Clavering Chronicles #3

The Sport of Matchmaking

Rate this book
For once, he has met a lady less inclined to marry than he is. How unfortunate that she is the only bride he will consider.

George Clavering is much too young to think about getting married. Yes, his older brother—and even his younger sister—have managed to tie the knot, but he has plenty more years of play and sporting events ahead of him before he need consider such a thing. Even matchmaking becomes a sport when gentlemen bet on the Season’s successes or failures in the club. He will not give them an opportunity to bet on him. Furthermore, why settle down when there are young women like Lady Alice who liven the sport of matchmaking with friendly wagers?

Lady Alice St. Clair is the fifth daughter of the Duke of Carr, and as she is independently wealthy and may do as she pleases, she has no reason to wed. She certainly has no intention of doing so. If the marriage mart offers nothing more than the unattractive boors who have presented themselves at her door for the past five seasons, it should hardly surprise her parents she cannot be persuaded to the altar. True, George Clavering has a full head of dark hair and a smile that is as mischievous as it is attractive, but no lady of character would change her mind for one above-average specimen of the male race.

For both, what began as a friendly bet between two bored guests at a ball turned into an earnest desire to help their protégés find happiness. And if some deeper feelings should stir in George to win Alice’s heart, then he has no choice but to dampen them. After all, Lady Alice has sworn she will not marry, and George has applauded her decision. For him to try to weaken her resolve now would be…unsportsmanlike.

Isn’t this a beautiful cover? Ok…. I felt like this was a somewhat different historical romance. There was a lot more to this story than romance. It’s book 3 of a series but can be read as a stand-alone.
The story begins with Lady Alice, the daughter of a Duke. She was a strong female protagonist and she didn’t want all the societal restraints that were put on her. She simply wants to stay unmarried. But she runs into someone who will change all of that for her.
I loved the ton for the lack of a better word. Jennie Goutet wrote wonderful side characters that brought more fun, intriguing and love into the mix. The whole thing went together beautifully.
This romance was a slow burn and had me smiling often. The banter and chemistry was sweet and satisfying.
I loved the ending which of course was a HEA. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a clean historical romance.
Thanks Jennie Goutet via ARC. 💜

I LOVED this book!!! Historical romance holds a place in my heart and especially ones that are thoroughly entertaining. The Sport of Matchmaking was just that. There were multiple side stories and events that gave this book depth.

I haven’t read a ton of Jennie Goutet’s books, but now I feel like I’m missing out. She writes so well and has a gift in storytelling.

Alice and George were adorable and I loved how they interacted with each other. Their ploys in matchmaking was hilarious.

Some of my favorite parts were their first kiss (of course), the alcove, and Alice finding out that George fights well at Gentleman Jackson’s boxing saloon. 😂 It was a small detail but one that made me laugh.

Can't remember much of the story now. It was very average with unmemorable characters and unexciting bantering.

For different reasons, George and Lady Alice do not want to get married. George wants to put it off a few more years and carry on his bachelor lifestyle and Alice has zero plans to do so ever. But a wager between new friends may force them to reconsider.
Both characters are vastly likeable and their shared moments filled with banter that lead to unwilling tenderness. I will always love a male lead whose yearning initially surpasses the lady's. The supporting cast was full of past characters I enjoyed revisiting and new I want to see more of.
Outside of one plot point needing more backstory (for me), this story is no exception to my growing appreciation for Jennie's writing. Her relationship arcs and attention to detail are incredible. Every book that I've read has featured a believable love story and I have so much love for George and Alice.
Thank you to the author for the gifted copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.

Jennie Goutet should be required reading for any fan of regency romance and The Sport of Matchmaking is the perfect example of what I love about her books!

Neither Alice nor George is looking to marry and after a chance meeting in an alcove, enter into a wager regarding the matrimonial state of two acquaintances. The matchmaking efforts twist the plot into tangled knots and manage to make even two determined singles begin to question their views on matrimony.

Both main characters were vivid and fun and oh, so likeable! Their banter was one of my favorite parts of the book and oh my, the ever growing tension between them was delicious!

The author's attention to historical detail and language make her books a truly immersive experience and George and Alice's story was no exception.

This book is a gem in the sweet regency romance genre and I cannot recommend this series enough!

I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.

