-------------------------

Before his third year of Hogwarts has even begun, Harry faces three whole weeks of unsupervised time in Diagon Alley. In that time he takes a trip to Gringotts - and that changes everything.

Burdened with the knowledge that Dumbledore has been blocking his family magic, and manipulating far more than he ever thought possible, Harry doesn't know who he can trust; but he knows he can't keep going that way. There's a whole world of lore and politics and history to catch up on, and the more he learns, the more Harry realises his true place in the world, and how much is being kept hidden from him. All the while, Dumbledore's twinkling eyes are constantly watching, and Harry can't let on how much he knows.

With help from unexpected places, Harry starts on a journey to end the war, and reshape the wizarding world. With how much he looks like James Potter, people have forgotten one important thing about him - he is Lily Evans' son, and she was one hell of a witch.

This is a mammoth of a fic and I couldn't take a break to read anything else until I was finished with it. Really interesting plot that spans over 4 years. It does great things with some tropes that are often done badly, such as family magics. There were some brilliant plot twists, and some very satisfying scenes of revelations. I liked how much inter-House interactions happened, and it led to some unexpected pairings. This fic had semi-sentient Hogwarts! I adore that idea and it's not utilised enough I swear. Here it was mixed with family magic of the Founders with great result.

However I had some trouble believing in main pairings. Even in Drarry (which I ship!), not to mention other two (no qualms about Neville/Ginny tho). At about half when all relationships became quite established I finally accepted then, but still romance was one of the weakest parts of the fic for me. Also Hermione was blatantly vilified. It was tagged as "Not Hermione friendly", but honestly she was stupid to the point of complete OOC. Speaking of tags - it wasn't tagged but this fic has Indian!Harry.

No re-read for me in the future, but was definitely worth my time.

Yes, I am acknowledging that the fan fiction I read is so good that it deserves a spot on my goodreads. It is actually often better than some books. This one in particular. It’s certainly long enough to count (109 chapters of pure joy)!

What a masterpiece. This story had everything I could have ever wanted in a fan fiction and had a masterful new storyline and such a deep understanding of the magical world. The magic lore and inheritance system was incredible and has changed the way I think about the Harry Potter universe. It made my heart literally hurt with how much love I had for these characters. The storylines and pairings were so authentic and beautiful that I wish it was canon (it’s canon in my mind).

Ahh I just loved it! Animagus Harry?! Heir of Slytherin? Sentient Hogwarts??? It’s like this fic was written just for me

This one was massive and so well written that it was basically pure magic. The author fixed SO many of the things that bothered me in canon. They finally addressed Harry's abuse, and he finally got to confront each adult that let it happen. Draco and Harry's relationship was more fleshed out in this one. Everything was just incredibly well done. I am buzzing just thinking about how masterful this fic was. The writer starts from third year all the way to sixth year, giving Harry an ACTUAL life and people around him. I think that was my favourite part, watching Harry become a person. The character development is so perfect. He's a completely different person by the time he faces voldermort. This felt like an episode of 'what if...?'

I swear reading this made me realize how awful Harry had it in canon. Small things that we glossed over just because the plot kept focusing on the battle to come. Like the love potion. In this fic, Harry is appropriately shaken and everyone around him rallies to support him against this awful thing that almost happened to him. God I had SO many light bulb moments reading this. Even watching Harry integrate more people in his life instead of just sticking to the two. Dumbledore was really scary in this one. I feel like it was eye-opening. Some of the stuff he did in canon actually get talked about here and we get to talk about how bad it actually is. Also, I definitely think that Lily and James would have made it very clear that Petunia was the worst guardian. And they kept sending him back there. This was magic. Its like they took apart the original story and cleaned up the mess, which made it a thousand times better.

Honestly, it was almost like a religious experience reading this. This might be hands down my favourite HP fanfic. The detail, the emotion, even adding other characters made it so good. Although hermione made me really angry. I can definitely see Ron acting that way, he is like that even in canon. And I get that Hermione always took his side but would she really stick by dumbledore even when everything happened. Like the kidnapping and Dumbledore running away. Or the part where she sees how happy Harry is and how much he's grown. That part clashed with this ideal Hermione I have always had in my head.

Now, the relationships. So many. Severus and Remus are my favourite hands down. That's a part of the marauders I can't wait to get into more. But watching Harry get his own room and a safe place for the first time made me tear up. Then slowly trusting and reaching out to new people now that he has a foundation to build on. Watching him basically root out the corruption, learn what he can do, and then actually make lasting changes was amazing. This fic was just insanely good. I don't know if I can reread it all again but it was fucking awesome and I stumbled upon it by complete accident. Aki my life😅

First of all I would like to say that this fic has been living in my head rent free ever since I finished reading it. It was THAT good!

Imagine a fic where most if not all of the story's original plot-holes are fixed, where Harry gets all the love he deserves and Draco never ends up on the wrong side of the war and they slowly end up falling in love with each other.

