Skye MacKinnon is a USA Today & International Bestselling Author whose books are filled with strong heroines who don't have to choose.

She embraces her Scottishness with fantastical Scottish settings and a dash of mythology, no matter if she's writing about Celtic gods, cat shifters, or the streets of Edinburgh.

When she's not typing away at her favourite cafe, Skye loves dried mango, as much exotic tea as she can squeeze into her cupboards, and being covered in pet hair by her tiny black cat (who's secretly a demon).

This is one of those reviews that makes me so glad that my mother and all of my close relatives are not on this site. I am going to have to say some things that are ridiculously inappropriate and would probably cause her to call up some sort of intervention.

"Honey, we are concerned about some of the stuff you are reading. It seems like trash."

Well mother, that's because it is.

Now don't get me wrong, I love some trash. Some of it can be quite entertaining, like watching cheesy Hallmark movies at Christmas in a significantly less wholesome way. You know the heroine is going to end up getting it on with whatever other character is there and you know how it is going to end but you still indulge anyways because awww why the hell not?

This was not that kind of trash. This was not well thought out or presented in a way where I actually liked all of the characters...really any of the characters involved. I mean, you should at least like one of the characters, right?

But no. They were all sadly silly and vain and shallow and I just can't get on board with that.

So up first to bat is our Mary Sue, Macey.

She's beautiful. Flawless. Sexy but never been touched. Oh yeah, and she's a kelpie princess. Do you know what a kelpie looks like in mythology? They aren't pretty. They aren't majestic. They are frightening as fuck.

But yeah so we have this perfect pretty little princess who lives on land with her two stereotypically stupid older brother and she is all alone because normal humans aren't interesting enough for her and neither are kelpies. Oh what is a girl to do?

Get kidnapped apparently.

By two wraiths and an incubus.

Which she finds incredibly sexy and is ready to jump their bones pretty much the moment she meets them.

My biggest problem with this book is the single minded nature of our little Mary Sue. Does she want to protect her family? Does she want to save the world?

Nope.

She wants the D.

Every few paragraphs is something else about being all hot and bothered for these dudes. This is a young sexually inexperienced girl and all she is thinking about is being naked for them. And the world is helping her by putting her in skimpy outfits and close quarters.

She goes from zero to gang bang in a matter of a couple of chapters which is all a bit too much. You have underwritten poorly developed characters that just want to bump uglies with each other. This isn't a novel. This is just pure erotica. This is plot-what-plot vehicle-for-sex trash.

Which is fine, if it is well done.

This sadly was not.

From the deep is a mythical adventure story with heated scenes. This is Scottish mythology with an incubus and two wraiths.

Macey is a Kelpie princess who hasn’t come into her powers yet. She lives on the land with her brothers. She’s kidnapped but all isn’t as it seems. Seven wardens are supposed to save the world, but what if they aren’t the first to answer the call. Macey needs to risk more than her heart in order to fulfil her destiny. Her mythical kidnappers hold the key to her magic. As this story unfolds we find the bond between a group of people from different backgrounds. Macey is at the centre but she needs her men for more than a distraction.

This is an adventure book. We get to explore a creative world and meet some interesting characters.

This is a reverse harem story which has adult content. It’s the first book in a series and more is to come.

I listened to this book via Audible. Angus Yellowlees reads this book well. This change in voices enhanced each of the characters voices.

I really enjoyed this book and I’m quickly becoming a Laura Greenwood groupie. Skye MacKinnon is new to me but I look forward to reading more by this author. ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DNF somewhere around 70%

But I need to praise the originality of a Kelpie MC.
I mean, Kelpies are grooooossssssss, that's pretty ballsy to have a heroine being one. And not very common.

