THE HOW-TO GUIDE FOR INNOVATORS TO IMPROVE THEIR IDEAS AND SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH THEM THROUGH THE POWER OF NARRATIVE
In a world that's been turned upside down by a pandemic, social upheavals, environmental disasters, and economic disruptions, the need for reinvention is paramount. While many entrepreneurs and innovators have brilliant ideas, they desperately need the skills to successfully articulate their vision to investors, prospective customers, employees, and stakeholders. In this informative and empowering book, David Riemer breaks down the storytelling clutter so you can gain the attention you need to be successful.
Storytelling is foundational. If you have a groundbreaking invention in mind or have a plan to solve worldwide problems, Get Your Startup Story Straight is the tool you need to create better customer-focused solutions, motivate more backers to your project, and ultimately dominate in the market. Broken down into three acts, this book will allow you to discover the building blocks of your narrative, the storytelling techniques to convey your ideas clearly, and the archetypes for inspiration. The author's own words tell it "Innovators are ubiquitous nowadays, and for this community, storytelling is essential." If you are a creator struggling to get others on board, this is the handbook to refine your story to guide your product strategy, shape your company, and ultimately improve lives.
I thoroughly enjoyed every page of it! I initially thought storytelling was a familiar and straightforward concept, but the more I read the book, the more I realized I had missed many crucial details in getting my narratives straight. I was fascinated by the smooth flow of introducing each concept and learned the true significance of captivating storytelling that I could connect to lectures from my English class and experiences from my own life. Unlike many informative books I've read, this book did not leave me with questions and confusion. Instead, I felt enlightened, and the book has been filled with countless highlights and tabs for the many relatable anecdotes and fulfilling lessons I will carry on into my writing in school and beyond.
As a director of a nonprofit startup, the information that David Riemer presents here is sensible, compelling, powerful. It's not that we would not already have a sense of the importance of "story" in effective communications, but understanding the underlying theory, along with many examples - stories themselves - is clarifying. More than a "how to" book, this is a "why to" discussion as well. The many examples of effective use of story are illuminating. Our nonprofit is "changing our story" as we shift gears to significantly expand our operations, thanks to the ideas and methods presented here. Bravissimo!
We are living in a story telling world, and this is more important than ever for entrepreneurs or new businesses. This book is a useful reminder of this, with implementable strategies. A useful book that you can utilise immediately - thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book would be valuable to anyone who is working on a product, service or just looking to learn more about how to talk about what they're offering through story telling. The author borrows from the format used by Pixar- on storyboarding and goes ahead to give detailed insight with examples on the steps of story telling. Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.
Loved the way the subject was presented. Storytelling is very important for companies large and small. If you have to speak publicly at all you should read this book to be a better storyteller and speaker.
Get Your Startup Story Straight was written and narrated by David Riemer.
What I liked: -- Case study intro by John Klein who used Riemer's approach to change his VC pitch. -- Narration and content is engaging from page 1. -- Narrative structure method is helpful: understand the character's intention and obstacle to throw life out of balance and create drama; tap into emotion, create tension. What are your customers' pain points (ask three Whys)? -- Examples from Pixar: who is our main character, what are their motivations, what is their conflict, why do they feel that way, where does the story take place, how does the conflict resolve
What I didn't like: -- Hardly anything!

* I feel the similarity to “Start with Why.” * This book tells us how the story is important and I totally agree with it. * There are many successful companies. I could see how these companies have and tell a story, and they are so useful. * I found that the presidential election is about telling a story. * I see interest in seven types of stories. Any good story is categorized in any of them; * Overcoming the monster, Rags to riches, The Quest, Voyage and Return, Rebirth, Comedy, and Tragedy.
