"One Night Burn" is a free prequel to Kate Meader's newest release, "Up in Smoke," which kicks off the Hot in Chicago Rookies series. The prequel is included as the first five chapters of the book so it's not a requirement to read it in advance, but it is a great way to preview the book before buying.
Abby Sullivan and her friends Sam and Jude have just graduated from the Chicago Fire Department's training academy and are about to begin working as full-time firefighter candidates. After a night of celebration with her friends, Abby decides to head home early, stopping at her favorite diner for pie along the way. Unfortunately, single dad Roman Rossi has just ordered the last piece, but after seeing Abby's disappointment, he's happy to share it with her. They hit it off and Roman ends up walking Abby home; they exchange phone numbers and a hot kiss, but not their real names, before going their separate ways. They're shocked to see each other again just a few days later, when Abby reports for her first day on the job and learns that Roman is her new lieutenant.
I really enjoyed this prequel and felt like I got to know main characters Abby and Roman in a relatively short period of time. I'm already invested in their relationship and look forward to finding out where their story goes from here.

At 45 pages, I can guarantee you will zip right through this short prequel for book 1, folks, and will want to be thrown right back into the flames where it picks up seamlessly in Up in Smoke. Included in the prologue of that book, you won't miss a single second as Abby and Roman's cute, fated to first meet morphs into a "will they or won't they" relationship dilemma. Currently halfway through Up in Smoke, I can attest the leisurely pace is ensuring they gradually are getting to know each other first.
That's all fine by me, btw. I prefer a main couple who is gifted time to develop a meaningful connection.

Roman. Wow. I swoon just thinking his name. Roman and Abby spark off each other from the get go. He is trying so hard to put his family together, to keep them together, to do the right things. Abby just wants to prove herself, to be the best, to make her mom proud and her dad eat his words. She wants to be more than...more than good, more than enough. Their story is intense, it is emotional and it is fun and it is tense. I love her friends, her aunt and cousins, her best friends. His sister is brave and sweet and meddles. His daughter is cute and sweet and finding her way. The storyline is internet and pulls you in. The writing is well done with fully developed, realistic characters. Great story.

Abby has just graduated as a fire-fighter but instead of clubbing with her friends she wants to visit her local diner for a slice of pie. When she gets there however the last slice of pie has already been sold to a guy sitting at the counter.
Roman is a single dad, after a disastrous date he's consoling himself with pie at the diner when a cute woman persuades him to share the last slice. They bond over pie but the night only ends in a gentle kiss.
When Abby starts work at the Fire Station where her mother was stationed (before she died) she is astonished to see that Roman is her commanding officer.
This is a freebie novella prequel to a new series. It was cute and sweet and probably gives you a good insight into the characters.

Too short, but what a delicious intro to the new series. I am already excited to get to see these three get their HEAs, and yeah, love the Grey's Anatonmy-ish set up for Abby. We get a bit of time with the Firefightin’ Dempseys too.

This prequel gives us hints to an age gap, single dad, forced proximity, grumpy sunshine, and all the workplace tension. It seems there is potential for conflict with Abby's dad in the next book, who I'm already not a fan of and haven't even met him.

A good teaser to the upcoming book. Female and male firefighters. Had a meet-cute that looked promising for more. Now he is her lieutenant as rookie of her first firehouse. There is also hints of her wanting to follow in her famous firefighter mother's footsteps. And Roman's has a kid. So all this rolls into a good juicey story. Looking forward to the series.

We get to meet Abby, Sam & Jude as they graduate from firefighter training and get their station posting.

A Homecoming
Oh, how I missed my beloved Engine 6.
As a long time Kate Meader fan, picking up this little novella feels like a home coming in the best of ways.

Just go ahead and read Up in Smoke. This is the prequel, and it's a clever title, but the full book is a five-star read so I suggest you have it queued up and ready to start as soon as you finish this one.