I was so excited when I found a Scottish mythology reverse harem with a kelpie as a main character! I’ve been dying to read some of Skye’s work and I wasn’t disappointed for making this my first one. From the Deeps was filled with mythical creatures, a prophecy, and some very steamy scenes. The characters and storyline were well developed and I truly loved the uniqueness of it. I can’t wait to continue this series and Macey’s journey to fulfilling the prophecy and finding the rest of her harem!
Angus did an amazing job narrating this book! I fell in love with his accent from the start. He brings every part of this story to life and it was probably one of the best male audio performances I’ve listened to. There was slight skip and background static between chapters, but that was the only bad thing I’d have to say.

KU Not my cup of tea

I couldn’t get in to this one. I found I didn’t connect with the protagonist and the story seemed slow and somewhat basic.

The paranormal and magical elements were complex, intriguing and rather original. The erotic aspect got a little tiresome after a while. Okay, so the female shifter is an assertive person who knows what she wants and goes after it. But the amount of pure animal lust could have been greatly reduced without detracting from the story.

This book is so bad that it made me laugh. So I guess 0.5 star for the half attempted plot and 1.5 stars for a horny heroine. This woman be thinking about how hard one of her men’s wiener is while in the middle of a dangerous situation. I literally couldn’t read a chapter without her thinking about all the things she wants the 3 men to do to her in bed.

Sometimes I would read about scenes that have nothing to do with the men and she still managed to go “but those dicks though…”

I honestly would give this book a 5 star if the authors would just go all in with the smut instead of trying to have a plot.

We have Macey who was kidnapped, but yet wants all the guys. She is having a hard time believing everything that is said to her, but yet she follows along. I feel that it needed more action, more knowing about characters. I will read the rest because it is interesting and I want to see what happens.

Absolutely loved this book and the start of Macey’s journey with the Wardens. Lots of new adventures, magic and love in this story filled many mythical creatures on a journey to fix the Staran and a battle against the Voice.
With a side journey of finding waffles for Macey.

Unsure of my feelings on this book.

Macey has been living on land for three years and has grown tired of its boring nature.
That doesn’t mean she wants to get kidnapped by three hot guys though.
Finding out she is the water warden from some ancient prophecy isn’t any better either.

I’m on the fence about this book.
I like the premise of it and I found it interesting but while reading it I had a hard time staying focus.
I liked all the characters, however, Macey seemed really wishy-washy with her feelings.
It seemed like she couldn’t make up her mind on how she wanted to feel.

I’m going to read the second book before making a decision.
Maybe things will get better.
I encourage others to read the book before making a decision on it though.

This was a very interesting and unique read. I've never read anything with a kelpie before. The authors do a great job of creating this world and introducing everything. I love Macey, she's sassy, strong, and questions everything. Macey, Cam, Flint, and Jared are 4 of the 7 elemental wardens, i'm very interested to see where the story will go with all of them. The story moves at a good pace and i'm really excited for more.

At first, I wasn't sure about a male author but was quickly convinced that was the right way to go. Angus Yellowlees has a great voice to listen to and differentiated between characters well. I especially loved how he did 'The Voice' but was not a fan of how Flint was voiced.

This is book one of the Seven Wardens series and the main character is Macey, a kelpie princess, who has spent her last three years living on land with her annoying twin brothers. She is getting bored with life with her brothers in such a small village and wonders if she should set off on her own and move to a bigger city, as she tries to work out where she wants to spend her future. When the power goes out one night, she goes looking for her brothers, in a thick mist which seems to be covering everything, and ends up falling over them. Shortly after, she is knocked out and taken by a stranger to a place on another world. When she wakes she finds two men in front of her, Camdan and Flint who she managed to annoy. Only those two can travel along the Staran, the paths between worlds, through the mists. Flint has gone off to collect Jared from the tavern. It seems the three men are Wardens of some sort of prophecy and she is supposedly the fourth member of the team. In all, there should be seven Wardens in total and Camdan and Flint were told the story by a spirit called Malan hundreds of years ago. The Staran only allow them to travel from one world to another, when they have a purpose and are meant to be somewhere.
All three men are very good looking, but Jared hasn’t been feeding and he is an incubus, leaving Macey acting very forward and trying to kiss him and even the other two men, before they try and stop her! The three men know that they are Wardens and the prophecy states there should be seven, one for each element. Jared is an incubus, but also earth. Camdan is a wraith and wind, while Flint is also a wraith and fire, her opposite element. Macey is a kelpie and naturally her element is water. The prophecy states that lightening has been captured and ice is on the way to rescue her. Once all the others are together, then air will join them. The only problem they have is that the Staran won’t allow them to return to Earth and Macey is left wondering what has happened to her twin brothers. They try to travel again from their magical home in the mists, only to find themselves meeting a strange people who believe they are the only ones able to travel the Staran. Their next stop is to find ice before he or she is also captured, but they end up meeting a cat-man who doesn’t exactly like humans, but believes they may be able to help his sister, a dog shifter, who was attacked by a dark being. This dark being is linked to a terrifying and painful voice Macey has been subjected to and which she won’t be able to withstand much longer. Lots more to come in their quest for all seven wardens, but nothing comes easy! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book.

