Catherine grew up reading Little House on the Prairie books, then watched it on TV. She doesn't mind admitting she had a HUGE childhood crush on Charles Ingalls :D

She also watched every episode of The Waltons ever made (she didn't count them but is pretty sure she's watched them all!!).

Next came Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman and another leading man to swoon over(!!), and a wonderful strong female leading character.

It's no wonder that Catherine chose to write Christian historical romances set in the 1860s. Join her in the fictional community of Walton Valley to follow the lives, and loves, of the settlers.

I've never read anything by this author before, but I'll definitely read the subsequent volumes in this series.

The two young girls in this novel are determined to live better lives, which is the subject of the book. Hannah and Eliza were siblings.

I appreciated Eliza's sense of obligation to look after her young sister. Her suggestion to join a wagon train was a smart and timely proposal at the moment. Eliza didn't give up after learning that a single female couldn't board the wagon train. Instead, she asked Thomas for assistance and he consented to marry her.

The narrative is true to life and realistic. This novel was challenging to finish since it had so many unexpected turns, a slow-burning romance, and compelling characters. I enjoyed the way the author wrote. She skillfully incorporates religious themes into the narrative, which flow naturally into the lives of the characters.

There is rape-related content, but there is nothing specific about it. The topic isn't really covered much until the very end of the book.

The story is primarily about love, forgiveness, and starting over. If you're searching for a brief, historical fiction short story, I think you'll like this.

This is a short, sweet story about love and sacrifice.

Eliza takes her duty as a big sister seriously. When her younger sister decides she can handle their uncle's abuse no longer, Eliza will do anything to get them out of the situation, even entering a marriage of convenience with a man she barely knows. She lets her faith guide her as she struggles with containing her growing feelings for her new husband.

After his first wife dies, Thomas can never again risking loving a woman in the same way, even if he did just get married. Thomas soon discovers his feelings for his new wife exceed a simple desire to ensure her safety.

The message about the importance of prayer was refreshing. I particularly enjoyed the part about the importance of accepting God's will and reflecting that in how you pray.

I felt like the story could have used a bit more gradual character development. I would have loved a bit more sweet moments between Eliza and Thomas.

Content warning: One of the characters has been raped by a relative and becomes pregnant. The rape is not shown, only discussed.

I would highly recommend this inspiring book to lovers of Christian romance!

Eliza and her sister are running from a cruel uncle who has committed an unspeakable act. Their uncle has police looking for them everywhere, and Eliza is desperate. In order to join a wagon train and keep her sister safe, she enters into a marriage of convenience with Thomas.

Wagon Train Wife is a meaningful Christian story about taking new chances and starting over after tragedy. This is Book 1 in the Walton Valley series. It was preceded by a novella, His Wagon Train Sweetheart, and characters from the novella make an appearance in this story. It is an entertaining romance that historical fiction fans will enjoy.

"Those things were in God’s plan. I must confess, I cannot understand why He allowed things to happen that caused you to suffer so grievously. But I know that His will is greater than our own.”

This is another great book by Mrs. Kennedy. "Wagon Train Sweetheart" was my first read of hers, and it for sure got me hooked on her books! Also, you'll see cameos of characters
from the first book in this story.

The tale is captivating, squeaky clean, and had an authentic western feel to it that I loved.

The romance and married life aspects were very realistic with all the ups and downs every couple faces.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book, and eagerly look forward to reading the next in this series!

I received a complimentary e-book from the publisher through Booksirens, and was not required to write a postive review. The thoughts and opinions above are my own.

I really liked this little book. Eliza and her sister Hannah have been depending her aunt and uncle since the death of their parents. But when Hannah is assaulted by her uncle, things changed. Hannah takes refuge in a stable where she is helped by a young Irishman.
Eliza realizes they must leave town in a hurry.
Although there is subject matter involving rape, there is nothing descriptive about it. For the most part the subject is not really discussed until very late in the book.
I am a sucker for mail order bride books and this was very clean and tastefully done. I rated the book at 4 stars because there were so many grammatical and spelling errors at the start of the book. Gladly it improved as it went on. I look forward to more books by this author.

Thoroughly enjoyed Wagon Train Wife by Catherine Kennedy. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I will definitely read the next books in this series.

The premise of this story was original and grabbed me from the beginning. Eliza and her sister Hannah are forced to live with a cruel uncle and aunt after their parents die. Their inheritance is basically being held hostage until they reach the age of 21.

