The Curse of Beauty

Rate this book
Before the myths were carved in stone…
Before Medusa became a monster…
There was a priestess, a city, and a choice that changed everything.

1650 BC. Tiryns is fracturing.

The gods are silent. The sea brings strangers cloaked in bronze. And Thais, daughter of the chieftain and priestess of Lady Atana, stands at the crossroads of war and sacrifice.

To protect her people, she must become the voice the goddess still whispers to and the one who remembers what others will forget—even if it means falling for the one she must never love.

But love has a cost. And the choices Thais makes will echo through generations—until her song becomes myth.

The Curse of Beauty is an ode to:
- the women who wielded no sword but stood unshaken,
- the ones whose strength was forged in love,
- and the price they paid to leave a name history remembers.

In this magnificent work of historical fiction, the author has brought to life a little known time period and woven a fascinating story around it. Her characters are so realistic, you will feel you truly know them like old friends by the time you reach the end. It took me a while to finish this book, mostly because I wanted to savor every single beautifully written word. I look forward to diving back into this captivating world in the next book in the series.

Some mighty fine historical fiction! I'm excited to see where this new series takes us (the readers) and how she transports me to a long-ago time. I love this author's writing style and creativity. Her prose stops me in my tracks and I find myself rereading sentences to absorb all that they contain. From the book: "When you accept what happens to you is not about you, life eventually becomes about you." "For as long as there is breath, hope is eternal." And much, much more. You'll have to read this book to enjoy all that is Lauren Lee Merewether's awesome prose.

A powerful historical fiction tale relevant to these days

Never be afraid of curses because they can overcome by beauty and love. A strong woman main character in a challenging times and struggle, making this ancient Greek mythology with messages relevant to modern days, survival, freedom, mother-daughter sentiments. responsibility over egoism, love and fate, questioning people’s behaviour, and redemption.

The following memorable text explains my intention more that 1000 words: ‘…his strong chest beneath her forehead and her life pounding away moment by moment in a rapid reel of thought remained. At the end of it, darkness lingered. She gathered her hands beneath her chin and felt her breath fill her chest. “This curse of beauty,” she repeated in a whisper, and as clear as the spring river water and as pure as a newborn babe, her sudden epiphany from her lessons in the temples sweetly rang in her ears: It is not about me. No. It was never. about. me.’ Overall the building tense relationship between Thais and Alexein is a creative work of a well talented and sensible author.

The books contributes to my knowledge about the Greek mythology thanks to the dynamic plot that keeps me engaged. The dialogues and scenes’ description are real and flowing like watching an attractive TV series.

What makes this well-researched story earns 5 stars is that in addition to round characters, the writing elegantly takes you into the atmosphere of that era, their life style and daily challenges.

This book is a delight for anyone who enjoys ancient history and myth. Unlike the author's previous books, set in Egypt of the pharaohs, The Curse of Beauty puts the reader in ancient Greece.

Blending historical fact, or at least supposition, with creative expression, the plot delivers a fascinating portrayal of how the Medusa myth might have started.

The exciting story follows a despotic king, Oceanus, as he attempts to subjugate a hilltop town called Tiryns and unite the surrounding regions under his harsh rule. Once again, the author shines with her research of ancient history, as shown by the notes at the front and back of the book. And I thought the way in which she resolved the inception of the Medusa myth was very clever. Nicely done!

Mereweather has produced a heart-wrenching tale lost in the ages. The Curse of Beauty is based on the story behind Medusa—not the fantastical legend but a story closely aligned to its historical roots. Yet it is so much more than an historical account; it’s a story about hope, kindness, betrayal, love, duty, and war. It’s about searching within yourself to become the person you aspire to be, not who you think you should be. The author carries you on a journey through the main characters’ lives, from their beginnings to their end; a full cycle of growth. It’s a complex tale that will remain with you for a very long time. 5 stars!

Great historical fiction set in ancient Greece. It was a refreshing change from the Regency and Victorian eras that seem more common subjects of historical fiction.

Ancient Tyrens is attacked by Mycenaeans, and Thais believes she can help save her people by marrying the king of the new empire.

A historical retelling of the Medusa myth, as if it had a historical basis (even though it doesn't). Lauren Lee Merewether does an amazing job recreating the ancient world and mythology, made harder by choosing an era before the classical Greek era we're all familiar with. It is set when the people spoke Linear B, before they spoke Greek, and the mythology we know hadn't been formed yet. I loved this story, and can't wait to read more from the author!

Mesmerising story of love, lust and concuring lands

I am new to books on Greem Mythology.

So initial part, I will say about 1/10th of the book was a bit boring and slow. But later I was glued to it, moving between King Oceanus, his son Inachus, then to Tiryns, its resistance leader Gorgon and various other characters, the people exiled to the island and the curse of Medusa. The love, the lust and the revenge, all there unfolding at every chapter.

At the end I found the book quite well written, all kind of explanations at the beginning and at the end by you. I saw the statue of Medusa in many museums in Europe, but now I understood the story behind.

