3.5 stars. I like police procedurals, which Powell is well known for, and while this book is not exactly that, it shares that feeling. This book is not perfect, but I enjoyed reading it.

The bodyguard and the whistleblower. Jana comes across information of wrongdoing of her company. She’s receiving threats to prevent her from going public and needs a bodyguard. Rafe just retired from the military and is talked into said position as bodyguard.
I liked Rafe best in this book, just being retired and not knowing how to act as a civilian or how to proceed with her life she struggles, wanting to adapt and wanting something she thinks she cannot have. Jana is a corporate professional who’s a people person that is used to take charge and is certainly no adrenaline junkie. In short, she’s the polar opposite of Rafe, but you know how the story goes, polar opposites attract and I liked them together. The romance moves rather quickly once they give in to their attraction, but that was ok for me since they are being threatened and all.

Speaking of threats, I always enjoy some good action scenes, so this was fun. Rafe is the tactical expert and Jana, well she’s not so tactical, let’s say she makes some questionable decisions for someone so smart, but hey it makes their situation more interesting. And those that have read the Fairview Station series will be happy to see Bennet and Kerstin appear as well.

Now on to what got them into trouble in the first place. This book has the promise of a good case to crack, to gather evidence and solve the puzzle of what the company is trying to swipe under the rug. But this is where the story fell somewhat flat for me, there is not much of a puzzle and Jana appears actually not all that interested in the case, as she keeps postponing to look at the information. The case itself could also have been more surprising. A missed opportunity, but strangely it didn’t bother me too much. There are some bumps, but this was an entertaining action romance novel to me.

Rafe Silva is finally retired after twenty five years as a Delta Force special ops Major. Before she has a chance to figure out what civilian life looks like, an old friend asks Rafe to work as a personal body guard. She will be guarding Jana Elliott who is about to blow the whistle on her company’s illegal practices in dumping life threatening waste material.
Having been a long time fan of Powell’s writing I expected her normally strong storytelling to surround this plot. Unfortunately, too many of the turning points were precipitated by Jana repeatedly making bad decisions for a supposedly smart woman. As well, the files which would verify the illegal activity were not read by Jana until almost the end to tie up the story. I guess what I am saying is the story lacks credibility. For me this is huge letdown.

I received a free advance review copy from and NetGalley. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

VK Powell is one of those authors – like Carsen Taite – who introduces the experience of her former profession in her novels. As a retired police officer, the reader knows that her books are gonna be right on the money in that respect. A romance between a whistleblower and her bodyguard protection sounds like a great make for the story.

Special Ops Agent Rafe Silva has recently retired from the army and is still undecided on her future career path when a friend asks for her help protecting a whistleblower. Jana Elliott is a top executive in a big corporation, happy with her career until a coworker dies and Jana suspects the company is covering up a deadly secret. Jana is determined to discover the truth but as things get dangerous a friend suggests she should hire a bodyguard. When Rafe shows up for the job an irresistible attraction develops between them…

This is an opposites-attract, butch/femme romance. The story reminded me a bit of Radclyffe’s Honor Series, because of the stoic butch vs strong femme rejecting protection plotline. As appealing as the damsel in distress plot could be, I rather not have a completely helpless character in danger. Jana isn’t weak but – like Blair in the Honor Series – she’s determined to keep her freedom. My only issue is that Jana’s behaviour seemed reckless at best and foolish at worst which didn’t feel consistent with a business-savvy person. That took me a bit out of the story and I found it hard to warm to her.

Rafe Silva is the typical stoic butch who is used to hiding her emotions as a result of her training as a delta force soldier, the most elite group in the army. Showing emotions on the battlefield could be deadly so she’s hard-wired to avoid that in all aspects of her life, even now that she’s retired. I really loved the character and how Ms. Powell slowly lets Rafe peel her layers to show her true self.