I am always drawn to a cover with purple – it makes me happy for whatever reason – so I of course knew I wanted to read The Sport of Matchmaking by Jennie Goutet! I have not yet read the first two books in this series but that’s not a problem as it can be absolutely enjoyed on its own. You’ll likely want to go back and read them after you’ve finished George & Alice’s story though, because Goutet’s writing style is so engaging.

Neither George nor Alice plan to get married anytime soon (ever, as far as Alice is concerned), but they also don’t have any qualms about wagering that someone else will. You’ll thank them for this as the story progresses, because not only does it provide plenty of opportunity for witty banter and sparks between George and Alice (yay for alcoves!) it also gives the author a chance to showcase a secondary romance. Double the romance, double the swoons! I know I won’t hear any of y’all complaining haha.

While I adored the romance (to no one’s surprise) and the wit, I also loved the character development in The Sport of Matchmaking. George in particular had a lot of maturing to do in some ways. Sure, he was a good guy who respected women and had a moral sense of right and wrong. But when it came to taking responsibility for his own future and settling down, he would still have preferred to spend his time flirting and boxing and making wagers at White’s. I loved how the author allowed him to grow throughout the story, as he observed those around him (including Alice’s brother, George’s own brother and George’s best friend) and began to have epiphanies of what his life needed to look like – making him all the more ready for a future with Alice… once she trusts him again, that is. Why doesn’t she trust him? Well, I’m not going to tell you – you have to read it for yourself after all 😉

Bottom Line: The Sport of Matchmaking by Jennie Goutet is full of wonderful characters. delightful dialogue, swoony romance and heartfelt emotions. Readers will enjoy watching George and Alice fight the inevitable in their own lives even as they play matchmaker with their friends, the sparks they emit and the witty conversation between them giving us plenty of reasons to smile. But beyond the banter and the kisses, there is also meaningful growth for these characters – and not just the main players. This may have been my first book by Jennie Goutet, but it won’t be my last! Definitely recommended for fans of Regency romance!

A chance meeting in a secluded alcove at Almack’s leads to a new attraction and friendly wager between two people determined not to marry. In this third installment of the Clavering Chronicles, Jennie Goutet writes an engaging, slow burn Regency romance with amazing depth and feeling. I loved the charming characters especially Lady Alice and George Clavering. The witty dialogue and clever matchmaking storyline kept me turning those pages to see who would win the wager and if these two stubborn characters would find love with each other.

Strong, beautiful, stubborn Lady Alice just wants to take her inheritance and live on her own. Her main fear is being betrayed and having her freedom curtailed by a greedy husband. She obstinately maintains, much to her parents’ chagrin, that she will not marry. That is until she meets the handsome, carefree, George Clavering.

George is the attractive, flirtatious second son of a baronet, and not in any hurry to settle down. His brother wants him to finally take an interest in the estate he’s inherited, but he’s determined to put off his responsibilities until after the season. He and his friends live a carefree life of making wagers, boxing at Gentleman Jackson’s, and attending ton events and their club with little variation.

When George meets Lady Alice, he’s immediately intrigued and when she expresses an interest in setting up a match between George’s friend Oswald Duckworth and Miss Gwendolyn Chauncey, they decide on a friendly wager. George is definitely against the match and bets that Duck isn’t interested in settling down. As George and Lady Alice seek each other out to discuss the wager of course, the sparks fly. Will they maintain their stance against marriage or will the two finally have met their own match?

I loved this story and the chemistry between the two main characters. It was such a fun read with several twists. I also enjoyed the side romance between Duck and Miss Chauncey. Alice’s brother Bart and his friendship with George added another fun layer to the story. There’s another wager involving Alice and I was anxiously waiting to see how that would play out.

Highly recommend this witty, slow burn romance! Fans of the series will enjoy seeing characters from previous books. Though it’s the third book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Thanks to the author for the advanced complimentary copy. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

This lovely book releases next week and Regency romance fans will not want to miss it! It’s the 3rd book in the Clavering Chronicles but it can easily be read as a standalone novel. It has it’s own main characters and a few cameo appearances by some characters from book one and two.

In this story, Lady Alice, the daughter of a Duke, has proclaimed that she will not marry and is just biding her time until she is old enough to live on her own with her inheritance. A chance meeting with George Clavering, a young but determined bachelor, ends in a friendly wager regarding the matrimonial prospects of two of their acquaintances.

