After stepping down as the commander of the Dragon Knights, Hubert asked Melissa to accompany him to his estate and pretend to be his lover. There they found a hostile greeting at the hands of Eleanor, a woman who was fiancée to Hubert’s late brother. Eleanor hoped to see that engagement transferred to Hubert, but he steadfastly refused, declaring that he would only marry Melissa, a woman who has the approval of his dragon. Seeing no way to immediately change Hubert’s mind, Eleanor decided to leave the estate. But chances are good that she hasn’t surrendered, and is preparing the first moves in a sinister plot to obtain what she desires!
I will admit that I DID enjoy reading this, but I did feel things were sometimes rushed and pulled me out of the story in certain places. The most surprising thing though, is that despite the more rushed pacing, that was also my favorite because there is a HUGE shift in Melissa and Hubert's relationship.
At the end of volume one, I thought this series was going to be pretty slowburn because Melissa didn't really give any signs that she had romantic feelings for Hubert. I definitely felt there were at least HINTS that led me to believe there would be a romance, but I didn't expect how her feelings bloomed super quickly in this volume. Not only that, but Hubert had almost like a 360 in his actions because he was much more vocal in them holding hands and acting like a couple. He's certainly made his intentions obvious to other people NOT Melissa, but there was no denying it even to Melissa where she started to seriously question/ponder if he loved her.
Now all that might sound like a bad thing, but it's not overall. I really enjoyed seeing their romance bloom much quicker then what I first thought, but I did feel some whiplash in how fast things were going romantic wise AND plot wise. That would be my only complaint of this volume because I felt the last quarter was extremely engaging and LOVEDDDDD seeing the dragons. Honestly, for a brief moment I was on the fence if I would still love this series, but the dragons and how critical they are to the romance really outweigh everything else. Plus, the artttt! SO gorgeous!
Overall, this was a good volume even if I did feel a little bummed that I didn't enjoy it as much as volume one. I have volume three on hand so I'm diving into that volume next!
There’s a baby dragon and he’s sooooo cute!!!! Ahem, what, I think baby dragons are cute, okay? And this one’s blue too! Which has nothing to do with his cuteness but…never mind.
A wonderful continuation from Volume One and now I really want Melissa and Hubert to be a couple, lol! They’re just so cute and perfect together, and I love how respectful they are to and of each other not to mention each clearly admires and cares for the other more than they’re letting on.
The plot thickens and though a few times I was confused as to what was going on just a little—an odd phrase here and there that didn’t seem to fit which is probably just a bad translation from the original light novel into the manga as The Earl and the Fairy suffered from the same problem—I was very invested and nervous for both Melissa and Hubert by the end. Not entirely sure where the bad guys are going with their plot yet, but it does NOT sound good!
I can’t wait to read the next volume as soon as I can get it from the library! So nervous for everyone! 😬
‼️Content‼️
Violence: a dragon’s dead body with blood underneath it (nothing over PG-13); a baby dragon is flung; a human body with blood underneath it (nothing over PG-13); a girl is slapped
Drug/Alcohol: a man was poisoned so he died (not shown, only talked about)
Other: a girl is kidnapped and tied up; a wrecked carriage; a woman is cursed by the dragons; dragon poachers; magical bonds between a dragon and its knight; a character’s brother was ill and died (not shown, only talked about)
3.5⭐️ I was expecting a bit more from this but it seems it's just another cute romance, it's not bad tho, it's just, idk, more of the same (?) I would liked to be a bit more focused on the fantasy, the dragons, but the main focus is the romance... It's not bad, I just thought I would like it more :))
Kinda stagnant and bland. Just don’t feel like it’s worth the time tbh. Overused tropes done poorly (I enjoy kidnapping plots sometimes, but this one felt cheesy idk).
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite manga. It's wholesome and swoony. Melissa is a little naive in this one. i love the fact that we get some much dialogue in this story.
The art is beautiful, but the story... it's soulless. It's like a case of saying what I should feel and not actually making me feel it. The characters are like knitted from all the clichés but not in a good or interesting way. It's the second volume and I have yet to care for the protagonists or to feel this deep connection between Melissa (or Hubert for that matter) and the white dragon. And between them. Maybe with a little more development and backstory it will become better, I don't know. Still, I bought the third volume, so I will read that as well, mainly for the graphics, but then that's it with this series for me.
