Get Over Yourself!: How to Get Real, Get Serious, and Get Ready to Find True Love

Rate this book
True love doesn’t just happen, notes professional matchmaker Patti Novak. You have to work for it–and want it. Forget eight-minute speed dates or online dating sites with twenty-page questionnaires that promise a scientifically calculated perfect match. The fact that you both like golf, stamp collecting, and pizza with anchovies is great, but it won’t mean a thing if you don’t feel that zing.

But before there can be sparks, there have to be dates. And before the first date, you need to get over yourself! Taking a tough-love approach, and in her signature straight-shooting style, Patti will show you how to fix what needs to be fixed, reach your core, and identify who you are and what you want in a partner. She uses a three-part common-sense

• Getting Over What? Assess your dating weaknesses, recognize what’s not working, and adjust your expectations. Delve into your personal history and past relationships, and pinpoint the issues that have been holding you back.
• Almost Over It Fine-tune your attitude, your look, and your behavior to maximize your dating chances. Novak lays out strategies to help you deal with the brutal dating monsters you find along the way.
• Over It Learn the do’s and don’ts of the first date, the second date, and beyond. Remember, it’s not a job interview or therapy session. Pretend you’re meeting a new friend, not a prospective husband or wife.

Finding your one and only isn’t about having the right shoes or a flat stomach. It’s about being true to yourself, being vulnerable, and being ready for love. Whether you’re new to the dating scene, divorced and looking, or just trying to reach that second date, Get Over Yourself! will help you get the love you’ve always wanted and deserve.

I thought a lot of her advice was pretty bogus. It seemed like her advice to women is to dumb yourself down so you don't scare off guys.

Great book! Good for singles and for those srtuggling with selfesteem. She coaches you as if she were a dear friend.
I was ready to deal with my situation after some time being single so the book was godsend for me. Those who dont like the book are unfortunately still in denial.
Thank you so much Patti!

I fully immersed myself in this book and all Patti had to say. As much as it was painful at times, it was necessary. I love the way she keeps it real. I highly recommend it to anyone who is prepared to dig deep and put forth the effort it takes to implement big changes.

Pretty interesting approach, but would maybe serve better as like a workshop. The repetition of "Get Over Yourself" got a little predictable towards the end, but otherwise an easy read for my daily commute.

Very approachable, down-to-earth advice coupled with a no nonsense attitude. Need to buy the bottom-line-- people get in their own way when it comes to dating and therefore get over what the self-created obstacles are.

- Know yourself and know how you come across to people.
- Be kind--to yourself and to others. With kindness, understanding, compassion and compromise, you won't be as judgmental, critical and may have more opportunities to get to know people.
- Practice empathic listening-- hear what people are saying in order to understand them.

There's also a quicklist of dating "types" and knowing what's a tangible fix vs. needing further help to deal with more entrenched issues.

Good insight and advice. I like her advice to "get over your ugly, get over yourself".