Gathering the Wardens . . .

Macey is a kelpie princess living on land. But as part of the agreement when her father allowed her to live on land was that she would have her magic bound, unable to use magic. She got her brothers to stop fighting, then went to her room to read. The lights went out and the boys did not answer. She went out the front door and a mist surrounded the house. She stepped outside and carefully moved through the mist.

Her grandmother had told her of an old legend where Immortals created fogs to hide themselves from humans when they walked on Earth. And sometimes humans were helped by “mysterious beings”, never knowing who had helped them. She called for her brothers, Jerry and Bruce. Her foot hit something and she bent down in the midst, finding her unconscious brothers. A dark shape, created from the mist, appeared and she was afraid. Because along with those old tales of humans being helped, there were also tales of the fàth-fiata bringing great harm and evil. Had something been done to her brothers? Something touched her face and whispered RUN, but she would not leave her brothers and something hit her head from behind as she crumpled to the ground.

She awoke to the sound of voices. A man who said he was not human, Camdan, had kidnapped her but has no idea why except that it “felt right”? None of them knew where the Staran (ley lines) had taken them, except it was where they needed to be. Camdan said only one of “his kind” can use the Staran, so she would have to travel with one of them; however, until they have done what the Staran wanted them to do, fulfilled their purpose, they won’t be allowed to leave. When she got angry at Cam who asked if she was a mermaid or selkie, she grabbed his throat and he immediately knew not only that she was a kelpie but was a member of the Royal family. How did he know?

His two friends, Flint and Jared, want to help her discover the purpose for them being brought together since the Staran won’t let any of them leave now, preventing her from returning to Earth from her house in the Mists. If only the 3 sexy men would stop distracting her so she could think!

What they will eventually find is that Prophecy states there should be seven wardens, one for each element to save the world. Jared is an incubus and earth. Camdan is a wraith and wind, while Flint is also a wraith and fire, opposite element to Macey. Macey is a kelpie so her element is water. The prophecy says lightening has been captured and ice is on the way to rescue her, so once the others are together, air will join them and they will be complete.

46% and my eyes have been constantly rolling. Guys I really thought I was strong enough to grind through this read since it had a awesome storyline going for it, but it was like trying to read a 16 year old with serious hormone issues.

Macey is a mythical shifter who is kinda kidnapped? Taken really and sure she's upset about it for 3.5 seconds then she's just so hot and bothered she just wants to feel the guy in her, tried jumping another guy, kisses another, now this all happens after she just kinda woke up from passing out and meeting strange guys. Yeah what I said, roll eyes! So she's snappy and moody like my 10 year old, her emotions are just everywhere, but she's still like oh these guys are so yummy, she wants to bang them, ugh can we please get on with the story. The story it's self is so killed by just her talking in her mind about doing these strangers, her acting like a child, and her kissing and giving heated looks while giggling. Just another goofy chick characters with nothing Appealing what so ever. Let me also throw out how ignorant and rude she is, she says she not racist but she comes down on others that are not like her, she meets another kind of kelpie kinda ppl, and this chick is like, it's insulting they even call themselves that, they are nothing like her ppl. She's just a real piece of work I couldn't nor did I want to even continue with this mess. You don't need a whole book with heated looks, sexual tension, and sex it's self. You had a great thing going until you went all twilight movie. You can also have a strong character without making her a big ol b@#$%, super annoying, and in my opinion, totally useless. I felt like the only reason she was even in the book was to spread her legs. If you like childish books, and super worthy eye rolling characters, then this book is right up you're ally

