This book reminded me a lot of Killing Sarai by J.A. Redmerski, which is a 5star without a doubt. And I don’t like to compare but it is hard not to.
This book was really good and the plot was refreshing but in my opinion the author should have taken everything to the next level. The revenge Michael and Trevor did fell flat, I wanted to see more of the insight on how they did everything and see more suffering from their victims. I wanted more rage from Meredith, I felt like she gave into Michael kinda easily, she didn’t made him grovel as much
I have to add that the prologues and epilogue were actually a really cool detail that added memorability to the book since I haven’t seen anything like that.
I LOVED this story. LOVED LOVED LOVED. I love Whitney G but this was a departure for her. a little darker but still with her own unique voice. I really loved how she broke the fourth wall and had the guy speak directly to the reader in the prologues of all the books and the epilogue in the last one.
I enjoyed this trilogy but I didn’t love it. The story and characters needed to be taken to the next level. There are some dark moments, but they could have been a lot darker. This couple spent more hating each other than together, and I did not really feel the chemistry between them. Maybe from Merideth but not Michael. I usually love this troupe.. hot rich hero but Michael fell short for me. Still and enjoyable read.
I wish that the GR star ratings were more flexible, because I’d like to give this a higher rating, but I can’t. Let me explain. I think that many self published authors have wonderful stories and are exceptional writers, but because their works lack the polish of professionally published works, I’m not able to hold them to the same standards. But how does that translate to star ratings? I still don’t know. I try my best to be fair and not take editorial issues out on authors who don’t have the benefit of an editor. But I also can’t lower the bar for those authors who do have the benefit of an editorial team. 🤷♀️
This novel should be a full four stars. It was a very good plot with excellent pacing and, as usual for this author, fantastic dialogue. However, it needed some fine tuning and finessing to get it where it needed to be. I think I mentioned in an earlier review of this author’s work, that I wished she had an editor. That wish still holds true. If she did, I think her work would be exceptional.
Many readers take issue with alternating past and present tense. It usually doesn’t bother me but in this book the hopping was a little distracting. Again, a good edit would have smoothed out these humps in the storytelling. I wasn’t always certain where in the past tense the author was dropping me so it took some time to get my head in the game. But once I did, the writing was fluid again and it wasn’t a big enough issue to ruin the storytelling.
I adore the characters Whitney G creates. Her men are broken and gritty and alpha-holes with a conscience. Her women are self assured and strong and no nonsense. This novel didn’t fail in that regard. Meredith and Michael did not disappoint and I quickly loved them both.
All in all, this was a well written book by an author who’s got tremendous potential to do so much more.
One of the most intense books I’ve read , and I loved every single page. Outstanding characters and addictive storyline. One you hate to put down. Definite triggers for some people I would think, but I was ok with it . Brilliant reading!
While this book was different than what Whitney usually writes, it was still amazingly well written. The book contains people who are survivors of a horrible act, but it doesn't go into detail about that act.
The story is about a victim turned hit man that falls for a target. Whitney's books are automatic downloads for me and this was still a page turner despite being a different feel and genre. I wanted more stories from the secondary characters.
-King Of Lies (3.8 stars) Meredith Thatchwood has run from her husband. Michael Anderson isn’t who she thought he was. Cold, ruthless, manipulative and the king of liars. This is a short serial that ends on a cliffhanger. It’s told from past and present to see how they first met. An interesting start for this seemingly darkish story. Nothing is what it seems in this one. A little slow to start for me but I’m looking forward to see what happens from that ending. Told in dual POV
-Queen Of Lies (5 Stars) Book 2 in the Empire of Lies trilogy begins where the jaw dropping cliffhanger left off. Michael Anderson, the antithesis of a hero is back! He isn’t who you think he is but neither is the feisty Meredith Thatchwood! She will stop at nothing for her freedom but at what cost? When the truth starts to come out what will happen between these two? This is a fantastic followup to King of Lies and has so much more suspense, lies and twists. I really enjoyed Meredith’s spirit and cannot wait for the final book in this trilogy. May I also add that prologue was epic!! Ends in another crazy cliffhanger and Told in dual POV
-Legacy Of Lies (5 Stars) The third and final book in this suspenseful trilogy is here and it does not disappoint! What will happen to Michael and Meredith? With how things left off in Queen of Lies can Meredith finally discover the full truth? Will Michael truly be able to be redeemed? So many twists and suspense you have to see what happens. A great dark romantic suspense. Michael is a true anti hero. Told in dual POV
Wow was this different! Talk about a unique storyline! I really really liked this book. The characters were so different and it was just nothing like a typical romance book. I would definitely recommend it.