There are two parts of the plot, the romance and the whistleblower thriller. The latter takes the backseat most of the time as the attraction between the characters develops. Even though I found that at times the whistleblower subplot was a bit simplistic, it introduced a bit of a thrill to the romance. The chemistry between the mains is really good as well as the intimate scenes.

Those who read VK Powell’s Captain’s Choice will be delighted to see the appearance of the main couple, Bennett and Kerstin. They both have an important role in the plot and they get to participate quite a bit. There are references to their relationship but these two books can be read independently.

Overall, an entertaining romantic thriller by VK Powell. 3.5 stars.

Well:

a) Jana is an idiot with no concept of danger, urgency and necessity. She (stupidly) made herself a target on purpose and then did literally everything in her might to be the worst protectee ever. Not to mention the way she made herself a target. "I'll tell the big bad I know all about his illegal practices, but it's ok, because whistleblowers are protected by law". Jesus. And she did it repeatedly (5x that I counted) even after being actively threatened. Just marched up to the antagonist, actively goaded them, and then was surprised she was in danger... Again.
No one can be that stupid in real life, can they?
I had to repeatedly force myself to not throw the book against the nearest wall because of her.
-2/10

b) Rafe was nice, even if sometimes a bit socially inept. But by far my favourite of the two MCs. She balanced the dumpster fire that was Jana enough that I haven't stopped reading this story despite Jana's constant idiotic behaviour. The only think I don't like/understand about Rafe is, how the hell is she willing to love such a self-centred moron without any common sense. Have some standards, lady.
8/10

c) the writing wasn't exactly bad, but honestly I couldn't get over how stupid one of the MCs was being which ruined the whole story. This was worse than "miscommunication as the main conflict" trope. This plot was an "idiot sitting on a petrol-soaked pile of hay, playing with matches and throwing them around herself and then wondering why is the fire burning her" level of stupid.
3/10

Is this book a little predictable? Sure. Did I mind? Sure didn’t.

Jana is in need of protection ever since evidence of pollution by her company was given to her. She doesn’t know the full extent of it yet, but the ceo of her company is an ass and is adamant it all remains a secret. Or as he says leave well enough alone.
Just retired from the army Rafe is Jana’s bodyguard and she is super serious. It is needed. I think maybe the action is a little over the top when we aren’t certain about the information Jana has, but I liked it nonetheless.

Few things I had some issues with, like how “hot” both characters are and their instant attraction, quick I-love-yous and as said the action might be a bit over the top.
I think this is a typical VK Powell romance, lots of policing, strong butch and I’d say high femme mains. It’s nice, well-written and just that bit of intrigue that keeps you on your toes. I like the main characters together and as individuals. The supporting cast is fun as well Bennett and Kerstin from the Fairview Station series have the biggest presence and the others from that series get a mention as well. This is marked as part of the series, as far as I am aware this is a stand-alone book. But you can read Fairview series before this one so you know the back story of the the secondary characters.

With VK Powell, you know what you're getting. As a former member of the police force in various positions, she brings her knowledge of police work to her stories.

Rafe Silva has recently retired from her military career. Now she has to find her way back into civilian life. When her friend Bennett, who works for the police, asks her to provide personal security for a friend, it's a chance for her to enter the private sector. But is it a new experience, working without a team is a new challenge, is she up for it?

Jana Elliott is happy with her life, she has a top executive job, a great team, and now and then a woman for the night. But when a coworker suddenly dies, she begins to suspect something is amiss. The reaction of her boss immediately confirms her suspicions. And what's the deal with this shoebox she got that's full of documents, including some from her mother?
When Rafe and Jana first meet, they immediately feel a mutual attraction. But Rafe has a policy of never getting involved with a client so as not to be distracted from her job. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to resist the attraction.

