Prior to his first professional work, Tynion was a student of Scott Snyder's at Sarah Lawrence College. A few years later, he worked as for Vertigo as Fables editor Shelly Bond's intern. In late 2011, with DC deciding to give Batman (written by Snyder) a back up feature, Tynion was brought in by request of Snyder to script the back ups he had plotted. Tynion would later do the same with the Batman Annual #1, which was also co-plotted by Snyder. Beginning in September 2012, with DC's 0 issue month for the New 52, Tynion will be writing Talon, with art by Guillem March. In early 2013 it was announced that he'd take over writing duties for Red Hood and the Outlaws in April.

Tynion is also currently one of the writers in a rotating team in the weekly Batman Eternal series.

This is one area where DC is far better than Marvel, with their Pride characters. They are much more in the mainstream. The stories aren't just gay stories. They are just stories with gay characters. Yes, there is a difference.

Most of the stories in this collection were first printed in the DC Pride (2021-) #1 (DC Cultural Anthologies comic book, but this trade paperback also adds select stories from Mysteries of Love in Space (2019) #1, New Year's Evil (2019) #1, and Young Monsters in Love #1. The new stories don't really change the review I wrote for DC Pride #1:

I love that DC made this book even if the contents are oh so very so-so. Either the stories were nowhere trifles or they assumed a lot of knowledge about the characters. While I don't want every story to be an origin, it's a missed opportunity in a book like this which may reach an audience beyond DC's usual fanbase to not introduce these characters more effectively in the stories or with cheat sheets between chapters.

Contents:
Note: All stories reprinted from DC Pride (2021) #1 except where noted.

3.46/5

This is a collection of DC comics featuring LGBTQ+ stories and characters, which includes:

1. The Wrong Side of the Looking Glass written by James Tynion IV, art & colors by Trung Le Nguyen, letters by Aditya Bidikar, and edited by Jessica Chen 3/5
This comic features Kate (Batwoman) and Beth (Alice) Kane, with Kate constantly missing Beth/Alice. The artwork was lovely, but if I'm being honest, I had to look up who Kate and Beth Kane were because I had zero knowledge of who Batwoman was (although in hindsight, her costume should have been a dead giveaway - I didn't even notice the bat symbol on her outfit lol) and was left feeling a bit confused at the end.

2. By the Victors written by Steve Orlando, art by Stephen Byrne, letters by Josh Reed, and edited by Chris Conroy 3/5
This comic features John Constantine, Extraño (Gregorio de la Vega), and Midnighter. Another comic with fantastic art.

3. Try the Girl written by Vita Ayala, art by Skylar Patridge, colors by Jose Villarrubia], letters by Ariana Maher, and edited by Andrea Shea 2.5/5
This comic features faceless Renée Montoya (The Question) saving defence attorney, Valeria Johnson - these were characters I was unfamiliar with prior to reading this comic.

4. Another Word for a Truck to Move Your Furniture written by Mariko Tamake, art by Amy Reeder, color by Marissa Louise, letters by Ariana Maher, edited by Andrea Shea 3.5/5
I think I'm a sucker for any Harley and Ivy story.

5. "He's the Light of My Life!" written by Sam Johns, pencils and inks by Klaus Janson, color by Dave McCaig, lettering by Tom Napolitano, and edits by Arianna Turturro 3/5
This comic (which has a classic feel to it), features Alan Scott (The Green Lantern) who has recently come out as gay and uses this as an opportunity to reconnect and bond with his gay son Todd Rice (Obsidian) and share his story of his first love.

6. The Flash in Clothes Makeup Gift written by Danny Lore, art by Lisa Sterle, colors by Enrica Angiolini, letters by Becca Carey, and edits by Michael McCalister 4/5
The Flash (Jess Chambers) prepares for her date and vows not to be late (how strange that Flashs are notorious for never being on time!)

