What Matters Most is the third book in the Nantucket series by Courtney Walsh, and I’ve read and loved them all. They completely stand on their own with a common setting, Nantucket.
This is the story of Emma and Jamie. They have the most adorable “meet cute,” and each has a secret. Emma’s husband has passed away, and she has a young son named CJ. She’s recently acquired her dream job at an art gallery. Jamie did not intend on falling in love with Emma. He’s in Nantucket for a simple task, to deliver a letter, and then leave.
There’s loss and grief and pain to work through, but most of all, there’s love and goodness. This is a journey through Emma’s faith in healing after loss. It’s about starting over and second chances. I became really invested in the love between these two and witnessing their growth.
Overall, another sweet, emotional, warmhearted love story from one of my favorites who always delivers.

In What Matters Most, Emma and Jamie both have a secret they are hiding. My preference is for characters to get it out on the table early in the pages and then work through it. However, I know that in reality, it doesn't always play out that way. In that way, the characters felt real.
Jamie was a great leading male. He showed strength in a number of ways, humility, courage and honor. His interactions with young CJ illustrated that he cared for Emma's son quite a bit, but probably wasn't a "kid" person in general. I was ok with that since it was clear that he had CJ's best interest in mind and took time to play with him.
I didn't love Emma as much for a couple of different reasons. Cam's parents and Jamie's sister Hillary were all lovely secondary characters.
Overall, well written novel that had me turning pages.

Courtney Walsh is a gem. I am so happy to have found her in 2021! This is the 3rd book I've read by her and it's as amazing as all of the others.
Emma seeks solace in Nantucket. Five years after losing her husband in battle, she seeks to finally start over with her son CJ. Shortly after arriving, she meets Jamie. What she doesn't know is that Jamie is there to deliver a letter. Rather than relaying the message in the letter, he gets caught up helping Emma renovate an apartment. What starts as a wonderful friendship progresses to much more. Both Emma and Jamie are finally feeling whole after all they have lost;however, they are both burdened with secrets, not knowing if their love can survive.
I absolutely loved the characters in this book, including Jamie's sister, Emma's friends and her in-laws, most especially her father-in-law. His words of wisdom and the way he saw the world really moved me and I was often choked up when he was in the story.
A wonderful book about love, regrets, forgiveness and family.

Love, loss and forgiveness.
A heartfelt novel set on the picturesque shores of Nantucket Island. A touching read that pulled me in with realistic dialog, well developed characters, and compelling storyline.
Emma is working hard to make a fresh start on her own after the death of her husband 5 years ago. I liked how the story unfolded with a powerful message of love and forgiveness, as well as the chemistry between Jamie and Emma. I admired the strong faith of Emma's in-laws and how they support her no matter what, stepping in effortlessly to help when needed. Her father-in-law especially is a wise man so full of faith.
Compelling storytelling, excellent characters that came to life before my eyes. Emma is a wonderful mother. I loved how Emma and Jamie encouraged each other to pursue their gifts. A touching love story, full of faith, forgiveness and hope.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought or hoped that I would. I think for me I really just didn't connect with either of the characters. They weren't bad or anything, there was just nothing about them that I could really relate to.
I felt like Emma and Jamie fell in love way too quickly. It was like instant romance with too much thinking about feelings, then the "big secret" drags on forever (like a little bit longer than I thought it should have). There were a lot of moments that could have been better utilized (like how CJ didn't feel like he really fit into the story. He was just there when it was convenient for a cute moment but most of the time he was just an afterthought. And I liked Emma's relationship with her in-laws, but their conversations about faith were just glossed over and not well used.)
And maybe this is just me, but while the theme of forgiveness is prevalent throughout the book, I did find it odd that Emma seemed to really want Jamie's forgiveness for what she'd done. Especially since she didn't do anything to him. I mean, they needed to work through it but she didn't need his forgiveness, just his acceptance. Meanwhile, Jamie really did need Emma's forgiveness, so that part was played out well.
So while I really enjoy other books by this author, this particular one just wasn't for me. I would instead recommend the Harbor Point series!