The contrast between the two women could almost not be greater, the calm, serene and stoic Butch Rafe, versus the bubbly and outgoing femme Jana. But we all know, opposites attract. Add to that, Jana doesn't make it easy for Rafe to protect her, she ignores her guidelines, sometimes she's even almost reckless (or naive), which unfortunately comes across as arrogant. It took her some time to deal with the limited freedom.

The whistleblower story is exciting because it takes courage to bring such a crime to the public. The unraveling of the mystery and finding the connections would have deserved a bit more attention in my opinion. I would have liked to know more. But this part of the story is somewhat pushed aside by the romance.

Rafe and Jana have great chemistry and the attraction was palpable. Again, the differences between the two women are huge, Rafe who spent many years mainly with men in war zones, hardly knows how to deal with her feelings, let alone how to show feelings and how to treat a woman she is interested in. But also Jana is confused, the real threat to her life is terrifying and despite this situation, she feels such a strong attraction for Rafe. Are these real feelings she develops for her or is it more gratitude out of the situation? I love the time these two spend together, whether in action on the run or in togetherness and good conversation. Slowly, Rafe begins to open up and talk about her life, letting down her guard a bit.

The main supporting characters are Bennet and Kerstin from Powell's book «Captian's Choice.». They play an important role here and I was pleased that these two got an appearance here.

Overall this is an entertaining, well-paced romantic thriller.

I definitely liked Deadly Secrets by V.K. Powell. I’ve always been an avid romance reader, but when the author adds in a good dose of mystery and intrigue, the story becomes even better. Top it off with some thrilling danger for the protagonists and set them in close quarters, and you have a novel I am eager to read. That is exactly what the author has given us.

In this novel, our main characters become embroiled in corporate espionage when Jana Elliot is presented with evidence that the company she works for, Alumicor, is breaking the law, damaging the climate, and causing their workers to become sick and die. When Jana begins to suspect she is being followed, she turns to her friends Bennett and Kerstin Carlyle. Bennett convinces Jana to hire newly retired Special Ops Agent Rafe (Rafaella) Silva as a bodyguard until the danger is past. Thus begins an exciting adventure that could also lead to love.

This story is set in the ‘Fairview Station Series’ universe, so those of you who have read the series will recognize many of the secondary characters. The setting of the book is in and around Greensboro, North Carolina as well as the Carlyle vacation house on Badin Lake. An area especially well-described by the author. Rafe and Jana are well-developed. I sometimes wondered about some of Jana’s actions, but they actually fit her character and who she is in the book. The plot is well paced, and there was no lag in the tale.

I totally enjoyed this novel. I recommend it to all who love their mystery and romance all mixed together.

Jana is a corporate VP and is happy with her life. Rafe has just retired from the Army’s Delta Force and now has no life because she doesn’t know what to do with herself outside of the rigid confines of the Army. When Rafe is asked provide protection for a friend of a friend, she reluctantly agrees. Jana has proof that the company she works for has conspired to violate EPA mandates. The violations have, over the years, caused the deaths of many people, including Jana’s own mother. When she rashly downloads archived files, she has drawn attention to herself and alerted the CEO, which put her life in danger. She hires Rafe to protect her. Their mutual friend has put fire and ice together in a confined space – what could possibly go wrong?

Powell has written yet another book that is hard to put down. She ratchets up the tension both between Rafe and Jana and the forces that now want Jana eliminated before she can blow the whistle on the company’s illegal and murderous actions.

The writing is excellent, the characters complex, likable, and strong, and the storyline both believable and well-plotted. What more can you want from a writer?

If you love character-driven stories, this book is for you. If you’re just looking for a good book to read, get this one.

My thanks to BSB for an eARC.

This was an opposites attract, high energy read. Rafe is a nails tough, ex military bad ass. Jana is an outgoing, woman-loving executive. When Jana finds herself in a bind trying to right a wrong, she hires Rafe as a bodyguard. For better or worse it takes about 27 seconds before those well developed personalities start to crumble and the two start to fall for each other. I think the book spans over 4 or 5 days and they were talking kids at the end. However, if you are on board with the insta-love, this was an action packed read when you leave feeling vindicated and like the good guys won!