7. Be Gay, Do Crime. written by Sina Grace, art by Ro Stein and Ted Brandt, letters by Aditya Bidikar, and edits by Andrea Shea 3.5/5
A quick, simple and straightforward short story featuring the Pied Piper fighting against the Drummer Boy and somehow ending up working together to do good.

8. Date Night written by Nicole Maines, art by Rachael Stott, colors by Enrica Eren Angiolini, letters by Steve Wands, and edits by Diego Lopez 4/5
I will read anything written by Nicole Maines. I believe this is Dreamer's first comic book debut.

9. Monsier Mallah & The Brain in "Visibility" written by Steve Orlando, art by Nic Klein, and letters by Tom Napolitano 4.5/5
This was an unexpected monster romance and, surprisingly, my favourite comic from this anthology.

10. "Crushed" written by Andrea Shea, art by Amancay Nahuelpan, colors by Trish Mulvihill, and letters by Tom Napolitano 3/5
Crush finds love in the fighting pits... or maybe not?

11. Harley Quinn in Little Christmas Tree written by Vita Ayala, art by Elena Casagrande, colors by Jordie Bellaire, and letters by Dave Sharpe 3/5
Harley going out of her way to thank Detective Renée Montoya (for releasing her from the station rather than holding her over the weekend).

12. Love Life written by Andrew Wheeler, art by Luciano Vecchio, colors by Rex Lokus, letters by Becca Carey, and edits by Michael McCalister 2.5/5
Aqualad attends pride for the first time but gets attacked by Eclipso.

13. This anthology also includes a bunch of fantastic artworks at the end 5/5

14. Finally, this anthology includes some DC TV profiles of notable queer DC heroes featured in television, along with interviews with the actors including: Batwoman/Ryan Wilder (played by Javicia Leslie), Dreamer/Nia Nal from Supergirl (played by Nicole Maines), White Canary/Sara Lance from Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow (played by Caity Lotz - unfortunately, no interview from Caity), John Constantine from Constantine and Legends of Tomorrow (played by Matt Ryan), Thunder/Anissa Pierce from Black Lightning (played by Nafessa Williams), and Negative Man/Larry Trainor from Doom Patrol (played by Matt Bomer). 4/5

Some great morsels, nothing meaty. James Tynion IV & Trungles' story to start the anthology was the strongest and beautifully rendered.

good book! the plot was very dry and short but thats because they are short one issue stories, but i loved the inclusivity- there were trans, poc, lgbtq+ people which i really loved. great to see dc making strides in inclusivity and diversity

For a long time, horror and science fiction films got no respect from movie critics whenever it came time to doling out Oscars. Occasionally, such a film might win acclaim for special effects, costumes or lighting. But the actors and directors? They’d be lucky to get nominated.

So the forms were free to push the boundaries of what could be shown onscreen. Creators could inject all sorts of outré concepts, bizarre fantasies, scanty clothing and kinky behaviors and no one would bat an eyelash. A gigantic ape gets enamored of a gorgeous blond and climbs an immense phallic symbol to keep her all to himself? Oh yes. Gigantic lizards breathe toxic fumes to show a nation’s contempt for the bomb? Sad but true. A filmmaker shows his fetish by having apish men fondle women’s clothing? Hell yeah. An aging white man gets his head grafted onto a hefty black man’s body? Why not?

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you: DC Pride. I’d heard about some of the gender-bendered supers within these covers. But a lot were complete surprises. The stories were shocking, cute and occasionally as twisted as anything that I could find in a Z-grade schlock horror film.

Witness Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy share an anguished heart-to-heart talk while battling a ginormous, ghastly plant hybrid that Ivy (accidentally?) created. See a superhero father come out to his superhero son and then fly away to revisit his old “route”. The Flash is late for a date but she’s got a really good excuse! (Bad guys don’t care if your girlfriend is waiting for you.) In a story that screams of Dog Day Afternoon meets King Kong, a talking gorilla desperately tries to get an organ transplant for his heavily damaged lover.

