Rate this book
WELCOME TO FOO. In The Gateway to Foo, fourteen-year-old Leven Thumps learns about a secret gateway that bridges two worlds -- the real world and Foo, a place created at the beginning of time that makes it possible for humans to dream and hope, aspire and imagine. But Foo is in chaos, and three transplants from that dreamworld have been sent to retrieve Leven, who alone has the power to save Foo. The adventure continues in The Whispered Secret. Foo is in chaos, and Leven must overcome several adversaries and survive the Swollen Forest to save his friends and keep hope alive. As fate would have it, bad goes to worse when Leven digs up a buried secret -- one that stalks him, determined to whisper a truth that could be deadly in the wrong hands. Will Leven master control of his power, or will Foo crumble under a dark new enemy?

About the author

Obert Skye

47 books883 followers
Obert Skye read his first book at age two. He wrote his first story at age four. And he was nearly trampled by a herd of water buffalo at age six. For a short time, he lived on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, where he spent time as a candy-taster. Several years ago, Obert Skye says, he discovered the existence of Foo. Publishing his story as a fictional series was not Obert’s first choice. Nevertheless he is content that the “history” is being told.

Hobbies and other interests: Collecting old maps, water polo, roller coasters.

I read the second book of the Gateway by Obert Sky. My favorite character of the series so far is Leven's sycophant Clover. He is my favorite character because he is mysterious, and funny. But he still cares about Leven. I liked the book because Leven gained confidence and he became stronger. I also liked how descriptive it was it didn't leave any detail out.

Wanted to read these with the boy, to make sure they were okay. Book one was okay, besides the fact that here we are with yet another "orphan" being subjected to the abuses of the idiotic and inept adults in his life. Same with Leven's co-hero, Winter. I guess there has to be good reason for two kids to want to leave their lives behind, but it's a little done.

Anyway, despite that, like I said, the first book was a decently fun read. Interesting characters and idea. If you can get over all the adolescent humor and silly puns ;)

Number two, not so much so. Way too far-fetched and my interest was just lost (especially when a character goes to visit the wacky ((not in a good way)) homeschool family). It just doesn't work for me when an author makes up a world and doesn't describe it's parts well enough for one to imagine it. All I could think of in some parts was, "Wow. Was this guy on something when he wrote this?"

Too bad, Leven. Boy and I couldn't even make it through the first couple of chapters in the 3rd book. Sigh.

For weeks my friend has been begging me to read this series and i finally read the first book and it was kinda a let down after wat she said. I found it very hard to follow because the author put in so many characters without explaining half of them and it made it hard to keep track of them all. If you ask me, it wasnt until i got to the end did the book get a bit more interesting (im hoping the next book will be better).

I liked this book because they were hard presses to reach their goal. And they didn't cuss. I do think that it was childish in some parts. And it was the classic kid who thaught he was worthless and then something magical happens. Then a freind comes and they go on an adventure to save the world.

Because the book was just a variation of "harry potter" or "the lighting thief". But it was not bad and I did like it.
I would recamend this book to kids 9-12.

In book one leven thumps is born and his mother dies as he is forced to have an awful mother and father. Soon he finds out about a gateway to magical world called foo where there is chaos and he is the only one that can save foo. In book two leven lets a secret go and he must stop before everyone finds out.

We read this as a family. I really enjoy listening on CD on trips. I also enjoy the various voices used here like in Harry Potter.

Obert Skye has got to be the most zany, wildly creative author I have ever read.

Leven Thumps is interesting. It's actiony which I love, but sometimes it can be slow and the oddity of Foo sometimes makes me cynical of the book.