There is so much to love in this story from the witty dialogue to the secondary characters and family members. I enjoyed watching George and Alice begin to care about each other more then they wanted to admit. It’s a slow building romance with a satisfying and somewhat unexpected ending that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I received a complimentary ebook from the author/publisher. I was not required to provide a positive review and all opinions are my own.

I've gotten pretty bad at writing reviews soonish after completing a book which is definitely affecting some ability to recall how I felt in the moment, but let me give it my best shot.

I find Jennie Goutet so interesting because she's the rare author who writes amazingly but her stories haven't clicked with me yet. I think I found the first Clavering book a little boring. I liked the second instalment better but wasn't 100% sold on the romance but loved the character work. With this one I also wasn't really invested in the romance at all, or the characters which is a real shame.

I'll try an concentrate my gripes into 3 main areas.

1) I felt like both George and Alice required growth. George was enormously immature and selfish, and Alice was snobbish and quite judgemental. While George did get a growth arc (albeit a little truncation and rushed in sections) Alice didn't get any of the same attention, which made me feel robbed as a reader.

2) I didn't feel invested in the relationship between George and Alice, and as I've said be before that that is the death knell for a romance novel. Their interactions in the first 50% felt a little....forced. Or at least it didn't resonate with me the way I think the author intended. It didn't feel like banter. It felt heavier and wasn't something I was craving more of.

3) The first 2 points are really why this was 3 stars (because like I said the writing was excellent). My little throwaway complaint is I didnt' really like the story - I found it a little blah. I wasn't invested in George and Alice as it was and felt ripped off that so much real estate was given to these other characters, when I felt it would have been better served concentrating on developing Alice and George.

Anyhoo, I think I will read more from Goutet and hopefully the next one fires on all cylinders.

This book is amazing! It is sweet, fun, romantic, entertaining, full of heart, and so much more! Whenever I picked up "The Sport of Matchmaking", I was whisked back in time to the Regency Era, and went on such a journey with this story.

Firstly, what a pretty cover (as have all the books in this series!)! This is the third book in Jennie Goutet's "Clavering Chronicles" series, and just as with the first two novels, I loved this book! Ms. Goutet's writing style is visceral, vivid, detailed, and so full of heart and emotion that you feel along with the characters. I could envision each moment, and often forgot that I was reading a book as I felt so immersed in the story! It was like I was right there with the characters!

I do not want to say too much about this book due to spoilers, but, I will simply say it is a must-read!
George and Lady Alice both, initially, do not want to get married to anyone. However, when a bet between them begins to grow into something much more, will these two change their minds? Full of slow-burn romance, wit, banter, heart, sweet moments, and so much more, this book truly has so much in it. George and Lady Alice really bring out the best in each other, and watching them fall in love was truly special.

If you enjoy Regency Romance, I highly recommend this novel! It kept me turning the pages page after page, and chapter after chapter, from one moment to the next to see what was going to happen. I can't wait to read what Ms. Goutet writes next!

Thank you so much to Jennie Goutet and Elm Hill Publishing for sending me a beautiful ARC of this book, it is incredible! All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I told myself I was going to read (well, actually listen) to this book for the pure enjoyment of it rather than review, so I took no notes.

But I can't let this book go without mention. I adore Jennie Goutet's writing, and this book was just as wonderful as her others! It was absolutely delightful, and Stevie Zimmerman did a beautiful job narrating, as she always does.

Thank you, Jennie Goutet, for drawing my name in your audiobook giveaway!

Overall, I enjoyed this book and I think the cover is so pretty!

It is part of a series, but definitely stands well on it's own as a stand alone.

I appreciated and was pleasantly surprised that there was a lot of depth to the story as a whole.

I particularly liked Lady Alice and felt she was very well-written.
There are also several great side characters that were a great touch to the tale.

The story as a whole flowed together very nicely and I found that Author Jennie Goutet writes some great dialogue. (It had a very Jane Austen like touch, at times.)

The ending was good and if this sounds like a book you would enjoy, definitely check it out!

***I received a complimentary ARC of this novel, but I was not required to leave a review positive or otherwise. The views and opinions in this review are my own honest thoughts on it.***

This was my favorite of the series. George is a great character and has been since book one of the series. Lady Alice was a little to high and mighty at times, with her rank and privileges but overall I liked her too. The ending was a little too predictable but still a fun read.