After Hannah suffers an unspeakable incident, they decide to run away. Thomas is a blacksmith who finds Hannah hiding in a barn. He brings Eliza to her and agrees to help them join the wagon train heading West. The wagon master refuses to allow the women to go without a husband and so Thomas and Eliza enter into a marriage of convenience to escape her uncle.

Eliza and Thomas have an interesting relationship. Eliza is a smart, strong heroine who is also feminine and thoughtful. Thomas is a kind, caring, strong man who is also guarded. They both are fiercely devoted to family. They both have experienced deep loss. Thomas is willing to offer the protection of his name and support, but he refuses to give his heart to Eliza even though he is attracted to her. Eliza grows to respect and love Thomas and she wants more from their marriage, but will she be able to convince Thomas to let go of his fears?

With plenty of twists and turns, a slow burn romance, and interesting characters, this book was hard to put down. I liked the author’s writing style. She nicely weaves the religious aspects into the story and are a natural part of the characters’ lives. Those who enjoy historical fiction, pioneer stories, and historical Christian fiction would likely enjoy this book. I look forward to reading more by this author. I received a complimentary advance review copy through Book Sirens. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Content warning: There is a rape that takes place, but there is only the mention of it, no graphic details.

Wagon Train Wife, the first book in the Walton Valley Series, is a historical novel tracing life on the wagon trail for novice travelers. But there is also a prequel.

Thomas Flannagan, livery stable operator, finds a very distraught female in a stable at his livery who refuses to leave.

When confronted with her sister Hannah’s seemingly irrational fear of leaving the stable or returning home to their cruel guardians, Eliza Fairchild takes the reins in her hands and figures out a way to protect them.

I respected how Eliza felt responsible for the care of her baby sister. Her idea to join a wagon train was a solid, valid thought for the time. Informed she couldn’t go on the wagon train as a single female, Eliza didn’t back down. Instead, she enlisted help from Thomas, who agreed to marry her.

The story is authentic and realistic. Eliza’s struggles on the wagon train are interesting, and her qualms and worries about her “in name only” marriage are convincing.

Several characters from the prequel are reintroduced, allowing for catching up with their lives.

Overall, the tale is one of love, forgiveness and new life. I felt it to be credible. Although there were several instances of proofreading errors that distracted me from the story, if you’re looking for a quick, historical fiction short story, I believe you will enjoy this one!

The Lady and the Irishman

This story is about two sisters (Eliza and Hannah) and a young Irishman (Thomas). Eliza and Hannah immigrated to the U.S. with their parents from England where they had a sheltered privileged upbringing. When their parents died of Cholera they had to live with their uncle Phillip a cruel man.

Thomas immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland with his father and young bride Anne. When both his father and Anne died he was lost and vowed to never love anyone again.

Thomas and Eliza meet in unusual circumstances. What follows is an enduring story of courage, romance and the mending of the human hearts. Running from the cruel uncle, will the past catch up to them?

I love the first book My Wagon Train Sweetheart and I loved this book Wagon Train Wife. I hope there is a book three about Hannah and maybe Luke?

This is a book of a clean western romance and Christian fiction. Very enduring story, I recommend this book.

Thanks to Catherine Kennedy and Book Sirens for allowing me to read a complimentary copy of the book for my honest review.

A few years ago my husband and I went out west for a vacation.  One of our stops was the trail ruts.  I was amazed to see the ruts made so many years ago by the early pioneers etched in stone.  I stood there and was easily taken back to the days when wagon after wagon took this trail praying for a better future.  They often experienced hardship after hardship to achieve their goal.

This book is about two young girls and their determination for a better life.  Eliza and Hannah were sisters.  They endured much before they even started on this journey.  Did they have what it takes to survive?

Thomas had a plan.  He was saving for his future.  Then he met the sisters and was determined to help them.  But how far would he go?

I enjoyed the book and the strong sense of community displayed in the pages.  It was a rough world and everyone pulled together.  They had each other's' back.

I enjoyed the story and look forward to reading more by this author.

I received this ebook from Book Sirens to give a honest review.

This second installment of the Prairie Brides is absolutely spellbinding! Thomas and Eliza marry so she and her sister can join the wagon train and escape a cruel uncle. Along the way friends are made, lessons are learned, secrets are revealed, and most importantly the two fall in love. It’s journey you’ll definitely want to take with them!