Jana Elliott has discovered her company has been covering up environmental dumping for years. Now she is out to blow the whistle on them but her boss is not about the let that happen and lose everything.
Jana is introduced to Rafe Silva who has recently retired from the army where her job was to do whatever it takes to keep someone safe. But Jana isn't making her job easy.
As they try to find a safe place to gather information they soon learn they can't trust anyone.
Along the way they'll start to develop feelings for each other. This makes Rafe question whether she can keep Jana safe from danger.

This is a fantastic action packed story that you'll enjoy.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with the arc.

This book wasn't for me. I was excited to read it after reading the synopsis but it wasn't as good as I expected.

Jana Elliott had found her ideal career and a second home within the corporate environment of Alumicor until a coworker dies and Jana suspects the company is covering up a deadly secret. When she starts investigating, her boss quickly shuts her down. Jana is determined to uncover the truth even if it means risking her life. Her friend’s suggestion of a bodyguard seems like overkill, but then Rafe Silva shows up and their irresistible attraction changes everything.

Jana made a lot of bad decisions which I didn't expect from her and the book was very predictable.

Jana Elliot has worked at Alumicor for many years and so did her mother. That was until her mother, Marian Elliot committed suicide two years ago. Now at the funeral for Travis Mills, a co-worker of her mothers she finds that a mysterious box was left to her from her mother. Filled with papers and documents pertaining to the pollution Alumicor has done over the years.
Rafe Silva, Special Ops agent has decided it’s time for her to retire. Most of her career was spent tracking enemies and if necessary eliminating them. Now all she wants is to return to civilian life where she’s hoping for a quiet life.
When word gets to the CEO of Alumicor that Jana has been looking where she shouldn’t be, the company comes after her. They want all the papers back and for Jana to disappear. Luckily she has friends she can go to Police Captain Bennett Carlyle and her wife Kerstin.
It’s Bennett who introduces Rafe and Jana when she realizes Jana needs someone to protect her. For a short time when Rafe was younger she had lived with the Carlyle’s as a foster kid. This connection to the Carlyle’s was the only family she stayed in touch with. Now, after hearing the danger Jana finds herself, Rafe feels it’s her duty to protect Bennett’s friend. Of course the two women are attracted to each other but having lived such different lives can they actually come together?
Ms Powell knows how to write books that you can’t help but enjoy. Great read.

This has been a fairly typical VK Powell story, with a police or intrigue plot, in this case involving a mega-industry and the dark sides of large corporations.

Actually, the intrigue is not very surprising because almost from the beginning it is clear what is there. So, what the story offers is how two very different women, different education, different life choices, meet and connect at a time of great change in their present. It seems that Rafe is too circumspect and not inclined to socialize, while Jana is open and outgoing, totally opposite each other. But Jana is going to find herself in a compromising position much to her chagrin and Rafe can offer her all the means to unravel the doubts that Jana is beginning to have regarding the ethics of her company, falling in love with each other in the process.

And for those of you who know other books by this author, here you will find the protagonists of her series Fairview Station, Bennett and Kerstin, which has been very appreciated on my part.

In general, the development of the plot has been entertaining and quite interesting as a whole.

Jana Elliot is flying high in the business world. And then she is being tipped that her company is dumping waste that contaminates water and is guilty of numerous deaths, even her own mother’s. As she starts investigating she notices strange things happening, like her boss insisting she drops the investigation, returns what is meant to be public information and her office has been searched. Enters Rafe Silva, newly retired Special Forces operative that is tasked with protecting Jana.
As Jana struggles to fully understand the danger she is in she starts falling for her bodyguard and vice-versa. This is an action packed novel that brings back Bennet and Kerstin from Captain’s Choice although it’s not necesarry for that book to be read. A classic Powell I would say, that keeps you entertained.