I have been dying to get George’s story! He has been such an interesting character to spy on during books 1 and 2. I loved him paired up with (and against) Alice; it was fun to see them battle each other through wits and wills!

The romance was incredibly fun because neither Alice or George were looking for it. It felt real, relatable and organic!

The setting and circumstances were on point with everything that I love about Jennie’s writing style. She makes her writing not only accurate, but entertaining!!

I liked this book. I have enjoyed reading the other books in this series so it was fun to read about George and Alice. I liked how both of them had no intention of getting married but couldn’t deny their attraction. I liked how there was a lot of matchmaking going on and how certain couples ended up together. I thought this was an entertaining read and I really enjoyed how the story played out.

The Sport of Matchmaking by Jennie Goutet is the third in the Clavering Chronicles, but a stand-alone Regency novel. Lady Alice has vowed to never marry, but loves matchmaking. George Clavering does not have plans to marry, but enjoys making small wagers. Our story follows these two new friends as they make a wager and walk a path neither expected.

The novel had all things Regency with Almack's Vouchers, boxing gentleman, and carriage rides. The characters in the story were delightful, the conversations were enlightening, and the love story was believable and fun to watch. I was charmed with the story. Such a satisfying historical read that I highly recommend.

I was given a copy and not required to write a positive review.

2.5⭐️ The author’s style wasn’t for me. While well written, the story was bland and boring. I glazed off more times than I could count.

The ton, and perhaps rightly so, were characterized as mindless. George and Alice were not particularly likable. Their chemistry on a scale from 1 - 5, a tepid 3.

I don’t think I’ll ever get over how much attention was heaped on Alice’s new friend, Miss Chauncey, who had the personality of a frozen cheesecake.

Story Notes

I was so very glad to see that this book was going to feature Lady Alice and George. I've been waiting for a story for them since book 1 and I'm glad to see they are in it together. This is a lovely story that has all the necessary Regency inclusions with some fun banter, characters you wish were your friends and a love story that is truly beautiful. The set up of everything with the wagers was highly entertaining and I loved how both George and Alice tried to sneakily find out information about their proposed match partners. But along with that, I really enjoyed the friendships they had both within their families and their circles of friends. There was true comradery between them and a desire to help each other live life to the fullest. Alice and George had some learning and growing to do themselves in this story and I was so glad that Jennie let us see it played out in the pages. Each of them had set ideas and assumptions that had to be broken through so they could understand what real love looks like. One other part of the story I really liked were the scenes at Gentleman Jackson's. That is a fascinating establishment and it was neat to get another glimpse into its purposes and activities. Its definitely on my list of places to see if I ever make it to London. I definitely recommend this story for those who enjoy Regency romance with a dash of adventure/suspense thrown in to make things interesting. Add this one to your TBR and get to it as soon as you can....you won't be sorry you did.

I received a temporary complimentary E-ARC of this story from Jennie Goutet via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review but am most pleased to do so. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

#BookReview : THE SPORT OF MATCHMAKING by Jennie Goutet

What a lovely cover for this fun regency story. As the third book in the series, this can be read as a standalone. I think this is my favorite in the series so far.

George was not yet ready to get married and Alice didn’t have plans to get married at all. As a Duke’s daughter, she was financially secure. It was a few chapters in before I fully warmed up to both of them. But Alice and George were just so adorable together. Their witty conversations were delightful. They definitely have chemistry even in denial. Their matchmaking was fun but sincere. I liked how their true personalities were revealed as the story developed.

I have enjoyed the side characters and their own tales. There were enough characters and entertaining situations that kept me engaged in the story. I am most interested in Alice’s younger brother and their close relationship. He had a lot of growing up to do and big shoes to fill. I hope he will get his own book. Alice’s friendship to Cleda was sweet as well. I am also glad to revisit with Philippa here.

This was a fun and heartwarming regency romance, with a few faith elements thrown in that I liked. I finished the book with a pleased sigh.

This is the first novel I have read by Jennie Goutet , and I’m pleased to report that it won’t be the last. Jennie writes historical romance set in the regency era with wit and sincerity. I felt like I was a wallflower in the candlelit ballroom, with no need of a dance partner.

The Sport of Matchmaking is the third book in her Clavering Chronicles, but this could be read as a standalone too. I will warn you though. You will want to read the others as soon as you finish George and Alice’s story.