I got Wagon Train Wife (Walton Valley #1) by Catherine Kennedy from BookSirens for a fair and honest review.

Wagon Train Wife is a christen romance novel set in America during the 1860’s and tells the story of Hannah and her Eliza who escape from their aunt and uncle, because of a traumatic event in Hannah’s life.

With the difficulty of leaving the two sisters are aided by Thomas a young man who has suffered his own trauma, aids them to go on wagon train heading west unfortunately the two young girls are unable to go on their own so Thomas marries Eliza to help.

Wagon Train Wife is a closed door romance set around a fake marriage which does its best to explain how a young man marries some one he only met the night before as well as altering his plans. Although it does its best I am not quiet sure it succeeds but it is a romance novel so I will give it some leeway.

The romance between Eliza and Thomas plays out in the way you would expect, but there are some creditworthy lines in their something like he could not speak as he thought that she was so beautiful.

And while Thomas does end up with some dodgy lines along with playing a male lead, in a romance he had slightly above the normal depth usually given for this role

What was one of the great strengths for Wagon Train Wife was the number of additional characters who had more than work on parts did seem to have at least enough depth for the role they played.

With this novel being a Christian novel there are a number of references to this through the book while some of them worked well and did seem like they were part of the story.

There were some which felt like they were over the top for example when Eliza and Thomas got married, Thomas asked the reverent if they could pray, to me if this was a Christian wedding, although done in a rush, would their not it be in the service anyway.

There were other discussions in the book which as someone who comes from a Christian background although not practising did feel a bit over the top for me.

Having said that while the book has a lot of Christian references the story of Wagon Train Wife by Catherine Kennedy still works as a romance novel and well worth reading.

Wagon Train Wife is another excellent book by Catherine Kennedy. It is Book One in the Walton Valley Western Romance Series. I felt this could be a stand-alone book, but I have read the prequel book, His Wagon Train Sweetheart and Wagon Train Wife just builds on the characters from the first book when they get to Walton Valley.
Independence, Missouri is the town where Eliza and Hannah Fairchild find themselves as wards of their uncle since their parents died of cholera. Eliza being two years older than Hannah was always trying to protect her and their aunt and uncle were not very pleasant people to be around. Hannah had disappeared and Eliza was on the search for her when she meets Thomas Flanagan.
Thomas is a tall Irishman who finds himself in a dilemma because he finds a young lady in his stable and he goes in search of help. As it happens, Eliza is able to help because the young lady is her sister Hannah. With the help of Thomas and his friends in the community, he finds a place where the sisters can hide and develops a plan for their safety.
The wagon train going to Sante Fe proves to be the solution for them to leave town. Because the girls are single, the wagon master refuses to let them go on the trail by themselves. Plan B comes into play when Thomas takes Eliza as his wife. They can then depart on the trail with Hannah who is wary of all strangers and is feeling poorly for most of the trip.
Because Thomas and Eliza are strangers having to live together on the trail, there are many conversations of learning who each other are and thanks to some friends that they meet, the girls learn how to cook and manage a household. In the meantime, the uncle has not given up on finding the two sisters and has hired a Pinkerton detective to follow the leads.
The author weaves a delightful historic Christian novel, one that I recommend.

When Sally runs away from the hotel, Eliza thinking it was all her fault goes looking for her. When Thomas delivery worker asked her to follow him she thinks he’s suspicious but at the same time feels like it would be safe to do so and so she does. This is where she finds her sister in the livery stall laying on top of hey and crying. After a private discussion with her sister Eliza beseech is the help of Thomas to help them get away. And after mulling it over in his own head he goes and talks to his good friend the owner of the hotel and she gives them the idea maybe they should marry and go with the wagon train. Even though they’re both having feelings for each other they claim it will be a marriage of convenience I mean Thomas is a nice guy and Eliza is easy on the luxe but their feelings go much deeper than that and their bond will only get stronger with everything they face on the wagon train to Arkansas their main goal of keeping Sally safe. I read the first book in this collection wagon train Baby which was awesome it’s so when I saw this when I couldn’t wait to read it and I am so glad I did. I love books set in the old west and this one as I said it was awesome. I have a big pet peeve and that is historical authors who don’t know their history and I’m happy to say this author doesn’t have that problem. I read the book and noticed no inconsistencies and that could either mean it was so good I didn’t notice them or they didn’t have them at all. I highly recommend this book to any historical romance being especially those who love the marriage of convenience plots this one was a good one a great one I loved it! I received this book from Books sirens and i’m leaving this review voluntarily, it was so freaking good!