These books brought me so much joy in a moment when I couldn't get through 2 chapters of any other book. I was a in a bad reading funk for a couple months when I found this series. I devoured all of the books in a weekend. I can't recommend them enough.
My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐ Type: Trilogy. This book consists of all 3 books in one. Genre: Contemporary Romance Fiction, Romantic Suspense Narration Style: Dual POV Primary Characters: Michael & Meredith
I have read several books of Whitney before and I generally pick her books whenever I'm in mood for some light reads. Somehow, I struggled to be really invested in this.
King of Lies – Book/Episode 1
Firstly, the story starts off in present, where Meredith tries to escape from her husband and gets caught by him who has kept her captive. He has created a situation where he has made the world believe she has disappeared on her own. Story then winds back to the beginning to explain how that happened.
Meredith is an heiress; she is now working as an assistant and takes another side job on the weekends sometimes. She hasn’t touched her inheritance for a reason. She is still recovering from the loss of her mother. She finds someone on Tinder and they go back & forth and finally meet face to face. Michael owns a popular club in the city and does some shady business along with that. When Meredith questions Michaels credibility on tinder, they meet face to face and hit off.
It’s a short story and lagged seriously in relationship building. They just hit off based on physical love. But we get to know more of Michaels motive here.
Queen of Lies - Book/Episode 2
Even this book toggles between past and present. We see Michael motives and interest in Meredith in book 1. He has kept his shady part hidden from his wife. Meredith has her own secrets. I loved the way she tries to escape the captivity of her husband. Her attempts were appreciable. Some escape instances really made me laugh out loud. She isn't aware why she is captive yet.
Meredith's secrets came as a surprise. This book lagged in depth of character and plot. Trevor and Michael backstory at the end of this book solidified the plot, but still lagged in intimate connection between protagonists. There are no intriguing secondary characters apart from Trevor. Plot moved in fast pace as it’s a short read.
Legacy of Lies - Book/Episode 3
Michael reveals his secrets and tell Meredith about the situation of why she is being captive and finds a solution of his own to help her in his own way. Michael even reveals that he is aware of secrets. Now that they are aware of each other's lies and problems, they have work together to solve it or get separated. Well, you can guess how it ends. Yes, in this last installment all questions are answered and sticky situations are solved.
Bottom line – It’s a short, fast paced story with some twists and turns. If you are a Whitney fan, then you can read this without any inhabitation and expectation for one-time entertainment.
Well I have no idea what just happened, but I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Michael and Meredith are hot but an odd couple, from the moment they met on Tinder (sort of) to end of the book.
The book goes back and forth between the past and present, so we see how our couple came to be and who they are now. There were so many red flags when it came to Michael and his steady pursuit of Meredith, but in a way he was also sweet.
However, Michael isn’t what he seems and the job he shares with his brother, Trevor, isn’t exactly a regular 9 to 5. Michael is in Meredith’s life for a reason and now we know what that reason is.
To be honest, I was very suspicious of 1 person in particular from the beginning and now I that individual is very shady and sick.
I can’t wait to see what happens in Queen of Lies.
Queen of Lies (Empire of Lies #2) - 4 stars
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book (given by the author)...
