Biding Time

Rate this book
Time is relative. You’re born. You live, and you die, your lifespan predisposed by your species, your health, and your luck. But what if there were a species who colored outside the lines?

In Back Bay, Massachusetts, dwells such a person. She goes about her life wanting nothing more than to run her business, right some wrongs, and never love again. She keeps her footprint small and her circle of acquaintances even smaller, and she’s an expert at it. So, when her neighbor, Ruby Miller, makes her interest known, it falls on ears deafened by centuries of life.

Betrayal leaves scars. Imprinted on your heart and in your mind, they simmer under the surface of every hour of every day of every year, constant reminders of pain, sadness, and loss. Some handle those wounds with retaliation, paying back the hurt with hurt of their own, while others use the ache of a fractured heart like a talisman. Forever holding onto a keepsake filled with the ruins of love gone wrong, they erect walls and promise themselves they’ll never love again.

Just because you deny it, doesn’t make it go away. Just because you put others in its path, doesn’t weaken its hold. And just because you’ve loved and lost countless times, doesn’t mean the right love won’t come along. Love is not ruled by the brain, but rather the heart…and even the most damaged is not immune to its sway.

I have been a writer of fan fiction for several years, and the numerous responses that I received during that time from my readers, convinced me to try my hand at self-publishing. Originally from Delaware, I now call Florida my home, and when I'm not writing or working... I'm playing golf.

My genre is lesbian fiction. Although my books are adult-rated for the love scenes they contain, they are not merely erotica. They are romance based, and inside you will find all the things that make a love story a love story. Attraction, distraction, lust, angst, comedy, and of course, sex. :)

Whoooooo Eeeeeee! This was a long one, and happily ate up the rest of my vacation due to it's length. I actually did not realize it was vampire-themed, which I am not that interested in. I thought it was about a time traveler, which is more my jam. But the history lover in me, the art lover in me, as well as lover of strong female main characters (being gay a HUGE bonus) convinced me to keep going. And yep, I did enjoy it.

I will try to keep this short, as I don't want to give any spoilers away. MC Bennett had been around awhile. Her being a vampire might give you some idea how old. She currently lives outside of Boston and owns a fine art gallery, and her neighbour, MC Ruby, is verrrry curious about the tall black haired beauty that only seems to go out at night. There are some HUGE surprises and turns I did not see coming, so bravo for that.

The story isn't without flaws. A large amount of editing was needed for redundant details (how many times do we have to hear about the stinky cat litter being changed and endless cups of wine/coffee/tea being poured?), and the stories Bennett weaves did get really long at times. There was a chunk in the middle where the book kind of stagnates due to Bennett telling a story, flashbacks to the time period, back to present day, some Harlequin sex happens, some hydration, then back to story, repeat. Even though I thought this could have been handled differently, I did like the flashbacks and getting to know Bennett's past. Much is linked to real historic times too, which I love.

A few characters are included that I didn't connect with, one being Lisa, whom I found annoying and sorority girl-ish. Ruby was hit/miss for awhile. Considering how long the book is, they get a lot of pages. The sex, while pretty plentiful, was more "romantic sex," so over the top language, skimmable, and not super sexy for me personally. Also be aware there is a lot of graphic blood and gore and death.

But I would really recommend this book, this author put a tremendous amount of work into it and it shows. And if I'm on a 4 hour flight and not even turning on my seat TV in order to read the entire time, acquiring a major glute cramp, it's gotta be for a reason.

Frankly Bennet's occasional grumpiness amused me even though I don't like people being intentionally rude. That being said, I'd be also really rude if my neighbour didn't leave me alone. Maybe even more rude than she was. And for less selfless reasons.
Other than that I have mixed emotions about this book. I like the writing style, as usual, but I wasn't that into some parts of the story. I strongly dislike flashbacks or whatever the trips down the memory lane were, so as far as I'm concerned they didn't need to be there.
But the part with Flanna was... Unexpectedly twisted but in an interesting way that I definitely didn't anticipate.

All in all I really liked the final romances.
Way better than the previous ones that I couldn't really connect with.