After being in a reading slump for months, I came across Wagon Train Wife. Since I loved The Oregon Trail Romance collection, I thought I would give this one a shot. Before reading, I discovered there was a prequel to this book - His Wagon Train Sweetheart. I knew that would be a great place to start to help me out of my funk. Also, being world book day, I knew there would be no better time than the present to start reading again.

This story instantly draws you in and keeps you captivated until the very end. I never thought I would enjoy a marriage of convenience story as much as I did this one. Wagon Train Wife follows the story of elite sisters, Eliza and Hannah - who are trying to flee from their abusive guardians, and Thomas - a man of not so great a social standing, but an admirable Godly man who takes it upon himself to ensure the girls safety.

I can't believe I haven't read much more of this genre, I absolutely love it! The author, Catherine Kennedy, has written this so beautifully. A masterpiece which I highly recommend.

Elise and Hannah Fairchild’s week-to-do parents died and their guardian, Uncle Phillip Fairchild is neither nice nor trustworthy. In fact he has caused Hannah to run away and Eliza is unable to find her. That is, until a lowly blacksmith name Thomas Flanagan approaches Eliza for her help with a lady that won’t stop crying. Eliza is not sure she should go with this man because he is obviously not a gentleman; no gentleman would approach a single lady like that, let alone speak to her.

Eliza decides to follow Thomas to the stable and the lady in distress turns out to be her sister. Hannah won’t tell her what is wrong but it must be something terrible because all Hannah wants to do is run away from her aunt and uncle. The sisters try to join a nearby wagon train but are turned down because they are single ladies. That’s when Thomas comes up with a hare-brained idea, but it just might work!

Although a stand-alone book, Wagon Train Wife eventually builds upon the characters we met in His Wagon Train Sweetheart. I enjoyed this story of the mid-nineteenth frontier not only for its historic value but also because it was a clean and inspirational book.

Eliza and Hannah have lost their parents and have their uncle as their guardian. He holds the purse strings and has them work for him and his wife. The girls are afraid of their uncle.
The story begins with Eliza looking for her sister. Where did she go and why? As she searches for her sister, a man come towards her and asks for her help. A young woman needs a womans help. Could this be a trap? Does someone need her help. Thomas informs Eliza the young woman asked not to send for the sheriff and to help her find her sister. Alas, Eliza realizes it is Hannah and finds her.
Hannah tells Eliza she wants to run away. Thomas helps them get on the wagon train by marrying Eliza, in name only, as single women are not allowed.
This is their story of acceptance, respect, like, and love.
This story is a second in a series, but can be read as a stand alone. I highly recommend this wonderful story.

Eliza and her sister Hannah find themselves in a predicament. Their parents have died and their Uncle and Aunt have guardianship of them. Their Aunt and Uncle aren’t nice to them. But their Uncle does something that puts Hannah in such a turmoil that she won’t go back to their house. Eliza finds Hannah hiding in a barn refusing to go back. As Eliza is trying to coax Hannah that they don’t have a choice in walks Thomas Flannagan, he works in the livery stable.

He introduces himself and commits to help them find a place to stay and a way to escape from their relatives.

As the three of them join a wagon train headed west they have many decisions to make along the way. They decide to go to a new prairie town. In this new prairie town, we meet the people from “His Wagon Train Sweetheart.”

This story was very enjoyable. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Eliza is determined to protect her sister, Hannah. She will do whatever is necessary to ensure her safety even marrying a man she doesn't know.

Thomas Flanagan found a young woman in distress in the stables at the livery. When he found her sister who was searching for her, little did he know his life was about to change forever.

In order to escape their evil uncle, Eliza and Hannah needed to run and get as far away as they possibly could but they needed a man to provide some protection for them. Thomas agreed to be that man so he married Eliza, in name only to guarantee their safe travels to Kansas. What else would be in store for these three as they found a new home in Kansas?

