The David Lynch atmosphere- not as creepy though, mind you-thickens. Hints and clues are given but do they help solve the mystery surrounding Reiko? Well... no. But they cleverly maintain the reader’s interest. Mine at least.

Reiko and Hajime characters are subtly developed. Reiko shows her frailties while Hajime gains an aura of sad maturity. He obviously knows something but what, and to what extent? As for Miyuki’s endgame... beats me for now.

Still bathed in nostalgia and fantasy, Kowloon is a truly different romance deserving attention.

The story is getting quite surprising, and I’m not sure it’s my fave, but it’s still interesting. Most importantly though, the atmosphere in this manga is so good and gives me feelings I’ve never felt reading a book before. If you love the feel of a Wong Kar-wai movie, this is the manga for you. Each page is just so lovely to look at and bursting with life. This series is for the sad romantic girlies (me).

This entire manga is just.. unsettling.

Still not entirely sure why it’s rated mature and wrapped though.

This feels like it can’t possibly end well. It has a pretty obvious devil analogue, for one thing, and it reveals so much this volume while also not revealing much of anything at all.

I was shocked when the truth, or at least what seems like the truth, came out about Reiko and how straightforwardly it was dealt with. Kudou has some things to say about it, but the implication here is that almost everybody knows more than Reiko and even she knows more than the reader.

On the one hand, this is all unabashedly crackers. Hebinuma is extra on top of extra, things are always mystery wrapped up in more mystery. Even the way I’m forced to write about this seeks to preserve a story that I don’t yet understand myself.

Yet this story sells itself so well. It is grounded in the moment. In the gorgeously grimy and lived-in world of Kowloon, in the day-to-day of its people. It makes every odd thing, like a field of sunflowers, stand out and sometimes at very odd angles.

It is calculated in its obfuscation and revels in what it lets slip and what it piles on top of its revelations. While it can sometimes get a bit much, there are probably more doppelgängers in this story than are strictly necessary, it maintains a core that I definitely enjoy.

The real danger here, and it is very real, is that all this delicious set-up will come to absolutely nothing and not pay off. You can only ladle on so many things before the core gets crushed. It’s a worry I constantly have with this book.

4 stars - come for the atmosphere, stay for the questions you might get an answer to. This won’t be for everybody, but it is well worth reading and seeing if you like it. I can see it becoming somebody else’s favourite pretty easily.

The relationship between Reiko and Kudou continues. By paying attention to clothing, it's possible to see that events are told out of order and that potentially huge gaps exist between scenes despite them seeming to flow naturally together. I'm reminded of the way time is played with in the first season of Westworld.

Volume four stalls a little bit, but it keeps the nostalgic mysterious atmosphere that is the trademark of this manga series.

We get to know a little bit more on the alleged bad boy of this story, Miyuki, and get frustrated with Reiko's refusal to have some questions answered by Kudou, which shows us a slightly more sad and mature version of himself in this volume.

Still interested to know what is going on in this enigmatic universe of Kowloon.

Comunque sempre eccezionale.

Emotions felt sharper and more exposed in this volume. The moment Kudou said “I hate you,” my heart absolutely shattered. 💔 It wasn’t hate. It was the weight of all the feelings he had been suppressing finally slipping through. I froze on that page.

Another striking moment was the conversation between Guen and Kujirai. It hurt, yet somehow brought pieces together. We’re getting closer to the truth, but everything is still veiled in fog. This blend of mystery and emotion is what makes the series so compelling.

The characters’ feelings are raw and clear—and they hit like a punch. 🕊️

Even though this has nothing to do with Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, that's where my mind keeps going. Truly, they are all mad in Kowloon.

I am so happy I picked up this series randomly. It's been such an interesting story with beautiful art and atmosphere. True to its promise of nostalgia, these pages are dripping with it.