We finally get to learn more about Michael and his brother, Trevor, and what led them to what they do. It is heartbreaking and tragic and can’t wait till they finish their list.
Michael finally reveals the truth to Meredith, but Michael being Michael, does what he thinks is best without asking Meredith. I can’t wait to see how their story ends because there is so much going on.
I will say in the beginning of this novel, the back and forth from the present and past was a bit confusing. We are given more glimpses into their relationship that we saw on chronological in King of Lies, but now we are getting scenes we didn’t see or were aware of; so it did get confusing when random scenes were pulled from nowhere.
Legacy of Lies (Empire of Lies #3) - 4.5 stars
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book (given by the author)...
4.5 stars
I did not want this book to end!! This book picks up where we left off in Queen of Lies, Meredith is Mexico and Michael is back in New York.
I was wondering if Michael’s conscience would bother after leaving Meredith, and I was so NOT disappointed. I love Meredith and Michael together especially when the truth is finally known.
This book was very satisfying after all the twists and betrayals. Meredith and Michael were mad for each other and no matter how much Michael tried he couldn’t shake his feelings for Meredith.
Okay so honestly I wanted her father and aunt to suffer so much more even though they did get their punishment; I wanted to see their suffering because they are vile people.
I would have liked to have seen the reunion between Meredith and her very special person. Also I would have loved to have see our couple in their new line of work.
Loved this series and can’t wait to see what happens in the Sinful Saints Series.
This book, or should I say series, was great! I didn't expect to like it so much at the beginning but for one reason or the other it just wouldn't let me go. 😆
It isn't the typical romance story where everything comes easyly or where the Heroin changes the Hero for the better. Its kinda dark but with just the right amount of romance that it makes reading it worthwhile.
The fact that the story changed between timeliness and you didn't get the whole picture, especially of Michael's past, untill later in the book made reading it even more interesting.
Hers not the typical Hero and she's also not the typical Heroin but in the end all that kinda makes this story so perfect.
The only thing I missed dearly was a little more info about their relationship up until their wedding. The parts we get to hear about are mostly from the beginning of their relationship and then from after he kidnapped her. Well I'd at least would have liked to hear a little bit about their wedding itself.
If I have to say which part of those books I liked the most I'd have to say the Prolouges. Don't get me wrong the story itself was great but the Prolouges where Michel directly speaks to us readers just made my day.😍
BTW you definitely hav to try listening to the audiobook because these two amazing narrators turned this story into an even better peace.
All in all it was an amazing read and I'd totally recommend it especially to those that got bored of, or nead a break from, reading the typical romance story.
Thank you for this wonderful episodes Whitney G! I absolutely LOVE Whitney G books! This story is different from any other books she had wrote. This story is captivating, interesting, dark, and intriguing. In the beginning of each episodes or book I laugh out loud so much that my hubby was looking at me crazy!😂😂😂 Each book gets better every page. I was hooked and pulled into Whitney G world. I'm super happy she published these books. Meredith is a beautiful and damaged heiress that is dealing with life. She's young, intelligent, funny, and sweet. I love her throughout the story. Michael is also a damaged soul because of his childhood. Michael and his twin brother Trevor is not the guys to play with. I love Michael from the start because he will let you know exactly what's on his mind. When Meredith and Michael meet it's exciting and the sparks fly. What will happen next? I suggest you one click it and I promise you won't be disappointed! AMAZING Work again Whitney G😘 Can't wait for your next release💞
Bk 1 OMG. This book sucked me in! I'm so glad Whitney went in a different direction with her writing as this story had me on the edge of my seat. I LOVED the cliffy and I can't wait for the next two installments.
Bk 2 While this one only had a slight interest for me compared to the first book, I still need to know what happens in the final installment in this series!
Bk 3 I will say this part of the book was better than its predecessor "Queen of Lies." I just think the reason behind the whole thing was only ok. Some of the arguing felt a bit childish sadly, for me. I will still continue to read Whitney's books its just that this one didn't work out for me.