This was a sweet, clean story of how a kind man, Thomas, and sisters, Eliza and Hannah, determined to make the best of a difficult situation. And, in the process, they found family, good friends and love.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

This was pretty cute. I liked most of the side characters and it was nice to see the original Walton Valley settlers again, after the novella that started off the series. Both of the main characters, Eliza and Thomas, made some very impulsive and slightly illogical decisions throughout the book, so they were a little difficult to connect to. If the book were longer, I feel like the characters' decisions could have been expanded on a little more and the ending, especially, might not have felt so rushed. I mean, the main driving force behind most of the conflict in the story - the reason why Eliza and her sister needed Thomas's help and took the wagon train in the first place - was just sort of tied up in the epilogue.

This is a nice romance with a Christian background especially amongst the wagon train pioneers. The two sisters Eliza and Hannah have come to America from England but due to the sad death of their parents , they come under the guardianship of their controlling Aunt and Uncle and have to escape from their clutches as a result of cruel abuse which leaves Hannah traumatised.

They meet the kind and generous Thomas who makes a life changing offer to help them in their distress. They join the wagon train pioneers who are all looking for new opportunities and new lives in the West. They will make kind friends along the way and all their lives will change irrevocably.

I felt Eliza's and Hannah's distress and hoped all along that Thomas and Eliza would make a "proper" marriage.

I enjoyed it and I will read the next book.

Thank you.

Eliza and her sister, Hannah, had lived a not so good life with their aunt and uncle after the death of their parents. Would the help of a kind stranger help the sisters travel far away from their troubles help them both see that they can love again?

This was a sweet wagon train love story which revisited the new settlement of Walton Valley that readers were introduced to the founding of in the previous novel. It could easily be read as a standalone and enjoyed without having read the previous novella.

The characters and storyline were well developed and believable with a happily ever after type of ending. I will be continuing the series. There was an instance of a continuity issue that jumped out at me during my reading but it did not take away from the story itself.

'Wagon Trail Wife' is an entertaining and informative romance, thought it does have some minor editing issues. Kennedy explores love, trauma, and religion in an accurate historical setting. The customs and events of the times are well represented and ensnare the reader in colonial America; similarly, the Christianity of the characters and the author herself enhance the setting.
Kennedy writes a well-developed romance and ensures that her characters have many other intricate relationships. The main characters portray Godliness that the readers should aspire to, and throughout the novel Kennedy shows another rarity - correct Christian doctrine.
I thoroughly enjoyed 'Wagon Trail Wife. I would highly recommend this novel to any romance or history enthusiast; Christians or to young woman as a model for Christian relationships.

I just want to gush about Wagon Train Wife! This was an unexpected treasure that felt like I’d been plunked into the crosshairs of history when America was beginning its westward expansion and people from around the world were coming to what would become the mixing bowl of cultures.

Eliza and her sister, Hannah, were brought from the gentile England to America by their parents who died from cholera leaving them in the “care” of their wicked uncle. When circumstances necessitated their need to run away quickly, Eliza met Thomas, a handsome, young Irishman, who befriended her and tried to help them join the Santa Fe bound wagon train. Single women weren’t allowed to travel west. So what were they to do? How could they escape their evil uncle?

Read on and enjoy every bit of this sweet story!

A dedicated sister makes personal sacrifices to protect and care for her only sister. When they have to flee from danger, a stranger offers help when he sees how far this brave woman is willing to go for her family. I like the positive relationship of the sisters that is free from petty jealousies or rivalries. The stranger's character is above reproach with gentlemanly behavior toward the two women even though he claims to be no gentleman. His sacrifice matches that of Eliza's as they embark on a journey together. I enjoyed seeing the relationships develop in this sweet story where strangers become family.

This is a book you really should read.
The first question is what happened to Hannah. Then what happened would lead to a marriage in name only for Eliza and Thomas so the girls could run away on a wagon train. A great deal happens in the first few pages of the book. This was really well-done piece showing the highs and lows that the characters had to endure. I loved the characters in the first book of the series and with the addition of the ones in this book Walton Valley is becoming a splendid place to visit. Do not worry if you have not read the first book this is a stand-alone but reading the first book will give you so much more understanding of these characters and their community. I received this book for free from Booksiren and voluntarily chose to review it.

Their inheritance was put under the uncle’s control and he and his wife abused that control. He assaulted Hannah leaving her traumatized and very fearful. Thomas works at the livery and finds Hannah hiding there and brings Eliza to comfort and help her. Thomas offers Eliza a marriage of convenience as protection for both girls. You will enjoy discovering how they find their forever home and also their happily ever after.