Content Warnings: Mention of murder [via poison] and kidnapping
I adore Melissa and her interaction with the dragons, I also love learning all the dragon/dragon knight lore, but I’m feeling somewhat squeamish about the age gap between Melissa and Hubert. As I’ve been out of the manga game a while I forgot how prevalent age gaps can be within the genre.
It would also probably be relatively easy to forget about except when, in this volume, Melissa says something along the lines of growing up she considered Hubert like a father and brother and now she’s developing feelings for him. First, this statement confused me because she did grow up with both her parents, granted they were busy working in the castle but they were still there. It would have made more sense to me if she would have said growing up she considered Hubert a mentor since he did teach her everything she knows about dragons but comparing him to a father figure or brother? Sit’s weird with me.
Other than that awkward statement I did enjoy this volume. I’m not sure if I’ll continue with this series, perhaps it’s just not a fit for me, but I’m going to give it one more volume to wow me. I really do love the history and lore set in this book I just wish there wasn’t a big age gap, on top of the power imbalance, between the two characters.
I found this one boring. A whole lot of dragon talk and not enough interpersonal human relationship development. I’m hoping it’s just because the author wants us to understand more about dragons before they can really start telling the story about the people in this series. If the next couple of books become mostly dragon talk again, I’ll have to abandon this series because I just can’t get into it. I read for the human characters, not a complex breakdown of dragons and how they relate to people, their rules and their thoughts. Enough already with the dragon stuff, I get it! Now move on with the story please. I also have an issue with Melissa and Hubert. Their personalities so far are severely lacking. It’s just been two books of dragon talk and not a lot about them. Hubert was a dragon knight and Melissa feeds dragons snacks. There isn’t a whole lot of development other than that. I want more from these characters. I want to see developments and more sides to their personalities. Right now it just is so flat. I also want to see more written about them and not short clips about them to only immediately be followed by many long pages of more dragon talk. Hoping and expecting to see something more in the next volume as this has so much potential.
This is a great follow-up to the first volume, and it is because we come to know much more about Hubert.
I feared that he was going to be this stereotype: a gallant and handsome knight who loves the story’s heroine without any greater depth. There is far to him here.
First of all, we learn that he’s a dragon nerd. Most of his knowledge and interest is in dragons. Beyond riding them, he knows how to care for them, how they think, their social culture, their history as species and cooperation with humans, and the proper way for humans to relate to them. In contrast, he has no idea how to dance, despite being a nobleman, and admits that he has an easier telling individual dragons apart than human noblewomen, because the latter frequently change their appearance (due to changes in fashion) and they wear make-up in similar styles. He is also encouraged by his mother to be more honest to Melissa about his feelings, so that “pretend to be my lover” thing is likely to no longer be pretend soon.
We also learn more about the heroine herself. Melissa has a love realization that was only hinted at in the first volume, and this leads to interesting introspection. In fact, it is my personal interpretation that she really wants to formally meet Hubert’s mother so she can receive formal blessing to marry Hubert and also learn how to support Hubert as a lady because, yeah, a maid doesn’t know how to administer a manor in the lord’s absence.
The art continues to be beautiful. I like to linger on certain scenes, like of the nearby town, or the first shot of Blue, or some particularly poignant expression.
Trickster Eric Novels gives The Dragon Knight’s Beloved volume 2 an A+
It's getting better and better. The pace is picking up but the details are still everywhere. Melissa is kidnapped just as they learn Lord Hubert's brother was murdered and preparations are underway for a new contract with the dragons while the new king is growing and learning. Fortunately, the dragons all still seem very attached to Melissa, as is Lord Hubert, but that may be a double edged sword if they lose control and can't find her in time. Most likely the dragon knights will be eager to help with the search now that they've shown up given how fond they all were of Melissa back at the castle. These poachers and Lady Eleanor may have bitten off more than they can chew. Interesting as well to learn about the dragon curse, especially as it seemed there was no concrete evidence until recently. No wonder the dragons never warmed up to Eleanor.