What Matters Most was a story of second chances for two people who carried grief and bitterness heavily on their shoulders. It was the renewal of lost dreams. It was a story of the intense highs of a new love and the heart aching sadness of betrayal. This story pulled my emotions all over the place in the best of ways.
I loved the relationship that began as a partnership and tentative friendship between two people who were brought together by a tragedy, even though for much of the story, Emma was not aware of the connection and Jamie was worried about how to share the truth. I loved the way Jamie and CJ bonded and the way that Jamie learned to truly care for and love this little family.
I thought I could see the way things would unfold for these two and to a point, I did. However, the author threw in some wonderful twists and beautiful details that kept me turning pages to see how things would work out. I loved that there was an epilogue, even though I would have loved to see it as an extended epilogue that peeked even farther into the future, too. But that is probably just me. What Matters Most delved into some heavy topics with grace and highlighted the importance of forgiveness.

Another Courtney Walsh emotional sucker punch read! She had me on tenterhooks from the very start, cunningly keeping secrets...well, secret...and just hinting at them for well over half the book. I was going out of mind with curiosity. Which means why, yes, I actually did read this book in one sitting.
Why does Jamie feel he has to atone for something connected to Emma? Why is it so hard for him to tell her? What deep, dark secret has been eating him alive? And then there's Emma, life on hold as she struggles with grief and regret for five years. She's been going through the motions of living without really feeling alive and I so wanted to understand why!
And then, by chance (not!) Emma and Jamie meet in Nantucket. Attraction ignites, but romance is rife with pitfalls as they both keep parts of themselves hidden. Such an emotional roller coaster ride! Depression, anguish, fear gradually vanquished by the gift of forgiveness and grace which ultimately leads to acceptance...and, no spoiler here, a hard-won happily ever after.

What Matters Most was a great contemporary romance story. I felt like it had more depth than other contemporary novels and it was emotional at times to read.
I really liked Jamie. His character was one that I felt so badly for and you could just feel his sorrow/grief for what had happened. The romance story was good; although, it was a little too much for me at times.
All in all, What Matters Most was a good read and I really enjoyed reading it.

I thoroughly enjoy Courtney's novels because she writes fabulous dialog and compelling romances.
What Matters Most is book 3 in the Nantucket Love Story series, but it can easily be read on its own. It was fun to imagine myself on the shore of beautiful Nantucket while reading Emma and Jamie's story. Both have suffered great loss and carry big secrets that have weighed heavily on them for five years. When good intentions and a simple misunderstanding cause them to meet, the sparks of attraction surprise them both. A sweet romance develops quickly, and each nurtures repressed creativity in the other. When their secrets are revealed, can their relationship survive in the light of reality?
I really enjoyed this contemporary romance. Jamie is a very swoony hero who's so handsome, talented, and understanding, he's 'almost' too perfect. I appreciated Emma's desire to be independent while maintaining relationships with family as she raises her young son CJ. The plot includes some heavy 'real life' topics, especially for a Christian fiction novel, and Ms. Walsh handles them realistically and with great care. I felt the references to faith were woven into the story in very organic ways. I was very eager to discover each character's big secret (and had several theories) so waiting through most of the novel felt prolonged but built a compelling sense of mystery.

Despite the two main characters being artists (a watercolor painter and a photographer), What Matters Most felt a little uninspired. Emma is a widow and mom to five-year-old CJ and has been merely going through the motions since her husband was killed in action five years earlier. Jameson shows up on her doorstep with a secret related to her husband’s death but doesn’t get around to revealing it until they’ve fallen in love. And Emma has a shameful secret too. The writing’s fine, but this one just didn't grab me. I've enjoyed many of Courtney Walsh's other books much more, and she continues to be one of my favorite authors in the contemporary Christian romance genre.

I’ve just finished this book and I want to sob my eyes out.
Emma’s story is just that wrenching.
This is a story about love and loss. Betrayal, forgiveness, and second chances.
A beautiful, beautiful tale.
This story is once again, a return to the beautiful island of Nantucket. A place I long to visit someday. But...in this book, we don't really get to see much of the island, it is all about Emma and her story.
Emma's a widow, and doing her best to raise CJ her son. She's determined to do everything right, to have her son know his daddy was a hero. But there are some things she'd rather leave hidden in her past.
Then Jamie arrives. She assumes he's the answer to her prayer, answering the ad she placed. Jamie allows her to think that, and sets to work on her apartment renovation project.
And of course, you guessed it...they fall in love.
But, there are so many issues that need to be dealt with. Secrets. Realities needing to be faced.
Courtney Walsh writes characters with heart. And this story almost wrenched my heart out.
When Emma finally is willing to face painful things from the past, then is when healing can begin.