Yep, this colorful compendium crosses the boundaries and proves that love has no restrictions, whether it comes to gender, species, construct or race. It’s serious stuff but there are elements of humor, too. Some of this will have people rolling their eyes. (Harley really doesn’t have any concept of personal space, does she?) Other stories have a sweet tenderness at their core.

The illustrations do a bang-up job, filled with the color, vibrancy, energy and action you’d expect in comics. A couple of othered heroes attend their first gay pride carnival and it’s bedecked with all the lavish hues that you’d expect…until a grayed-out supervillain decides to rain on everyone’s parade.

As a bonus, the back of the book is filled with extra illustrations featuring superheroes bedecked with color. Just check out a jubilant Superman wearing a rainbow-colored cape! This is a fabulous collection and no queer, DC-loving, comic-obsessed reader should be without it.

Batwoman in preda all'angst adolescenziale. Brutti disegni, forse troppo sporchi per me.

Mi piacciono i colori e i disegni.

I love that this exists. As with most anthologies, the stories can be a bit hit and miss and are often too slight to be engaging or get you invested enough to check out more of that character, but there are plenty in here that are really sweet and fun. It's great that a lot of the comics aren't about their queerness, they're about them doing their thing whilst also being queer, but without any previous knowledge (which I don't have for maybe half the characters in here) some of the stories just feel a bit flat and leave you unsure who they are and why they're in here. That said, it's still hugely important that this exists. Even if you approach it in the most cynical way possible and assume it's just a cash grab for rainbow dollars, it's still giving a voice to queer creators and drawing attention to queer characters and stories so everyone can feel represented, seen, and valid in the media they consume, which feels like a nice step forward. Factor in the stunning pin-up gallery at the back and you've got a very enjoyable little anthology which I will look forward to every year!

like all compilations it has its ups and downs, but i think it's good overall! some stories are really standout and fun, like the first one with kate kane and both of the question stories(particularly like the second one with harley). i also like the ones with constantine, and crush, as well as ALWAYS being a sucker for mallah and the brain. there are also a couple that i feel like read a little awkwardly, like they wanted to make a pride comic and chose a message to support but didn't have characters or a plot before that. i like that they're not all stories committed to romance, i like that some still bring in the feeling of being a regular superhero comic rather than the superheroism being incidental, i like a lot of the art and character designs here. it's not like, the most extraordinary thing i've ever read but it's quick fun read and obviously queer which is a plus too. very worth a read for dc fans, is my thought here.

Wrote a review on the other one that I assume it's original title "DC PRIDE 2021". Decided to review this version too in case anyone searching. It's the same book & collection.

This is a good collection and surprisingly an action-packed DC LGBTQ+ stories. Not just some lovey-dovey & shitty drama coming out stories. Would rate it perfect 5 stars if all the issues has prettier artwork. But it's good enough, nothing of an eyesore, then again art is subjective. Highly recommended to everyone that is celebrating Pride. HAPPY PRIDE MONTH! 🏳️‍🌈

3.75 for this Pride collection. Some super fun stories, some confusing and boring stories, and one or two absolute bangers. Also read about some characters I had never heard of before! Got some new comics to check out now... A solid collection for Pride for all comic fans and those who just want some casual out and proud queer rep.

I am giving this 4.5 stars for a couple different reasons.
1. This is a necessary book. Many people will be upset or angry that queer people simply exist and live our lives happily. DC, knowing their fan base, published it anyways. And it could be rainbow capitalism, it could be a cash grab aimed at us queer millennials and zoomers, but it was still published and many queer authors and artists got published in this book, so it was a win-win for both queer readers and writers.
2. The DC anthology is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than the marvel anthology. Marvel pride was soooo underwhelming. I know you can enjoy both companies without making it a competition, but part of the reason I enjoyed this book much more was because it felt like there was much more effort put into it. Marvel’s pride book 100% felt like rainbow capitalism, DC at least made me feel like they were invested in the characters and not just using them to pull in money for the month on June.
3. It’s fun! Simple as that. But in the moments of humor, there are also profound and heartwarming moments, like the story of Allan Scott telling his son about his first love.