I truly loved the political aspect of the story.
Also the trope Harry is the heir to multiple noble houses never gets old

Normally I don't review Fanfics but this fic simply deserves a place in my shelves and I want to always remember it.

The people I love know how I feel about fanfictions. For me, this kind of fan activity is so much more than just a way to have fun or something to do out of boredom. When stories are written like this one… guys. This is a work of art.

I’m so happy I read it! It made me smile in so many ways, drove me a little crazy, kept me awake at night, and got me talking (a lot!) about Dumbledore and those infuriating redheads.
I cried through the last three chapters—like, really cried.

The writing? Impeccable. There’s a rhythm to it, a kind of emotional precision that hits exactly where it hurts, and where it heals. And the way the author reshapes canon—not by breaking it, but by slipping through its cracks and finding new truths—it’s just masterful.

Some said it starts slow—maybe. But that’s how you steep a potion: not everything good comes in flashes. Sometimes, it brews deep. And this one? This one stayed with me.

Thank you for this story. I loved every bit of it, and I swear I’ll never shut up about it.

Special mention to my favourite Severus Snape ever. Ever.

Long fic, lot of smut.

I'm not a fan of this ship (at all), but when I heard that it goes further into the inner workings of Wizard life and how absolutely horrible the adults handled Harry and his safety I knew I had to lock in. Yes, it's sometimes rings true to the fact that it is indeed a fanfiction, but as a quotev/wattpad warrior from early age of ten years old I am confident I can come out of the battle with my wits attached. The romance often feels flat and unbelievable, but I still have a good time reading the book overall.

This piece was an absolute work of art, possibly my favourite I’ve read in a long, long time, to the point 750k words don’t seem enough and leave me wanting to read more of these beautifully crafted characters. Thank you for writing this and letting us readers be a part of such an incredible story.

one of the best pieces of fanfiction I've ever read.

this tackled almost all the things that truly bothered with the canon. it was like an improved version in my opinion and such a joy to read.
if you always kinda hated Albus and thought he was a prick, plus wished harry had an actual support system, read this!!
also, the queer representation is amazing

The ships of like Severus and Remus were shocking and same with Charlie and Sirius, but you just made them feel right together, so congrats to you. I loved that Harry was smart in this fic, you don’t get that many fics like that so I really appreciated it. Awesome and totally worth the read

I’m such a fan of the politics in this book and all the friendships that they have here 🥺🥺

Also I LOVE when they write Dumbledore as the VILLAIN he is.

What an amazing concept and execution. In a twist on harry potter where harry goes to gringotts for money before his 3rd year, only to be told upon being scanned for identification that he has a block on his family magic, as well as compulsions that make him reckless and devoted to dumbledore. Then ensues a mission for harry to reinvent himself in the wake of the betrayal, as well as the journey to figuring out how he actually fits into the wizarding world. basically, harry is smart, actually uses his magical power, and finally sinks into the magical world instead of only using it when it serves the defeat of voldemort. it was such an interesting plot that continued to keep me on my feet, and I pretty much read it constantly for 2 weeks straight. I had a few small gripes, such as the pet names that felt out of place for me, and some of the relationship pairings, but on the whole, I really enjoyed this retelling and finally getting a plot where harry is intelligent and proactive. I also thought the author brought up some great points about how he is basically only friends with ron and hermoine in the originals. I liked this rendition better honestly, where harry makes friends with everyone in the school through their “study group.”A solid 4.5!

You really had me slogging through 700k words of Harry Potter meticulously preparing to kill Voldemort and confront Dumbledore, only for I had To Ashes and Blood by Woodkid on full blast (an Arcane song, mind you) waiting for the epic battle of hogwarts; that was… hilarious not gonna lie. Very comical. Laughed at myself lots.

The author did mention that they couldnt really write the battle scenes much so I understand, however, props to them for writing so good nonetheless. This Harry was *Chef’s Kiss*

Not a bad fic but not the best either. It was entertaining and I did like some of the plot twists.
I read it for Drarry so some of the other ships weren’t to my liking but overall it was okay.
Also lots of smut.

Super long and amazing! The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that like 90% of the good characters are male. Most women, especially in the first half, are "bad" or small side characters. However, it does get better as it goes on.

100 out of 5 stars.

What a masterpiece. Truly. Lily’s Boy is one of the best pieces of fanfiction I have ever read, and honestly, calling it fanfiction almost feels too small for what this story is. This was a full, massive, beautifully crafted reimagining of the Harry Potter universe that took canon apart, examined every crack in it, cleaned up so many of the messes that always bothered me, and somehow made the whole world feel deeper, richer, kinder, sharper, and so much more magical.

This story had everything I could have ever wanted. Animagus Harry? Heir of Slytherin? Sentient Hogwarts? A magical inheritance system that completely changed the way I think about the HP universe? It was like this fic was written specifically for me. The magical lore was incredible. The politics, the rituals, the family magic, the way Hogwarts itself was explored, the way old magic and bloodlines and inheritance were woven into the story… it was all so fascinating and so well done that I genuinely wish it were canon. Actually, no. In my mind, it is canon now.

