EN I'm completely obsessed with this series, and I know I’ll devour every volume as soon as I get my hands on them.

So far, the story has been very focused on Reiji, but in this volume, his friend Chako takes on a more prominent role, adding depth and complexity to the power dynamics between the characters.

It’s been fascinating to watch the events unfold and see how each character is affected — exposing their vulnerabilities, desires, and contradictions.

This series is quickly earning a place among my all-time favourites.

--

Boy’s Abyss Vol. 3 is centered around Chako— diving deeper into the predatory situation regarding her favorite author, Kosaku Esemori.

Luckily, Chako is an intelligent girl with some self-dignity and a good head on her shoulders.

Chako and Reiji— WHAT’S BLOSSOMING HERE, HMM? A little romance? Trauma bond? Besties to lovers? We shall see.

Chako receives some upsetting news surrounding her dream of attending college in Tokyo. I’m not yet sure about how this is going to affect her, and I’m hoping she doesn’t start spiraling, too.

I’d be siiiiiiick, I love her character. She’s the one sliver of light and life in this manga.

There’s an odd relationship between Kosaku and Nagi, too.

Oh, and Reiji’s mother grew up with Kosaku, mentioning to her son that ”he’s a bad man” and to stay away from him.

So this highly successful author is also from the same sick town, no wonder.

And there’s some dark, twisted generational shit going on with this town’s Lover’s Abyss— the suicide pact place upriver, that he seems to have had some fatal involvement in back when he was seventeen. There’s some unexpected turn of events regarding this, unsurprisingly.

THIS IS SO MELODRAMATIC.

AND WHY IS EVERYBODY KISSING AND TOUCHING EACH OTHER?

Everyone’s definitely interconnected, alright.

I felt like this volume was more of a filler episode, giving some insight and setting up the resolve for the next few books.

I’ll keep reading though, I’m hooked.

I get why that one twitter comment said with the amount of "I'm gonna leave this town", it could be an emo song

But seriously, I even suspect the childhood bestie is gay now. The bullying is just his way of pulling pigtails.

Also, why are the girls in here so horny? Whyyyyyy.

Keeps being extremely bizzare, but intriguing nonetheless. The story keeps adding new elements and intertwining them very well.

Art is still beautiful.

Can't wait to read more of it this.

One of my favourite manga. I really like the story. However, it has become a bit boring. The story was better in the first two volumes but I still like it

Boy’s Abyss has been my manga north star of 2023 - not that it’s been the most amazing series, but it has been consistently decent, and that’s very rare in ongoing titles. Especially manga, where subsequent books to a strong/solid first volume usually sees a marked drop in quality.

Both Rei and Chako receive dramatic news about their futures and the various characters’ relationships become more complicated as a result. Rei and Nagi resume their doomtastic plan from the first volume and the mysterious author reveals his true colours.

Though the third volume sees the story becoming a bit soap opera-ish with its focus on this character’s feelings for that character, and this romantic entanglement leading to misunderstandings, etc. Ryo Minenami presents it with more substance than this kind of material usually is, which helps lend it more weight dramatically and feeds into the morbid themes of suicide and thwarted dreams at a young age.

While I keep waiting for something really crazy to make a particular volume stand out, I’m happy for it to remain at this consistent slow burn if the books continue to be as dependable as they’ve been up to now. And the conflict does seem to be ramping up so things are getting more interesting by the book, so who knows - maybe the next one is the great one? As it is, Boy’s Abyss is a fine adult manga series, perfect for readers looking for more mature subject matter in their manga.

Good for Chako standing up for herself despite conflicted feelings. I can’t believe how absent from the story the pop singer has become. Did she wanna hook up w/ the MC and off herself as mirrored revenge over her husband’s decades of hang-ups? Glad Chako and the boy can be kinda honest and in sync.

Just when I think the book isn’t that juvenile, the teacher says she accidentally has like $100,000 just lying around??? I know they mentioned she once did pro baseball, but her living space ain’t great and how much does a one-nation female team make?

Good foreshadowing them bringing up campus assault. Chako’s reaction and her parents are realistically melodramatic but teens get too attached to colleges they haven’t even been to. Especially in this age where it matters less and there are way more of them.

Ugh. I get the new relationship but, c’mon, not now. He’s gonna juggle three? Stupid and rushed… Interesting “camera” angles and those signature bright but sad expressions at least. It seems everyone’s proportions changed though. Rei’s back looks slouchy and weirdly bad in a suit, the singer suddenly has a huge chest, and the attention to Chako’s legs is glaringly voyeuristic. Ends on a weird, half-baked note.

Hmmmm… depression time?
This book is the very definition of depression, sadness, and hopelessness.
It gives you a glimpse into the darkness lurking within people's souls.
I can't fully judge this series without finishing it because I don’t know what conclusion it will reach. However, I have to warn you about the trigger warnings: suicide, sexual abuse, and mental abuse. But honestly—don’t read this if you’re already feeling down. You might sink even deeper into the abyss, just as the title suggests.
The story follows a boy trapped in his poisonous present, caged by his circumstances, mistreated by the world, and convinced that the only way to escape his pain is to die. We also get a deeper look into the hearts of those around him, uncovering the darkest secrets of human nature.
But honestly, it’s just so desperate.
I’ll share more thoughts if—and when—I continue the series (I just found out it hasn’t been fully translated into a language I can actually understand yet).

All of this is a train wreck of a story. No one here is redeemable. Wow.

After reading an interview with the author, it is at least clear to me with this series that no one is supposed to be redeemable. The author addresses the darkness of human emotions and humans themselves.

That said, if you read this story just absolutely understand that it is a mess and trigger heavy. Practice self care after reading this one if you're looking to read dark manga.

While I enjoy this book, I find a lot of negative reviews about the whole series online. I personally think this is due to individuals believing that the main character will eventually find some sort of reprieve from misery, but it just isn't what this book is going to bring to the table. If you are looking for a feel-good romance manga, this is not it. This is strictly just misery porn, flows nicely with an engaging story imo, but very much diverting from traditional romance manga.

Probably the least fucked up volume so far in this series but still screwed up.

Basically our two main characters make a pact to get the fuck out of this little town. But as always, things get messy, and harder to just "leave". On top of that secrets are exposed, including who's sleeping with who, and by the end you can tell this is ALL going to go to shit before any of these characters become happy...if ever. A 4 out of 5.