So I had fun

Bloody AMAZING!

For some reason I thought it was a time travel book, and in some way it is... but the more I read the better it got 'cause Vampires. The main characters in this are so damn likable that a huge part of me... okay, ALL of me, wishes that Gardner writes a sequel 'cause I didn't want them to leave me.

From start to finish, I honestly didn't want to put the book down but I wasted a few hours of reading when I conked out and fell asleep. There were a couple of twists that put a smile on my face when it happened because, fuck yeah... it made the story even more kick ass. There are brutal/gory scenes to get through but it's to be expected when Vampires are involved but it just made me more invested in the characters I found myself drawn to.

I honestly wish I could compell myself to forget the book just so I could read it again as new.

Anyway... I pray Ms. Gardner feels a sequel is screaming to be written!

Really liked this. You can tell there's more to tell about this universe, and I'm betting we'll see more follow up books. A bit twisty :) but in the best way. I caught myself several times saying, "No friggin way..." which, impressed me. Not a huge fan of long drawn out flashbacks so if there's a minor negative it would be that. But overall this was extremely solid, well written, and immersive.

Yuk… just yuk. (DNF)

Mostly I really love Lyn Gardner’s work. This one barely rates one star in my estimation. First, lots of blood and gore; weapons and battles. In other words, NC17 violence and overall very dark. One of the MCs, I just couldn’t like; kind of creepy actually. There are plot twists and I’m not going to do any spoilers. Not much real romance to speak of, so beware. I am just really disappointed. I was so looking forward to a new Lyn Gardner book. Bummer.

Wow! Just fricking wow!

Lyn Gardner has always been a favorite if mine, but I've only read her books in the romance genre. Ive never read her fantasy books. This was an absolute treat. Love her characters, her descriptions, and the dialogue. Buy this book! Read this book! Love this book!

Based on the cover I thought this would be more sci-fi, it wasn’t. It ended up being a really amazing vampire story! All the characters were amazing and fun to read, and the end 150 pages were such a wild ride!

Another Surprise

Since Lyn Gardner’s books have been hitting the selves I have been reading them. Not once as she disappointed me with a lack lustre story and this one is another that will meet the eyeballs and brain more than once.
A fast moving tale of vampires and mortals living in modern day Boston. The main character is hard on the outside and super soft on the inside, eventually. You will learn about the Firsts and Lyn’s version of their story. Plenty of fights to keep every vampire hunter happy with enough down time for the vampires to enjoy a love life.
This is another of Lyn’s books that I highly recommend if you want a book to keep you occupied. Personally I would like to thank the author for several sleepless nights wanting to find out how things were going to end.

**SPOILERS** *Spoilers ahead* 5 for the story but 2 for characters but can't give it a 3 so it's a 4

I loved the women in the story except I never liked our main MC. The MC was very annoying to me... the only redeeming thing about the MC is their back story and how they came to be. But Ruby, I really liked her and I still very mad she does not get the ending she truly deserves, and if there is another book I'm happy for it because in 25 years or less we still have a villain... and Lisa, oh god I couldn't stand her and her arc really irritated me I'm surprised I didn't throw this out, but I was invested in the story hence why this got a 4 star from me. It's a fun queer vampire book! Curious about your feedback... let me know #teamRuby

Wow

This was amazing read. Lyn has another hit on her hands. From the beginning i was hooked. Bennett and Council was a great story in a story but Ruby stole the show. I'm glad Gus and his family could become Guardians.

A Must Read

I have waited an entire week before posting my review. I did not want to spoil anything and I was on such a high, after reading Biding Time, that I knew I could not be trusted to write a review until I calmed down.
Once you pick this book up, you will not want to put it down. As much as I wanted this book to last longer, I knew I would be enthralled until the last page.
I'm really hoping this book will be on Audible so that I can listen to it, as well.
Lesbian Fantasy Fiction is Lyn Gardner's genre. I hope she continues to write fantasy.
I haven't started a new book yet. There have only been a few books that have made such an impact that I have needed a break after it is finished. This is one of those books.
Thank you so very much Lyn Gardner for giving me something I didn't even know I needed.