Have I said how much I love Courtney Walsh’s books? This new one did not disappoint.
Emma and Jameson both have secrets in their past that are keeping them from living life to the fullest. Each one is attempting to start fresh and find a way to move on from the loss and trauma, but neither one expects that they hold the key for each other.
Jameson just wants to help Emma in any way possible when he shows up on her doorstep with an apology letter but before he can tell her, she assumes he is answering the ad to help remodel her rental apartment. He doesn’t correct her so soon they’re teaming up to remodel the apartment and becoming more than friends.
They’re lives are coming together perfectly but their past secrets threaten to ruin it all.
I love the way Courtney weaves Faith throughout the story in a realistic way showing how difficult it can be to have it after heartbreaking loss. And that sometimes it’s more than just losing someone, it’s also the guilt of the decisions you made before they left that is the hardest to deal with when you’re left behind.
This story is about love, but it’s also about family, friendship, healing and finding yourself again after loss. It’s about living again fully.

I am so happy to be back in Nantucket, and fall in love once again; this time with Courtney Walsh’s latest, immersed in Emma and Jameson’s story. I just love how Walsh introduced both these characters in one of the sweetest meet cute. The depth of their backstories had me torn up inside and out. Walsh is so incredible with weaving a story that incorporates loss and grief, family and friendship, and forgiveness. It’s also a story about those left behind, the guilt, and moving on.

For years now, I've enjoyed Courtney Walsh's books. They have always managed to capture my heart. Her ability to evoke such emotion is stunning. But this one. Ahh, this one was completely profound. Walsh has woven together two individuals who have been living with misplaced guilt for years. Neither thinks they deserve happiness.
Walsh plumbs the very depths of emotion in these two people in this story. Her very best work, in my opinion. Not to be missed and definitely one for the keeper shelf. Well done!

There were parts of this story I really liked, such as the friendship of Elise and Emma and Emma's relationship with her in-laws. But then there were parts of the story I didn't like, such as the pretty big secret that Jamie was keeping from Emma. I liked that Jamie wanted to help Emma out and changed his plans to do that, but I believe he should have made a bigger effort to be honest with Emma much earlier. The longer he kept quiet the more suspicious I became that Emma would find out herself and things would be bad. At times it felt like Emma's son, CJ, was just added in when it was convenient to the story. Emma frustrated me when she expected Jamie to forgive her immediately, but then she refused to forgive him. I also feel like the connection between a few characters came out of nowhere. I did really like how Emma's in-laws treated her and the talks that Emma had with her father-in-law. Those chats made her think.

What Matters Most is the third book in a series, but the first I read and I had not trouble enjoying this beautiful story. Emma Woodson's husband was killed in action and she is hoping the the charming Nantucket community where her late husband's family cottage is located will be the fresh start she and her young son, CJ, need. She knows she will need more than her salary from her dream job at an art gallery, so she wants to be able to rent out the apartment over the garage. It needs work, so she hires a rather handsome. Jameson Shaw, to do the renovations. When she finds out he has nowhere to stay, she lets him stay in the apartment while he is working on it. As they work together, get to know one another and CJ becomes close to Jameson, the secrets they are both keeping become harder and harder to share and let go of. Can they move forward, be honest with one another, and forgive themselves in order to have a life that will make everyone happy.
I liked both Jameson and Emma, but I loved little CJ. He stole the show and showed everyone how easy it is to love and move forward. Emma was struggling with why she was never enough for her husband, Jamie was dealing with the guilt that it was his fault that she was now a widow. This is an emotional story. Guilt, feelings of inadequacy, shame and fear are all feelings that can keep people apart, but those feelings will eat away at a person if they don't do what they need to do to forgive others and themselves. Courtney Walsh does a wonderful job developing the characters and their relationship. My first book by Courtney Walsh grabbed me right from the first, and held on to the end. I know I will be reading more from this author. All the characters were so well developed. I loved how accepting her in-laws were and how close they all were. An emotional read about forgiveness, loving yourself and others, moving forward, new beginnings and family. I definitely recommend this book if you like a clean, romance with some angst, but uplifting. Melie Williams narrates this audiobook with skill, emotion and expression. An enjoyable listening experience.

