Death by the Seashore

A clock is counting down, but Waverly Windswept doesn’t know it…yet. She’s too busy coping with a breakup, figuring out her life, keeping a side eye on her hopefully redeemed sister, and oh-yeah, collecting the clues to find a buried fortune that could make a snarky-witch rich.

But then a corpse washes up on the Isle of Mer, the body of a VIP to the island’s survival, and Waverly is swept up in a tsunami of sinister con-games, obsessed cult followers, and snooty, scheming suspects happy to commit murder to make their deepest desires come true.

There’s a bigger game with mortal consequences happening, and to win it, Waverly must become the witch she’s meant to be—or die trying.

Waverly's Adventures . . .

Waverly Windswept’s sister, Kai, put a magic ring under a grow lamp then forgot about it. Not only did the ring wake up, but it flew after them like a crazed fly, knocking things over and breaking them. It shattered a glass display case. Kai grabbed a baseball bat from behind the counter and prepared to strike the ring. Waverly stopped a customer from coming in while Kai batted uselessly at the ring. She tried a spell but the island was warded and stopped it. Isles of Mer were strict about what witches could do. They finally got the ring to run out of power and drop into a can – just as the store manager walked through the door into the wreckage with the snobby Akaido Beauty Company representatives! The customer Waverly had stopped earlier was their leader, the rude and indignant Tanya, who was still furious that Waverly slammed the door in her face to keep her from being harmed by the flying ring.

After cleanup, they prepared for a party out on the water. At the start of each season, the witches spelled 6 buoys which would allow them to create awesome waves for surfing for the tourists. Then the witches would party out on the boat they arrived in. Waverly had brought the troublesome ring along with her so it didn’t get stolen. It started to vibrate, made a sound like humming, and expanded in her palm. When she put it away, it went back to normal, apparently reacting to the moonlight. Suddenly on the horizon, the night sky went bright with an explosion and loud bang. Delphine reported it to the authorities on Big Mer. When Waverly got back to Cara Blue’s lobby, she couldn’t make it to her room so sat in a chair and fell asleep.

But during the blessing ceremony of the waves held on the beach the next day, a corpse washes up on the Isle of Mer, the body of a VIP vital to the island’s income – the vile Tanya! Something big is going on. Can Waverly figure it all out in time? Do the Water Lord cult members have something to do with the explosion and the death?

Waverly is still on Mer Island with her sister, she is working on the Bride's Dowry the legend that brought her to the islands in the first place. As ever things on Mer Island are not quiet, there is so much going on. Who to trust, even her sister keeps disappearing with flimsy excuses. When a corporate delegate Tanya Youngman a member of a Akaido Beauty , a company who are looking to build on the island, is found dead in the water Waverly finds herself drawn back into investigating despite her falling out with Griffin she decides she can investigate without him. Though circumstances will pull them together, can Wave forgive him his omission, and can she figure out who killed Tanya and why it seems she has ties to the island despite supposedly never having been here before?

This really speeds up, the Brides Dowry is coming to a head as is the new religion on the Island, it's making waves splitting families apart.
A great read, I enjoyed reading this book, and this series. a fun fast read, with lot's of mystery and intrigue, who do you trust? What is really happening on the Island of Mer, and most importantly will Waverly stay despite her magic and wardrobe being restricted, or will she return to Crystal Springs and her job and couture wardrobe.

As ever the book is well written with plenty to keep your brain busy. There are so many twists! The end came a bit quickly, and though things were tied up it felt a bit hurried at the end.so I had to drop a star otherwise it would have been a 5 star read.

I hope we heat more from Waverly and Griffin, I think there is more on the Island of Mer for us to know.,

Our heroine just wants to get her life under control (and perhaps find love, a treasure and other trivial things) but things (like dead bodies) keep getting in the way. How frustrating!

This is book three of the series, but it is written as a standalone. Feel free to start at any time.

This is a cozy witch mystery so all good there. But we also throw in mermaids and other exceptional beings and things get really interesting. The story is well written and easy to read with a diverse cast (see above) that provides plenty of friends and foes for our heroine to deal with. The setting is a nice tropical paradise, or it would be if it wasn't for all the trouble. I love our heroine and enjoyed her snark, although she can be a bit of a handful. The mystery was also a good one with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Overall, it was a fun story and I look forward to seeing more in the future.

Highly recommended

Magical ring, spelled buoys, dead VIP that everyone hated, clues that do not add up, and so much more. Waverly and her sister Kai, are planning on figuring this all out, but the twists and turns stop them cold. Secrets and betrayal come to light with even more people on the suspect list. The characters are terrific, with great backstories and skills that shine. The storyline had me entertained and hooked from the beginning. Can not wai to read more of this mystery series.

Wow!!!

Wow, this book is good. The twist are completely unexpected. This series has a nice balance between cozy yet not overly sweet. There are no coffee shops or bakeries, thankfully. That theme is completely overdone in the cozy genre to the point that I avoid series with culinary themes. I hope the authors continue the series because I've grown invested in Waverley and the islands.

Waverley and Kai are still looking for the Dowry treasure on Big Mer - but is Kai being honest with her sister? Is Rei guilty of Tanya's murder - and more? Will Waverley and Griffin be able to regain the broken trust that has damaged their budding relationship? Loving these stories!
