Newborn Pixie Cozy Mystery #1

Rate this book

Cute

The story was cute but there wasn't much to it. I'm left with a lot of unanswered questions about the divisions in Elisa's family, the purpose of a pixie and the nature of the town. I'm wondering why her parents kept secrets from her and why her mother seems resentful that she learned them. The mystery doesn't present enough characters for anyone to really wonder who done it on the small mystery included, as soon as the first suspect is eliminated there's really only one character left to choose from that isn't in on the investigation. And nobody really acts suspicious. There's no one who is mean or rude for more than a few seconds. They're some of the nicest criminals you'll ever read. Honestly as a mystery I wouldn't rank this very high. As an interesting setting with an intriguing set of characters though it does really well and I think this would have been a better book if the story had focused there.

Unless you find IDIOTS entertaining, PASS

The plot seems promising, but the actual story is just a mess. I liked the British Isles language the author writes in, but the characters act so ditzy, no, downright STUPID, that I gave up halfway through. Thus I don't think the following count as spoilers:
Needing to check things online, she buys a computer, hooks it into phone data, then gives it over for cat to play games on instead of doing the research??
She has a magically refilling money jar, yet focuses on needing to find a job or other way to make money?
Figures the best way to make money is to let out a room to the cousin who is the most likely suspect to murdering her aunt, leaving a threatening note, & perhaps having stolen part of her inheritance from the house?

Fun little paranormal cosy mystery

This was a fast paced and fun read with a couple of over the top characters. I found them to be adorable, especially Muffin, and although there was a bit of betrayal, for the most part it was just a quirky whodunnit.

Like other books of this nature you have a young woman (Elisa) who gets a letter from a lawyer informing her that she needs to come to a town to get her inheritance. You have cat familiar (Muffin), a ghost and someone and something bad that happens (theft, murder, etc.)

That's pretty standard but what stood out to me were a couple of things that were not like other books of this kind and that I rather disagreed with or thought unrealistic.

An example: There are two women lawyers. They don't explain her entire inheritance to her and they insist on doing some kind of ceremony around her. She doesn't immediately object, she doesn't step back and ask them to explain just what the heck they are doing, she just lets them go through with it.

Another example> Elisa's hair changes overnight to pink. She doesn't totally freak out, think about going to the store and getting hair die or anything else; she just pretty much placidly accepts what happened.

She just seems too placid to what is going on.

Then there's the other matter, the unethical thing. The two lawyers doing their ceremony is what gets me. They don't explain it to her, they don't point out the consequences and they don't basically give her a choice. No matter the nature of the town they live in they are lawyers and, as lawyers, are bound by certain codes of behavior and I feel they totally ignored these. They basically trapped Elisa into changing into a pixie without her permission.

The house and Muffin are interesting but the plot isn't that complex and the problems I pointed out above almost ruined the story for me. If it were for those problems I'd probably give the story a 3 or maybe a 4 but the problems cited cause me to reduce the rating to a 2.

Dass ich es in kürzester Zeit durchgelesen habe sagt schon einiges. Und das liegt nicht nur daran, dass es "nur" 162 Seiten hat.
Absolut amüsant, schräg und unterhaltsam! New Favorit!

Ich liebe Elisa's pinke, abstehende Haare und das rückwärts alternde Kätzchen, Muffin 💕

Ich will mehr! Aber wieso gibt es nur drei Teile davon? 🤷🏻‍♀️

DNF - audible version review.

It’s a very sad state when a 3hr and 57 minute book that’s supposed to be a cosy mystery, drags, gets boring and starts to annoy you almost immediately.

The FL is disturbingly annoying.

This author was a little bit too wordy for their own good. It’s a cosy mystery. I don’t know the page count for the written book, but it has to be small if the audio version is just short of four hours, and even with such a short book, at an hour and a 1/2 in ( two hours and 24 minutes left), we are now getting to the point where she comes into her pixie powers, and according to the cat, she’s not even fully there yet, now experiencing her first ghost, now thinking her aunt may have been killed and now finding out she’s a pixie, etc, etc.

Why waste all this time knowing that the book is short why couldn’t it be a case where she already knew she was a pixie, but couldn’t come into her powers until the powers were transferred from some other member in the family so we already have a headstart when the aunt dies? or at least she could have made that discovery within the first 20-30 minutes of the book. We could already have been into the story by now but instead, it’s now getting started? it leaves me with no desire to continue this book.