The book is already an award winner, and rightfully so

SAPPHIC BOOK BINGO: non-human character, butch character, award-winning book, unusual job, out of your comfort zone; UNICORN: 400+ pages, more than two POVs, period (possibly other categories)

Phenomenal read! Don't let the length intimidate you - there are so many elements involved that there's no way that it gets boring. It's far from a typical f/f vampire novel, having a lesser used origin story, and there are even times when it pokes fun at the myths. It is very well written and there are some jaw-dropping surprises/twists throughout its length. Don't miss it!!

Ok so if you are thinking about reading this book and you don’t like when the MC starts with one love interest and ends up with another (especially if this another is annoying but have a redemption story that you cannot really forgive) this isn’t the book for you
But if you are ok with that, go for it, it’s a very well written book but the problem that I talked about it’s really a deal breaker for me so it only make me angry and disappoint while I was reading.
I gave it 3 stars in respect for the quality of the book in general that it’s excellent and for the author whom I really like

This part of the review it’s especially for those who already started reading and came here for whatever reason, beware this contain major spoilers so don’t be mad at me:
If you like Bennett and Ruby and expects something to happen with them, I am very sorry
I hope that with this review some people that have the same problem than me don’t feel the same I as did, and lastly, let me remind you that this is not a critic for the author or the quality of the book, it’s really a me problem that I decided to talk about in case some people feel the same way

Begging For A Sequel

First, I love good vampire stories. Second, I love good Lesfic. Imagine my delight at having both in one novel! Then imagine how thrilled I was to begin reading and realize that not only were two of my favorites combined but done so very well. I've read two of Ms. Gardner's novels to date , Ice and Going On Red and Going On Red is one of my favs and now Biding Time joins that list.
The world she's created is so detailed and vivid, it was like watching a movie (not a bad idea!) not reading a book which is what good writers do imho, they draw you into their world and engage your senses. Consider me so engaged I want more. Please tell me we'll get to read more from this world.

This is my first read of a book in this genre and I picked it up because I really like the authors work.

I like the fact that her stories are always not straight forward with twists and turns that you can't predict. I like the fact that she takes the time needed to tell the whole story and builds layer upon layer into her plots. Adding people, places and complexities as she goes.

Having read the book I am not a convert to the genre but still a fan of the author. If you want to read a novel that delivers value for money, a complex tale told well and a story that will stay with you and not leave the moment you pick up your next book. This one is worth being added to your TBR pile.

What a ride! I decided to read Biding Time because I love Lyn Gardner’ stories. I was never inclined to read about vampires, about anything supernatural or even remotely horror. But, I started reading. I was instantly hooked into this story. I knew nothing about vampires except seeing Twilight a long time ago. This book is amazing. It has love, sadness, loss, very hot scenes and by the time you’re a quarter into the book, you forget you’re reading about beasts that may or may not exist. The book is long, but I never wanted it to end. It has twists and surprises and it will keep you turning the pages.
I couldn’t put it down.

Really a great perspective on a familiar genre

Since this is my third time reading this book, I thought it time to give a review!
I love the story, the characters and the many twists and surprises. For those who like a lot of sex... You will be very satisfied. Personally I don't need to read so much...however it IS well written. I love the different factions of vampires and that MS Gardner provides a wonderful history that is very exciting and fulfilling.

Very entertaining. A must read.

Too much going on

The concept is an interesting one and Bennett is a great main character but there are too many characters and the pov will randomly switch to minor characters. There is a lot of exposition and information dumping with things that aren't necessarily related to the plot. It needed a really good content editor to help tighten the book.

I normally don't write reviews but I felt I had to because of how mixed I felt on this book. Generic points first spoilers after. tldr: Book is well written and world building is good but the ending is so unsatisfying that I recommend skipping it.

First the good:
1. The world building is excellent and thoroughly engrossing. In fact I'd honestly say this was a main reason I finished the book.
2. Characters are interesting and well written*
3. Overall authorship was excellent and the story was enjoyable.