With VK Powell you know you get a good story with realistic police procedures, good action and a romance thrown in. This one was, however, not one of her best books in my opinions. I really liked the trope of former military bad-ass becoming a bodyguard for a stubborn whistleblower but plotwise there were some incredibilities in the story. Nevertheless, you can't really go wrong with picking up a VK Powell book and I'm sure most readers will enjoy her latest as well.

My true rating is closer to 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed the romance in this book and I truly fell in love with Rafe, Jana, Ben, Keirsten, and Camille as I read. the characters of Jana and Rafe were opposing in the perfect way of opposites attract and conflicting personalities, and it kept the tension and interest high in the right ways. However, the dialogue felt somewhat stilted and formal to me in a way that felt unrealistic. A lot of the times characters seemed to be saying "I am now going to exposit to you" while listing off details in a very formal way. I also wished for more resolution on what happened to Alumicron and Fergus following the public reveal of the findings. It didn't feel like closure was given on those aspects of the story.

For me, there were too many plot points that just didn't pass a basic "does this make sense" test. This was my second VK Powell book and I really want to like her work! Unfortunately what I've read so far hasn't really clicked for me. Powell gets a lot of specific praise for her law enforcement experience lending veracity to her work, but that hasn't been my experience so far-- honestly, the lack of verisimilitude has actually been my biggest issue with her work.

When you read mystery/intrigue thrillers you know you are going to get fast action and a thrown in romance without much depth. Deadly Secrets is exactly that kind of book. Using a close-proximity trope the story the story begins with the retirement of Army Major, Special Ops Agent Rafe Silva. Her old friend and chief of police Bennet suggests Rafe as a bodyguard when another friend is in need of protection. Jana Elliott is VP of Alumicor. Just before a billion dollar merger Jana is handed a shoebox while attending a friends funeral. The box originally came from her now dead mother and may have information that the company is continuing to cover up its deadly polluting ways.

While Jana tries to figure out the information she has attacks against her begin forcing the two to run and hide. The whole action takes place over a few days. Jana is of course her own worst enemy provoking people and not taking seriously the threats against her. Also she inexplicably doesn't open the box with all the clues for a ridiculously long time. The two do try to get to know each other but everything is very instant including expressing of feelings. I did like that Rafe is hesitant to use lethal force and willing to take help from Bennett and her police friends. This is a quick, predictable thriller and I wasn't blown away with the characters or intrigue. Thank you to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Book for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I am a fan of VK Powell's work and Deadly Secrets is another of her exciting reads featuring a woman in uniform and the woman that loves her. It takes place in the same world as Powell's previous Fairview Station trilogy, but you don't need to have read them to enjoy this book.

The two main characters are complex and interesting with fully developed backstories that allow the reader to understand their actions. Rafe Silva is a woman just out of a uniform -- she has retired from the US Army and is coerced by her best friend to take on a protection detail for a corporate whistleblower. Jana Elliott is an EVP of a multibillion-dollar corporation that has conducted business in a way that has put people in danger. The company is planning a merger and any information Jana has discovered could cost it billions of dollars -- the powers that be are desperate to silence her no matter what it takes. Silva and Jana will have to fight for their lives and their growing attraction to each other to survive.

The secondary characters are Bennett and Kerstin from Captain's Choice. They are the crucial link between Rafe and Jana. and it was great to see them again,

This is a fast-paced and exciting adventure through corporate malfeasance and warring emotions. I highly recommend Deadly Secrets.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for the digital galley of this book.

Special Ops Agent Rafe Silva is freshly retired from the Army, and not quite sure what to do with herself. The Army gave her purpose and meaning, and thanks to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, left her without meaningful romantic relationships. When an old friend contacts her about a potential bodyguard job, Rafe is reluctant, and when she meets the beautiful and stubborn Jana Elliott, a business woman at the top of her game who may have uncovered some important and dangerous secrets about her company, she’s even more against it. Jana doesn’t think she needs protecting, but an close call convinces her to hire Rafe, and as Rafe tries to do her job, and those after Jana get closer, the two will have a hard time resisting their growing feelings for one another. They’ll have to stay alive before they can explore their feelings further.