George and Alice share a few things in common: young, attractive, and have no goals of getting married (or anytime soon). What starts as a friendly ballroom wager, turns the table for these two independent matchmakers. Not only did I like our hero and heroine, but I enjoyed the secondary characters as well. Especially Alice's younger brother.

If you enjoy historical romance, then I’d wager you would enjoy this book too. In fact, as your book matchmaker, let me go ahead and say it’s the perfect match for you. Your courtship begins on May 17th.

Pure enjoyment! Everything about this book is wonderful. The storyline is intriguing, entertaining and fun. The characters are charming, honorable and witty. Lady Alice just wants to go live her life as she wishes. She doesn’t like the fact that single young women are restricted in where and when they can go. She has made up her mind that she will never marry! George is not ready to marry, he and his friends are living life to its fullest and are too young to settle down. But when he meets a young women (Lady Alice) in an alcove at Almack’s, his whole life is turned upside down. A silly bet, an unwanted wage and his best friend falling in love, what could happen next. This story held me captive, from beginning to end. It is the 3rd book in the Clavering Chronicles series and can be read as a standalone novel. But I recommend them all, they are all entertaining, clean, regency romances, with the characters mingled throughout each story.

Alice is not going to marry she decided that long ago. But what is she to do with Mr. George Clavering? How can she help him find a wife when she cannot bear the thought of any other woman than her marrying him? George asked Alice to find him a wife but can he accept her choice?

This might be my favourite book in the series. George and Alice’s banter was so fun. Although this was style typical neither plan to marry but they fall in love story the way it was done still stood it out. I really like seeing the other characters from previous books even though they are side characters.

I did enjoy this story and liked the character of George. Lady Alice, I wasn’t so sure about, on the one hand I can see why she says she doesn’t want to get married but she also hold others to standards that she doesn’t adhere to herself. George, did have a little growing up to do but he was fundamentally a good man. I enjoyed reading of his development as a person. For me, the first half was a little slow in pace but the second half made up for it and overall I found it to be an engaging read.

My Dearest Jennie,
Do forgive the informal address, but I simply must tell you that I found your book positively charming. I smiled many times throughout as I read and I loved the verbal sparring between George and Alice! I loved how they became friends unknowingly and how their desires at the beginning gradually shifted into something different and more mutual. The wagers, the sibling relationships, the small tête-à-têtes between them both all lent to a perfect story, once again.
I do always love an independent female protagonist, which Alice manages quite well. I liked her from the very start and was quite enamored of the idea of a woman casting off all of society’s expectations to live as she desired. The only thing I wished different for her was more trust in George. I thought he’d proven his trustworthiness and she was a little too willing to believe the worst of him. But as things ended so well, I shan’t be angry with her too long.
I loved watching how you crafted things so that George could grow and mature slowly throughout. I did like him right at the beginning but grew to like him quite well by the end. He grew into quite the goodly, thoughtful gentleman, and he deserved a good woman by his side. They truly became perfect for one another, not because you wrote them changing for the other person, but because they brought out the best on each other. Brava! That was most excellent!
This final installment in the Clavering Chronicles was so well done and completely filled the need I have for beautifully written prose and delightful stories. Thank you for writing such wonderful books that I can devour.
Ever yours,
Jessica

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: Read by Stevie Zimmerman—good reader. Emotion and inflection are good, perhaps not as dramatic as some, but still good. Accent is lovely. Differing voices for genders but not necessarily too much differentiation between characters.

**Many thanks to the author for an advanced copy of the book, in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions belong to me.

Quotes I loved:

“As a woman, she also has a degree of common sense most men lack, which will make her an agreeable addition to my circle of friends.” -Lady Alice

A woman should feel pretty in her own right, even if not for the purpose of attracting a man.

“Mr. Clavering, I cannot think of a single woman who would suit you as your wife.”
“Can you not?” His voice was low and throaty, and she could barely breathe. He released her hands and lifted his to lay his fingers on her cheek. “I can think of only one, Alice.”

“I had not expected for you to find a place in my heart, but I fear you have found yourself at home without my expecting it.” -Alice

Liked the premise but it's execution didn't capture my attention. I had to make myself come back to the story and read a different one half way through before finishing. Characters were fine but not very memorable. There wasn't much tension to the storyline. I don't know.

I think a lot of people would love this if they're looking for a nice, clean romance where not much happens.