I’m sorry to say, maybe it was just the writing, but even the narrator couldn’t make this book better. I also think the narrator is part of the problem.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

Interesting ideas but some stuff just didn't make any sense. A couple being:

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Maybe.

Would you recommend?: No

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

I read the German translation so some of my criticism might be due to poor translation.

The story has a cute idea. Mystical creatures living amongst regular humans has potential for a few fun moments. And we get a glimpse of it when Elisa and her friends have to deal with the police. I hope for more of that in the next book.

Sadly there are some time inconsistencies which always throw me off.
The pacing at times feels rushed and therefore the characters don't get the time they need to grow, process what's happening and act accordingly.
Elisa, the main character, appears to stumble through the whole thing, only because other people make her do something. She is likeable enough, but I really hope there is going to be more to her in book 2.

The same is true for back story which we get a glimpse of every once in a while, but there seems to be way more potential which wasn't used.

A quick and easy read I don't regret picking up but wouldn't necessarily recommend to friends when asked for a good book.

Elisa's surprise inheritance of a house in a small New Zealand town comes at the perfect time, as she has just been fired yet again. It seems that she snores with her eyes open whenever she is bored!

As soon as she moves into her new home, her hair starts turning pink and her ears become longer. The explanation is revealed - she is a pixie! No one else is what they seem either. Her twin lawyers are fairies, the cute waiter at the diner is a male pixie, and the girl next door is a witch. But someone is not happy that Elisa has inherited from Aunt Esmerelda. She receives a note telling her to get out of the house and that night a ghost appears to tell her the same. Her twin lawyers discover that her magical inheritance of pixie dust has been stolen.

Even Elisa's new kitten is special. Not only can it talk (and use a computer) but it ages backwards. Muffin has been the familiar to 7 generations of pixies!

The cute cop who helps them solve the mystery of the theft asks Elisa out.

The first book in a cozy mystery Pixie series. I have never read a book centered on a pixie, they are usually jumbled in with fairies and other magical small creatures but in this series they are life size. It’s great to get to know the characters and how pixies are established. At least this time it’s not with a bed and breakfast. Unusual traits appear the longer Elisa stays in her late aunt Esmerelda’s house. Pixie traits the poor girl knew nothing about. Her inheritance also becomes interesting with a self filling money jar and four generations of pixie dust left in a box for her (gross identifier; pixie dust is dead skin shed from pixies. Eww). She is fast becoming a beloved member of her tiny town, but drama seems to find her as well as friendship. Will Elisa’s family accept her choice and allow her to stay and become the woman she is destined to be. Not a page turner but a nice, quiet read.

Magic powers, ghosts that play pranks and so much more

A great read. Wasn't too sure at first but thoroughly enjoyed it ad can't wait for the next one. A magical inheritance, a talking cat, a prank pulling ghost and a murder. Nice mix of humour, action and well paced with a story that engages from start to finish. Our heroine is as ordinary as she can be (or so she thinks) until she develops bright pink hair, a dandruff condition and magic. The rest of the characters are full, colourful and engaging whilst the kitten familiar is a show stealer.
The letter reached her as she got fired again. However now she was the proud owner of a house, a kitten and some new friends. That is until she woke up with pink hair! Now she has wailing ghosts, a talking familiar, a stolen legacy and a murder to solve. Will she cope? Will she find the killer?

I found this book discounted on Amazon; this is my honest review.
-Fun new mystery. A lot of weird friends and some villains. And a talking cat, of course.
-I forgot the name of the pixie; now, saying this, I'm not even sure if she was addresses by her name ... But anyhow, I like the character development, how she came to adjust to her role, her new cat, and all the eccentricities of the fairies.
-I liked how the author didn't give you too much at at time. All the details of the pixie world and their family was given bit by bit.
-The end was totally unexpected in many ways and I loved that.
-The mysteries, because there are more than one, are all solved at the end but there's another story behind that could continue in another book.

Entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series

Entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and a fun storyline. A young woman gets a letter from a lawyer that she is the executor of her great aunts will. She drives to the small town and soon finds out that not only is she the executor she is the sole beneficiary. She inherits her great aunts house and everything else. What she does not know until a little bit later is that she is also going to inherit her great aunt’s magic and everything that goes with it. Follow along as she discovers who and what she is and meet the people that are going to be in her life from now on. A fun and entertaining cozy mystery that was entertaining from beginning to end. Fun read

The story is set in New Zealand, which I think is pretty awesome. The author doesn't tell you the setting though. I had to figure it out using clues n looking them up. It isn't until near the end that she mentions a big enough town that I knew I was right about the location. I think the setting is awesome. Most books I read are set in U. S., England, Ireland, or Scotland. The story kept my attention and kept me guessing in regards to the mystery.
If you like quick, clean, supernatural stories try this one. I looking forward to book 2.
There were only a couple spelling/grammatical errors but they didn't interrupt the flow of the story.

Pixie Me Up (Newborn Pixie Cozy Mystery, #1)
by Willow Mason

A delightfully entertaining read. Has mystery, quirky humor and pink hair!

All inheritances are not created equal. What Elisa got was not expected….. A prank playing ghost and a reverse aging cat just to start.

This was a fast read not an intense long burn mystery. This is a read in a day get over the book hump kinda book. It's an enjoyable read with easy to fall in love characters. Not too deep thinking just fun so if you're looking for the JD Robbs of paranormal you will not find it here. What you will find is a great way to chuckle through a rainy day.

Pixie Me Up was a wonderful Cozy Mystery. The Audiobook was enchanting and really funny. Elisa goes to Oakleaf Glade to collect her inheritance. After collecting her inheritance at the attorney office, and signing the papers with the two ladies dancing to seal the deal. Elisa settles into the new home and begins to explore. After a night in the house, she wakes up with pink hair. The ladies from the office come over and realize that a priceless box of pixie dust or pixie dandruff has disappeared! The mystery begins and the paranormal excitement begins. This book has fun characters and a surprising plot twist! It was such a fun quick read!!

Worth reading,a very cute story .

I was instantly pulled into this story and wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. There arent many pixie books so that made me try it and I adored the main character and her new kitten! The surrounding characters were well written and some full of spunk and attitude! (Twins of course!) I just hope the story continues so I can find out if elisa figures out how her magick works. I was only disappointed when the story ended and left ne wanting more.

While like other reviewers have mentioned, the 'strange stuff is happening i'm just going to go with it' is very odd, and hard to buy in many parts the story, the characters were fun and the mystery was clean cut.

There was no multi level mystery to unravel and the players were of like 5 characters so cute little introduction to what looks to be an eventful place to live.

The toss in at the end of a romance element to be explored in the next book was odd and random. Loved the familiar and the magical elements surrounding that aspect of the store. Unique and adorable.

Cute, but...

It's a cute idea and a cute book, but I expect certain things from my books, even if they are fantasy. The characters must react like a real human, if that is what they're portraying. The lead, Elisa, has interesting and shocking things happen to her, and her basic reaction? "Oh, okay. I wake up and my face and ears are a different shape and my hair's turning pink. Gotta leave for the store now.". It takes all of the fun that we should get and sucks it right out of the book! Really disappointed.

Not Gone with the Wind or anything like it! Not Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. But it was funny and intriguing and I really enjoyed this book! And there was no smut!!! It is a tale of a young woman who's Aunt died and left her something. Won't say what! No spoilers but when she goes to collect she finds out she gets a house and an inheritance . The inheritance is that she slowly is changing into a Pixie and is able to do magic and start physically changing-- First change is her hair! A fun read!

Who knew?

I don't normally read cozy mysteries. I enjoy a darker tone. However, I liked this one. I enjoyed the characters and the humor. While I figured out who the thief was earlier than I like, the story line was engaging. There are some editing issues, but those seemed to lessen in number as the story progresses; or, I was engrossed in the story to the point O overlooked them. While I received this book at no cost, I liked it enough to pay for the second book in the series.

Pixie Me Up

Elisa is at the end of her rope. Living in a shabby apartment, out of a job and nearly out of funds, Elisa is first shocked then overjoyed to receive a letter stating she has inherited her great aunt's estate. All it requires is a quick trip to Oakleaf Glade... Then all chaos breaks loose!

What a hoot and a half! Ups and downs, revelations and revenants, this book will give you a fit of the giggles! A feel good cozy mystery that you won't be able to put down!