I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This definitely isn't my favorite of her work but it's the first set of books I've sat down to read in a little while and it made me laugh. Still anticipating her coming releases. Can't wait.
Favorite quotes:
“Because I have deep and severe closure issues.”
“Pay for your own cookies, bitch.”
"I like you. I’m outside in my car. Come out and fuck me once you’re done. (Is this ‘romantic’ enough for you?)"
Book 2 quotes:
“You can’t make love to a cold corpse.” “No, but I’m tempted to turn you into one, if you don’t stop flirting with me…”
Book 3 quotes:
“I also know that if we ever get caught, you’ll do all the prison time and leave me out of it.” “I will…” I laugh and move down to the floor, pulling her on top of me. “After we fuck, let’s get to work…”

A deviation from Whitney G's steamy romances, this thrilling trilogy is all things amazing. Suspenseful, steamy, dark, heart racing, I could go on! It's one of those stories that makes you go "Holy S#!t" and turn the pages faster and faster. I did NOT see that coming and I am HERE for it! I loved every minute of this trilogy. From the start, as stated, the story is not what it seems. It's not a romance, it's so much more! Dark and intense, steamy and seductive. It kept me on my toes and I enjoyed it from start to finish. I'm actually REALLY glad I waited until the Legacy of Lies was getting ready to release because I might have had a meltdown if I hadn't been able to pick up the next one and find out what happens!
I'm on a Whitney G. kick and am loving it. This series was very different and so much darker than I anticipated. I had contemplated stopping after the first, but I needed more. These characters were wild but great.
from King of Lies: "'Ahhhhh! Oh my god! It's an emergency!'"
from Queen of Lies: "'Help me...' he whispers. 'Help me move him...Help me get them all back."'
from Legacy of Lies: "Please know, right now, that none of that sh*t will happen, And that isn't a spoiler"
Maybe I’ve watched too many crime shows and movies. The series started in a very unique way. I understood that there were three parts, so when the first ended, I was excited to keep going. The idea of a hitman saving his mark was very interesting. But as it went on, I wanted more detail, more insight. The story was very surface level and i would’ve enjoyed more detail into both characters’ lives. As the third installment began, I expected more than the predictable ending that happened. The rest was so twisted that I was hoping for a twisted ending too. I was entertained, but I had hoped for more. Still a worthwhile read!
I was in a mood for something darker and twisted. When I saw this one narrated by Joe Arden and Muffy Newtown I was sold. This was an interesting read. I loved all the prologues, they were a fun addition. I also liked how we got all different timelines for this story. As for the plot I was curious and engaged from the start. Meredith and Michael had amazing chemistry together.
Only thing I'm taking the star for is that the 3rd book was a little OTT for me. Everything crazy that could happened was there, and I just rolled my eyes a bit too much. But overall it was an interesting story, and for me the narration made it even better.
Empire of Lies Whitney G I like Whitney G’s sense of humor and easy style. The author makes a statement at the beginning of this one that admits this mini-series is not like her usual writing, but she loved the intent and the characters, so she went with it. Who am I to deny an author the right to step out of her genre?? But, as an avid reader, I would tell WG that she should be bolder if she dabbles again. This not quite mystery/suspense, not quite romance failed to evoke tension in either realm. It didn’t take long for me not to care about solving anything, and the romance didn’t even make sense. Sigh. A lot of potential for a “good girl” and “the devil,” but it was squandered. Shame.
Honestly, this book is a masterpiece! The author is a true poet, and their writing is exceptional. I devoured this book in no time; I tried to stop several times to go to sleep, but it was simply impossible. The story’s ending is gripping, filled with action and mystery, and truly unique. I've read hundreds of similar stories, but this one stands out from the rest.
The two main characters are absolutely fascinating: a charismatic alpha and a powerful heroine who can hold her own against him. Both carry the scars of a broken past, and their chemistry is mesmerizing. They mirror each other, complement each other, and take us on an emotional whirlwind.