What Matters Most is the third Nantucket Love Story book, but can definitely be read just fine as a standalone.
There are certain books that really live up to the idea that 'you can't judge a book by its cover', and this one was certainly one of those. Looking at the cover, one might expect that this was simply a light hearted summer romance. In reality it is so much more than that. This is one that will have you reaching for the tissues, while also keep you swooning at the romance too.
I must admit, at times I was a little unsure about the romance between Emma and Jamie. First, it was definitely a quick one. Typically that doesn't bother me at all, but I think in this particular case because Emma was still so heavy in the grief for her husband, I questioned it a bit more. Likewise, they had a pretty major obstacle to overcome, and I wondered if it was truly possibly to overcome it quite the quickly... but then, that's the joy of a good romance--- they don't really have to be what we might expect, and truthfully no one ever knows how falling in love will happen. Though my head questioned a few things about the story, I found myself all in and completely invested in this story, and ultimately really enjoyed every last minute.
If you enjoy a good romance, this is certainly one to check out.

What Matters Most is a beautifully written, heartfelt story about forgiveness. It's also my new favorite Courtney Walsh novel. Of course every time I read her latest work, I make a similar declaration. This time I really mean it! Jamie and Emma are both walking hard paths, trying to move forward but still wrestling with the agony that comes from clinging to mistakes and regrets. I found this story so relatable. The depth of emotion and raw vulnerability the characters experience is so well done. I was moved by Jamie and Emma's struggles and their honest exploration of their feelings. To me, that's the mark of an excellent novel.
The slow burn romance is fantastic and I feel Courtney did a remarkable job with both protagonists' story arcs. It's hard to weave complicated secrets into a plot and make sure readers still want to root for the hero and heroine. I enjoyed the Nantucket setting, the art gallery and photography subplot, as well as the backstories. The secondary characters are well-crafted and add another enjoyable layer to the reading experience. (Travis is a hoot)!

When Jameson Shaw comes to Nantucket it is to deliver a letter he has written to Emma Woodson. Her husband died in combat while saving his life. He is burdened with guilt that he lives and Cam Woodson doesn't, and it was suggested to write letters to the soldiers who were involved. But his therapist didn't expect him to actually send the letters...when he is received well by the others, he decides to write a letter to Emma and then deliver it in person.
I really liked the dual POVs of Jaime and Emma, I didn't have to guess what each was thinking or feeling, and it made What Matters Most that much better. I think I liked Jaime more than Emma, and that doesn't happen all that often that I can relate more to the male character than the female. Emma though believable was extremely stubborn when it came to matters of her heart. Everyone kept saying Jaime was a good man and he was, she kept holding onto the yucky stuff. What Matters Most made me cry because while I haven't been in their exact situation I have felt guilt, grieved, and struggled with forgiveness. Loved this!

It goes without saying... Courtney releases a book and I know I'll like it, if not love it. While I haven't read every single book she's released, the ones I have are emotionally invasive to my life. Her characters jump off the page as people I want to befriend and the setting makes me want a vacation immediately.
Emma moves to Nantucket with hopes to kickstart her life beyond merely existing. She has a five-year-old depending on her. Between looking for a job and needing help renovating a studio rental detached from her house, she mistakenly thinks Jamie has arrived to solve one of her problems. Meanwhile, Jamie is full of guilt and has a secret to get off his chest but the ability to help Emma trumps all.
There are some hard topics mentioned and addressed (infidelity, death of a loved one, for example). Courtney handles them with realistic grace.

Courtney strikes again! This was an excellent read. The topics the book touches on such as grief, death in combat, death of spouse/child, depression, etc are heavy, but were incorporated and written in a way that wasn’t too much and made for a light read. I enjoyed watching Emma and Jamie learn to accept that they deserve love no matter what happened in the past. It’s a reminder to not let your past define you, but to learn from it and become better and move forward into the future!

This was a sweet summer story set on Nantucket between a widow and single mother and the stranger who shows up on her doorstep offering to help her fix up the guest cottage. Full of heart and great emotions, these two characters deal with their grief and guilt and manage to find love along the way. Perfect for fans of Elin Hilderbrand or Meg Mitchell Moore and good on audio.

Emma and Jameson have an unconventional meet cute that just might be what they both needed if they are willing to look beyond the past and into their future.
What starts off as a sweet hand man romance ends with so much more. You can always expect wisdom and truth bombs in Courtney’s writing and these characters truly have to dig deep to find what matters most.