The Bad:
1. Lack of emotional payoff for any romance left a bitter after taste
2. The twist made no sense
3. Long stretches of flashback sequences that didn't always flow well with the story as a whole

**SPOILERS AHEAD**

Emotional payoff was horrible especially in the romance department. I'm sorry but you can't have us getting to know 2 main characters, get emotionally invested in them and sort of have them together and then trash the whole thing in favor of a side character that we barely know or care about. No matter what happened I still kept hoping for Ruby and Bennett regardless of being frequently reminded that they are just sex buddies. Bennett with Lisa just didn't do a thing for me, we don't know Lisa, don't care about Lisa and even though they were hints of two's feelings for each other it felt forced anyways.

The twist was not handled well and left me more confused and disoriented than anything. Honestly if it weren't for the world building I would closed the book then and there. Twists are great especially when the foreshadowing is done well. Even unsubtle foreshadowing can leave you anticipating the reveal. Instead we get a sudden twist that completely changes the Ruby we have gotten to know for most of the book.

The author tries to hang in there with her and that really just left me both hating and liking Ruby. She is kinda of the same character we got to know through 2/3rds of the book but she also screwed over the only other emotionally invested character we have so we kind of hate her too. In the end she gets shafted out of her happy ending and I think I would have been happier if she had died in the final assault against her brother doing something redeeming. *This is where the character writing broke down for me.

This is one of the few books that I nearly regret buying. Up until the twist I loved it but post twist I hated it.

I honestly do not know what to make of this book. Is it bad? No. Is it good? No.

There is a decent story in there, but it gets bogged down with all kinds of nonsense just after the seed of conflict is planted. We get to see the villain (who, by the way, is dumb and stupid as fuck) in the story gearing up to set his plans in motion, and then we're treated with chapter after chapter of the MC's history, all the while having sex with another main character. And if you know the age of the MC, there is a lot to tell. To be fair, I even learned a few new things, but it goes on and on, before the author remembers there's a story to be told. And the MC isn't the only one with a life story to tell.

Anyway, when the story resumes, we finally get to the climax (pardon the pun) and it was... lackluster. As I said, the villain is an extremely dumb figure, only capable of uttering vulgarities and slurs directed at women, so it's a mystery how he even could come up with his plan for world domination. I sometimes wondered how he managed to not die while, I don't know, tying his shoelaces. And the MC has plans for him after his defeat, and we get a page of her doing something with him, but exactly what that is, and to what end is never explained.

Points, though, for that plot twist, although I would have preferred at least a vague hint or two somewhere. It just drops into the story completely out of the blue.

And then there's that damn cat with its litter-box shenanigans. Why am I reminded of that five times throughout the book?

My feeling is if that the history part of the MC would have been told more gradually, instead of in 20 chapters in a row, it would have improved the pacing of the book. A slightly more intelligent villain (and a little less than perfect MC) would also have been an improvement. Because there is a decent story in there, with an interesting take on certain creatures of the (not)night, but it was hard to filter it out.

DNF.

With some difficulty I managed to read, I don't know, 20% of this? DNF.

This story was very frustrating to even try to read. From the first page, the prose was extremely stodgy and off-putting, and the plotting was just bad.

And OK look, writers, I know you really want to tell me what the random mook is thinking, but don't just hop into their head with no notice in the middle of a scene. It's lazy. It's not impossible to do it right, but when I'm reading the scene and it looks like you did it because you forgot whose story you're telling, that's not it.

All right, all right. This isn't the first book I've read, I can look past a lot. But still, this book.

The main character, Bennett, is a vampire who walks around casually beating up drug dealers straight from 1980's central casting. I was at least hoping it was tongue-in-cheek and I'd get to hear her drop some lines like "Do you feel lucky, punk?" but it absolutely wasn't. Cut a few scenes later and she's internally raging about... *dramatic horror movie music* TWEAKERS!

