Needs to go back to the drawing board

The story, or rather, the premise of the story was a solid one that had so much potential. However, the execution killed any chance of that happening.

‘Her Forbidden Samurai’ fell flat on so many levels. Most notorious of the lot is how riddled it was with grammatical errors!! Proofread, editors, beta readers! These are all options that should be explored when writing a book for public consumption.

I’m not going to write a negative review, but rather a constructive critique because I know it takes a lot to sit and write a story with however many pages. The author, Shanna Lynn, did just that, but her execution needed work.

The story felt rushed and I’ll mapped out. Throughout the story it felt as though she was throwing all the cliched lines she had read from other romance books and us. She tried to make the FL a Mary Sue, but because she wasn’t fleshed out well, it came off disastrous and disingenuous. Established plot points were forgotten. One of those being that FL is from a different time and speaks English. A language that only the high class speaks and is able to understand. As demonstrated upon her initial capture. Yet, that fact is forgotten and throughout the story, all the common place warriors and the antagonist is able to communicate in English to her with zero issues.

Her aim to take hold of the sword was abandoned, not because she fell in love and couldn’t stand returning without it, but because the author, I believe genuinely forgot that she made this a driving force in the story. Only making mention of it in the epilogue. Which genuinely felt like an “Oh, right. The sword plot point, let me address it with a throwaway sentence so nobody thinks I forgot about it.”

ML was no better, development wise. If you’re going to write about Al the past, especially in an era that actually exists, conduct proper research and do not wing it. So many things needed fact checking. So many things irritated me and so many things were read as the idolisation (to an extent) of another culture. (‘The samurai are such a noble group.’ ‘They live by a code of honour’ ‘Samurais are so perfect’) *deep inhale* I won’t get into whether or not this book was written by someone who idolised Japanese culture - in an unhealthy way- but a lot of it READS that way.

If I were to list the numerous things that failed this book, this review would become an epistle and I don’t wish to write that. Instead, I’ll add the other glaring thing that prevented the story from being good. The sentence/occurrence syntax. Every occurrence was ‘this happened AND, rather than; IF this happens THEN’ There was no steady flow of progression. Just scenarios happening because the writer wanted them to happen.

One more thing. It’s IMPOSSIBLE for a woman NOT trained in the art of war, something that these warriors are trained and experienced in, to come in and is suddenly the best! No! Have you held a sword? It is HEAVY, especially in the era this time is based in. There is ZERO CHANCES of her leading these seasoned warriors into battling and besting the enemy with her skill after training for a few weeks.

Good Book!

This was a really good book. I couldn't give it five stars because of the spelling and grammar errors. However, even with the errors it did not take away from the story. The time period the story was in was very intense, especially for woman. If given the chance to go back in time would you take it? Better yet, would you decide to stay know-how to get home? No spoilers here however, there's always that one person... or two that just can't be nice.
I'm looking forward to reading more from this author...one suggestion is that you obtain beta readers, they will help you in any corrections that maybe needed before the book is released.