I wish DC would do more with these characters outside the month of June though. I don’t think I’ve ever read an Extrano story outside of this anthology. I also rarely see Pied Piper, despite being a somewhat formidable villain. The biggest slap to the face, though? This story about Renee Montoya, whom is gay enough to have a story in this book, but who can’t have a solo book with her marrying a woman. DC, you need to do better by Renee, she’s one of your staple queer characters, the same as Ivy and Harley, but you throw her under a bus every time instead of elevating her to the level of heroism she could be at.

My comic book club will be reading DC Pride: The New Generation so I decided to pick this collection up to prepare and compare.

This is a collection of a dozen different short stories, following different characters and brought to life by different writers and artists. I find that with any story collection, your mileage may vary from tale to tale, and these stories are very short: you get a snapshot of action, a glimpse of personality. I was not familiar with most of the characters (which was not unexpected, as I don't read a huge amount of DC comics, nor superhero comics in general) but I still found most of the stories entertaining.

I appreciate that the stories in this collection do not necessarily focus on a character's queerness, and although the stories are generally positive, not every character is in a perfect place in their life. Overall I am very pleased with this collection.

I'll be honest... this is a lot more fun than looking through the Wikipedia page for gay superheroes, even if I have no idea who about a third of these characters are.

Part of the problem with these kinds of anthologies though is that it seems like nobody really knows how to write a short superhero story. Or perhaps one that means anything to anyone not already familiar with the characters. Or that isn't "HEY DO YOU GET IT, THEY'RE GAY!". So most of these have kind of shitty resolutions.

Of all of them, the Batwoman story by James Tynion IV with art by Trung Le Nguyen that opens the book is the best. It mostly works even if you're not familiar with the characters and I really enjoy Nguyen's art style.

Is the rest of it bad? No. Is it great? Also no. But it's important that it exists.

It’s good to know there is a variety of LGBTQ+ characters in the DC universe but to me the stories shown in this collection feel like they don’t do enough with the characters involved.

Not that I’m expecting every character to be one that grabs every reader but my main problem was how short the stories were. Some of them just get started in terms of action then they just end.

If I had to pick some of my favourite stories in this, I’d have to pick the Batwoman and Midnighter stories (both are characters I’ve never picked up stories about before). They used the limited story quite well in my opinion.

Pretty good anthology if a tad too many Harley Quinn stories (2 is too many). Good art all around including some nice work that falls outside of DC's usual house style. Especially nice was Klaus Janson's art on the Golden Age Green Lantern. A couple stories were hard to follow. Esoteric is nice at times but clarity is even better.

This book has it all!

*Queer kids and queer parents
*LGBTQ+ flirting, dates, and love
*Evil landlords!
*Platonic LGBTQ+ plots
*A homophobe trying to rewrite history and portray Achilles and Patroclus as cousins (spoilers, they were lovahs)
*A Pride parade!

So fun to read, full of joy, entertaining, warm, and fuzzy. J'adore!

Meh... I liked the Batwoman, Green Lantern and the Harlivy ones (though this version of Harley was a bit annoying for my taste).
I guess given the amount of space given to each story (waaaay short), they cannot not all be winners. So, of course, it seemed rushed, disconnected and one cannot quite feel/empathise with the characters.

Speriamo possano sorprenderci ancora.

It was made of a whole bunch of one shot stories. Each was so short they just felt like lip service or fan service. This felt like they were just throwing something together last minute just so they could have something 'pride' out there. Also the art work on several of the stories were not good. The best artwork was in Love Life. Wish they would have used their time to make something.
