Henry Coray heeft met zijn boek 'Zoon van tranen' een toegankelijk boek geschreven over Aurelius Augustinus. Het lijkt mij een hele uitdaging om zo'n veelbewogen leven als dat van Augustinus om te vormen tot een goed lopend verhaal dat de lezer weet te pakken en ook nog eens overeenkomt met alle details van Augustinus' leven en werk.

Henry Coray is erin geslaagd een mooi boek over Augustinus te schrijven. Hoewel ik eerst moest wennen aan de schrijfstijl, wist het boek me in de loop van het lezen wel degelijk te pakken. Af en toe kwam in het boek de auctoriale verteller duidelijk naar voren met zinnen als 'Later zou Augustinus dit opschrijven in zijn Belijdenissen...'.

Wat ik erg waardeerde aan het boek waren de citaten uit Augustinus' oorspronkelijke werken (onder andere zijn 'Belijdenissen' en zijn 'De Stad Gods') die boven elk nieuw hoofdstuk geplaatst waren. Af en toe gebruikte Henry Coray in zijn verhaal ook fragmenten uit Augustinus' boeken of brieven. Ik miste wel een nawoord van de auteur, waardoor ik iets meer duidelijkheid zou kunnen krijgen over wat in het boek feit en wat fictie is; dat is echter slechts een persoonlijke voorkeur.

Al met al heb ik genoten van het boek: het sprak mij erg aan. Ook heb ik veel geleerd over Augustinus. Het boek heeft mij gemotiveerd om binnenkort ook Augustinus' 'Belijdenissen' (die ik al wat langer op mijn wishlist heb staan) te lezen!

After I finsiehd the Confessions of St. Augustine, the chaplain at St. Augustine High School gave me his own copy of this book to read. It was a good, easy, read. And it made the MUCH heavier Confessions a bit easier to chew. This book is mostly a historical fiction. It doesn't go into the much weightier material of the confessions. It's written in a late 50's Charlton Heston Hollywood movie style. You can almost hearing the sweeping orchestration building in the background when he leaves his mother. A bit on the cheesy side, but sometimes cheese is ok.