One of the things I loved most was how this fic gave Harry an actual life. It starts in third year and carries us all the way through sixth year, but instead of just dragging him from danger to danger, it lets him grow. It lets him be loved. It lets him have a home, a support system, a room of his own, people who notice when he is hurting, and adults who actually care enough to do something about it. Watching Harry slowly become a person outside of survival mode absolutely wrecked me. By the time he faces Voldemort, he is not the same boy he was at the beginning, and that development felt so earned. So thoughtful. So emotionally satisfying.

And the way this story handles Harry’s abuse? God. This fic made me realize all over again how awful Harry truly had it in canon. So many things we kind of gloss over because the plot keeps moving are finally treated with the weight they deserve here. Harry gets to confront the adults who failed him. People are actually horrified by what happened to him. The Dursleys are not brushed aside as just a miserable childhood detail. The consequences matter. Lily and James would have never wanted him with Petunia, and this fic makes that painfully clear. It was so healing to see Harry finally surrounded by people who understood that he deserved better.

Dumbledore was genuinely terrifying in this one, and honestly? Eye-opening. So many of the things he did in canon are actually discussed here, and the story does not let him hide behind the “greater good” excuse. The manipulation, the secrecy, the way Harry was raised like a sacrifice, the way people kept sending him back to a house where he was being abused… all of it gets pulled into the light. And I loved that. I am always here for some Albus criticism, and this fic delivered. If you have ever thought Dumbledore was a prick and wished Harry had an actual support system, read this.

I also loved how the story addressed things canon barely let breathe. The love potion plot, for example, was such a light bulb moment for me. In canon, things like that can pass by so quickly, but here Harry is appropriately shaken and everyone around him rallies to protect him. It made me think about how many awful things happened around Harry that were treated as just another plot point instead of something traumatic. This fic gives those moments space. It gives Harry care. It gives him people.

The relationships were absolutely beautiful. Draco and Harry were so fleshed out here, and I loved watching their relationship grow into something authentic, tender, complicated, and deeply earned. It did not feel rushed or shallow. It felt like two people slowly learning each other, challenging each other, and choosing each other. But honestly, there were so many incredible relationships in this fic. The friendships, the found family, the mentorships, the romantic pairings, the queer representation… all of it felt meaningful. It made my heart literally hurt with how much love I had for these characters.

And Severus and Remus? Hands down, one of my favorite parts. Their dynamic made me want to dive deeper into that whole corner of the Marauders era. I loved how complex, emotional, and layered they were. I loved seeing different characters pulled into Harry’s life and watching him slowly trust them. Watching him build a foundation and then use that foundation to grow, to learn, to fight back, to root out corruption, and to make lasting changes was incredible.

I will say Hermione made me really angry at times. Ron’s behavior was easier for me to accept because, honestly, I can see him acting that way, and there are pieces of that already in canon. But Hermione sticking by Dumbledore through everything was harder for me. Especially after the kidnapping, after Dumbledore running away, after seeing how happy Harry was and how much he had grown. That clashed with the ideal Hermione I have always had in my head. But even when I was frustrated, I was invested. I cared enough to be angry, which says a lot.

Reading this was almost like a religious experience. I know that sounds dramatic, but I mean it. This fic made me smile, made me cry, kept me awake at night, and got me talking nonstop about Dumbledore, Ron, and every single thing canon should have done differently. I cried through the last three chapters. Like, really cried. The emotional payoff was unreal.

The writing itself is impeccable. There is such a rhythm to it, such emotional precision. It knows exactly where to hurt and exactly where to heal. The author reshapes canon not by simply breaking it, but by slipping through its cracks and finding new truths. That is what made it feel so masterful. It did not feel like change for the sake of change. It felt like the story was asking, “What if Harry had been loved properly? What if the world had been forced to do better by him?” And then it answered that question beautifully.

Some people say it starts slow, and maybe it does, but honestly? That is how you steep a potion. Not everything good comes in flashes. Sometimes it brews deep. And this one stayed with me. At 750k words, it is massive, and somehow it still was not enough. I finished it wanting more of these characters, more of this world, more of this version of Harry who gets to be powerful, loved, protected, angry, soft, brave, and whole.

The people who know me know how I feel about fanfiction. For me, this kind of fan activity is so much more than just a fun hobby or something people do out of boredom. When stories are written like this, they are art. Lily’s Boy is art. It is healing, magical, emotional, infuriating, romantic, clever, and deeply satisfying. It tackled almost everything that truly bothered me about canon and turned the story into something that felt richer and more honest.

I am so happy I read it. I am so grateful it exists. This is possibly my favorite HP fanfic I have read in a long, long time, and it absolutely deserves every single one of those 100 stars.

If you wished Harry had an actual support system, if you love canon rewrites that fix the things that hurt, if you enjoy magical lore, found family, queer representation, Dumbledore criticism, Ron hate, Slytherin Harry vibes, and a story that feels like pure magic from beginning to end… read this.

100/5 stars. Canon in my heart forever.