Macey wants to be on land. In order to do so, she has to allow her powers to be locked and her brothers to come with her. While coping with this and adjusting to life on land, something happens and life as she knows it is forever altered. She discovers that she is one of the seven elementals chosen to keep the world from being destroyed.

I actually didn't hate this book. I really enjoyed it actually. I have read previous books by Skye MacKinnon and I enjoyed those very much as well. I'm not going to lie, I enjoyed them a bit more than I did this one, but I'm not here to talk about those books. I'm here to talk about this one. While I enjoyed the book very much, I have a feeling that I will not be rushing to read the rest of the series. I will probably wind up rereading this book when I do get around to reading the rest of the series though.

My biggest issue with this book was Macey. I didn't really care for her personality. I'm really hoping that this is one of those cases that she winds up having a major personality growth through the series. If not, I do not think that I will be able to stand the rest of the series. I did see potential for that happening towards the end of the book at least. Another complaint I have about the book is the instant sexual attraction thing. It's just not very realistic in my opinion. That doesn't really deter me from reading this series though.

I do recommend this book. If the reader is a fan of fantasy and end of the world type novels, this is a very ideal book for them. I do need to stress the importance that this book is very heavy with adult content and some children should probably avoid reading this material. Other than the two main issues I pointed out, I enjoyed this story very much and I do look forward to reading the rest of the series when I'm able to.

Macey, am pretty sure she's Nessie's daughter, is amazing! She's tough, has a good mind, bold, and knows what she wants. This book is a RH with a "bam in your face" introduction to her 3 guys but a medium burn to the "get to know each other" part of the deal. It takes a lil while to get there but after each connection is sealed Macey gains a tattoo on her back for each element that represents them. She thinks they kidnapped her and they say they rescued her. Lots of unanswered questions for both sides and the whole she's wondering what happened to her brothers. No one seems to know. Macy wanted a quest and the Fates choose the quest/adventure for her... she gets to find out about worlds she never knew about, beings she thought were just myths and now thinks Auntie Nessie was telling true stories. She meets Storm Kelpies, a dead a dead prophet, and a cat and cu sith. She learns about the Staran and the Fath-Fiata.... which may not be what they believe them to be. This book introduces "The Voice" who is only attacking Macey, mainly because her mental walls are not that strong, Flint and Cam claim they're really really old and have exceptionally strong shields, Jared is an Incubus and should have strong shields also but his are not as strong as Flint & Cam. The Voice gets in the head of Macey and causes her migraine type headaches and she blacks out.... causes the guys some mental anguish of their own, as they aren't able to help her. She manages to break out of the hold but in the end it's too much for her.... this book introduces a lot of background and the book ends on a cliff hanger and am so looking forward to the next book in the series! It does grab your interest and like a fish reels you in just let you rest a bit then reels ya in again...Enjoy!!!

Macey is a kelpie princess taking her turn living on land, the tradition of her people when they turn 18. However, before she came out of the loch her father placed a bind on her magic. And he sent her older twin brothers with her. So instead of any grand adventures, she's living with two idiots questioning what she's meant to do with her life. Her answer comes in an unexpected way, a sudden fog, an unknown figure, and a kidnapping. Macey comes to in a different dimension staring up at two hot guys. The world that is opened up to her is extraordinary and dangerous; Wardens, seven elements, The Starhan (a pathway between worlds that is a living entity), three more elements to find; it's all overwhelming but also exciting. Macey now has a purpose, an important role, and three hot guys by her side.

