Discover the remarkable life of Johnny Cash... Free BONUS Inside!
Johnny Cash, one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, was born into a family of impoverished sharecroppers during the Great Depression. From an early age, he picked cotton with his siblings at an Arkansas farm, learning the value of grit and hard work already as a young child. Cash never forgot where he came from, and he kept with him a defiant spirit and a sheer resilience which would be infused into classic songs known the world over.
As much as Cash had his strengths, he also had his weaknesses. Drug addiction would plague him for much of his life, but no matter what he was going through, he never gave up. This book follows the life, legend, and testament of one of the greatest musical icons of all time—Johnny Cash.

JOHNNY CASH A Life from Beginning to End. Johnny Cash was a good man. He always said that it was his wife that made him that way. What’s not to love about that?
The book starts off with tales of his life during the Great Depression. Here’s a quote of his: “I learned to throw a bowie knife and kill a jack rabbit at forty yards, not for the sport but because I was hungry.” I did not know that he served in the Korean War. I also didn’t know that he was married to someone other than June Carter Cash. This book was filled with all sorts of details that I never knew. I highly recommend it.
Excellent insight into Johnny Cash. My Husband, Daughter, and I still are Cash fans. We remember fondly many of his songs including the songs he sang with The Highwaymen Thank you Hourly History for once again bringing Johnny back to life for me.
What a great artist Johnny Cash was. Born in Arkansas 1932 he came from a rural farm like Elvis and became a famous singer with a deep special voice I haven't heard anybody have anywhere. The text in this book is good and runs well, it's easy to understand and read.
The Hourly History series features e-book histories and biographies that can be read in about an hour. They are great if you want to know a little more about a topic, but you don't want to read a regular-sized book or biography. Plus, they offer a set of free books every weekend so you can explore without spending a dime.
I already knew the bare outlines of Johnny Cash's life, but this one filled it out a little more. It would have been great if there had been embedded links to the songs that are discussed throughout, but since this is an e-book it's not particularly hard to minimized the Kindle app and open up YouTube and find the song. I did this exact thing with the original version of Cash's classic hit Ring of Fire. The original version was performed by one of June Carter's relatives. I had no idea that Cash didn't write this song himself.
I was struck by the fact that Cash continued to struggle with drugs throughout his life. He was in and out of drug rehab centers from the 1960's into the 1980's. For me, this makes his take on the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt all the more poignant.
I enjoyed this e-book. I rate it 4 stars out of 5.
A great performer his success came at a high price
Johnny Cash grew up dirt poor but his mom recognized his musical talent and love for singing. His mom got an extra job to get him voice lessons, but after a while his teacher said he was better with the voice he was already singing with and he should stop lessons. He saw how successful Elvis Presley was becoming and he follow the same path. Both men struggled with drugs to help them stay awake and perform but Johnny overcame them several times when June Carter intervened to help him. He had four daughters to his first wife and a son to June Carter later. He was one of the great performers and truly a legend in his own time.
Before reading this. I thought I knew most of Johnny Cash's life. However, this is a most interesting read. Johnny fought with drugs more times than I imagined. When I was buying his albums, I thought he was already a great musical star. This book explains that he was working towards that goal, but had not reached it in the mid-60s.
I thought the comments by his music teacher were telling. She understood that his raw talent was something that would resonate with music fans and she suggested he stop music lessons and just do his own thing. It's amazing that a concert-trained musician would understand Cash's natural (and rather raw) talent at such an early point. This story is engrossing; I couldn't read it fast enough.
I learned quite a bit about Johnny Cash in this short biography. I thought I knew a lot about him since I grew up in that era and my parents played his music but there was information in this book that I did not know and I found interesting. I knew the titles of Cash's hits, and I knew about his association with Elvis, but I didn't know about his brother dying at such a young age in such a tragic way. I knew that Cash struggled with addiction but I thought it was alcohol and I was surprised to learn it was pills. It is remarkable that throughout Cash's many bouts with addiction he still had hit recordings right up to his death.
I grew up listening to Johnny Cash, but didn't know a lot about him. With reading this book I have learned a good deal about the "Man in Black." Some of his story was known to me a lot of it wasn't. The people of Arkansas have a lot to be proud of in Johnny Cash. Although there is more to know about him this is a nice start to telling about him.
Several decades before his passing I read several biographies of Johnny Cash so when I saw this, I figured it was time for a refresher. The books I have read through Hourly History have never disappointed though sometimes the people I have read about have. Not unusual, as I have disappointed myself more times than I can count. Cash has found his peace at last, safe in the arms of His Saviour.
I have always enjoyed Johnny Case's music and knew something of his history. This book did a good job of telling his story in a concise manner. For all his faults, he managed to create great music.
Johnny Cash was a unique and talented singer. Unfortunately he was just another celebrity drawn into and lead astray by drug abuse. Do we know what it is that takes people who come from humble beginnings and leads them into vices that ruin their lives?
Hit the main points but didn't delve into anthing. Bullet point a, b, c etc. It was informative but just lacked that something special. Johnny Cash was a talented, complicated man and his life had many MANY twists and turns. This book just hit the highlights.
An excellent read on the early life and tough days ahead of one of our greatest American singers. Born in poverty in Arkansas he made the name "Hello, my name is Johnny Cash" renowned around the world.
This Biography of Johnny cash is just quick bare basic facts of the singer's life but understandably so Johnny Cash is a giant legendary figure and there's too much territory to cover for this format
I enjoyed reading this but I’m quite sure that The Man in Black (AKA Johnny Cash) was & is a lot more than what is depicted in this volume. Pretty basic info for those that know little of this great musician.
It's almost impossible to put the life of a larger than life character like Johnny Cash into a short book like this, but this is a very decent attempt. A must read if you have more than even a passing interest in this country star.
A synoptic biographic of The Legend that is Jonny Cash; interesting, if a bit dry and leaving the reader wanting more. A very quick, yet enjoyable read.
