Bear Brook Podcast

Rate this book
Two barrels. Four bodies. And the decades-long mystery that led to a serial killer.
A podcast about a cold case that's changing how murders will be investigated forever.

The podcast is hosted by Jason Moon and was released through New Hampshire Public Radio. The genealogy technique was later used to solve the murders of the Golden State Killer.

Jason Moon began reporting on the Bear Brook murders back in 2015, when it was announced that new forensic techniques were being used to try to identify four bodies that were discovered in two barrels in the woods of Allenstown, New Hampshire.

In early 2017, authorities revealed a break in the case that made it clear this story was bigger - and had more significance - than previously thought. That's when Jason and New Hampshire Public Radio's editorial team began work on what would become the Bear Brook podcast.

Before coming to NHPR, Jason honed his reporting chops with a variety of public radio teams including StoryCorps, Transom.org, and WBHM in his home state of Alabama.

I taught season 1 of this podcast as my class text for senior English. Focused on narrative and rhetorical strategies. Focused on analytical argument skills as students evaluated and synthesized content. By the last episode my classes were waiting for closure with breaths held and many cried when we finished. I'm planning to teach students how to create their own podcasts now.

A fantastic story told really well. This is a mystery within a mystery. The case is solved over many years as new ways of finding things out come to light. The use of DNA and the association with the way that Ancestry.com help people find their family tree crash together to help solve this really interesting mystery.

This is basically like listening to an audiobook. I highly recommend it. It’s available for free.
