Those words have been ringing in Faye’s head ever since the ink dried on her new publishing deal. Facing the most significant stretch of writer’s block she’s ever encountered, Faye finds the words on her page as nothing but passionless dribble. Desperate for answers, Faye checks herself into a notorious haunted house where she hopes to reignite the muse within. But again, those words ring in her head: Be careful what you wish for.
Maisie came looking for her sister April who disappeared a few months ago, and she wanted to buy the haunted house, but Faye bought it first. Great mystery, killings, and hauntings.
I have read several books by this author that I liked but, unfortunately, in my opinion, this book was just silly. The actions of the main character was so unbelievable that I found myself irritated rather than enjoying the book. I will try other books by this author as I have liked some of her other books.
This book has potential; I vacillated between 2.5 and 3 stars but you see how that worked out. The three stars are for many of the ideas that permeate this story. It is a decent mystery and that is not difficult to follow; the culprit is easy to identify, though Hazel Holmes tries to throw you off track. Also, there are not many characters in the book. Nevertheless, when characters are speaking, not all dialogue is not set off by quotes. As a result, readers may think that it is a stream of consciousness. Additionally, anticipate repetition. Both Maisie and Faye say the same thing. For Maisie, it is finding her sister, the person(s) responsible, and living in her sister's space. For Faye, it is finding inspiration and talking to people "who get it".
“I’d love to read something you’ve written sometime. If you’d like to share it. I know sharing that kind of thing can be scary and leave you feeling vulnerable at first. So, no pressure, of course.” “That’s so true,” Faye said. “It’s so nice to talk to someone who gets it. Sharing what you’ve written can be scary and vulnerable, especially when you haven’t been published yet and aren’t used to it. Maybe I can share it with you sometime, though.
Along with lacking quotation marks, there are many errors that need editing. For example, “Let her ago,” and "You’ve seen the beauty that the extreme emotions I orchestra creates.” These are just a couple; however, more permeate the book. Furthermore, some portions are choppy and incoherent, especially at the beginning of a few chapters.
As previously stated, the story is not difficult to follow. When the Scooby-Dooesque scene occurred, I considered stopping. For persons familiar with Scooby-Doo, the villains usually say, "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!" Well, something similar to this occurs between Faye and the actual killer. The irony is that, up until that moment, Faye was still clueless.
It's not the type of novel that will keep you guessing, but I cannot guarantee that you will be angry with Faye.
Hmmm. 20 words or more... there were a few typos but not enough to mess up the story. Am I reading too much when my reviews are about grammar and not content? I really don't like to tell about the story so you can get your own impressions...
The storyline was interesting but the writing was so repetitive, she took a thought then wrote it over and over. I ended up just skimming through the pages. There was an awful lot of mistakes as well. The plot was good enough for me to finish it, but I most likely won't choose this author again.
The plot had potential, however the writing was repetitious. A pass with and editor could have eliminated some of the redundancy. Faye and Maisie each move to the same new town for different reasons. They become friends and help each other with their respective issues.
This book gets award for most predictable. You know who is who right after the characters are introduced. I read a lot by this author and sometimes she gets a better review. It seemed like she was in a rush to get this out - no twists and turns, no big surprises.
The idea of the 2 women coming together as friends was great and the outcome wow. The journey was a bit predictable. I did like it though and would love to read more books written by Hazel.
I just love ghost stories. Especially the good ghost. It is wonderful to see the good ghost who help the living. This book is highly recommended. Loved it
