Cumbria, 1944: as Christmas comes to Mary Vale, mothers and midwives alike seek a miracle . . .
Newly trained midwife Libby is just starting work in the neighbouring villages as well as at the Mother and Baby Home. She's inexperienced, but so many new mums are desperate for her help.
Meanwhile, Margaret arrives at Mary Vale heartbroken after losing her man and facing having a child alone.
Yet it isn't long before Libby and Margaret discover someone with bigger problems. Beth, along with her young children and desperately ill husband, face eviction from their home just before Christmas.
Can Libby and Margaret save Beth and her family with a quick-witted plan and some festive magic.
After all, it's Christmas . . . and a time for miracles.
I’ve been slowly making my way through this series of books as I was so hung up after I finish the bomb girls by the same author and this was the next best thing! I’ve loved getting to know this cast of characters and watching them develop as the books went on.
Can’t believe I’ve finally reached the end! I’ve been waiting for December to arrive to read this one and then got swamped but just managed to sneak it in before the festive feeling left me. So glad I managed this one as it was so heartwarming! Just what I needed.
I’ve always found with these books (and all of daisy styles others) that they’re just so easy to read. They’re a great escapism and she always gets her tone spot on for these heartbreaking but endearing wartime stories. Getting to know new characters and their stories has always been so drawing with these and I’m definitely going to need a new series to fill the hole this one will have left behind!
I loved Libby, our new midwife and getting to see all the happy endings for the new residents at Mary Vale completely swelled my heart. This might have been my favourite of all 5 books and I raced to see if there are any more but I think this is the last. Weep! But it’s left at such a happy point, I’m glad to have read all of these as they’ve just been truly great!
This is book #5 in the Wartime Midwives series. Whilst it’s part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone book. I have to admit I haven’t read any of this series, although I have read other books by this author which I have enjoyed. The book is based in Cumbria towards the end of the Second World War, and features Mary Vale, a mother and baby home. Libby is a new midwife and has just started working not just at Mary Vale, but in surrounding villages. I liked Libby, she’s a lovely character. I really felt for her, having to take on such big responsibilities at such an early stage of her career.
This was a lovely wartime read. The characters were well written, likeable and easy to relate to. The location was good and helped gave it a festive feel. There was a romantic interest but I didn't feel it was the main topic of the book and I also liked the friendships, families and relationships which were throughout the storyline. It was a heart-warming read, portraying the lives of midwives and their patients during that era. I will definitely be reading the other books in the series to catch up with the wartime midwives!
~Lovely story but obvious mistake in the book description.~
This book was given to me as a gift and is actually the first book in this series that I've read.
Really enjoyed it and look forward to reading the rest.
The only bug bear is the mistake in the description at the back of the book.. "Beth, along with her young children and desperately ill husband, face eviction from their home just before Christmas." This particular character is called a different name in the story and Beth is actually a completely different character so not sure how the blurb was published with that mistake.
I know I said her previous book was the best I've changed my mind. This book series just keeps on getting better and better! This has a bit of everything in it from dodgy dealings, baddies, goodies, babies etc. I hope there are more in this series as I'm not ready to say goodbye to Mary Vale and her wonderful staff just yet!
I have loved the whole midwife series about Mary vale, it's so nice to read a book that's just warm and no sex or violence or swearing in it like some books which is completely unnecessary
Heart warming and suspenseful with a happy ever after ending. This book follows the trials and tribulations of several women brought together by chance, who become firm friends after facing horrific situations together.
This is book 5 in the Mary vale series I’ve loved every book following the lives of the lovely midwives and sisters each book introduces new characters I just hope there will be a book 6
A brilliant Christmas story full of sadness and joy in equal measure. I've always felt that this series was like a prequel to 'Call the Midwife' and this one really hit the spot.
Yet, another brilliant read in the The Wartime Midwives stories. A really wonderful read. I really enjoyed the story and characters. This is a great series of books I have read all five. Hopefully No.6 is on its way.
