it all.
A large part of their tale is the conflict of Theo's intentions. He's always been one who can't commit, but he finds himself not wanting anyone else either. His backstory is well explored, with his fear and pain well explored. I love it.
As for Jude, he's a diabetic who issues with his health are well illustrated. I appreciate the way the author not only has the character talk about it, but also shows the steps he needs to take when dealing with his health. It's extremely well written.
I expected this book to be super short like Roll For Initiative, but this one is much longer, at 178 pages. Thus it's much more detailed and the author has a chance to add a lot of depth to the story, which is great.
As with the first book, there's plenty of gaming conversations, which again bored the hell out of me, but it's easy enough to skim over those parts.
This is a story of two men who fight their feelings along the way. Two men who are terrified of being vulnerable and letting themselves fall in love. Two men who can't stop themselves from opening their hearts and letting the other in.
In the end, I love Charisma Check. Alex Silver delivers with an emotional and deep read. This tale of two men who have had relationship issues in the past, finding love and strength with one another, is beautiful.
I fell in love with Theo during Roll for Initiative, Gui and Paz’s story. He was Gui’s trans best friend who was very loud, proud, and unashamed. Here we get to see his darker side; what makes him the way he is always being a manwhore and never hooking up with anyone twice. Jude is Gui’s brother and is constantly having to try and reign in his brother’s protective instincts. This book is about Jude breaking down Theo’s defenses and helping him realize that the right person will be there through everything, no matter what. This was just such a good book. These characters are so well written. The Table-Topped series is not my first set of books by Alex Silver. This author has such a gift for writing your less traditional characters, especially those who are trans. There aren’t many authors that write about these lesser touched upon members of the LBQT+ community, at least not that I have discovered so far. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!!
I really enjoyed reading Charisma Check by Alex Silver. It's the second book in the Table Topped series. The book reminds me of the Big Bang Theory with its geeky role-playing friends. I loved Jude and Theo. I also enjoyed that Theo is a trans guy and that he is past the first stages of his transition with top surgery already done and is getting ready for the first part of his bottom surgery. Most books that I've read with a trans guy never get to bottom surgery before the book is over, and I enjoyed learning about it and how far doctors have come in the medical procedures. I also enjoyed that they got together and played games. It brought back memories of playing Dungeons and Dragons back in the day. If you like adorkable and realistic characters with everyday realistic issues and problems, this book is for you. I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Wow. This story deals with a whole bunch of tough/touchy subject matter, pulls at your emoitions hard. These topics are dealt with in a tactful yet honest way, with heart, humor, and honesty. Honestly, I didn't think I'd become a fan of Theo, even though I understood that there was deep pain & depression behind it/because of it. Once he met & started having feelings for Jude, though, he really grew on me, and my heart felt for him fast & hard. Jude had his own battles & baggage, but dealt with it in a much healthier way. Loved him from the jump! These two together - so romantic, so special. Loved the RPG aspect (though I'm clueless on all of that) even so, it was fun and interesting. Very good addition to the series. The only critique I have is that it took me a while to get really into it, at first. And at one point, the past-Theo & future-Theo thing was a bit much for my taste, but it didn't take anything away from the flow or telling of the tale. Really loved the ending!
I went into this book with no real expectations. The previous book had been too short for effective relationship development, imho, and had lacked the DnD energy I'd been hoping for. So I was pleasantly surprised because this has both of these in spades. There are chapters devoted to game play and set up, which also lead into relationship development but even out of the game the author does a great job of moving this couple on from one time only hook-up to long term boyfriends. Shifting Theo from a player to boyfriend material was believable without resorting to any huge medical drama (with Jude). Theo's dysphoria really struck a chord and while I know everyone is different, the reactions and yo-yoing emotions felt genuine. This series has a very diverse cast of characters. Fun read. Surprisingly low angst considering some of the subject matter. #bestfriend'sbrother #transmc #diabetes #tamingaplayer #gamers #roleplay (hah, not like that) #bodydysphoria
Gui is in a difficult situation. He is Theo's best friend. He is Jude's older brother. He is living with his boyfriend. But he is trying to protect Jude from Theo who avoids relationships and Jude is a romantic.
When Jude comes to work in the same company as Theo and Gui they're constantly thrown together. And Gui knows it because Jude lives with him too.
How can an older brother back off and hope for the best? He has to take a leap of faith that they'll end up in love, like he has. But is that leap just too far to make safely.
Step up and enjoy this sweet romance with a trans character going through surgery. Another trying to manage his diabetes. Let's see who's the strongest man of all! And enjoy their love and passion.
I’m the first to admit to being a sucker for a “best friends’ brother {or dad}” story!!
It took me a while to enjoy this one, but I really did. Theo is a super out there, OTT, charismatic person ... with a lot of issues. However, the things he is dealing with {ᒪOOK ᗰᗩ, ᑎO ꌚᑭOIᒪᗴᖇꌚ} aren’t explained until we’ll into the story. And then we understand Theo!! Jude is just the sweetest thing ever, you can’t help but adore him. He really is a fantastic counterpart to Theo. The gaming components completely threw me, because I’m absolutely NOT a gamer. But I enjoyed how that element was worked into the entire story, not just the gaming scenes.
This second volume in the series is much more serious than the first volume. The author has tackled some heavy issues here in chronic illness, gender dysphoria, depression, past suicidal thoughts and other topics. Thank goodness the author is up to handling all these things in an intelligent and sensitive manner. They could so easily have been mishandled or just all tacked on without any sensitivity. Here, they make the characters real and made the story one I could not put down. This is also an author who is great at giving some favorite tropes a fresh spin and the best friend's brother trope was wonderful here.
Theo is a trans man who doesn't do relationships, he struggles with dysmorphia and depression and has had suicidal thoughts. The only person he'd been in a relationship with hadn't been able to cope with his issues and he hadn't tried again. When his best friend Gui's younger brother came to stay they'd spent a night together and now that Jude had got a job with them and was going to be living at Gui's Theo didn't know what he was going to do, he didn't do relationships and Jude was a hearts and flowers romantic. I enjoyed this the second book on the series, much more detail given and the story felt more complete.
Oh my stars this was good. Even though I thought I an idea of the struggles these characters, especially Theo, face I didn’t until I read this. So many times I wanted to hug him and the tears, so much crying. The thought of those I know struggling and in pain with no way to help by support them isn’t one tenth of what they go through. And Jude. So steady and strong even when it may hurt him. Love these guys so much.
Theo and Jude are an unexpected treat, they are so lovely together despite obstacles they have to overcome. Theo's dysphoria and depression is really taking a roll for him and it made me feel so sad for his struggles but it was dealt with sensitively. Jude maybe young but he knows what he wants and is determined to get it. Both guys were just adorable and positively geeky, I was applauding the ending and really happy with how things played out.
This is the second book in The Table Topped Series. A fascinating book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters interesting. The characters were developed and thought out. Jude and Theo are the MC’s of this book. I can recommend this as a good read. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
A cute read in this series, I really wanted more of these characters and this book did a great job with that. It had a bit more gaming/roleplay/board game information than I enjoyed but for someone who LOVES gaming they would probably appreciate it more than I did. Overall a good read, the second half of this book saved it for me. I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my review.