I love VK Powell’s books, so when I saw this one, I snatched it up. It didn’t disappoint. It moves quickly, there’s plenty of mystery and intrigue, and the slow burn romance builds at a great pace as the plot unfolds. I liked the supporting characters, and I was rooting for Rafe and Jana the whole way. I wanted them to uncover the secrets and build their relationship. It’s a classic opposites attract with a little bit of enemies to lovers. Solid combo. Definitely recommend.

VK Powell is one of the few authors where I eagerly anticipate her next book. Yes they all have similarities but that doesn’t bother me as the similarities are grounded in Ms Powell’s police experience and so they always have a “realness” to them. Also she is a very good writer and storyteller. The books are paced well and the characters credible.

In this book Rafe is recently retired from the special forces and looking forward to relaxing but she is asked to act as a bodyguard to a corporate whistleblower. But then you throw in that the whistleblower doesn’t think she needs a bodyguard and isn’t even convinced that there is anything to report and Rafe is reluctant and you have a plot.

The narrative is well handled and ebbs and flows as expected and we see Rafe start to loosen up and Jana is intrigued by the beautiful, mysterious Rafe. A good book to kick back with on a cold evening and just wallow in a bit of suspense, danger, and romance.

You can't beat VK Powell when it comes to a good police story. Even though Deadly Secrets isn't exactly a police procedural, it has the same feel because a company VP is trying to uncover wrongdoing in her town. Her mother had also worked for the same huge aluminum processing plant and ended up dying over the "deadly secrets" of covering up environmental dumping. When she logs on to the company archives to read about things that happened years ago, the CEO tells her to cease and desist. She ends up having to hire a bodyguard for protection.

And this is another installment in the Carlyle family series! Police Chief Bennett Carlyle recommends an old friend, a retired Army Major, for the bodyguard position. She brings a ton of baggage with her and because of her secret position in the Army, she has never allowed herself to be involved in a relationship. And do the sparks fly. This is a classic butch/femme, opposites attract pairing and it really works. I was immersed in the story immediately and read it in two sittings (damned day job).

Intriguing story that reflects some of the environmental concerns related to corporate businesses. While reading, I thought about consumer demand and environmental impact. I also thought about the whistleblowers fighting the good fight. Jana Elliott, living the good life while dealing with the death of her mother. Rafe Silva, retired special Ops Agent dealing with life after serving her country. Two very different women but what they have in common is doing the right thing. My focus was on the romance as Rafe and Jana interact with each other and the intrigue as they "work" together to bring down the bad guys. Enjoyable read with some engaging as well as interesting characters.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. The story line was good it was the small things that just were like paper cuts. Elliot was a mess. For a high-powered executive, she certainly made a boat load of made decisions. Of course, if you took those bad decisions out of the equation, there would not have been much of a story. There are many who might really enjoy it as it is a story with strong women leads but just not for me.

This is an enjoyable read. The bodyguard is suitably moody and hot. The woman she’s protecting is predictably wilful and ignoring of protocols. It’s a tried and tested trope and it works. Mainly because the author clearly knows her stuff. Yes it could do with a bit more menace and I don’t understand why they took so long to actually view the evidence, but overall the story paces along well.

I don't read that many action books, but this felt exciting all the way through! While reading it, I was reminded of movies like Erin Brokovich, The Eraser and The Net - but in book form and sapphic. At times, the plot felt slow. However, the action scenes made up for it and kept my interest. I would definitely recommend this book if you like any of the movies mentioned.

This one had its ups and downs...there are time it's slow, often predictable, but the characters are engaging and it pulls together as an overall good story.