The plot advances as swiftly as dragons hunting their prey. I love this series! Much as I'd love to see Lady Eleanor burned to a crisp by any of the dragons, I'm glad the romance aspects are being developed further. Lord Hubert loves Melissa, and I know she loves him even if she doesn't say it. I see it in her eyes and feel it in her words. The blue dragon is adorable, yes, but the white dragon is still my favorite. Oh, my gosh, the plot twist! The bond between dragon and dragon rider is so strong that they're so entwined, that if one dies, the other will, too. The lore of dragons and royal hierarchy in this manga saga are so interesting! My only regret about this series is that I bought only the first three books and not all in this series! Dragons rule!
I am really loving this series so far, though I am only on the 2nd volume. And if I may be so bold... Lord Hubert is super good looking! How can you hate on a story with a man as good looking as him in it?! lol But it's not just him, every character is drawn so incredibly detailed and the artwork is simply beautiful. I said it on my last review for vol 1 that the illustrations for this manga is top-tiered, and it makes it so much more enjoyable to read. We also get introduced to the Dragon King - Blue. The names for these dragons aren't very creative though. White Queen for the white dragon and Blue for the blue dragon... very original. lol. I'm enjoying my time reading this series and I'm glad I picked it up. I would highly recommend it!
It's a shame I don't like the romance here. I really like the dragons, and I think the world interesting and fairly well developed. But there's just zero chemistry between the main characters, partly because there's a big age and class gap between them. Melissa seems to mostly think of Hubert as a brother, and her very sudden blushing around him is less than convincing, and I just feel nothing at all from Hubert. I don't think I'll persist with the series past this point, because I bet there's going to be a lot more about this boring romance.
While the first volume was more of an introduction to the characters and world, here we have more lore and more of a story developing. As always, the art is absolutely gorgeous and the dragons themselves are shown to have a culture, hierarchy and relationships uniquely their own, which I appreciate in fantasy books as many of them dismiss them as being solitary animals instead of intelligent beings. Hopefully they expand upon this more and maybe get some more dragon history in the upcoming volumes!
I binge read these so no idea where one starts and the other finished. 1-8. All I know is I went another clicked clicked and clicked until there was no more. Damning thing is that this wasn't a completed series and the wait for the next one goes on. I liked it. Tons of dragons. Age gap romance and pretty much arranged marriage set by a dragon. I liked Blue, he grew up so quickly. The decorating bit was the sweetest. Loved how the knights follow suit. The prince was cool, he deserves his dragon. Liked how he gained a daughter too. Cute series with pain in the ass powers that be not taking a hint.

The baby dragon is too cute! And I love how Melissa just innocently bonds with all of them. I like that it also isn't like she's some special chosen one, she's just really good and kind to them and knows how to act so they naturally accept her. Of course Eleanor shows up and is ridiculously ignorant to what is required to bond with a dragon which makes her attempts at trying to take over the estate even more pathetic. Just can't wait to see what happens next.
OK this just gets cuter and cuter. I want to find the original story so I can read it all as a novel. But until then this is super cute. I love the characters even the dragons have personalities. It has romance and intrigue. All the things she look for in a light album good read.
I have always had a soft spot in my heart for books that have dragons that can communicate with humans (especially when it's a special-chosen one).
And then BABY DRAGON? Oh yes, very special place.
I must say that I'm grateful this volume makes some headway on the relationship between Melissa and Hubert. I'm hooked on this world and I need to consume it all!
It's still really cute, but there were parts where it was confusing what was going on exactly and it felt rushed. Also, I don't know how I feel about the fact that Melissa said Hubert was once like a father and a brother to her. Exactly what is their age difference? There are panels where Hubert looks like he's a teen and he's carrying her around.... feels.... odd.
The story really begins to pick up in this volume! The artwork continues to be gorgeous, and the new baby dragon is absolutely adorable. I cannot wait for the release of the next volume to find out what happens next.
Me gusto mucho. Me encanta la inocencia de Melissa, y el favor que tiene de la Reina Blanca. Después de leer estos dos tomos me dan muchas ganas de leer la novela original. Espero poder encontrarla.
Wow, this is so cute! I love the world-building and Melissa is so adorable with the dragons. I could just eat this series in one go. . . Volume 3 where are you?