Lauren Lee Merewether’s “The Curse of Beauty: The Story Behind the Myth (Ancient Legends)”

Rich in myth an Ancient Greek history, Ms. Merewether brings the myth of Medusa alive beautifully with all the family drama, political conflict and energized emotions, giving new life to an old tale. With an exciting storyline she has created a dynamic story with an engrossing plot that will captivate you in a way that will make it almost impossible to put the book down.

Her writing is elegantly superb, and she has a gift, for conveying the heart of the story with empathy, excitement and passion. Her characters are portrayed beautifully in all their flaws and their glory. This is a breathtaking tale that come to life on the pages. This is the stuff movies are made of.

I always look forward to this author’s books. I loved this one and her series on Ancient Egypt and I can’t wait for the next book. She continually outdoes herself!

Thank you so much Ms. Merewether for this fascinating story! I loved it!

Enjoyed this tale so much! Since most myths have roots in something that really happened, this exciting story takes you very well back to the beginnings of human society in small villages of Greece and Mycenae, into a could-have-been story of the Medusa myth. Very researched and realistic, so much you feel you were there! Not a story you'll forget later! Loved it! I can hardly wait for the rest of the series. This author soars!

This was one of those books that I kept reading, hoping it would get better. The author had a fantastic idea. I'm sure many people, myself included, have wondered about the real world origins of classic myths and for a long time I have believed that those tales would be great adventures and I still believe that. This books is not bad and reading the material at the end of the books shows (I think) that the author knows her stuff. She even puts forward some good themes ("it's not about you"). But the plot moves from A to B to C and at such a slow pace that by the end I didn't care what happened to the Tirynians(?). All the characters were pretty shallow and any sort of internal conflict seemed tacked on for the sake of the story rather than growing from some organic strength or weakness. My biggest disappointment was the lack of a sense of place and time. This was one of the reasons I read this book, looking for insight into a period that I was curious about, but knew nothing of. Was Tiryns a village or an actual town? There was talk of trade, but it was never shown. I thought the author had a good idea in describing the impact that building a defensive wall had on life in the town, but it didn't have much impact on the story. The biggest problem I had was, I imagined Tiryns to be a small Bronze Age town (with strategic location), but pretty primitive and yet, nobody seems to work. Herding is talked about, hunting is talked about. Do they farm? Do they gather wild food? For a town hungry because of the wall building not much effort seems to be put into relieving that hunger. Hence Oceanus' offer of food seems a contrived obstacle as does the town's use of that excuse to submit to him. The women are worse. In THE classic Bronze Age story, Penelope weaves, no one here does; no sewing, food seems to appear for banquets, even though we all know that cooking took longer then. Plot, character, scene; a little improvement in any one of these areas would have gotten another star. Something equal to the concept would have gotten at least two. It did get better at the end in what was essentially the epilog, describing how the Medusa story came to be and also how it was passed down to us. I don't know the status of Ancient Legends #2, but at the very reasonable price of this story, I would give it a chance, still hoping it gets better.

There are many tales within this story. It is quite long and complicated. There are tales 0f hubris and cruelty. Domineering and selfishness. A little bit of love. Some tenderness and good friendship. All focusing on an evil king and his son who is almost as evil. People who question their authority are immediately killed or made to suffer. Many times while reading the story I wished someone would strike down this king, but it never happened.

In the end the story is about survival of some good people, who build a new life far from the evil kings. For me it was too little too late to offset all the sadness in the preceding chapters. I guess I should have been forewarned by the title of the book, which contained the word curse, but I thought it would be historical fiction and couldn't be that bad.

Some things never change. A child tries to please a parent who will never be pleased. A father is blinded by his loss and resents his child for it. If you like a family saga where challenges upon challenges occur, this book is for you. I learned so much about this time in history, thanks to the authors incredible research. I was grateful for the kind people because there were many who were not. What makes a leader so charismatic that even when they are despicable they are followed? Throughout history we've encountered this. Fear is a powerful motivation for carrying out atrocities. I was amazed at the strength Thais always managed to find and I wanted her to find peace.

How might the legend of Medusa have begun?Lauren Lee Merewether has offered an answer to this question in this novel by taking the reader back to early Greece. It took me some time to get into this story because I was unfamiliar with many of the terms, especially the military ones, but once the story gets rolling, it sucked me in. This is a true historical novel, with no magic or supernatural influences thrown in, and I appreciated the purity that makes the story so plausible.

good but the center stage is not where it should be

I think it was a good story too long to tell and yet the intended interpretation of the Medusa myth by the author was not at center stage as is to be expected.
I appreciate the authors knowledge of history but wish she had had more of a coherent line.

In a world of retellings, The Curse of Beauty offers a true origin story to the Medusa myth. Although a little more lengthy than was absolutely necessary, I adored this novel. The characters were multi-faceted and real, with tangible development and growth. I wish the author had narrowed down some of the POV characters as it hopped around perspective quite a bit, which lessened how much I was able to connect with a character at any given time. Overall, this novel didn't have the polish of a traditionally published novel might have had. I think an editor could have made this story tighter and more neat, but the actual content was wonderful and I loved it.