When the book isn't following Bennett, it follows some other characters I also didn't care about. One of them, the obvious antagonist, is a completely ridiculous idiot who chews the scenery to the point I couldn't take a single line of his dialogue seriously. He's too ridiculous to even come from central casting. Well... maybe TV movie casting. Or... a cartoon.

There's also Ruby, who's a forgettable character I don't really know or care about. In this, I agree with Bennett: she doesn't care about Ruby either.

I recommend you don't read this book. 2 stars: I didn't like it, but I didn't find it appalling or anything.

Damn. Wasn't expecting the "day walker" theme.

So, wow. This was way better than I expected. I thought it was just going to be another lesfic, one I picked at random from Amazon's list of other people's matching interests, but this is an amazing story.

SPOILER ALERT - don't read the rest if you don't want to know the secret, just know this book is worth getting ten times over.

Okay, if you're here, I'm just going to tell you, it's about vampires. But not like you think or like most "average" vampire tales are about. Sure, you have your bad guys, and some are horrific, and some are more than horrific (think Dracula and Jack the Ripper and Stalin all in one person). But some turn out to be really great people. They tamed the beast, for the most part, and learned to be benevolent, kind, and caring. And you would think they were just like regular women falling in love, if not for all the vampire-ish stuff going on.

Also, this is really well written. The characters have depth and meaning, feelings and issues that make them feel real. I also have a pet peeve for messed up grammar that I feel should be easy to fix, and I was delighted to find none.

I will definitely be looking to see what else this author has available.

Fell in Love!

Absolutely brilliant book with twists and turns that will kept my eyes glye to the pages. The world building was incredible, it felt like a fresh take on vampires, but doesnt go completely off the rails. The characters were well fleshed out with their own personalities and feelings and identities and they really have the ability to pull you into their inner circle.

There was murder, mystery, romance and more! I highly recommend giving this book a read! I also really enjoyed the length of the book. There was no feeling of "rushing" the story, or the dreaded abrupt ending that really doesn't give the reader (or me at least) a resolution to the story.

10 put of 10, will absolutely read again, and will be reading everything this author has written very shortly!

This book has some really great twists. Half were actually really unexpected. As most novels I've read recently had enough foreshadowing to make you feel like a psychic as the plot unfolds, it was nice to have some real surprises thrown in.

That said the characters were not my favorite, but they did have interesting backstories. The plot was also entertaining. However, it does drag in a few places. Some scenes could have been taken out completely without detracting anything from the storyline. It also could have dropped around a hundred pages if it didn't keep incessantly talking their food, drinks, or changing cat litter. Still, it's worth the read, and I look forward to seeing what else is in store from this author.

It was great to read something that was a decent length, something to get my teeth into, so to speak and like others I wasnt expecting vampires.
.
There are a few unexpected twists and turns and unlike some other reviewers, I loved the back stories and the histories of the characters. The interplay between 3 different species was well written and fnally a writer that acknowledges that women have periods and need to pee!

It's a good read, I couldn't put it down and I'd happily follow the characters to a different point in their lives.

Wow, wow, WOW! What a book. I couldn’t put it down. I’m a big Lyn Gardner fan and this book did not disappoint. I love the way Gardner creates this universe and weaves so many interesting characters, so much detail, and so much rich history into it. No wonder it took her a year to write - a year very well spent, I say. I’d love to visit these characters in a few years, maybe find out the answers to some lingering questions. This book might not be perfect but it is freakin’ excellent. Don’t be afraid - open your mind, read it and enjoy.

I have read many of these vamp stories, this one stood out easily. Great character development and physical descriptions, I could picture the characters in my mind (I am missing this level of development in many of the other books I read). This is a different spin on this story, using normal vamps and day walkers. Some really nice backgrounds developed throughout the centuries. I would love to follow this clan/family as they set up a new home in Italy in future stories.

enthralling!!

Can I say first off that I pre ordered this book without reading a synopsis of it as I really like this author. SO I was very surprised and slightly disappointed to find out it was about vampires!! Vampires and supernatural tropes not being ‘my thing’!
However within the first two chapters it had me absolutely hooked. The interwoven stories, the characters and the twists all gripped me to the very end. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