This is a Reverse Harem based on Scottish mythology. It's imaginative and original. Macey is a bit sex-crazed at times but overall is a likable lead female. She's a nice blend of confidence and vulnerability. I'm interested to see what she is able to accomplish with her magic. Cam, Flint, and Jared are fantastic. They are each a unique character bringing command, heat, humor, and diplomacy as needed. The attraction is immediate, but the bond seems genuine. The sweet touches, the warm glances, the protective attitudes in addition to the sexy, hard bodies makes them all keepers. The steamy scenes definitely confirmed that!

The world building is excellent and I loved the Scottish lore. The adventure is great fun, the danger is real, and evil seems to have targeted Macey. It ends with a cliffhanger which of course made me immediately want the next book. Everything seems to be hanging in the balance and could go in so many different ways. I want more! And I want waffles!!

I adored this audiobook by Laura Greenwood and Skye MacKinnon! I loved that they went with a male narrator, it was exactly what the book needed and I CANNOT WAIT to listen him do the rest of the series ❤️❤️❤️

I liked the story of the 7 Wardens. I enjoyed how they met and their different abilities and how they are different supernatural beings. I didn't think I was going to like Jared as much as I did, but he surprised me. I think Angus did a phenomenal job with his personality. I adored Camdan! I wasn't 100% sold on Flint's voice but I love his character. The adorable moments these guys showed us in Book 1 was fantastic. I think the only reason I couldn't give the book 5 stars all around is I am not 100% sold on Macey yet. I think my only complaint from Book 1 was that her mind was mostly about jumping them and their physical appearance. I am excited to see them learn more about each other and strengthening their relationships even further. I also wasn't a huge fan of them all shacking up right away but I understand why. Enjoyed the way Laura and Skye described Macey in her kelpie form. Oh, wish only Jared called her little kelpie (or just the guys), not all the other male characters that did. Loved how different all 3 of them were with Macey (and how steamy their scenes were!). I also am interested to see what happens with Ishban, Amber, and Catman ❤️

Again, Angus makes this story come to life and I am really happy that Laura and Skye went out on a limb and picked a man to perform the narration instead of a woman. I thought Angus added a lot of value (and did a good job with the different characters, especially "The Voice' and the Malan). Hope book 2 isn't too far away on audio, will snatch it up right away!

** Cliffhanger Warning! ** Holy waffles! I really like this book. It’s not the usual fantasy, reverse harem romance. I like that, because even though there are some parts that don’t make much sense and/or feel a little off, it’s obvious this story is one that doesn’t take itself seriously. Neither should the reader! Yes, the beginning of the book is riddled with plot holes and is slightly cringe-worthy (Macey is almost immediately okay with being kidnapped), but this rocky beginning soon makes way for a fun adventure. There’s plenty of fast-paced action (including the sexy kind), some worlds-travelling, a confusing prophecy, a quest or three, and a terrifying villain.

The thing I like best about this is the less-known magical beings. Macey, the female main character, is a kelpie who is just as new to this world as I am. Camdan is a wind-wielding wraith-like being. Flint controls fire. Jared is a baobhan sith, aka an incubus, who can manipulate earth. There are more cool Scottish magical beings. I like how the mythology is worked into the story so well that it never feels like a lot of exposition. There’s also a glossary and some beautiful illustrations!

I’m intrigued by this story. I want to see where this journey takes Macey and the other Wardens. I’m interested in the villain, too. Nobody explained who or what he is. The epilogue revealed a couple of things, but there are so many mysteries that I want solved. Will Macey rescue her brothers? Why is she the main character, anyway? (She’s fairly clueless and her magic is sometimes wonky.) Can the Ice Warden rescue Lightning? Where is the last Warden? What is wrong with the Staran? Can the gang ever get to eat some waffles?

Hardly any typos.

This book will set the premise for the rest of the series. There are some seriously intense scenes in this book, so if you don't like that sort of thing, this book isn't for you.

The book opens with us meeting Macey, she's a kelpie currently living on land among humans. Something all young kelpies are meant to do. Unfortunately or fortunately her father has bound her powers, although she can do a partial shift or if in water shift to her kelpie form. Her brothers Bruce and Jerry, the Crown Princes are fighting, again. After threatening to call their Aunt Nettie, she had gone to read. When the lights go out, things are about to radically change for everyone.

There's a mist surrounding the house, her brothers are unconscious and something hits her in the head as she collapses in someone's arms.

Suffice to say Macey doesn't exactly expect to fall for who she believes are her captors. At first there are extenuating circumstances that have her lusting after all of them, Jared's fault. He's an incubus who has been starving himself. Then there's Camden who 'saved' her and Flint who was a just a bit annoyed, then very interested in her.

They need answers but the Staran has a mind of it's own when they travel through it. We meet several interesting characters as the puzzle continues. They know they will need to find Ice to free Lightening and Macey keeps being attacked by a 'Voice' in her head. The Voice has Lightening, is leading Ice into a trap and it wants Macey. It seems to be collecting the Wardens and Macey needs her powers unlocked without returning to the loch to have her father do it.

Fast-paced with excitement, some laughs, kindle melting sizzle and so much more.

This reverse harem story was set in a world of different magical creatures.

I'm a fan of all the different creatures coming together and contributing their own special part to things. It's what I love about RH too. That each character contributes something special to the relationship.

The overall plot of this story was good. And it was told in an interesting, entertaining way. It was certainly able to hold my attention. I also find myself interested in what's to come.

Angus Yellowlees was a new narrator for me. And his accent was fun to listen to. The only things I found myself wishing different was some of the scenes with other "disembodied voices" and tone variations for so many characters. I found some of the disembodied voice moments a little distracting because of how it was recorded/styled. Sometimes it pulled me out of being absorbed in the story. And then I just thought there were a lot of characters but not always enough variation on tone. You definitely have to pay attention when everyone is talking together to know who's speaking if you're listening and not reading. Overall I liked him as a narrator. I just think I'd like him even more with less parts to play.

This book is not a standalone but part of a continuing storyline and I wouldn't mind hearing more.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I think this story was a fun, imaginative, and thrilling start to a new series! The pace moved right along, the characters were distinct and endearing, and the plot was pure magic. It did end on a cliffhanger, but in this case the story had already made leaps and bounds of progress so the cliffhanger didnt feel like a bother. It just made me pine harder for the second book.

Macey, female protagonist and Kelpie Princess, was unwittingly pulled into a world of more magic and prophecy than she had thought possible, whereupon she made some pretty large and life altering discoveries. Not the least of which was her discovery that she had three mates.

Jared, Cam, and Flint, the male protagonists, all brought something unique and exciting to the table and made this a very steamy read! I loved the friendship between the guys, and the lack of jealousy when they all realized Macey was theirs. They were all caring and thoughtful; perfect book boyfriends!

Adventure, steam, peoples of myth, and magical destinations await you; you just have to start reading this book!

I love both these authors so seeing they had worked on this together I had to give it a go.
I liked the idea of Macey but struggled to like her at first. Macey just seemed either angry or completely distracted by the men around her. However as the story progressed she grew as a character and more of a leader which was good to see.
It did need a bit of editing such as misspelled words, wrong words etc.
And I would have liked a more clear difference between water and ice, air and wind. To me they are still the same element.

Saying this, I do like a reverse harem, especially when you can understand the heroine in being unable to choose. I love all three of them and cannot choose. I like the male characters. All three of the love interests are really likeable and different and I am intrigued by Cat Man and Izram. They have very clear personalities and are well thought out.
I love all the mythical creatures. Some I know nothing about. The pictures included are very helpful.
A Kelpie as the main character is something very different to me which was cool.
Overall a great concept, it did not take long to read and I would be interested in continuing the series.
